Shunning In The Scarlet Letter
Many people can probably recount a time where they have shunned another or been shunned out of
fear, jealousy, prejudice, religious differences, or other ____. This comes as no surprise as shunning
has been a part of society for centuries, used commonly as a form of punishment on an individual or
group. Many find that the art of shunning as a –––––––– form of aggressive behavior that causes
more problems than solutions (). One of the most popular novels of our time that shows the harmful
affects of shunning is Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, which tells the story of a young
Puritan woman in the 1600s who was shunned by her community after she committed adultery.
Hester Prynne's story is uncommonly similar to that of Monica Lewinsky,

Shunning Research Paper
I Personally think that shunning still exists today due to the fact of people believing there higher
than others and can make them aside just as they please but to think there humans just like them.
Shunning is basically putting aside someone such as a kid in the group just doesn't fit in, too fat, too
ugly, too poor, too smart, too nerdy, too whatever or an other simple terms, some people just do not
get along with each other and the shunning begins. Most of shunning tends to begin in school for
which in the bad side can continue for a major part in their life. In the Case of Someone making a
mistake that too others is something horrible but a mistake that anyone out there can make thats
when shunning begins. It Begins as in criticizing that person and then talking about that person until
many other people begin to also. That person is feeling terrible lonely disgraced and just
disrespected but due to all this no one actually tends to care about that person they feel as if there an
alien from another planet and want no type ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It Starts of by being mean saying horrible things about the girl to a point where they can end up
starting a rumor which can ruin that one girls reputation to everyone else. They can also begin to
leave her out of things always setting her aside. To a Point where the girl has no one and feels as if
the world just came down on her. I Personally Can Relate to this type of shunning because i'm not as
pretty as other girls and don't have a pretty face or pretty body as they have. Shunning started for me
as in leaving me aside from things, saying mean things about me, being rude to me and other stuff
and in my view i felt horrible i felt very sad and for me it was just plain horrible because i am a very
sensitive girl and they take advantage of it because they know i can't say anything back and if i do it
gets worse for me but that is going to have to

The Role Of Shunning In The 17th Century
Shunned persistently avoid, ignore, or reject (someone or something) through antipathy or caution
and also can be the act of social rejection, or emotional distance. In a religious context, shunning is a
formal decision by a denomination or a congregation to cease interaction with an individual or a
group, and follows a particular set of rules
Reasons people were shunned in the 17th century A lack of (christian) religious faith back in this
time period everybody was very religious they followed by the bible for example the 10
commandments
''You shall have no other gods before Me.'' it means to love something more than God You should
worship God instead of Your clothes , shoes , computer or TV. You should read the Bible more, "You

The Dixie Chicks Analysis
This society is built with a default, and that default is to shun the disliked, the unknown, and the
minority. "So long as the most vulnerable people in our population are consigned to places that the
rest of us will always shun and flee and view with fear, I am afraid that educational denial, medical
and economic devastation, and aesthetic degradation will be inevitable" (Kozol). The question is, is
that the right way to turn? The Dixie Chicks are one of many examples of people in modern day
society who spoke out for what they believed in and who were punished by the default. While they
may not fall under the medical denial or economic devastation that Kozol is referring to, they fall
under the category of aesthetic degradation. The action ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many comparisons can be drawn between this unfortunate soul and the Dixie Chicks. The first is
that both parties were never forgiven, Hester is shunned even after she comes back to Boston years
and years later and "CNN's report in 2013, many of the Dixie Chicks former fans still bore a grudge:
A Country Music TV poll asked whether the Dixie Chicks should be forgiven, and over a third still
answered 'no'"(Parker). This shows that even when years have gone by society still holds on to anger
more than any other feeling or memory. As well as the fact that both were treated more harshly
because they were women. Boston did inquire after the father of younger Pearl, but no one much
cared since they had caught the woman, and of course according to the puritan interpretation of the
bible women are the route of sin. Maines was later quoted saying ,"It makes me a little irritated that
people come down way harder on the girls than the boys" (Leaderman). She is commenting on how
many male pop stars have spoken out against politicians and none have received the rebuke that they
Dixie Chicks did as a female band committing the same

How Is Technology Being Blurred

The Blur of Technology
It is no question that technology is changing people and the way we live. Almost every person
depends on technology in some way to get through the day. Weather its smartphones, washing
machines, toasters, or refrigerators, all of these common technologies were invented to increase our
productivity and make life easier. The underlining question in this essay is to highlight the concerns
of technology and prove that people are being blurred in their connections to digital reality and
physical reality, work life and family, and our dependency on technology. First, people in the 21st
century have been blurred in regards to the relationship between ... Show more content on

In that fact, it would be hard to disconnect completely from technology like the Amish settlement,
but there are still ways to limit out technology use. The blurring of boundaries can be seen both as a
positive and negative. In terms of being positive, smartphones are making people more productive at
work by making resources more accessible. For example, people can now work from home and
never have to leave, which is very helpful for some. Some negatives of blurring boundaries with
technology could best be seen in our awareness of being in a virtual online world versus the physical
reality. Individuals need to make sure they are still engaged with others and not distracted by the
blur of technology. Overall, technology is causing boundaries to blur in concerns to digital reality
and physical reality, work life and family, and our dependency on

The Amish Rejection
Throughout my life I have gone through more destitution than numerous people expect a teenager to
go through. I have gained confidence and an independent spirit from the hardships I have
experienced. The rejection I have experienced from my family is the obstacle bearing the greatest
impact on my life. After my family left the Amish, we faced rejection and were shunned by the rest
of the family. To this day, sixteen years later, this shunning is still occurring. I have not met or even
seen most of my extended family as a result of this punishment. While this hardship has caused
much suffering, it has also brought out strengths in myself I did not know I had.
One of these strengths is the sense of independence I have gained. Being content with

What Does Shunning Mean
A Bush Among Trees Having to deal with problems on your own is a good thing, but if it's about
people shunning you and treating you differently, it is a whole different story. Shunning means
people around you choose to disown you, not having any respect for you at all. Also, shunning
means people leave you out of everything such as activities, events, or even important meetings.
Lastly, shunning means people also do not want anything to do with you at all. Shunning is
important because it can cause a mature person to act as an immature person, which is not right to
treat a person like they are worth nothing. It's not about how bad you dislike the person, it's about
how mature you act about the situation of a person being an outcast. Also, ... Show more content on

I told her I didn't have any and she offered to be my friend. In conclusion, I learned that there are
nice people in this world even if other people are shunning you, they will stick up for you and care
for you no matter what. All you must do is allow yourself to find the right people to be around that
have positive energy. But on the other hand, it is ok to handle your problems and still have a great
positive mind set. To be become a better person it's better for me to admit to my problems and work
them out. Second, it's about building a relationship with yourself and other people around me to help
build that positive vibe. Third, it helps me grow as a person and it grows my emotions and feeling
on how to handle it like a mature person. Forth, it's about how people show love to me and respect
me as a person not just an empty shell. To be a mature person, I must learn how shunning can make
me a better person by building a relationship, grow in the mind and love. The reason I must know
these things is because it helps me to move on in life and, it's better to have these things on taking
the first steps on becoming a mature person. Even though it is difficult to be a strong person, I am

El Chapo Shunning Quotes
Shunning means to avoid someone or something from motives of dislike or caution. People shun
today for various reasons. He or she may do things that are considered not ethical, he may break the
law, or he may be rejected by society. It is putative to say that shunning is in some way a type of
bullying. In other words, it can affect them to a great extent. Everyone had been a victim or a
witness of shunning. The person receiving humiliation never feels good about the whole situation.
They seem as if the situation does not bother him on the outside, but deeply inside it has an affect on
them.
Considering this, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is a big time drug lord in Mexico. He was born April
4, 1957. As a child, his family was in penury. His father was an abuser and a drug dealer as well.

People do not look at them as a hero or a person that done something great. They are shunned by
their unlawful actions. They are looked at in a different light than others. Both of them are
considered criminals for going against the law. It seems as though that El Chapo's "sin" is worse
than Hester's. But back in Hester's time, her sin is just as great as something like El Chapo's. Hester
was looked upon as one of the worst because she was the first in her town to do such a thing as she
did. She went to jail for a period time, was publicly humiliated on the scaffold, and had to wear the
letter "A" upon her bosom. She was an example to the people. Her sin was commonly used in
sermons in the church. Hester became popular for the sin she committed. Similarly, El Chapo did
jail time. He is used as an example to others that they cannot hide forever. He gained much
popularity from this, but not in a good manner. Even though he is not physically branded, he still
wears the letter of shame, criminal and drug lord upon his

Public Shunning Research Paper
Jared Fogle Public shunning is the act of persistently rejecting and ostracizing someone for their
actions. It was a common occurrence during the Puritan times, and it affected the outcasts and the
loved ones of the outcasts. Public shunning is a way to punish those who have sinned and have
violated a community's values. It has not always been as lenient as it is now. In the Puritan times,
people were publicly humiliated in many ways. Some were branded, displayed on the scaffold, or
simply paraded in front ot the town. The worse case for public shunning were executions in front of
the whole town. In today's world, public shunning is not as harsh. It is now done by parading an
outcasts' face and sins everywhere in the world by the news and articles. One of the most recent
broadcasted Shunnings is Jared Fogle. November 19, 2015, Jared Fogle pleaded guilty in court for
statutory rape and child pornography. He was found guilty for receiving and distributing child
pornography, for paying children for sex, and for having sex with at least two minors. He engaged in

puritan society. Jared molested minors while he was married to someone else. Jared Fogle and
Hester both committed adultery in different ways, and they were both shunned for it. They both
received their punishments by becoming outcasts. Hester was considered an outcast because she was
named unholy and unfaithful by her community, and the puritans did not want her unfaithfulness to
spread. Fogle is an outcast because he went against the modern value of children and the laws
against such actions. To further his humiliation, he was fired and sentenced to jail. Fogle is

Walking At Night In The Pedestrian By Ray Bradbury
In The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury, Leonard Mead is ostracized for walking at night, to the extent
of being arrested. This is symbolic of the ignoring and shunning and even the legal troubles that
those who go against the main idea purported in society face. It is also symbolic of those that dare to
be active thinkers in a passive thinking world. The powers in charge in Leonard Mead's world
believe that him walking every night could upset their social stability. In the short story, this takes
the form of the police arresting him and taking him to a psychiatric centre. This ostracizes the
Pedestrian and makes him be seen as a social pariah. Leonard Mead also believes that his society
will ostracize him if they found out he was walking at night.

Metamorphosis By Franz Kafka Argument Essay
A collective amount of humans create our humanity. Peering into the core of the human race, the
realization of all being one in the same becomes prominent. Division amongst humanity comes in
physical appearance, money, and location based culture. With the recognition of those differences
comes a consistent result. Backs are turned, and individuals are shunned because of uncontrollable
factors. The "experience" of being an outcast is essentially universal. The primary example of this is
in the short story "The Metamorphosis", by Franz Kafka. Gregor Samsa, a hard–working son who
provided for his family was shunned because of his change in physical appearance. After his
transformation into a literal beetle, Gregor's family began to care less for ... Show more content on

A man by the name of Bronislaw Malinowski traveled to his own research site in the Trobriand
Islands. It was his goal to learn about other people, and he wanted to gain information about his
neighbor's customs. "He himself, as if to spite all colonial customs, pitched his tent in the middle of
a local village, and lived among the local people. What he experienced turned out to be no easy
experience. In his diary... he continually mentions problems, bad moods, despair, and depression"
(Kapuscinski, 238). Due to Malinowski's cultural differences, the locals did not accept him which
darkened his experience. Some may say that the experience of being an outsider is not universal.
There are three possible ways to react to the many differences of the so–called "other". Shunning is
not the ordinary reaction. "Should they throw themselves in fury on those other people? Or walk
past dismissively and keep going? Or rather try to get to know and understand them?" (Kapuscinski,
233). Although there are many options when reacting to an outcast, the most common reaction is to
ignore. Thus, leaving the experience itself to be

Shunning In The Scarlet Letter
In today's and even through history the word shunning was conceptualized as meaning to avoid,
ignore, or reject. It was used predominantly during the 1600s and was mainly used towards people
who don't follow a certain law or rule in religion. These people often were left on the outskirts of
their society not being able to prove or change the way people viewed them. Much of what
happened then still happens now. For example with things such as social media and the internet.
These things contributed towards an increase in isolation and negativity in this world. Such rejection
one person could face can cause psychological damage in that one individual making them feel less
important and unwanted in society. Society tends to shun for reasons that ... Show more content on

Hester in "The Scarlet Letter" is an influential person in literature that embraced her public
humiliation. She looked at her punishment with contempt and strength. The sin of adultery that she
committed was represented through her scarlet letter that she wore. She wore this letter on her chest
not as a shame or guilt , she wore it loud and proud with no regrets. For example when she wore this
letter out in public her reaction toward this was a haughty smile. She did not care what others
thought of her or the sins she had committed. The way she rid herself of this void was turning to
sewing garments of clothing, and doing charity work. Even after doing all these things, her
reputation as an outcast and loner still made her the talk of the town. For example children often
laughed and mocked her, preachers also would come up to her in the street and start to deliver a
lecture basically trying to cleanse her from evil. Even after all the isolation and ignorance she faced
on a daily basis she never let that ruin her life. This such shunning and hate she once endured
actually made her a town's favorite. People began calling the A on her chest "Able" which stands for

Persuasive Essay On Shunning
There comes a time in your life where you feel like people want to avoid you or you feel alone in a
crowded room. We go through it with family, close friends and even strangers. Often times, these
feelings are a result of someone shunning you. In reality, not everyone will agree with your life
decisions. People will oppose you if you're gay, a Christian, or even black just because they don't
like it. Shunning is very common in our society today. The sad part is, is that it's not paid much
attention. One of the biggest groups of people that undergo shunning on a day to day basis is the
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, better known as LGBT. They are a prime
example of what people in our society today see to be "inhumane" or "not right". Not only is the
LGBT community shunned, but also those with an undesirable race like African Americans and
Arab people, interracial couples, and even couples with a great age difference. On that note, a very

Analysis Of Amish: A Secret Life
The life lead by those belonging to the amish church is often viewed as extreme or harsh. The short

Old Order Amish Church forbids rejects most outside forces as they don't fit with their ideals.
Because of this, there is not many resources available for the use of non–amish to learn or

The Street Gang In LETB
In LETB, Harry is scapegoated by the roving street gang. Harry commits the horrendous act of
molesting a young boy, however that is not grounds for dismissing his death as justice according to
Girard's theory. This is further proved because Selby has the street gang murder him. Throughout the
section 'Strike', they show constant disdain for Harry and use him for beer and food. The importance
of the street gang's role as the 'scapegoaters', is that they show homosexual tendencies throughout
the novel . However here, they call Harry a 'freak' and abuse him (176). After they crucify him, they
go into the bathroom of the Greeks, seemingly happier than they had been since they beat a sailor up
in 'Another Day, Another Dollar'. In both the incident with the sailor and with Harry, questions of
masculinity and impotence were the forefront causes for the street gang's violence. This suggests
that Selby shows their inability to come to terms with their own sexuality; and how it is much easier
to strike out than accept their feelings, as seen in above in the chapter on 'Hypermasculinity'. The
rape of the prostitute Tralala is also suggestive of this, as it seems to include most of the males in
Sunset Park. They come together to violently rape her, seemingly to take out their own feelings of
inferiority and impotence on her. Like with Girard's 'sexually aggressive goat', Tralala is chosen
because she is seen as an abject woman. In the conservative conforming world of 1950s America ,

Don T Jeopardize Men's Vulnerability To Emotion?
Shunning Emotions Jeopardizes Men's Vulnerability to Emotion Stop crying, boys don't cry is the
most common phrase typically used by parents when raising their little boys to become true men,
yet what the parents do not acknowledge is that they are also teaching them to shun their emotions.
Shunning their emotions can cause psychological harm to the individual by making them believe
that their emotions must be concealed from everyone around them. Remarks such as don't be a sissy,
take it like a man and boys have to be tough aside from implying that they must not show negative
emotions also implies a negative connotation toward women. Although it may seem like most
research is done in where more positive emotions are regarded to the physic of the man than
negative emotions not much has been focused on how keeping negative emotions to themselves
becomes risky for the individual as they age. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Amish Shunning Practices
America is filled with multiple cultures from different parts of the world. The most secretive culture
is the Amish. Amish do not use modern day technology, and they have strict rules to follow. If
anyone breaks those rules, they receive a punish that is more severe than we would imagine.
Shunning, the punishment, affects different parts of Amish life. The first main point is shunning is
the practice of avoiding, ignoring, or rejecting through antipathy or caution. This practice is used to
keep the Ordung, Amish rules, from being corrupt by whomever went against the church (Hostetler
2010). Shunning is a form of discipline, and is not taken lightly within the church. Outsiders would

The sinner and anyone they love are affected by the punishment of being shunned (Mission to
Amish People 2015). For example, close friends, parents, children, and spouses must not interact
with the shunned member whether it be a business transaction or simply just eating dinner together
(Groberman 2008). The shunned may attend any family gather, but they must sit at a different table
as the rules require them to do (Shunning 2007). Any business must be avoided with shunned
members, unless a third party is handling the money (Zavada 2015). 1 Corinthians 5:8 verse states
that, "You must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister, but is sexually
immoral or greedy, an idolater or slander, a drunkard or a swindler. Do not even eat with such
people." Romans 16:17 verse states, "I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who
cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned.
Keep away from them." In conclusion, many may think that the Amish are the only ones that shun
or excommunicate their fellow members, but that's not true. The Catholic Church will also
excommunicate their members for sinning. The Amish church is based on multiple Christian
principles, and shunning is used to uphold those beliefs. Punishment for Amish church members

twenty–two year old Amish woman who lives near Lancaster County, in Hickory Hollow. Her love,
Dan Fisher died four years ago. Katie is engaged to widowed Bishop John with four kids: Nancy,
Hickory John, Levi, and Jacob. She feels like she is not good enough to marry such a man of
authority when something inside pulls for worldly things. Katie's mother, Rebecka Lapp, is an
obedient, submissive wife to Samuel Lapp. Katie has only three brothers: Benjamin, ... Show more

someone did take it from the attic. While Katie has troubles being a submissive Amish woman, Levi
and Ella Mae, the "wise woman" who people seek for wisdom, learn the reason to Katie's troubles.
There is a woman looking for a Rebecka and is only saw by the two. She says she needs to find her

the color of her hair, auburn, only shared by one other person in Hickory Hollow, Katie Lapp.
Rebecka received the letter and it horrified her; her baby's mom was dying and wants to meet her.
She burns the letter with a heavy heart. Although she soon feels the need to tell Katie the truth after

Shunning in the United States today seems like a usual to people today. It usually is done to the
popular or famous groups but sometimes is done to ordinary people who have done something
extremely bad. Some reasons why to shun people would be if a person commits a murder and got
away with it or some cheats in a popular sport by taking athletic enhancing drugs. Most shunning
tends to go away after a long time or after another person commits a worse crime. The Tour de
France is just one of the main races in the world that has been cheated on by the use of illegal drugs.
One of the main competitors in these races is Lance Armstrong. He is also one of the main drug
users in these races as well. He won the Tour de France seven consecutive times in a row. Some of
the other riders and bystanders that watched these races questioned Lance Armstrongs ability to win
these races. Everyone knew he was good but not that good. Finally it came out that Lance
Armstrong had been using EPO throughout his career. He finally admitted to using this drug on the
Oprah Winfrey show and it went viral. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The surprising thing about taking those trophies was that they were never distributed to any of his
rival competitors. One of the reasons bikers believe they weren't distributed was because the list
could probably go on forever of drug users in the Tour de France. The problem was that the only
way for young riders to compete with the older, more experienced riders was to take athletic
enhancing drugs. The whole sport was ruined by this drug and there was no way to get it

What is a Community? Essay example
A community is established when more than two people share the same values and through time this
personal connection evolves into a fellowship governed by rituals, traditions, and a particular form
of communication that when taken together makes a group of individuals whether living in a
specific geographical area or connected by ideals so distinct that their distinguishing marks allow
them to stand out from among the crowd. They do not just believe in something like an organization
but they need each other to survive and thrive. A good example is the Old Order Amish Mennonite
community wherein the community serves as source of identity, strength and provides the reason
why they should sustain the community's way of life. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Communities are affected, and in a sense defined by, forces that affect community members and
their space. The forces can range from outside organizations such as the government and large
corporations ... These components of the community vary infinitely, and thus no two communities
are the same; even a given community is not the same over time (Cnaan & Milofsky, p. 1)
Based on this definition it is interesting to note that the Old Order Amish Mennoite community
satisfies the requirements of place, interests and communion. Aside from being a perfect example of
a community the Amish people exemplify what it means to be a part of a community that it is their
source of identity, strength, and sustainability. Each individual exists for the community but as a
whole the community nurtures each member and therefore it is unthinkable for an Amish man or
woman to leave their community behind. On the other hand many Americans feel they must "get
involved." In public life as well as in private, we can discern the habits that sustain individualism
and commitment as well as what makes them problematic. (Bellah, p.74) For the Amish Mennonite
community the purpose of the community is very clear. First, it provides them a sense of identity,
not only who they are as of the present but also helps them to trace their origins and the reason for

subcultures because their beliefs separate these subcultures from any other Christian denomination.
The Amish are one subculture that has certain beliefs that separate them from other Christian
denominations. The Bible influences their idea of the way they should dress; Therefore they believe
that modesty is humility and what they wear helps display their faith. Amish men and boys only
wear dark solid color clothing with cut vest jackets. They do not wear belts, buttons, and jewelry
because of its flashy appearance and boastfulness it displays. Females of the Amish community are
to wear calf–length solid color dresses with either a black or white aprons. On their heads, they have
to wear prayer caps. These prayer caps allow the women to pray whenever they want to, because
they are not allowed to pray by men without it. Amish women are never to cut their hair and the
Amish men do not grow their hair out; however, they can grow facial hair once they get married.
There are many rules on what the Amish can and cannot wear . Modesty is great, however to that
extent other Christians will disagree. Other Christians believe that no matter what you wear, God
will not love you less.

Shunning In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter
Many people can probably recount a time where they have shunned another or been shunned out of
fear, jealousy, prejudice, religious differences, or other embarrassment. This comes as no surprise as
shunning has been a part of society for centuries, used commonly as a form of punishment on an
individual or group. Many find that the art of shunning is a public form of aggressive behavior that
causes more problems than solutions (). One of the most popular novels of our time that shows the
harmful effects of shunning is Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, which tells the story of a
young Puritan woman in the 1600s who was shunned by her community after she committed
adultery. Hester Prynne's story is uncommonly similar to that of Monica Lewinsky, who was
nationally shamed after news came out that she had had indecent relations with President Bill
Clinton. Hester Prynne, the main protagonist in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, was a
young Puritan who came to Massachusetts and experienced many hardships. Although Hester was

The girl's name was Avellana; she was born paralyzed her mind was as sharp as ever. The only thing
that matched her brains was her beauty, but due to the praise she was given she became very
prideful. Throughout her younger years, her brother had become great friends. He went on an

One cool day she finally decided to go search for her older brother.

After the perilous journey to the summit of the volcano, Avellana sees the two dragons, known as
Nagafen and Wuoshi, that has taken her beloved brother. One of the dragons had scales as red as
rubies. The other, obviously the female, had scales as green as emeralds, and she was tending to her
egg. She had heard that their breath is so hot that it can melt plate armor and incinerates anything in
its path. She spoke in a loud booming voice "You there Nagafen and Wuoshi, Rulers of the Lands,

Analysis Of The Amish Way: Patient Faith In A Perilous World
The Amish Way: Patient Faith in a Perilous World is a book written by Donald B. Kraybill, Steven
M. Nolt, and David L. Weaver–Zercher that describes the perseverance, faithfulness and forbearance
of the Amish culture. Consequently, the book was inspired by a novel the authors previously wrote,
which is called Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy which covered how the Amish
are quick to forgive others. Through interviewing many people in the Amish circle, the authors soon
realized that forgiveness is ingrained into Amish life unlike any other community. This realization
that there is more to the Amish lifestyle than buggies and old fashioned clothing, provided the
writers motivation of composing a new book on the spiritual heartbeat ... Show more content on

The first person I connected with through the novel was a man named Abner. When the authors
illustrated the tight knit community the Amish had, they introduced Abner. During one of their times
speaking with him, he brought them outside. He said "Let me show you where my family lives"
(Nolt, David, Weaver–Zercher; 3). He could point to the houses of his sisters, and the roads his
relatives lived on. This reminded me of my relatives who live in Northwest Ohio. My two aunts, my
grandfather and my uncle live on the same road. The tight knit living space they have brings them
closer together, similarly to the Amish. The second person I connected with was Sheila, who
coincidentally created Sheilaism. Sheilaism was created by a woman named Sheila, and she states "I
don't remember the last time I went to church...my faith has carried me a long way. It's Sheilaism"
(Nolt, David, Weaver–Zercher; 32). In other words, the faith in herself has carried her through life;
not the church or the lord. I can connect to her ideals because as I believe there is a spiritual being,
but I can not assume that they will come to my rescue each time I am in need; I need to have faith in
myself to carry me through

Sarah Mcquilkin And The Great Depression
"There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that

condition that is characterized by extreme feelings of sadness, worthlessness or hopelessness,
fatigue, irritability, loss of appetite, inability to concentrate, and insomnial or excessive sleeping.
Statistics show that between ten percent and fifteen percent of young people exhibit symptoms of
depression. Depression may have physical or emotional causes and may require long–term

Some people have easily pushed aside this issue, completely underestimating how many people it's
affecting but when reading Lisa Mayoh's quote, your mind will be completely changed. "Over thirty
thousand children under eighteen are prescribed antidepressants." That's a lot of young children who
are being affected by this drug day after day but the real argument is over whether it is helping them
or hurting them. In most cases it ends up helping. The sad reality is that "no parent wants their
teenager to down a handful of antidepressants everyday to fight anxiety or depression" as stated in
article "Are We Over–Medicating Our Children". Although that reality is frightening for people to
deal with, many parents will agree that taking a few pills every day has improved their child's
quality of life tremendously and has proven to be worth it in several aspects. Mary Sullivan is the
mother of a sixteen year old boy who has been fighting depression for two years. In her words, "it
was so difficult because every parent wants their kids to be perfect and you don't want to accept the
fact that something might be wrong with your child." This is all very understandable but she has also
been quoted to say that once she got over this her son was put on antidepressants and he is now the
happiest she's seen him since he was little.

Beyond the Divide Book Report Essay
Book Report
BEYOND THE DIVIDE
By: Kathryn Lasky
The reason I chose this book is because it is about a different culture and a different life than of
anyone I know.
Beyond the Divide is about a young Amish girl who felt suffocated living in the Amish community.
Meribah Simon had grown up in the Amish community and the strict rules of the community felt
like walls closing in around her. Her father had been shunned by the elders of the community and
when Meribah found out that her father was leaving to join the gold rush she decided to go with
him. On the trip to California there were many good times and just as many bad; if not more. On the
journey she and her father were traveling with a group of people that were going to ... Show more

When some time had passed Meribah's father had gotten a wound from helping someone fix
something. When their wagon got broken down they could not go on any further and the families
with them did not want to take her father but they agreed to take her. She loved her father dearly and
would not let him be left behind. The greed for gold caused many of the people to leave behind
many of the others in the group for the sake of getting to the gold as soon as possible. I can't say that
I wouldn't have been a better person than that because I have never been in such a situation. I only
hope that my choices would be different and greed would be overcome with love and the choice to
stay and help a human being in need. The determination to survive was greater than just giving up
and dying. Meribah and her father were left behind to fend for themselves. The cold had come and it
was her job to keep her and her father alive because her father was ill and could not help. She went
out and hunted for things to build a little wagon on her own. There were many things others had
thrown out so there were many things to choose from. I think that when faced with tough situations
a person will somehow get through if they have the determination. Sometimes when I have to do
something and there is no one to help or do it for me I feel as if I have that responsibility and I do
what I have to do. Many changes came

The Amish Culture
The Amish Culture is motivated by the Amish religion. Their religion teaches that they must be
separate themselves from the sin in the world to receive salvation. Everything the Amish do is
intended to be a way of upholding a separate way of life. Amish culture dates all they way back to
1693 when Jakob Ammann split from the Mennonites. Amish men and women have since had their
roles in the community dictated by the church and the teaching of the Ordnung, a set of unwritten
rules based upon the teachings of the bible. Each year, the members of every individual community
vote on the Ordnung. Because they vote each year, there are variations of the Ordnung in each
different church ("Understanding The Amish Culture."). In the Amish culture, church ... Show more

Jakob Ammann, the founder of the Amish movement, was a tailor. He saw the influence that
clothing had on people and how it identified a person's position in life. He noticed that success and
achievement were often proclaimed by your appearance. It only makes sense that Amish clothing is
simple and does not conform to the rest of the world because Amish religion is based upon being
separated from the rest of the world. Amish clothing represents their separation from the world. The
Ordnung stresses a dress code that is very simple and does not conform to the rest of the world.
Most of Jakob Ammann's followers were farmers when he split from the Mennonites. Since they
were farmers, early Amish dress was functional and simple. Since then, the Amish have continued to
grow. The Amish have continued the tradition of their distinct Amish clothing and over 1700 Amish
communities have remained consistent in their dress code. Amish clothing is handmade from simple
fabrics and is very plain. The use of Velcro and zippers are banned and buttons are highly frowned
upon. Instead, they fasten clothes with pins and hook closures. They consider their dress a way of
distancing themselves from the rest of the world. Amish clothing is an expression of obedience,
separation, humility, and simplicity. For men, simple suits with no collars, pockets, pleats, cuffs, or
belt loops. Men also wear many styles of hats. Their hair is usually a bowl cut because it must be
simple. Men must be clean–shaven until they are married. Once a man is married, they are required
to grow a beard but mustaches are not allowed. Amish women wear long sleeves, full skirts, and
aprons. Women do not cut their hair and it is worn up in a bun covered typically by a bonnet.
Women are not allowed to wear any kind of jewelry. Women and girls typically wear a prayer
covering, a type of hat, unless they are

baby shortly after birth, and Ellie Harrison, a lawyer from New York, is brought in as Fitch's defense
attorney. Among several variables in the case, there are some concerns that Fitch has, though she
doesn't necessarily communicate them all verbally. These problems involve difficulty in persuading
others of her virginity and innocence in the case, a memory barrier impeding her reliability as a
victim and witness, and communication hurdles in her relationships with family members and

The objectives that will bring us closer to accomplishing this goal follow. One, Fitch, Sinclair, and I

about simple topics. Two, we approach more sensitive subjects, especially unplanned pregnancy,
safe sex, continuing the relationship when Fitch's Amish family arranged her marriage with her
boyfriend, and future implications of the relationship. Three, we will find and apply tools and
techniques to use in the future to maintain communication established in therapy. Also, to aid Fitch
in bringing her brother back home, Katie, her family, and I will complete similar therapeutic
interventions on a family basis instead of on a couple's basis. To elaborate, Fitch, Sinclair, and I will
have couple's therapy sessions, and Katie, her family, and I will have family therapy sessions for
twelve weeks. In couple's therapy, we will also create a plan to facilitate future communication by
having Fitch and Sinclair write to each other at least once a week. Addressing family issues, I would
have Fitch's father practice active listening during therapy and at home, so Katie and her mother can
feel more comfortable speaking with him. Again, we will know we have completed our goals when
Fitch and Sinclair are able to communicate more effectively, and when family matters at home are

Why Did The Amish Society Build Up
The Amish
Hi everyone!
Today I am going to talk about the Amish People, but before I do that I would like to begin by
explaining what it means to be Amish
Firstly I would like all of you to use your imagination and think back in time when our society
weren't really developed. A time when you or you, I mean everyone was probably working on their
farms and homes for a living by only using one tool, which was their hands. I am talking about a
time before computers and internet. This was the society during 18 and 19 century.
The way people used to live 300 hundred years ago is in the same manner as the Amish people are
living to day How did the Amish society build up?
The Amish was founded in the border areas between German, Belgium and the Netherlands by a
man called Jakob Ammann in 1693–1697. He made up rules like washing your feet's before praying
and simplicity with your clothing and this rules are still in the same order now days. The Amish
people even have their own language it is called Pennsylvania Dutch which is a combination
between Dutch, English and German. But to work in the society they do learn English at school. ...

Shunning In The Scarlet Letter

  • 1. Shunning In The Scarlet Letter Many people can probably recount a time where they have shunned another or been shunned out of fear, jealousy, prejudice, religious differences, or other ____. This comes as no surprise as shunning has been a part of society for centuries, used commonly as a form of punishment on an individual or group. Many find that the art of shunning as a –––––––– form of aggressive behavior that causes more problems than solutions (). One of the most popular novels of our time that shows the harmful affects of shunning is Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, which tells the story of a young Puritan woman in the 1600s who was shunned by her community after she committed adultery. Hester Prynne's story is uncommonly similar to that of Monica Lewinsky, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Shunning Research Paper I Personally think that shunning still exists today due to the fact of people believing there higher than others and can make them aside just as they please but to think there humans just like them. Shunning is basically putting aside someone such as a kid in the group just doesn't fit in, too fat, too ugly, too poor, too smart, too nerdy, too whatever or an other simple terms, some people just do not get along with each other and the shunning begins. Most of shunning tends to begin in school for which in the bad side can continue for a major part in their life. In the Case of Someone making a mistake that too others is something horrible but a mistake that anyone out there can make thats when shunning begins. It Begins as in criticizing that person and then talking about that person until many other people begin to also. That person is feeling terrible lonely disgraced and just disrespected but due to all this no one actually tends to care about that person they feel as if there an alien from another planet and want no type ... They can also begin to leave her out of things always setting her aside. To a Point where the girl has no one and feels as if the world just came down on her. I Personally Can Relate to this type of shunning because i'm not as pretty as other girls and don't have a pretty face or pretty body as they have. Shunning started for me as in leaving me aside from things, saying mean things about me, being rude to me and other stuff and in my view i felt horrible i felt very sad and for me it was just plain horrible because i am a very sensitive girl and they take advantage of it because they know i can't say anything back and if i do it gets worse for me but that is going to have to ... The Role Of Shunning In The 17th Century Shunned persistently avoid, ignore, or reject (someone or something) through antipathy or caution and also can be the act of social rejection, or emotional distance. In a religious context, shunning is a formal decision by a denomination or a congregation to cease interaction with an individual or a group, and follows a particular set of rules Reasons people were shunned in the 17th century A lack of (christian) religious faith back in this time period everybody was very religious they followed by the bible for example the 10 commandments ''You shall have no other gods before Me.'' it means to love something more than God You should worship God instead of Your clothes , shoes , computer or TV. • 13. The Dixie Chicks Analysis This society is built with a default, and that default is to shun the disliked, the unknown, and the minority. "So long as the most vulnerable people in our population are consigned to places that the rest of us will always shun and flee and view with fear, I am afraid that educational denial, medical and economic devastation, and aesthetic degradation will be inevitable" (Kozol). The question is, is that the right way to turn? The Dixie Chicks are one of many examples of people in modern day society who spoke out for what they believed in and who were punished by the default. While they may not fall under the medical denial or economic devastation that Kozol is referring to, they fall under the category of aesthetic degradation. The action ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many comparisons can be drawn between this unfortunate soul and the Dixie Chicks. The first is that both parties were never forgiven, Hester is shunned even after she comes back to Boston years and years later and "CNN's report in 2013, many of the Dixie Chicks former fans still bore a grudge: A Country Music TV poll asked whether the Dixie Chicks should be forgiven, and over a third still answered 'no'"(Parker). This shows that even when years have gone by society still holds on to anger more than any other feeling or memory. As well as the fact that both were treated more harshly because they were women. Boston did inquire after the father of younger Pearl, but no one much cared since they had caught the woman, and of course according to the puritan interpretation of the bible women are the route of sin. Maines was later quoted saying ,"It makes me a little irritated that people come down way harder on the girls than the boys" (Leaderman). How Is Technology Being Blurred 1 Ford Coleton Ford Dr. Valerie Kolbinger ENG 121 03 13 March 2017 The Blur of Technology It is no question that technology is changing people and the way we live. Almost every person depends on technology in some way to get through the day. Weather its smartphones, washing machines, toasters, or refrigerators, all of these common technologies were invented to increase our productivity and make life easier. The underlining question in this essay is to highlight the concerns of technology and prove that people are being blurred in their connections to digital reality and physical reality, work life and family, and our dependency on technology. First, people in the 21st century have been blurred in regards to the relationship between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In that fact, it would be hard to disconnect completely from technology like the Amish settlement, but there are still ways to limit out technology use. The blurring of boundaries can be seen both as a positive and negative. In terms of being positive, smartphones are making people more productive at work by making resources more accessible. For example, people can now work from home and never have to leave, which is very helpful for some. Some negatives of blurring boundaries with technology could best be seen in our awareness of being in a virtual online world versus the physical reality. Individuals need to make sure they are still engaged with others and not distracted by the blur of technology. I have gained confidence and an independent spirit from the hardships I have experienced. The rejection I have experienced from my family is the obstacle bearing the greatest impact on my life. After my family left the Amish, we faced rejection and were shunned by the rest of the family. To this day, sixteen years later, this shunning is still occurring. I have not met or even seen most of my extended family as a result of this punishment. While this hardship has caused much suffering, it has also brought out strengths in myself I did not know I had. One of these strengths is the sense of independence I have gained. Being content with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Does Shunning Mean A Bush Among Trees Having to deal with problems on your own is a good thing, but if it's about people shunning you and treating you differently, it is a whole different story. Shunning means people around you choose to disown you, not having any respect for you at all. Also, shunning means people leave you out of everything such as activities, events, or even important meetings. Lastly, shunning means people also do not want anything to do with you at all. Shunning is important because it can cause a mature person to act as an immature person, which is not right to treat a person like they are worth nothing. It's not about how bad you dislike the person, it's about how mature you act about the situation of a person being an outcast. Also, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In conclusion, I learned that there are nice people in this world even if other people are shunning you, they will stick up for you and care for you no matter what. All you must do is allow yourself to find the right people to be around that have positive energy. But on the other hand, it is ok to handle your problems and still have a great positive mind set. To be become a better person it's better for me to admit to my problems and work them out. Second, it's about building a relationship with yourself and other people around me to help build that positive vibe. Third, it helps me grow as a person and it grows my emotions and feeling on how to handle it like a mature person. Forth, it's about how people show love to me and respect me as a person not just an empty shell. To be a mature person, I must learn how shunning can make me a better person by building a relationship, grow in the mind and love. The reason I must know these things is because it helps me to move on in life and, it's better to have these things on taking the first steps on becoming a mature person. He or she may do things that are considered not ethical, he may break the law, or he may be rejected by society. It is putative to say that shunning is in some way a type of bullying. In other words, it can affect them to a great extent. Everyone had been a victim or a witness of shunning. The person receiving humiliation never feels good about the whole situation. They seem as if the situation does not bother him on the outside, but deeply inside it has an affect on them. Considering this, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is a big time drug lord in Mexico. He was born April 4, 1957. As a child, his family was in penury. His father was an abuser and a drug dealer as well. While a teenager, he got kicked out of his home. Hester was looked upon as one of the worst because she was the first in her town to do such a thing as she did. She went to jail for a period time, was publicly humiliated on the scaffold, and had to wear the letter "A" upon her bosom. She was an example to the people. Her sin was commonly used in sermons in the church. Hester became popular for the sin she committed. Similarly, El Chapo did jail time. • 33. Public Shunning Research Paper Jared Fogle Public shunning is the act of persistently rejecting and ostracizing someone for their actions. It was a common occurrence during the Puritan times, and it affected the outcasts and the loved ones of the outcasts. Public shunning is a way to punish those who have sinned and have violated a community's values. It has not always been as lenient as it is now. In the Puritan times, people were publicly humiliated in many ways. Some were branded, displayed on the scaffold, or simply paraded in front ot the town. The worse case for public shunning were executions in front of the whole town. In today's world, public shunning is not as harsh. It is now done by parading an outcasts' face and sins everywhere in the world by the news and articles. One of the most recent broadcasted Shunnings is Jared Fogle. November 19, 2015, Jared Fogle pleaded guilty in court for statutory rape and child pornography. Hester was considered an outcast because she was named unholy and unfaithful by her community, and the puritans did not want her unfaithfulness to spread. This is symbolic of the ignoring and shunning and even the legal troubles that those who go against the main idea purported in society face. It is also symbolic of those that dare to be active thinkers in a passive thinking world. The powers in charge in Leonard Mead's world believe that him walking every night could upset their social stability. In the short story, this takes the form of the police arresting him and taking him to a psychiatric centre. This ostracizes the Pedestrian and makes him be seen as a social pariah. • 49. Metamorphosis By Franz Kafka Argument Essay A collective amount of humans create our humanity. Peering into the core of the human race, the realization of all being one in the same becomes prominent. Division amongst humanity comes in physical appearance, money, and location based culture. With the recognition of those differences comes a consistent result. Backs are turned, and individuals are shunned because of uncontrollable factors. The "experience" of being an outcast is essentially universal. The primary example of this is in the short story "The Metamorphosis", by Franz Kafka. Gregor Samsa, a hard–working son who provided for his family was shunned because of his change in physical appearance. A man by the name of Bronislaw Malinowski traveled to his own research site in the Trobriand Islands. It was his goal to learn about other people, and he wanted to gain information about his neighbor's customs. "He himself, as if to spite all colonial customs, pitched his tent in the middle of a local village, and lived among the local people. What he experienced turned out to be no easy experience. In his diary... he continually mentions problems, bad moods, despair, and depression" (Kapuscinski, 238). Due to Malinowski's cultural differences, the locals did not accept him which darkened his experience. Some may say that the experience of being an outsider is not universal. There are three possible ways to react to the many differences of the so–called "other". Shunning is not the ordinary reaction. "Should they throw themselves in fury on those other people? Or walk past dismissively and keep going? Or rather try to get to know and understand them?" (Kapuscinski, 233). It was used predominantly during the 1600s and was mainly used towards people who don't follow a certain law or rule in religion. These people often were left on the outskirts of their society not being able to prove or change the way people viewed them. Much of what happened then still happens now. For example with things such as social media and the internet. These things contributed towards an increase in isolation and negativity in this world. Such rejection one person could face can cause psychological damage in that one individual making them feel less important and unwanted in society. Society tends to shun for reasons that ... She looked at her punishment with contempt and strength. The sin of adultery that she committed was represented through her scarlet letter that she wore. She wore this letter on her chest not as a shame or guilt , she wore it loud and proud with no regrets. For example when she wore this letter out in public her reaction toward this was a haughty smile. She did not care what others thought of her or the sins she had committed. The way she rid herself of this void was turning to sewing garments of clothing, and doing charity work. Even after doing all these things, her reputation as an outcast and loner still made her the talk of the town. For example children often laughed and mocked her, preachers also would come up to her in the street and start to deliver a lecture basically trying to cleanse her from evil. Even after all the isolation and ignorance she faced on a daily basis she never let that ruin her life. This such shunning and hate she once endured actually made her a town's favorite. • 57. Persuasive Essay On Shunning There comes a time in your life where you feel like people want to avoid you or you feel alone in a crowded room. We go through it with family, close friends and even strangers. Often times, these feelings are a result of someone shunning you. In reality, not everyone will agree with your life decisions. People will oppose you if you're gay, a Christian, or even black just because they don't like it. Shunning is very common in our society today. The sad part is, is that it's not paid much attention. One of the biggest groups of people that undergo shunning on a day to day basis is the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, better known as LGBT. They are a prime example of what people in our society today see to be "inhumane" or "not right". The short documentary "Amish: A Secret Life" gives outsiders a glance into the world inside the church. The Old Order Amish Church forbids rejects most outside forces as they don't fit with their ideals. • 69. The Street Gang In LETB In LETB, Harry is scapegoated by the roving street gang. Harry commits the horrendous act of molesting a young boy, however that is not grounds for dismissing his death as justice according to Girard's theory. This is further proved because Selby has the street gang murder him. Throughout the section 'Strike', they show constant disdain for Harry and use him for beer and food. The importance of the street gang's role as the 'scapegoaters', is that they show homosexual tendencies throughout the novel . However here, they call Harry a 'freak' and abuse him (176). After they crucify him, they go into the bathroom of the Greeks, seemingly happier than they had been since they beat a sailor up in 'Another Day, Another Dollar'. In both the incident with the sailor and with Harry, questions of masculinity and impotence were the forefront causes for the street gang's violence. This suggests that Selby shows their inability to come to terms with their own sexuality; and how it is much easier to strike out than accept their feelings, as seen in above in the chapter on 'Hypermasculinity'. The rape of the prostitute Tralala is also suggestive of this, as it seems to include most of the males in Sunset Park. They come together to violently rape her, seemingly to take out their own feelings of inferiority and impotence on her. Like with Girard's 'sexually aggressive goat', Tralala is chosen because she is seen as an abject woman. In the conservative conforming world of 1950s America , ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shunning Emotions Jeopardizes Men's Vulnerability to Emotion Stop crying, boys don't cry is the most common phrase typically used by parents when raising their little boys to become true men, yet what the parents do not acknowledge is that they are also teaching them to shun their emotions. Amish do not use modern day technology, and they have strict rules to follow. If anyone breaks those rules, they receive a punish that is more severe than we would imagine. Shunning, the punishment, affects different parts of Amish life. The first main point is shunning is the practice of avoiding, ignoring, or rejecting through antipathy or caution. This practice is used to keep the Ordung, Amish rules, from being corrupt by whomever went against the church (Hostetler 2010). Shunning is a form of discipline, and is not taken lightly within the church. Outsiders would see this practice as cruel, when it is used to maintain a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The sinner and anyone they love are affected by the punishment of being shunned (Mission to Amish People 2015). For example, close friends, parents, children, and spouses must not interact with the shunned member whether it be a business transaction or simply just eating dinner together (Groberman 2008). The shunned may attend any family gather, but they must sit at a different table as the rules require them to do (Shunning 2007). Any business must be avoided with shunned members, unless a third party is handling the money (Zavada 2015). 1 Corinthians 5:8 verse states that, "You must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister, but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slander, a drunkard or a swindler. Do not even eat with such people." Romans 16:17 verse states, "I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them." In conclusion, many may think that the Amish are the only ones that shun or excommunicate their fellow members, but that's not true. The Catholic Church will also excommunicate their members for sinning. The Amish church is based on multiple Christian principles, and shunning is used to uphold those beliefs. Shunning In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter Many people can probably recount a time where they have shunned another or been shunned out of fear, jealousy, prejudice, religious differences, or other embarrassment. This comes as no surprise as shunning has been a part of society for centuries, used commonly as a form of punishment on an individual or group. When their wagon got broken down they could not go on any further and the families with them did not want to take her father but they agreed to take her. She loved her father dearly and would not let him be left behind. The greed for gold caused many of the people to leave behind many of the others in the group for the sake of getting to the gold as soon as possible. I can't say that I wouldn't have been a better person than that because I have never been in such a situation. I only hope that my choices would be different and greed would be overcome with love and the choice to stay and help a human being in need. The determination to survive was greater than just giving up and dying. Meribah and her father were left behind to fend for themselves. The cold had come and it was her job to keep her and her father alive because her father was ill and could not help. She went out and hunted for things to build a little wagon on her own. There were many things others had thrown out so there were many things to choose from. I think that when faced with tough situations a person will somehow get through if they have the determination. Sometimes when I have to do something and there is no one to help or do it for me I feel as if I have that responsibility and I do what I have to do. Many changes came ... • 137. The Amish Culture The Amish Culture is motivated by the Amish religion. Their religion teaches that they must be separate themselves from the sin in the world to receive salvation. Everything the Amish do is intended to be a way of upholding a separate way of life. Amish culture dates all they way back to 1693 when Jakob Ammann split from the Mennonites. Amish men and women have since had their roles in the community dictated by the church and the teaching of the Ordnung, a set of unwritten rules based upon the teachings of the bible. Each year, the members of every individual community vote on the Ordnung. Because they vote each year, there are variations of the Ordnung in each different church ("Understanding The Amish Culture."). In the Amish culture, church ... He saw the influence that clothing had on people and how it identified a person's position in life. He noticed that success and achievement were often proclaimed by your appearance. It only makes sense that Amish clothing is simple and does not conform to the rest of the world because Amish religion is based upon being separated from the rest of the world. Amish clothing represents their separation from the world. The Ordnung stresses a dress code that is very simple and does not conform to the rest of the world. Most of Jakob Ammann's followers were farmers when he split from the Mennonites. Since they were farmers, early Amish dress was functional and simple. Since then, the Amish have continued to grow. The Amish have continued the tradition of their distinct Amish clothing and over 1700 Amish communities have remained consistent in their dress code. Amish clothing is handmade from simple fabrics and is very plain. The use of Velcro and zippers are banned and buttons are highly frowned upon. Instead, they fasten clothes with pins and hook closures. They consider their dress a way of distancing themselves from the rest of the world. Amish clothing is an expression of obedience, separation, humility, and simplicity. For men, simple suits with no collars, pockets, pleats, cuffs, or belt loops. Men also wear many styles of hats. Their hair is usually a bowl cut because it must be simple. Men must be clean–shaven until they are married. Once a man is married, they are required to grow a beard but mustaches are not allowed. Amish women wear long sleeves, full skirts, and aprons. Women do not cut their hair and it is worn up in a bun covered typically by a bonnet. Women are not allowed to wear any kind of jewelry. Women and girls typically wear a prayer covering, a type of hat, unless they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They are an interesting culture, that live isolated all around the United States. These communities are closed and no outsides are really allowed. This is what makes this culture very interesting. It makes them live 10 years longer This culture is made of people than ban pretty much all modern technology. They are farmers living off of their own land. Apparently do it in a manner that makes them live 10 year longer. Researchers studied 177 Amish people from Indiana, and found out that 43 of them had a mutant copy of the gene SERPINE1. The Amish with this gene lived to about 85 years old. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 145. Plain Truth: Assessing Katie Fitch Assessing Katie Fitch Melissa Figley SOW–5308 From the movie Plain Truth, comes a character that much of popular American culture may not understand. The movie's protagonist is a teenage woman, Katie Fitch, who is accused of killing her baby shortly after birth, and Ellie Harrison, a lawyer from New York, is brought in as Fitch's defense attorney. Among several variables in the case, there are some concerns that Fitch has, though she doesn't necessarily communicate them all verbally. These problems involve difficulty in persuading others of her virginity and innocence in the case, a memory barrier impeding her reliability as a victim and witness, and communication hurdles in her relationships with family members and friends. As my client, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The objectives that will bring us closer to accomplishing this goal follow. One, Fitch, Sinclair, and I open discourse between them as a couple, in order to get them comfortable with communicating about simple topics. Two, we approach more sensitive subjects, especially unplanned pregnancy, safe sex, continuing the relationship when Fitch's Amish family arranged her marriage with her boyfriend, and future implications of the relationship. Three, we will find and apply tools and techniques to use in the future to maintain communication established in therapy. Also, to aid Fitch in bringing her brother back home, Katie, her family, and I will complete similar therapeutic interventions on a family basis instead of on a couple's basis. To elaborate, Fitch, Sinclair, and I will have couple's therapy sessions, and Katie, her family, and I will have family therapy sessions for twelve weeks. In couple's therapy, we will also create a plan to facilitate future communication by having Fitch and Sinclair write to each other at least once a week. Addressing family issues, I would have Fitch's father practice active listening during therapy and at home, so Katie and her mother can feel more comfortable speaking with him. Again, we will know we have completed our goals when Fitch and Sinclair are able to communicate more effectively, and when family matters at home are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Forgiving In Charlie Roberts's Amish Grace The book, "Amish Grace" tells the audience a story about a school shooting in Pennsylvania and how oneself can be forgiving and have forgiveness in many abstract ways. We learn about a man named Charlie that delivers milk to serval Amish farms in the area and was known to be a friendly man as he would always pass by the Nickel Mine school on his way to make deliveries and wave to the children at the school. Until one October day, Charlie stopped by the school and chose to take the lives of several students at the schoolhouse. On October 2, 2006, Charlie Roberts came into the Nickel Mine schoolhouse shooting ten young girls but claiming the lives of five before he turned the gun on himself. Before shooting the young children, he allowed everyone to get out of the schoolhouse but the ten girls that he made line up against the chalkboard. Unlike the Amish if you are shunned, you may talk to other Amish people but you may not do things like, ride with them or eat at the same table as an Amish family. Members are expected to shun ex–members even within their own household, and those who refuse to do so may jeopardize their own standing within the church (page 148). To the Amish, they see that God ordained the church to watch over them and they have to judge their own members if they choice to not be a member anymore. If a non–Amish chose to not be a member of a church or family anymore there would not be the constant reminder of what they did, rather than the Amish believe that they need to be remind constantly of what they did and their ... • 153. Why Did The Amish Society Build Up The Amish Hi everyone! Today I am going to talk about the Amish People, but before I do that I would like to begin by explaining what it means to be Amish Firstly I would like all of you to use your imagination and think back in time when our society weren't really developed. A time when you or you, I mean everyone was probably working on their farms and homes for a living by only using one tool, which was their hands. I am talking about a time before computers and internet. This was the society during 18 and 19 century. The way people used to live 300 hundred years ago is in the same manner as the Amish people are living to day How did the Amish society build up? The Amish was founded in the border areas between German, Belgium and the Netherlands by a man called Jakob Ammann in 1693–1697. He made up rules like washing your feet's before praying and simplicity with your clothing and this rules are still in the same order now days. The Amish people even have their own language it is called Pennsylvania Dutch which is a combination between Dutch, English and German. But to work in the society they do learn English at school. ...
