1. Hispanidad Primary School in Santa Pola on the Spanish Costa Blanca , suffered a floor
collapse last Friday .Nine children and a teacher required treatment for bruising when the floor
of the ground level classroom collapsed .Four of the children were taken to Elche hospital
together with the teacher and they were discharged the same day .Others were treated at local
health centres .
The incident happened just after 9am when a metre deep hole opened up in the classroom
where a lesson had just begun . Some said that it sounded as though a bomb had gone off .The
children affected found themselves amongst the rubble .There had been no previous reports of
cracks .
The school was evacuated and parents were contacted to take their children home . Municipal
technicians were contacted and they ascertained that there were no structural defects .The
children are being educated elsewhere in the town until the repairs have been completed .
Now the regional government has agreed to an emergency evaluation plan to check all schools
in the area for possible defects .It will begin with schools that are 40 years old or older .
Schools in the Valencia region cost 54 million euros to run and 12 million to maintain .Parents
have requested that these inspections are very thorough .It appears that masonary has fallen in
a playground in Rojales and a ceiling has fallen at a school in Alicante .
