1. The OAMI building in Alicante on the Spanish Costa Blanca is the European Union´s official
trade marks and designs centre .It stands at the entrance to Alicante city from the southern
Costa Blanca .It registers trademarks which provide design protection throughout the EU as well
as collaborating with all 27 countries on issues affecting intellectual property rights .
Now there is to be a 40 million euro new centre to house an expanding need.The new building
will be larger , more efficient and ecological .It is due to be up and running next year with the
construction work giving employment to 450 workers .
Last week there was a ceremonial laying of the first stone by the regional president Alberto
Fabra , the Mayor of Alicante Sonia Castedo and the president of OAMI . The new building will
be connected to the old building by walkways. It will have a congress centre to seat 450 people
and will become a centre for international congresses .It will be surrounded by gardens , giving
a campus -like feel to the area .
Last year the copyrights and counterfeiting teams moved to the OAMI building .They provide
Brussels with reports on how to crack down on pirating and design the databases to improve
information on this phenomenon .It appears that OAMI is in Alicante to stay .
