3. Introduction
To design a CAD for “Low cost drop test impact test setup” for
composite materials. The following software used for the design
“Dassault Systemes Solidworks”. The assemblies are being precisely
calculated and analyzed to give us an exact replica of our model.hat has
been manufactured for the following setup that we will be using for the
impact test of the composite material.The measurements are being
taken by the help of vernier caliper, measuring tape and also the angles
between two L brackets or hollow pipes using compass. Moreover the
design of the model gives us an idea of the importance of analysizing
the impact of a the indenter on a material.
5. Various Parts
1. Base: The following parts of
the model has been done from
clean slate. Starting with the
sand box at the bottom of the
whole model which consist of a
rectangular framework with
reinforcement with sheets
helping for the dispersion of
loads by the sand.
A cuboidal base of dimension 100*50 cm and of
thickness 0.3 cm is designed and is manufactured using
mild steel sheets. The cuboidal base is used to serve as
a solid foundation for the whole setup of height 230.5
6. 2. Framework: The following
structure is the model which is
backbone of the whole model that
supports the base as well as the
Indenter that will strike the
composite model. The structure
needs to be stable,rigid and less
bulky.
7. 3. Base Plane:The base plane is a
support for the composite
material to support as well as
also supports the design
rigidity.Also its the part where
the force of the impact will cause
high pressure zones around the
periphery of impact on the
composite material.
To hold the workpiece in place a 0.2 cm hollow
workpiece holder is designed of dimension 5*2.5
cm and is manufactured.
8. 4. Guided Column: The design is
the Guided column for the Holding
mechanism with the Indenter fit to
travel through, sliding bearing is
used for this purpose of helping
the tool travel smoothly.
A frame consisting of solid pipes each of
dimeter 2.43 cm and height of 145.5 cm is
designed and manufactured of iron.
9. 5. Holding Mechanism: This
Holding mechanism is the design
which supports the Indenter and
to slide it through the Guided
columns, also its a general
standard tool so we can change
the heads of the Indenter.
The tool holder is attached to the frame by a hook of
dimension 3.5*0.25 cm and the hook is made of cast
iron
10. 6. Indenter: This is the Indenter
which is used to impact the surface
of the composite material and also
the head and the density and
weight can be changed according
to the requirements.
A stepped solid pipe of diameter 1.95cm and 1.6 cm
and a total length of 47.205 cm is designed with a
semi sperical end having diameter of 1.95 cm and is
manufactured using cast iron.
11. Application
To analyse stress concentration on a composite material due to impact
of free falling weight under gravitational force.
12. Objective
The main objective of this design of the model is to analyze and learn
the utility of the composites as well as the devastating effect of any
ballistic or direct impact of any small particles on a high speed
aerodynamic design that may indent the surface or even rupture a
small part inside the strands of the composites that is impossible to
see under the human eye but can lead to a larger stress in time the
whole design might fail and a massacre may happen.
