Dr. Abbott And Social Welfare History
Abstract
Many pioneers have been influential in advancing the field of social work and one of the early
influencers was Edith Abbott. According to the Social Welfare History Project, Abbott was an early
social reformer born in 1876 and lived until 1957. Dr. Abbott was known as a "Social Reformer,
Author, Administrator and Educator". (Sorenson, "Abbott, Edith – Social Welfare History Project")
This paper will explore the background which brought Dr. Abbott to the forefront of the early social
work world by speaking about her ethnicity, family background, political affiliation, and reasons
why they dedicated their lives to helping others. In addition, this paper will discuss the settings and
subfields most associated with the individual, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edith's political affiliation was pro–suffrage for woman and republican. Her family were Quakers, as
was her mother, Elizabeth. Elizabeth played a crucial role in women's higher education and also,
graduated from Rockford Seminary in 1868 (Women 's Intellectual Contributions, n.d.). Edith's
father, Othman, was a soldier, lawyer and banker and perhaps more influentially the first lieutenant
governor of the state of Nebraska. Early in Edith's life, her father had financial troubles at his place
of work, which caused the family to have to work for years to recoup their hard earned money
(Women 's Intellectual Contributions, n.d.). Early in her educational career, Edith's parents enrolled
her in Brownell Hall, where Edith graduated from in 1893 with top honors and as valedictorian.
Upon graduation, Abbott taught high school in her hometown; this lead her to continue her own
education and began taking classes to prepare for college. She went on to attend the University of
Nebraska and graduated in 1901 and from there continued her education further by achieving her
doctoral degree in economics from the University of Chicago in 1905 (Women 's Intellectual
Contributions, n.d.). According to The National Association of Social Workers website, Edith also
studied at the London School of Economics. From there, she continued on to teach at Wellesley
College until 1908,

Abbott Vs. Abbott: Case Study
"Ethics is based on well–founded standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to
do" (article, 1989, revised 2010). In the case of Abbott, he conducted both ethical and legal
wrongdoings against Ms. Costello, the owner of a local grocery store. Abbot violated the ethical
principle of fairness/justice by stealing meat products under the justification that he was receiving a
discount on the produce for bagging his own groceries. Legally, Abbott was liable under the tort of
conversion. Abbott's intentions and actions were due to him suffering from vitamin deficiencies and
the only way for him to alleviate said deficiencies were from consuming meat products. However,
meat "is the most expensive element of groceries, and way beyond Abbott's means". Abbott's
desperate situation forced his hand in the case of stealing from Ms. Costello, but the legal and
ethical points of the situation were wrong for him to undertake. ... Show more content on

Abbott's friends cannot be legally charged for simply suggesting and encouraging him to do so. The
test for the tort of conversion falls in line with this situation. There was an intentional interference
with Ms. Castello's property, in this case the attempted discount on the meat products. Additionally,
there was a refusal to surrender the chattel when the entitled person demanded them to, in this case
Abbott was confronted by Ms. Castello and he refused to give up his groceries. To quote, "when
challenged, abbot gets both pompous and haughty. Abbott tells Costello it isn't stealing." These
events implicate Abbott's tort of

Dan Abbott Research Paper
Interview Essay Throughout all of the world's important events there have been people there,
experiencing these affairs first hand. There is no better source for information than somebody who
has lived through the topic of discussion. That is why no website can compare to talking to
somebody who lived through the event. Dan Abbott is one of those people who has lived through
some very important events in human history and can talk about it. Dan Abbott is a retired
emergency department doctor who has served in the military in the cold war. He was an officer and
flew in a patrol helicopter along the border of East and West Germany. He got out of the draft for
many years because he was going to college and medical school but after he graduated he was
forced to go to Germany and defend against the Communists. This interview taught me a lot about
my grandads life, gave me a lot of perspective on how the war in Germany affected him and also
how it is important to talk about our pasts. To begin, the interview with Dan Abbott really gave me a

Abbott really put the importance of talking about our pasts into perspective. To begin the interview
was chalk full of historical facts. But not only was it full of facts but it also made something that
would be boring to learn in a textbook, fun and personal. According to Brain World Magazine this is
a much better way to learn,"The stronger the emotions connected to an experience, the stronger the
subsequent memory." Talking to people who lived through events gives information on a more
personal level making it easier to retain. In this case, the interview process was very easy and did
not take as much effort as reading a long article and gave way more information than any other
article did. However one downside to this process is that sometime people misremember events.
Overall, interviewing Dr. Abbott really showed how important it is to talk to people who came

Brief Biography of Berenice Abbott
"Photography can never grow up if it imitates some other medium. It has to walk alone; it has to be
itself." – Berenice Abbott.
An American photographer best known for black and white photography of New York, Berenice
Abbott believed a photograph are special and unique. It cannot be copied or mimic others. A
photograph will represent the historical picture of the past. The historical past or memories of the
photograph usually have a very meaningful and emotional story behind it. A photograph has its own
significant meaning, which communicates through the details of the photo.
The photograph on the left that I have found is Migrant Mother, taken by Dorothea Lange in 1936.
In 1935, Lange and her husband, Paul Taylor, was transfer to the Resettlement Administrations, one
of Roosevelt's New Deal programs designed to help the country recovers from depression. She
began working as a photographer and took snapshots of events that happened after the depression.
The caption for this piece of photograph is title as Migrant Mother, which will give away a hint of
what the photograph is about. People would start to have an assumption that it is a woman who is
migrating to another place with her children. What kinds of assumption would you make by
observing the photograph of a mother and two lovely sons with their face turn away? In most cases,
when people first look at this photograph, they will interpret that they are poor. However, they will

Comparing Who Is On First By Abbott And Costello
There are three types of baseball player; those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and
those who wonder what happens (Tommy Lasorda). In the story who is on first Lou Costello the guy
who is trying to understand who the players names are, would be one of those guys who wonder
what in the world is happening. In Who Is on First, by Abbott and Costello they use high comedy.
This is because they use questions for the names that makes it sound like the guy who answers does
not know what is happening. Because Mr. Abbott has players that have weird names, Mr. Costello
would ask "who is on first?" Abbott would answers "Who" which makes it sound like Abbott wants
to figure out who is on the team. Since Costello has a big temper and has a

How will the building of the world's largest Coal Export Terminal at Abbott point effect Australia
and it's world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef?
Introduction:
Recently the Environmental minister for Australia, Greg Hunt, fast tracked plans that would mean
the sea bed at Abbott point will be dredged with construction reaching the Caley Valley Wetlands,
because of this these plans are possible for commencement any time after January 2015. The final
decision on this was made regardless of public consultation legalities, primarily due to the
plummeting value of coal and un–confirmed economic benefits of financing the mines and port.
With the only certified benefit of coal mining in Australia being increased job opportunities for the
industry, as according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the Australian coal mining industry
employs 54,900 people full time throughout the country and more than 145,000 people in related
employment, this is a 247% increase since recorded 10 years ago. Since this decision a staggering
504,998 signatures collectively between savethereef.org and fightforthereef.org have protested the
plans to dredge Abbott Point, a number that would significantly impact the final decision if public
consultation protocol was followed by the Australian Government. This reports analysis will

Who Is Abbott Suger?
In this introduction to a larger text, Erwin Panofsky aims to explain why Abbott Suger was so much
better at recording his involvement in the reconstruction of St Denis his fellow contemporaneous
patrons. He argues that two main motivations for Suger's extensive writings were self justification
and vanity. While supporting these two points, Panofsky also used this introduction to introduce
readers to Suger's life and work to give a well rounded image of the man.
In order to fully address Suger's writing and the motivation behind it, Panofsky needed to provide
context on who Suger was and how he interacting with his peers and rivals. Panofsky touches on his
early life, political influence and his preferred approaches to political issues, his business savvy, and
his relationship with his contemporaries like St. Bernard and the monks under his influence. It is
through the analysis of these aspects that we can see where the need for self justification and a focus
on vanity that we see in Suger's writings emerged in his life.
To support his thesis, Panofsky looked at the writings of Suger, individuals he corresponded ... Show

level, I was not a huge fan of the writing style itself. I found it to be long winded with too many
semi–colons utilized throughout. However, this is simply a personal preference on style and doesn't

the job they were doing, Ms. Gillard served as prime minister before Mr. Abbott, laying a solid
foundation for Australia. She initiated policies and procedures to help Australia become a better
place to live. Although, Australia suffered an economic crisis while Ms. Gillard was in office, she
made Australia a better place. Following, Ms. Gillard, Mr. Abbott became prime minister. He made
changes by implementing new laws. Ms. Gillard and Mr. Abbott both have different views on same
sex marriages, education, and Medicare. Ms. Gillard is a supporter of same sex marriage despite the
fact many disagree with her opinion. She stated that both heterosexual and same sex couples should
embrace civil unions. Ms. Gillard felt as, if not only Australia 's but all types of races should be able
to openly expose how they feel about their sexual preference. By expressing themselves she felt as if
it gave them enough freedom to choose what sex, gender they feel is best for them beside many

Price Gouging In The United States
The idea of price gouging can have many different perspectives on it, and is very controversial.
Price gouging is when a seller spikes their prices of goods, services, or other purchase products to a
level higher than reasonable. Ethically, I do agree with the fact that merchants shouldn't sky rocket
their product prices during a state of emergency–price gouging.
Illegally, price gouging is continuing to affect our labor market and offset the cost of living in many
states. Price gouging is continuing to affect the health of many people due to pharmaceutical
companies and their major increases in price. Lastly, price gouging just is unjust, immoral, and
against the law in states. While there are no federal regulations to price gouging and ... Show more

Price gouging occurs when a merchant drastically raises their prices on daily necessities. When
setting cities living wage and cost of living, the cost of daily necessities plays a role. Cost of living
is the amount of money needed to sustain a certain level of living, including basic expenses such as
housing, food, taxes and health care.
A book called The fundamentals of minimum wage fixing by Francois Eyraud and Catherine Saget
talks brief about cost of living and how it is incorporated into minimum wage. The authors gave
different ways on how the cost of living is determined. According to the two, they shared that the
cost of living is determined by the price of goods (standard necessities to live), and wage statistics
submitted by the United States Department of Labor (Eyraud, Saget, 2005). Both living wage and
cost of living differentiates by state and cities. Cost of living effects how the government set the
nations minimum wage. When merchants continuously raise prices of daily necessities and they are
unreasonable, it can affect the cost of living. To prevent this trickle down effect, the United States
government should create federal regulations on price gouging to prevent an increase in cost of
living which then leads to an increase in minimum wage, which then leads to possible jobs

Billy Abbott And Lou Costello
There may not be a more well–known comedy routine in the American consciousness than that of
"Who's on First?" by Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. The routine has been parodied, satirized and
imitated by countless TV shows, movies, and theatre productions, and the joke has become almost a
cultural shorthand for confusing situations.
Because "Who's on first?" has become such a large part of popular culture, many writers, directors
and producers make allusions to the sketch freely. However, as the producers of one Broadway show
discovered, when allusions become direct reproductions, there may be legal liability for copyright
infringement.
"Hand to God" Faces Lawsuit
The playwright, producer and promoter of the Broadway play "Hand to God" were served with a
lawsuit alleging that production infringed on Abbott & Costello's copyright to the "Who's on First?"
routine.
The play, which has been nominated for several Tony awards, features a scene where the lead
character, a teenage boy, attempts to impress a girl by performing part of the sketch with a sock
puppet. The girl does not understand the reference, and boy initially tries to claim credit before
eventually admitting that it was a famous routine from the 1950s.
According to the lawsuit, the creators of "Hand to God" used the dialogue from "Who's on First?"
without license or permission from the heirs of Abbott & Costello, and rejected a request to change
the production after the heirs sent a cease and desist letter. The heirs

needs to possibly reconsider how their subsidiary organizes their management. The problem St. Jude
Medical is having right now is not only a device problem nor a cultural problem, but it is a

are not uncommon, but it is how companies handle these recalls. Are they ahead of the game? Do
they understand their products, and know what actions need to implement when things go wrong?
Abbott Labs may have to take control of the management of St. Jude Medical. Abbott Labs has 211

how far does Abbott Labs go down in the chain of command. Will they go as far as down as lower

The purpose for the implementation of the carbon was to make polluters of carbon to pay
accordingly to the amount of carbon they release in the atmosphere (Pazzano, 2012). However, it

Abbott abolished the policy after several failed attempts, fulfilling its promise and becoming one of
the best achievements the government has made. According to Griffiths (2014), the removal of the

These doctors were fearful that the "Holy Roman Empire" would take over the northwest section of

Part 2:
Employee Relations: As could have been projected by the public's negative perception, Sister Mary
Theresa's style of leadership was not well received by many employees at Abbott Hospital. Despite
warnings from Dr. John Coletti (Abbott administrator under MEDICO), Sister Mary Theresa
implanted her authoritative managerial style into the new satellite hospital. First, she requested all
Abbott staff members to be interviewed by Mt. Mercy personnel. They were given a three–month
probationary period (at the end of which permanent appointment could be discussed). Also, both
staffs were informed they could be transferred between hospitals at administrative discretion. Sister
Mary Theresa stuck to her bureaucratic plan – causing Dr. John Coletti to resign.
The early results: Revenues from Abbott hospital ran about 15–20 percent below projected levels.
Revenues from surgery/patient care days declined 62 percent. Employee morale was down and the
many regional doctors were beginning to send patients in another direction for hospital care.

Risk Arbitrage: Abbott Labs & Alza
1) How does risk arbitrage work? What are the risks and opportunities associated with this strategy?
Risk arbitrage, or merger and acquisition arbitrage, is one of three types of arbitrage strategies. Two
types of mergers are possible: a cash merger and a stock merger.
Cash Merger Opportunities
Acquirer proposes to purchase the shares of the target for a certain price in cash. Until the
acquisition is completed, the stock of the target usually trades below the purchase price. An
arbitrageur buys the stock of the target and makes a gain if the acquirer ultimately buys the stock.
Stock–for–Stock Merger Opportunities

The number of Abbott shares shorted is then found by multiplying the number of shares of Alza
purchased by the Announced Exchange Ratio of 1.2 ABT:1.0 AZA, which yields 312,000 shares of
Abbott that are to be shorted.
Potential and Expected Returns
The bet's "payoff" is reflected in the spread between the market values of consideration to be
received in the deal (acquirer's stock, cash) minus the market values of securities to be given up
(target's stock).
Gross Spread (Per Share) = Value to be Received in the Transaction – Stock Price of Target = Value
of Abbott Shares to be Received – Price of Alza = (43.50 x 1.2) – 48.00 = $4.20
Gross Spread (Total) = (43.50 x 312,000 shares) – (48.00 x 260,000 shares)
= 13,572,000 – 12,480,000
= $1,092,000
Net Spread = Gross Spread (total) ± All Other Cash Flows from Investment = Gross Spread –
Margin Interest + Short Sale Rebate = 1,092,000 – ((6.2% x 50% x 12,480,000 x (191/365)) + (5.6%
x 13,572,000 x (191/365)) = 1,092,000 – 202,450 + 397,715 = $1,287,265
Potential ROI = Net Spread / Total Capital Employed = 1,287,265 / ((50% x 13,572,000) + (50% x
12,480,000)) = 1,287,265 / 13,026,000 = 10.1%
Annualized Potential ROI = Potential ROI x (365 / Number of Days until Completion) = 10.1% x
(365/191) = 19.3%

multidimensional geometry but it also has a satire within that touches on the social, moral, and
religious values of the time period.
The premise of Flatland's classification comes from the number of sides that person has. Circles are
the highest, being priests. Abbott's character, and pseudonym A Square, is depicted as a middle class
person. There are also equilateral triangles and rectangles. The Flatland is visited by a sphere that A

The Biography Of Grace Abbott
Child labor and poverty are inevitably bound together and if you continue to use the labor of

to the end of time." –Grace Abbott–
Grace Abbott was born on Novemebr 17, 1878 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Lizzie and Othman.
Grace grew up to be a spectacular human being who strived to make a change in this world, and she
did so. Grace was a leading social reformer, who formed the Immigrants Protective League in 1909.
Grace was the perfect candidate for something like this because she fought so hard for several years
to improve and protect the lives of immigrants in the United States, which is what is so empowering
to learn about due to her commitment in the field of Social Work. Grace Abbott didn't stop there
with her plans on changing the world, it wasn't to shortly afterwards that she had moved to
Washington D.C., to be a director of the Childrens Bureau.
Grace Abbott had many influneces in social justice work. I believe that if she didn't make an impact
or was not a historical former social worker she would not be a choice of option when choosing
someone to write a biography on. Not only did Grace Abbott make a huge change in social work,
she strived to make it better each day she lived due to her passionate mindset to change lives.

Balance Sheet
The biggest change in Abbott's balance sheet can be seen in the composition of its asset accounts. In
2006, % of the firm's assets were current, while 69% were of the long–term variety. In 2010,
however, the portion of current assets increased by 7%. This increase in current assets is most
visible in cash and short–term investments (4% in 2006 to 9% in 2010) and corresponds with a
higher level of uncertainty in today's economy. The fact that Abbott Laboratories has chosen to
increase the value of liquid assets on its balance sheet indicates low returns on long–term
investments and a preference of keeping cash on hand rather than reinvesting in the business.
The liabilities section of Abbott's balance sheet does not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The firm's accounts receivable ratio increased from 68.71 in 2006 to 74.56 in 2010. This means that
it is taking Abbott almost six days longer to collect from its customers today than it did five years
ago. Furthermore, the firm's accounts payable days has decreased from 43.72 in 2006 to 38.22 in
2010. This means that Abbott is paying its suppliers 5½ days earlier today than it did in 2006. A
change in the inventory ratio from 8.01 in 2006 to 11.03 in 2010 indicates that it is taking the firm
longer to sell finished goods than it used to. The increase in the accounts receivable and inventory
ratios, combined with a decrease in the accounts payable ratio, indicates poor working capital
management and helps to explain why the firm has increased its holdings of cash and short–term
investments. To correct this, Abbott's managers should focus on collecting cash from its customers
faster and delaying payments to its suppliers. To maximize its cash position, the firm would be best
served by paying its suppliers in the same amount of time as it collects payment from its customers.
Abbott's fixed asset and total asset turnover ratios can tell us how well the firm uses its assets to
generate revenue. The fixed asset ratio provides the proportion of sales to fixed assets and tells us

Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott Essay
"Flatland" is a story of depth, and the lack there of. The tale of A. Square's ventures through
Pointland, Lineland and Spaceland ultimately reveal to him the possibilities of the seemingly
impossible. In this case, the "impossibilities" are the very existence of other dimensions, or worlds.
His guide throughout the journey, a god – like figure who refers to itself as
"Sphere", bestows upon A. Square the greatest gift he could hope for, knowledge. It is only after the
Sphere forcibly takes A. Square out of his dimension, however, that he is able to shrug off his
ignorance and accept the fact that what cannot be, can, and much of what he believed before is

"Flatland" is a book which main purpose is to make the reader think; it raises many questions. Is
there a fourth, fifth, sixth, infinite dimensions? Logically, there should be. Just as there is a
dimension zero, a dimension one, a second and third dimension, should not there also be a fourth?
The Sphere speaks to A. Square of Geometrical Progression 1, 2, 4 and hints that it goes beyond
even that (to 8). But of course, A. Square cannot see that while he is still in his own realm. It is only
after he enters the three dimensional world that he can realize it fully. He then remarks rather
quickly about how there should be something else. He says to the Sphere that "doubtless there is
One above you who combines many Spheres in One Supreme Existence, surpassing even the Solids
of Spaceland" (p. 102). He thinks logically that why should it stop here? There has to be another
more "spacious space" (p.102) somewhere. The Sphere cannot answer the question A. Square so
desperately seeks the answer for, and the reason for this is explained in the foreword by Abbot.
Something that does not exist cannot even be realized. That is where the impossibility lies. People in
Flatland are even incapable of understanding the limitations of that view! The King of Lineland
cannot understand something that his mind will not allow to exist any better than the entity
Pointland can think outside his prison of thought. Another interesting part of the book is the way

Introduction :
In 1949, Sidney Farber, M.D., a pathologist and a clinician formed a theory that folic acid is
required for the growth of cancer cells and methotrexate being a folate antagonist can be used to
counter it. Since then it has been used in dermatology, gynaecology, rheumatology and cancers.
Methotrexate formerly known as amethopterin is an antimetaboliteand dermatologically it is FDA

Texas for seeking to enforce their rights and those of patients for declaratory judgment and
pertaining to the regulation of surgical abortions and abortion–inducing drugs by enjoining two
provisions of the 2013 Texas House Bill No. 2. (Planned Parent Hood v. Abbott, 2014). To many,

In the realm of reproductive rights, having the purpose or effect of placing substantial obstacles in
the path of a woman seeking an abortion of a fetus that is not yet viable is typically deemed
unconstitutional. (Planned Parent Hood v. Abbott, 2014).
II. Rule
To help the court determine the decision for this case, they used several widely–known Supreme
Court decisions to help build the framework for their ruling. The Supreme Court decisions included:
Roe v. Wade (1973), Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), Gonzales v. Carhart (2007) and City of
Akron v. Akron Center for Reproduction (1983). In determining the ruling, the court felt that the
regulations were without a rational basis. Initially, the court was in support of the provision. They
argued that the admitting privileges requirement furthers health and safety in two respects by noting
that the first provision serves as a "quality control mechanism" due to hospitals not wanting to grant
admitting privileges to disreputable or incompetent physicians. (Clerk, 2014). The second argument
was that admitting privileges ensures a continuity of care between the abortion clinic and the
hospital.
The court determined that admitting privileges requirement was not rationally related to a legitimate
state interest. As of October 28, 2013, federal judge Lee Yeakel blocked enforcement of the
admitting privileges requirement ruling that the requirement was

Abbott County Leadership Case Study
However, the leadership at Abbott County has taken a "maintain the status quo" approach,
continuing to simply house their residents as they engage in unproductive recreational activities and
are confined to their cell as punishment for rule violations. As a result, their detention services are
outdated, ineffective, minimally beneficial, and likely detrimental, to the youth and their community.
The management at Abbott County would make great strides toward improving their facility by
adapting and applying the Contingency Theory of Leadership.
C1. Justification
Contingency Theory of Leadership posits that successful leaders must be highly adaptable, adjusting
their leadership style in accordance with both internal and external factors. If leadership insists on
clinging to outdated, ineffectual strategies, failure is virtually imminent. (DuBrin 2013) For
instance, for years, management at Abbott County was either oblivious to or unmoved by the rapid
innovation and advancement that was implemented at facilities around the country. This lack ...

Researching, planning and implementing behavioral modification programs would be a fairly
arduous long–term project that would have to be completed in–between managing the facility's daily
operations. It would be imperative that I and the others involved commit a determined, regularly
scheduled amount of time to the project so that it does not get lost in other business and is
repeatedly delayed. Also, the project would bring a significant amount of added expense to the
facility's finances. Analyzing costs, obtaining the materials and training staff are just a few of the
aspects of the plan that would have an impact on the facility's annual budget. Securing sufficient
funds and applying proper accounting practices are an essential part of effectively managing this

Dr. Abbott And Social Welfare History

  • 1. Dr. Abbott And Social Welfare History Abstract Many pioneers have been influential in advancing the field of social work and one of the early influencers was Edith Abbott. According to the Social Welfare History Project, Abbott was an early social reformer born in 1876 and lived until 1957. Dr. Abbott was known as a "Social Reformer, Author, Administrator and Educator". (Sorenson, "Abbott, Edith – Social Welfare History Project") This paper will explore the background which brought Dr. Abbott to the forefront of the early social work world by speaking about her ethnicity, family background, political affiliation, and reasons why they dedicated their lives to helping others. In addition, this paper will discuss the settings and subfields most associated with the individual, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edith's political affiliation was pro–suffrage for woman and republican. Her family were Quakers, as was her mother, Elizabeth. Elizabeth played a crucial role in women's higher education and also, graduated from Rockford Seminary in 1868 (Women 's Intellectual Contributions, n.d.). Edith's father, Othman, was a soldier, lawyer and banker and perhaps more influentially the first lieutenant governor of the state of Nebraska. Early in Edith's life, her father had financial troubles at his place of work, which caused the family to have to work for years to recoup their hard earned money (Women 's Intellectual Contributions, n.d.). Early in her educational career, Edith's parents enrolled her in Brownell Hall, where Edith graduated from in 1893 with top honors and as valedictorian. Upon graduation, Abbott taught high school in her hometown; this lead her to continue her own education and began taking classes to prepare for college. She went on to attend the University of Nebraska and graduated in 1901 and from there continued her education further by achieving her doctoral degree in economics from the University of Chicago in 1905 (Women 's Intellectual Contributions, n.d.). According to The National Association of Social Workers website, Edith also studied at the London School of Economics. From there, she continued on to teach at Wellesley College until 1908, ... • 2. Abbott Vs. Abbott: Case Study "Ethics is based on well–founded standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do" (article, 1989, revised 2010). In the case of Abbott, he conducted both ethical and legal wrongdoings against Ms. Costello, the owner of a local grocery store. Abbot violated the ethical principle of fairness/justice by stealing meat products under the justification that he was receiving a discount on the produce for bagging his own groceries. Legally, Abbott was liable under the tort of conversion. Abbott's intentions and actions were due to him suffering from vitamin deficiencies and the only way for him to alleviate said deficiencies were from consuming meat products. However, meat "is the most expensive element of groceries, and way beyond Abbott's means". Abbott's desperate situation forced his hand in the case of stealing from Ms. Costello, but the legal and ethical points of the situation were wrong for him to undertake. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Abbott's friends cannot be legally charged for simply suggesting and encouraging him to do so. The test for the tort of conversion falls in line with this situation. There was an intentional interference with Ms. Castello's property, in this case the attempted discount on the meat products. Additionally, there was a refusal to surrender the chattel when the entitled person demanded them to, in this case Abbott was confronted by Ms. Castello and he refused to give up his groceries. To quote, "when challenged, abbot gets both pompous and haughty. Abbott tells Costello it isn't stealing." These events implicate Abbott's tort of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Dan Abbott Research Paper Interview Essay Throughout all of the world's important events there have been people there, experiencing these affairs first hand. There is no better source for information than somebody who has lived through the topic of discussion. That is why no website can compare to talking to somebody who lived through the event. Dan Abbott is one of those people who has lived through some very important events in human history and can talk about it. Dan Abbott is a retired emergency department doctor who has served in the military in the cold war. He was an officer and flew in a patrol helicopter along the border of East and West Germany. He got out of the draft for many years because he was going to college and medical school but after he graduated he was forced to go to Germany and defend against the Communists. This interview taught me a lot about my grandads life, gave me a lot of perspective on how the war in Germany affected him and also how it is important to talk about our pasts. To begin, the interview with Dan Abbott really gave me a lot of information about what he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Abbott really put the importance of talking about our pasts into perspective. To begin the interview was chalk full of historical facts. But not only was it full of facts but it also made something that would be boring to learn in a textbook, fun and personal. According to Brain World Magazine this is a much better way to learn,"The stronger the emotions connected to an experience, the stronger the subsequent memory." Talking to people who lived through events gives information on a more personal level making it easier to retain. In this case, the interview process was very easy and did not take as much effort as reading a long article and gave way more information than any other article did. However one downside to this process is that sometime people misremember events. Overall, interviewing Dr. Abbott really showed how important it is to talk to people who came ... • 4. Brief Biography of Berenice Abbott "Photography can never grow up if it imitates some other medium. It has to walk alone; it has to be itself." – Berenice Abbott. An American photographer best known for black and white photography of New York, Berenice Abbott believed a photograph are special and unique. It cannot be copied or mimic others. A photograph will represent the historical picture of the past. The historical past or memories of the photograph usually have a very meaningful and emotional story behind it. A photograph has its own significant meaning, which communicates through the details of the photo. The photograph on the left that I have found is Migrant Mother, taken by Dorothea Lange in 1936. In 1935, Lange and her husband, Paul Taylor, was transfer to the Resettlement Administrations, one of Roosevelt's New Deal programs designed to help the country recovers from depression. She began working as a photographer and took snapshots of events that happened after the depression. The caption for this piece of photograph is title as Migrant Mother, which will give away a hint of what the photograph is about. People would start to have an assumption that it is a woman who is migrating to another place with her children. What kinds of assumption would you make by observing the photograph of a mother and two lovely sons with their face turn away? In most cases, when people first look at this photograph, they will interpret that they are poor. However, they will not know the true meaning behind ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Comparing Who Is On First By Abbott And Costello There are three types of baseball player; those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happens (Tommy Lasorda). In the story who is on first Lou Costello the guy who is trying to understand who the players names are, would be one of those guys who wonder what in the world is happening. In Who Is on First, by Abbott and Costello they use high comedy. This is because they use questions for the names that makes it sound like the guy who answers does not know what is happening. Because Mr. Abbott has players that have weird names, Mr. Costello would ask "who is on first?" Abbott would answers "Who" which makes it sound like Abbott wants to figure out who is on the team. • 7. Abbott Point Australia Case Study How will the building of the world's largest Coal Export Terminal at Abbott point effect Australia and it's world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef? Introduction: Recently the Environmental minister for Australia, Greg Hunt, fast tracked plans that would mean the sea bed at Abbott point will be dredged with construction reaching the Caley Valley Wetlands, because of this these plans are possible for commencement any time after January 2015. The final decision on this was made regardless of public consultation legalities, primarily due to the plummeting value of coal and un–confirmed economic benefits of financing the mines and port. With the only certified benefit of coal mining in Australia being increased job opportunities for the industry, as according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the Australian coal mining industry employs 54,900 people full time throughout the country and more than 145,000 people in related employment, this is a 247% increase since recorded 10 years ago. Since this decision a staggering 504,998 signatures collectively between savethereef.org and fightforthereef.org have protested the plans to dredge Abbott Point, a number that would significantly impact the final decision if public consultation protocol was followed by the Australian Government. • 8. Who Is Abbott Suger? In this introduction to a larger text, Erwin Panofsky aims to explain why Abbott Suger was so much better at recording his involvement in the reconstruction of St Denis his fellow contemporaneous patrons. He argues that two main motivations for Suger's extensive writings were self justification and vanity. While supporting these two points, Panofsky also used this introduction to introduce readers to Suger's life and work to give a well rounded image of the man. In order to fully address Suger's writing and the motivation behind it, Panofsky needed to provide context on who Suger was and how he interacting with his peers and rivals. Panofsky touches on his early life, political influence and his preferred approaches to political issues, his business savvy, and his relationship with his contemporaries like St. Bernard and the monks under his influence. It is through the analysis of these aspects that we can see where the need for self justification and a focus on vanity that we see in Suger's writings emerged in his life. To support his thesis, Panofsky looked at the writings of Suger, individuals he corresponded ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While very organized in terms of flow, Panofsky failed to give indication of where he was directly talking about his thesis and where he was providing a foundation of knowledge on the subject. While sections were separated and indicated by capitalization at the start of a new introductory paragraph, subheadings would have made this collection of topics easier to navigate. On a personal level, I was not a huge fan of the writing style itself. I found it to be long winded with too many semi–colons utilized throughout. However, this is simply a personal preference on style and doesn't reflect my view of Panofsky's success from a scholarship standpoint. • 10. Price Gouging In The United States The idea of price gouging can have many different perspectives on it, and is very controversial. Price gouging is when a seller spikes their prices of goods, services, or other purchase products to a level higher than reasonable. Ethically, I do agree with the fact that merchants shouldn't sky rocket their product prices during a state of emergency–price gouging. Illegally, price gouging is continuing to affect our labor market and offset the cost of living in many states. Price gouging is continuing to affect the health of many people due to pharmaceutical companies and their major increases in price. Lastly, price gouging just is unjust, immoral, and against the law in states. While there are no federal regulations to price gouging and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Price gouging occurs when a merchant drastically raises their prices on daily necessities. When setting cities living wage and cost of living, the cost of daily necessities plays a role. Cost of living is the amount of money needed to sustain a certain level of living, including basic expenses such as housing, food, taxes and health care. A book called The fundamentals of minimum wage fixing by Francois Eyraud and Catherine Saget talks brief about cost of living and how it is incorporated into minimum wage. The authors gave different ways on how the cost of living is determined. According to the two, they shared that the cost of living is determined by the price of goods (standard necessities to live), and wage statistics submitted by the United States Department of Labor (Eyraud, Saget, 2005). Both living wage and cost of living differentiates by state and cities. Cost of living effects how the government set the nations minimum wage. When merchants continuously raise prices of daily necessities and they are unreasonable, it can affect the cost of living. To prevent this trickle down effect, the United States government should create federal regulations on price gouging to prevent an increase in cost of living which then leads to an increase in minimum wage, which then leads to possible jobs ... • 17. Billy Abbott And Lou Costello There may not be a more well–known comedy routine in the American consciousness than that of "Who's on First?" by Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. The routine has been parodied, satirized and imitated by countless TV shows, movies, and theatre productions, and the joke has become almost a cultural shorthand for confusing situations. Because "Who's on first?" has become such a large part of popular culture, many writers, directors and producers make allusions to the sketch freely. However, as the producers of one Broadway show discovered, when allusions become direct reproductions, there may be legal liability for copyright infringement. "Hand to God" Faces Lawsuit The playwright, producer and promoter of the Broadway play "Hand to God" were served with a lawsuit alleging that production infringed on Abbott & Costello's copyright to the "Who's on First?" routine. The play, which has been nominated for several Tony awards, features a scene where the lead character, a teenage boy, attempts to impress a girl by performing part of the sketch with a sock puppet. The girl does not understand the reference, and boy initially tries to claim credit before eventually admitting that it was a famous routine from the 1950s. The book has been very popular since its original publishing. It has been reprinted at least 6 times with the most recent coming from Princeton University Press in 1991. Flatland is about the adventure of A Square in Lineland and Spaceland. Abbott attempts to make popular the idea of multidimensional geometry but it also has a satire within that touches on the social, moral, and religious values of the time period. The premise of Flatland's classification comes from the number of sides that person has. Circles are the highest, being priests. Abbott's character, and pseudonym A Square, is depicted as a middle class person. There are also equilateral triangles and rectangles. The Flatland is visited by a sphere that A Squares sees and gets him thinking about the possibilities of other dimensions of living. • 35. Abbott Labs Financial Analysis Balance Sheet The biggest change in Abbott's balance sheet can be seen in the composition of its asset accounts. In 2006, % of the firm's assets were current, while 69% were of the long–term variety. In 2010, however, the portion of current assets increased by 7%. This increase in current assets is most visible in cash and short–term investments (4% in 2006 to 9% in 2010) and corresponds with a higher level of uncertainty in today's economy. The fact that Abbott Laboratories has chosen to increase the value of liquid assets on its balance sheet indicates low returns on long–term investments and a preference of keeping cash on hand rather than reinvesting in the business. The liabilities section of Abbott's balance sheet does not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The firm's accounts receivable ratio increased from 68.71 in 2006 to 74.56 in 2010. This means that it is taking Abbott almost six days longer to collect from its customers today than it did five years ago. Furthermore, the firm's accounts payable days has decreased from 43.72 in 2006 to 38.22 in 2010. This means that Abbott is paying its suppliers 5½ days earlier today than it did in 2006. A change in the inventory ratio from 8.01 in 2006 to 11.03 in 2010 indicates that it is taking the firm longer to sell finished goods than it used to. The increase in the accounts receivable and inventory ratios, combined with a decrease in the accounts payable ratio, indicates poor working capital management and helps to explain why the firm has increased its holdings of cash and short–term investments. To correct this, Abbott's managers should focus on collecting cash from its customers faster and delaying payments to its suppliers. To maximize its cash position, the firm would be best served by paying its suppliers in the same amount of time as it collects payment from its customers. Abbott's fixed asset and total asset turnover ratios can tell us how well the firm uses its assets to generate revenue. The fixed asset ratio provides the proportion of sales to fixed assets and tells us how much revenue is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Flatland by Edwin A. Abbott Essay "Flatland" is a story of depth, and the lack there of. The tale of A. Square's ventures through Pointland, Lineland and Spaceland ultimately reveal to him the possibilities of the seemingly impossible. In this case, the "impossibilities" are the very existence of other dimensions, or worlds. His guide throughout the journey, a god – like figure who refers to itself as "Sphere", bestows upon A. Square the greatest gift he could hope for, knowledge. It is only after the Sphere forcibly takes A. Square out of his dimension, however, that he is able to shrug off his ignorance and accept the fact that what cannot be, can, and much of what he believed before is wrong. When he sees first hand that a square can have depth simply by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Flatland" is a book which main purpose is to make the reader think; it raises many questions. Is there a fourth, fifth, sixth, infinite dimensions? Logically, there should be. Just as there is a dimension zero, a dimension one, a second and third dimension, should not there also be a fourth? The Sphere speaks to A. Square of Geometrical Progression 1, 2, 4 and hints that it goes beyond even that (to 8). But of course, A. Square cannot see that while he is still in his own realm. It is only after he enters the three dimensional world that he can realize it fully. He then remarks rather quickly about how there should be something else. He says to the Sphere that "doubtless there is One above you who combines many Spheres in One Supreme Existence, surpassing even the Solids of Spaceland" (p. 102). He thinks logically that why should it stop here? There has to be another more "spacious space" (p.102) somewhere. The Sphere cannot answer the question A. Square so desperately seeks the answer for, and the reason for this is explained in the foreword by Abbot. Something that does not exist cannot even be realized. That is where the impossibility lies. People in Flatland are even incapable of understanding the limitations of that view! The King of Lineland cannot understand something that his mind will not allow to exist any better than the entity Pointland can think outside his prison of thought. Another interesting part of the book is the way women are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the realm of reproductive rights, having the purpose or effect of placing substantial obstacles in the path of a woman seeking an abortion of a fetus that is not yet viable is typically deemed unconstitutional. (Planned Parent Hood v. Abbott, 2014). II. Rule To help the court determine the decision for this case, they used several widely–known Supreme Court decisions to help build the framework for their ruling. The Supreme Court decisions included: Roe v. Wade (1973), Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), Gonzales v. Carhart (2007) and City of Akron v. Akron Center for Reproduction (1983). In determining the ruling, the court felt that the regulations were without a rational basis. Initially, the court was in support of the provision. They argued that the admitting privileges requirement furthers health and safety in two respects by noting that the first provision serves as a "quality control mechanism" due to hospitals not wanting to grant admitting privileges to disreputable or incompetent physicians. (Clerk, 2014). The second argument was that admitting privileges ensures a continuity of care between the abortion clinic and the hospital. The court determined that admitting privileges requirement was not rationally related to a legitimate state interest. As of October 28, 2013, federal judge Lee Yeakel blocked enforcement of the admitting privileges requirement ruling that the requirement was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Abbott County Leadership Case Study However, the leadership at Abbott County has taken a "maintain the status quo" approach, continuing to simply house their residents as they engage in unproductive recreational activities and are confined to their cell as punishment for rule violations. As a result, their detention services are outdated, ineffective, minimally beneficial, and likely detrimental, to the youth and their community. The management at Abbott County would make great strides toward improving their facility by adapting and applying the Contingency Theory of Leadership. C1. Justification Contingency Theory of Leadership posits that successful leaders must be highly adaptable, adjusting their leadership style in accordance with both internal and external factors. If leadership insists on clinging to outdated, ineffectual strategies, failure is virtually imminent.
