Calpe residents given voice in Old Town facelift plans
1. The people of Calpe are being given a voice .They are being asked for their ideas on how to
give the Old Town in Calpe , on the Spanish Costa Blanca , a facelift .A 50,000 euro contest
has been set up for professional architects and developers but they have to take into
consideration in their plans , the wishes of the people .
Calpe is an important holiday destination , an important tourist centre but nevertheless it is the
full time residents who are important and this is about the future of Calpe and consolidating its
future as a holiday destination. This focus on the Old Town has upset many expats who live on
the outlying urbanisations and who feel that they have been neglected in the money game.
It appears that there was 400,000 euros from the government to resurface roads and that just
hasn´t happened .
Tourism currently provides Calpe with 90% of its income and the historic town centre is seen as
being vital in attracting tourists to the town .They want the Old Town to be a lovely place to visit
.It is not a case of rebuilding it but of rejuvenating it .
Other projects do include the urbanisations and also planting almost 3000 trees around the
town . The mayor believes that the government money for the urbanisations should be through
within 6 weeks or so .
