Genetically Modified Foods Someone out there has probably wondered why their tomatoes which
they bought at a supermarket, taste different than the tomatoes at a farmers market. Well to answer
that curious person, the tomatoes from the supermarket are most likely Genetically Modified.
Genetically Modified foods (GM foods) are organisms in which genetic material (DNA) have been
altered in a way that is not natural. Basically they are inserting genes of another species into their
DNA, the process is known as biotechnology. 45 percent of corn and 85 percent of soybean are

to what they want to consume into their own body. Wuyang Hu, Michele Veeman, Wiktor
Adamowicz and Ge Geo did a research on "Consumers' Food Choices with Voluntary Access to
Genetic Information" one of the things they discorvered is that "despite recognition of the
importance of information to consumers' choice of products, whether and to what extent individual
consumers will seek product information and the effect of this search behavior on product choices
are not features that are well understood and there are relatively few studies of this issue"
(Hu,Veeman,Adamowiz and Gao 586). They did a computer based survey that was a component of a
larger study of Canadian consumers' altitudes and purchasing intentions for Genetically Modified

In "Consumers Call on FDA to Label GE Foods" Colin O'Neil feels that not labeling GMOs
infringes on an American citizens freedom. Colin O' Neil argued that "one choice Americans are not
free to make is whether their food contains genetically engineered ingredients" based on the fact that
the FDA is not required to label GMOs (O'Neil 31). Back in 1992 "the FDA issued a policy
statement that GE foods were not 'materially' different from non–GE foods and thus did not need to
be labeled"(O'Neil 31); Colin O'Neil rebutted "We as consumers no longer base our decisions solely
on what we can see or taste or smell, so why should the FDA continue to do so?" (O'Neil 32) The
FDA believed that GE foods were the exact same as non–GE foods and did not need any labels
because the consumer could not tell the difference. O'Neil wanted to change the FDA's stance on
labeling because "90 percent of Americans want GE foods to be labeled and consumers do not

Genetically modified organism (GMO) is a GM food or genetically engineered foods, are foods
produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of
genetic engineering as opposed to traditional cross breeding. With the discovery of DNA in the early
1900s and various advancement in genetic techniques through the 1970s it became possible to
directly alter the DNA and genes within food. The first genetically modified plant was produced in
1983, using an antibiotic–resistant tobacco plant. Genetically modified microbial enzymes were the
first application of genetically modified organisms in food production and were approved in 1988 by
the US Food and Drug Administration. The first genetically modified food approved for release was
the Flavr Savr tomato in 1994. Developed by Calgene, it was engineered to have a longer shelf life
by inserting an antisense gene that delayed ripening. China was the first country to commercialize a
transgenic crop in 1993 with introduction of virus– resistant tobacco. In 1995, Bacillus thuringiensis
(Bt) Potato was approved for cultivation, making it the first pesticide producing crop to be approved
in the USA. With the creation of golden rice in 2000, scientists had genetically modified food to

Globalization has brought so much change in the way we live our lives, how countries conduct their
business, communication, travel and many others aspects of life. Despite all these benefits there
have been some disadvantages that have come along due to globalization such as the spread of
infectious diseases and viruses, which can become a threat to public health. I think it would be not

The costs of GE seeds are too high for farmers from developing countries to implement their usage.
The costs of implementing this technology will not be offset by the benefits that farmers in the US
have received. Not only will farmers lose money, but unemployment, which is already a problem in
many developing nations, will increase, as farmers need to hire less labor to produce the same
amount of crops.

A genetically modified organism, GMO, has been altered by genetic engineering techniques. GMOs
are widely used by scientists in many different ways to include the production of food and in
research.8 Zebrafish genetically modified to be a fluorescent bright red, green and orange have been
available for purchase as pets in 49 states in the United States since 2003.8 However, these patented
GloFish are banned in California. The California Fish and Game Commission decided the fish were
the result of a "trivial use for a powerful technology."7 The Commission's belief that the fish should
not have been created led to a law making the GloFish illegal. Originally GloFish were developed
by scientists in Singapore to be living pollution sensors as they would only glow when in the
presence of pollutants.7 The Commission's ban on GloFish highlights the controversy over
genetically modified organisms and how public opinion can be swayed by the beliefs of others

many advantages make life easier but also include drawbacks. The technology to solve many
problems exists, but our ability to create a solution does not necessarily mean we should. Most
problems of these problems can be fixed, but what is the cost? World hunger is an issue that many
people wish they could solve. It seemed impossible in the past, but modern technology has provided
a possible solution. Given the chance, would you put an end to hunger in this world? Most people
would answer yes but still wonder how this is possible. Genetically–modified organisms (GMO)
may be a viable option. These foods are bigger and quickly produced. They have a higher resistance
to insect attacks and can grow in desolate terrains. They appear to be the solution to one of society's
biggest problems, but the side effects are huge. These poorly understood "frankenfoods" cause
numerous symptoms, but they are still sold to the public. While GMOs appear beneficial, they have
ill effects and must be regulated. Native American tribes started selectively breeding maize more
than 10,000 years ago. Certain seeds were easier to grind, tasted better, and produced bigger plants.
Ancient farmers planted the more desirable seeds for the next year's harvest. The versatile seeds

I write this paper from the viewpoint of Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, president of Zambia. I was
elected as the third Republican president in January of 2002, right at the height of the food crisis
(Ingham, 29914). As the nation's president, it is my responsibility to make decisions that will best
serve today's population, and provocate success for the generations to come. Equally weighing both
of these responsibilities led to my decision to refuse the US donations in the form of genetically
modified crops. I realize the severity of the situation which plagues my people, but I cannot leave
the extended welfare of my country to chance. My decision to refuse aid in the form of genetically
modified food stems from the unknown health effects, probable environmental impact and possible
trade disruption associated with GMOs. The fact of the matter is, we just don't know the long–term
health effects caused by consuming genetically modified organisms. GMOs were only recently
invented in 1994 (James, Krattiger, 1996) and testing on their health effects began as recently as
1996 (Smith, 2015). Over the last 20, years numerous tests have been performed to investigate
whether or not it is safe to eat genetically modified foods; but 20 years is simply not enough time to

As a carrier of disease, air transportation poses a serious threat to global health. Government
regulations and air transportation industry practices attempt to control or at least limit the
opportunities for spreading infectious disease by monitoring aircraft and performing routine

Gmo Research Paper Genetically Modified Foods Someone out there has probably wondered why their tomatoes which they bought at a supermarket, taste different than the tomatoes at a farmers market. Well to answer that curious person, the tomatoes from the supermarket are most likely Genetically Modified. Genetically Modified foods (GM foods) are organisms in which genetic material (DNA) have been altered in a way that is not natural. Basically they are inserting genes of another species into their DNA, the process is known as biotechnology. 45 percent of corn and 85 percent of soybean are genetically modified. I was elected as the third Republican president in January of 2002, right at the height of the food crisis (Ingham, 29914). As the nation's president, it is my responsibility to make decisions that will best serve today's population, and provocate success for the generations to come. Equally weighing both of these responsibilities led to my decision to refuse the US donations in the form of genetically modified crops. I realize the severity of the situation which plagues my people, but I cannot leave the extended welfare of my country to chance.
