1. The Spanish population between January 2011 and 2012 rose slightly according to the National
Institute of Statistics .It grew by 74,828 and took the total up to 47,265,321 million people .
However for the first time in 15 years the immigrant population fell . Since 1998 immigration
numbers have increased year on year but last year the overall figure went down by just over
15,000 .The number of immigrants now stands at 5,736,285 million .This is the first recorded
drop since the National Institute of Statistics started to keep records .
The INE obtains its figures from town hall padron registers which details not only those who
have permission to live in Spain but also those who are waiting for that permission . The
fluctuation in figures is relatively small and in 2008 the percentage of the total population was
11.41% , 12.08% in 2009 , 12.22 % in 2010 , 12.19% in 2011 and 12.14% in 2012 .In 1996 ,
when records first began the figure was 1.6% of the population .
One positive note was that of the tourism industry and in 2012 there was a 3% increase in the
number of tourists visiting Spain .2012 was the third best year in the history for tourist
numbers. There were 57.9 million tourists last year . 2013 points to having even better figures
