3. What is a CT scan of the kidney?
Computed tomography(CT)
specifically to visualize the
kidney or may also called a CT
Stonogram.
It is noninvasive procedure that
also uses a combination of X-
rays and computer technology
to produce horizontal or axial,
images or called slices of the
body.
5. Is this procedure easy and affordable?
Compare to ultrasonography this procedure cost more
money. This procedure is easy its just procedure itself may
take a while and patient will stay still for certain time.
6. What are reasons why we might need a
CT scan of the kidney?
To assess;
Kidney tumors or other lesions
Obstructions
Abscesses
Polycystic renal disease,
Renal stones and infections, renal cancer or
even congenital anomalies.
7. What are risk of a CT scan?
Pregnant or suspected maybe pregnant.
Having allergic to or sensitive to medicine.
Patients with kidney problems or diabetic
clients.
8. The Common diagnosis in CT scan of the
kidney
Normal
Renal stone disease
Renal infection
Simple and complex renal cyst
Renal cancer
9. How should patients prepare for CT
scan?
Precautions
Clothing
Contrast media
Eat/drink
Diabetics
Medications
10. What can the patients expect?
An iodine containing contrast material will be
given orally or intravenously (IV).
The contrast material is safe.
Your technologist, radiologist or nurse will make
sure that the patients undergo will make sure do
not have allergies to the contrast material.
Refer any questions to the radiologist.
11. What happens during the procedure?
Patients must remove there jewelries.
Patients that will need to be injected with contrast
substance will be started in the hand or arm if its
Intravenously if not then orally or some situations
maybe given rectally.
12. The patient can now lie down in to the scan table that
slides into a large circular opening of the scanning
machine.
Pillow and straps maybe necessary.
The technologist will be in the other room where the
scanner control located.
There's a speaker inside the room which the
technologist communicate and hear you.
Once its starts the procedure the X-rays absorbs the
body tissues will be detected by the scanner and
transmitted to the computer.
13. What happens after examination?
The health care provider will monitor the
patients for period of time for any side effects.
14. Advantages of CT Stonogram:
It is noninvasive procedure.
It uses combination of x-rays and computer technology
to make images or slices of the body.
A CT scan can make detailed pictures of any part of the
body. This includes the bones, muscles, fat, organs, and
blood vessels. They are more detailed than regular X-
rays.
15. Disadvantages:
• It is more expensive than a regular ultrasound.
• It may take certain time to stay still in the scanner.
• Unnecessary exposure or radiation.
