How It Will End By Duhamel Summary
Relationships, Comparisons, Assumptions, and What Lies Beneath As time passes in a relationship,
it is inevitable that confrontations are bound to occur. Whether small disagreements created from
minor issues, to mediocre arguments based on daily matters, to serious incidents that can reflect
relationship taboos, it is a couple's perception and understanding of each other that can strengthen or
weaken their union. The poem "How It Will End" by Denise Duhamel portrays two couples
involved in similar matters as those previously described. One couple is having, what appears to be,
an argument at the beach and the second couple is watching them from afar, as they're on a
boardwalk. As the poem progresses, the second couple's assumptions of what ... Show more content

In Duhamel's poem, this is clearly represented. One couple appears to be far from having a "happy
day at the beach;" they're arguing, the female's body language reveals a need for acceptance,
distance, and rejection. The second couple's belief of what is stirring and their relationship
comparison based on these thoughts, solidifies the underlying truth that marriage is not easy. Lines
20 to 21: "I start to coach the girl to leave her no–good lifeguard, but my husband predicts he'll
never leave," are depicting the couple's mirroring on what they would actually do in this situation.
The relationship judgement concept continues in lines 23 through 25 with "That's your problem–you
think every fight is funny. You never take her seriously," and he says, "You never even give a guy a
chance and you're always nagging" where a compromise issue is portrayed this time, obviously on
both couples. Relationships require you to extend yourself for the sake of the other, that is
collectively understanding each other's needs, accept mistakes, and practice forgiveness. Should
relationships be compared to others? Is the concept of assumption safe for a union? Is proof
necessary for a couple to be happy? Nothing good ever comes of comparing your relationship to
someone else's. It is better to acknowledge that each bond is unique and has its strengths and
weaknesses. One of the most important reasons not to compare relationships is that you're not seeing
the full picture. Furthermore, in the last two lines of the poem: "She has her arms around his neck
and is crying into his shoulder, He whisks her up into his hut. We look around, but no one is
watching us" it confirms that the second couple has issues lying deep beneath their own. Once you
begin comparing relationships, you'll probably start focusing on the

Introduction
The comparison between these two devices can become a passionate one as users each have their
preferences which essentially is what means more to them. To compare the Apple iPhone 6 Plus and
the Galaxy Note 4 is not a simple comparison as they are essentially two different types of phones.
However in this guide we will attempt to compare and contrast the differences between the two
devices giving an unbiased view of what their functions are and their capabilities.
Comparing the Features
1. Typing (Keyboard)
The keyboard on the Apple iPhone Plus has integrated third party keyboard that comes with
SwiftKey that is similar to Note 4's keyboard. However the one on the Apple device does not offer
secondary keys when doing a long press and it does not auto insert words for you. The Note 4's
keyboard has all of those features and is fully customizable.
2. Size
The sizes of the two devices are almost comparable as the sizes are very close. The iPhone 6 Plus
measures in at 6.22" x 3.06" x 0.28" while the Note 4's measurement is 6.04" x 3.09" x
0.33".Therefore they both will be in the same category of smart phones as the sizes are

Comparison/Contrast Essay
The Chimney Sweepers (Songs of Innocence/Songs of Experience) are both poems about young

Songs of Innocence starts with a very dark tone, but in the beginning of the fourth stanza there is a
tone change from dark to rescue/religion.
In Songs of Innocence the narrator begins to explain a dream that another chimney sweep had. Tom

What I Learned From Taking American Civilization 1700
At the beginning of the semester I wrote an assignment addressing what I wanted to learn from
taking American Civilization 1700. I went through the course syllabus and I chose skills that I
thought were important for me to know better as well as important to my future career as a teacher.
Two skills that I did not list that I wanted to work on were comparing and contrasting. Comparing
and contrasting are two skills that I thought I was quite good at and had no problems with. When it
came to do the Written Assignment #2 Compare and Contrast Essay, I found out that I was mistaken
in my assumption. I struggled and had to obtain help from the professor on what there was to
compare and contrast between the two documents the essay was about. After the professor helped
and guided me, I was able to learn how to properly compare the similarities and contrast the
differences between two different documents. I chose to post my first written assignment as my
signature assignment on my personal eportfolio because I am proud of how it turned out and I feel it
was the assignment I learned the most from. I didn't just learn to compare and contrast, I learned to
interpret old documentation and references, I learned that the same time frame in history, for
example, the immigration period that the assignment covered, can have two very different
perspectives. The paper I wrote had both strength and weaknesses. The strengths were, I did a good
job at finding thing to compare and contrast, but

Compare the Methods Used to Distribute Two Selected...
Compare the methods used to distribute two selected products and services
In this report I will be comparing methods used by two different retailers on how they distribute two
chosen products, of my choice, in two different retailing sectors. Seeing as the food and clothing
sector both have very different styles of how they meet their product requirements, I will compare
Tesco and JD; The products from these two companies itself that I'm going to compare is 'Tesco
Value Bread' and Nike hoodies.
For the food retailing sector (Tesco) there are many different departments that address what type of
design is necessary for the distribution chain, the types that are available for a company such as
Tesco is: frozen, chilled, and fresh foods, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are more outgoing costs in the production process for the Nike hoodies than the 'Tesco Value
Bread' as the clothing's going to more places, and costs a considerable amount more to make than
the bread.
The warehousing locations used to hold the goods (the food and the clothing) may be identical in
size but the number of locations is most likely different. Because of the fact that the Nike hoodies
are bigger in size compared to the 'Tesco Value Bread' one may be lead to believe that Nike have
purchased/hired out a lot more warehouses to contain their goods compared to Tesco. On the other
hand, even though Nike may seem to have more warehouses than Tesco it doesn't necessarily mean
that they sell more, as there are different levels of demand for both the products.
Nike promote their hoodies through a lot of ways; Nike use mainly advertisements through the web,
television and advertisements through shops–most of the time their own shops. They mass promote
their Nike hoodies, whether they're new releases or just old hoodies that need to go. Through
companies like JD that sell Nike hoodies most of the time they put the hoodies on sell to promote
the product further and make it more appealing to the customers that may want to purchase it. Tesco,
to some extent, do in fact the same thing in regards to reduced cost methods but it isn't even close to
comparable when looking

Alone Maya Angelou Analysis
It is safe to say that society today has evolved to value consumer goods over minimalistic properties
and social values such as human interaction. Although a lot of good things have come from mass
consumer products, many people believe it has had a harmful effect on our society. Maya Angelou
was an American author, a poet, and a playwright. In 1978 she published the poem "Alone", where
the speaker embraces the problem she notices in her society. One can assume that Maya's lyrical
poem, expresses her own feelings regarding loneliness. Her poem highlights how wealth is not a
cure for solidarity. In the poem Alone, Maya Angelou utilizes literary devices to emphasize the
negative effects of a materialistic society and the importance of having the right amount of people in
your life.
Through her use of comparisons, Maya establishes the central theme regarding the detrimental
effects of a materialistic society. For example, the speaker uses a simile to compare wealthy wives to
banshees. "There are some millionaires/ With money they can't use/Their wives run round like
banshees/Their children sing the blues." Maya is comparing the wives of the rich men to insane
spiritual woman. She is using this comparison to emphasize how even though these women are
wealthy, they lack the humanitarian connection to other people, and consequently, they are not
happy. Additionally, Maya uses a metaphor to compare the hearts of the wealthy men to stone.
"They've got expensive doctors/ To cure their hearts of stone." Maya uses this comparison to
emphasize how depressed and withdrawn these people are. Furthermore, as Maya speaks of the
millionaires and the money they "can not spend", she is stressing the idea that money cannot buy
happiness, and that although they may seem like they have everything, their riches do not cure their
loneliness.
Additionally, Maya incorporates repetition to provide a sense of rhythm. "Alone, all alone/ Nobody,
but nobody/ Can make it out here alone." She repeats these phrases multiple times throughout the
poem, giving each verse an ending rhythm. Although Maya's lyrical poem does not follow a specific
rhyme scheme or structure, the rhythm allows the poem to flow. Not only does repetition provide
rhythm, but

AN ANALYSIS OF "THE MEN WE CARRY IN OUR MINDS"
In the essay, "The Men We Carry in Our Minds", Scott Russell Sanders discusses his perspective on
men in comparison to the impression that women carry in their minds. Sanders uses a unique way of
writing through narration and life experiences to truly illustrate his point that the impressions of men
or women are based on ones own life experiences. As a young boy knowing only of the hardships of
workingmen, Sanders later experiences drastic social differences when he receives a scholarship to
attend a university "meant for the children of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Using the color's Black and White, Sanders clearly emphasizes the comparison between both
completely different social classes. Sanders also states his topic sentence last to support and
conclude his comparative narration at the beginning. This ties his narration into his climatic and
summarizing point that show the difference between "the twin poles" of his early vision of
manhood. These are the main ideas of his essay to depict the "brute toiling animal and the boss",
which are then mention and described later in the essay. It is an effective way to begin because it
directly states the scope of his thesis and previews the upcoming sections to come.
As Sanders later develops his image of a hardworking man being either a "warrior" or "toiler", he
bridges the gap between the poor and the rich by mentioning his scholarship to college. "A
scholarship enabled me not only to attend college, a rare enough feat in my circle, but even to study
in a university meant for the children of the rich"(para. 7). This transition also enables him to talk
about the hardships that the women experienced in comparison to the men. "And for the first time I
met women who told me that men were guilty of having kept all the joys and privileges of the earth
for themselves" (para. 7).
Near the beginning of the essay, Sanders focused

Leon Festinger's Social Comparison Theory
Social comparison theory was proposed by Leon Festinger his theory said that people have a desire
to compare themselves to others and from the comparison they make many judgements about
themselves. He said there are two types of social comparison one of which is upward this is when
we compare ourselves with people we believe are better than us and downward is when we compare
ourselves to people that are worse off to make us feel good. This links to Laura because she had a
desire to lose weight because she was the only girl in the class which made her feel self–conscious

Comparison And Contrast In Research Paper
Comparison and contrast is when you compare two alternatives in order to decide which one is
better by finding the differences or similarities between them. In comparison you will find the
differences between two or more things, and in contrast you will find the similarities.
Depending on what type of paper you are writing, many times the subject will be chosen for you.
However, in other situations you have to choose your own; when choosing the subjects keep in mind
that they need to have obvious differences or similarities.
A comparison and contrast essay can be structured in three ways: subject–by–subject, that is good
for short essays; separating the subjects in different paragraphs, for example: write the subject A in
one or two paragraphs and subject B in the next paragraphs. ... Show more content on

Subject A point 2, subject B, point 2 and so on. This type is good for long essays and also make it
easier for the reader to follow.
And the third way is the mixed sequence that includes both ways, subject–by–subject and point–by–
point, is good for a diversity on your paper.
When writing a comparison you will be constructing an analogy, which means using an unusual
subject related to something more usual to better help the reader understand the subject. There is two
common forms in analogy: metaphor, which is a figure of speech where one thing is compared to an
object or action but no literally, is just a way so the reader can better comprehend, and simile that
differs from metaphor because of the use of the words ''like'' or ''as'' when comparing, for example:
my internet today is slow like a snail.

How the Advertiser Presents the Product to the Consumer and Comparing the Adverts in Mercedes–
Benz and Chrysler Voyagers Ads
I have chosen to compare two adverts on cars. They are for a Mercedes–Benz and a Chrysler
Voyager. I will be looking at all aspects of my chosen adverts and comparing them to each other.
The advert for the Mercedes–Benz is very personal, and is constantly putting the reader in the
driver's seat. It is laid out like a cinema screen, and that comparison continues throughout the advert.
The picture is very passive and immediately places the reader at the centre of the advert, and the
whole layout is calming. In comparison, in the Chrysler Voyager advert the attention of the ... Show

It then reinforces that message by saying 'I sat back in my seat and watched the world outside'. It
gives the feeling that the reader is in the car. It also reinforces the feeling of a cinema screen by
saying 'watched the world outside unfold upon the screen as if it were a silent movie'. This makes
the reader feel important, and detached from the outside of the car. This is the feeling that the writers
want to convey, as it presents a positive picture of what being in the car would feel like. This image
that has been presented, of the reader in the driver's seat, is backed up by the picture of the view,
through the windscreen, from the driver's point of view. The language used in the top section is very
flowing, as the ride in the car would be, and it has been made smoother by use of alliteration such as
'watched the world', and 'unfold upon'.
The bottom section of text starts by saying 'Picture the scene'. This immediately makes the reader
think of a scene in a movie, and then it backs that up by saying 'set against the evenings pale and
chaotic backdrop'. It also makes the reader the most important person in this scene by saying that
everything is pale and boring, and chaotic in comparison to the Mercedes and its owner. The text
then goes on to make the car seem more that just a machine by using a

Mary Oliver Rhetorical Analysis Essay
The excerpt from Mary Oliver's "Building the House" serves as a way to describe what happens
during the poetry writing process. Although Mary Oliver believes that writing poetry is hard work,
she uses extended metaphor, juxtaposition, and point of view to describe the writing process in
comparison of building a house, which shows that Oliver sees poetry as something that involves
mental labor which is a different challenge than physical labor . Through the use of extended
metaphor, Mary Oliver is allowed to express both the mentality and physicality when writing a
poem, which is able to show the differences and similarities by comparison. The extended metaphor

Poem Comparison
The Difference in Similarity
"Lady Lazarus," by Sylvia Plath and " "The Waking" by Theodore Roethke are two poems that
relate directly to the speaker. Although both poems share this similarity, the way in which both
works or literature are constructed are vastly different. Plath uses visual imagery and poetical tercets
to show the pain and suffering of the speaker in her poem, while Roethke uses the musical Villanelle
and synesthesia to create his picture of the speaker's inner thoughts and a sense of awakening.
When reading the poem "Lady Lazarus" for the first time, the subject matter can be a little difficult
to comprehend. The title of this poem and the speaker share the same name, ultimately making
connections to the poet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A tercet is a three–line stanza. These stanzas are mostly made up of short, choppy lines with a mix
of enjambment and end stop lines that can been seen as an example in lines 22–24 when the speaker
says: "[This] is Number Three. (end stop)/ What a Trash (enjambment)/To annihilate each decade.
(end stop). When read aloud, the words move quickly and forcefully. It almost sounds like the
speaker is spitting her words out to the reader in disgust. This could relate to her overall feelings of
disgust throughout the poem. This poem also has use of perfect rhyme and slant rhyme. One
instance of perfect rhyme happens in lines 83–84, where the words hair and air rhyme. An example
of slant rhyme occurs in lines 71–72, where the words burn and concern sound rhythmical. Also,
there is use in anaphora in "I do it so it feels like hell" (line 46) and " I do it so it feels real" (line 47).
While these various kinds of repetitions of sounds occur all over the place in "Lady Lazarus," they
do not occur in a particular pattern. The rhymes have an off–kilter feel to them, and this allows the
poem to be fast and free wheeling. The reader never knows when a rhyme or some other kind of
repetition is going to happen next. I think it works to the feeling of the speaker very effectively
because the speaker is in an erratic state of mind.
"The Waking" is characterized as a Villanelle, which means an Italian word referring to a rustic song
or dance. Villanelles have five tercets

Our differences are what makes us the same. We all try hard to be different but in the end we do
have a lot of similarities amongst us. As we all strive to be individuals, we also strive to 'fit in' these

that the boy was not guilty and felt that he should at least be given a fair trial. However the other 11
men of the jury quickly judged the boy to be guilty. After many hours of being locked in a room
together the men started to bond. They each shared a little about their own life and how they grew
up. Because there were so many different cultures and backgrounds, there was a lot of conflict. They
related the trial to their own life and through much discussion and conflict, they arrived at the same

Love Sonnets In Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 By William...
Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch's works. Petrarch was a man
who was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote 366 poems about his love for this
woman from the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems
that included lines like, "She ruled in beauty o'er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble
home, / And now her time for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she divine."
Petrarch wrote in such a way to charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However,
there is one writer who took a different approach when writing about the woman he admired. This
man considered on the greatest writers in the English language; William Shakespeare's "Sonnet 130"
is a reverse portrayal of Petrarch's ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare's
"Sonnet 130" is often also referred to as "My mistress' eyes," which adds emphasis to the first line,
"My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun." As the opening line, this makes readers aware of what
they are about to encounter throughout the sonnet. In this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the
work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it. Metaphors making comparisons to nature
are often used to show the beauty of something when writing. William Shakespeare's "Sonnet 130,"
makes the same comparisons, however he makes the metaphors in favor of the natural features
rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn't being rude to his mistress by doing so; he is taking things
at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been included below for easier comparison.
Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part of the sonnet takes up only one line, and does not
rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the comparisons to two lines. This has multiple
effects on the poem such as allowing it to expand. By allowing expansion, the sonnet is prevented
from being stagnant. Although Shakespeare was mocking other writer's forms of love poems, I feel
that he had a much deeper and more meaningful purpose to his sardonic writing. Shakespeare
wanted to show that women can be beautiful without having cheeks as red as rose, or eyes

Self Observation Of A Self
Throughout my self–observation, I felt the need to start with a baseline of who I am. Being raised in
the south I learned to respect myself and others, but sometimes people are just right down
obnoxious. Also, I hold myself to high standards because there's no reason why I cannot make my
goals a reality if I give it my all. This is known as Self–Concept: "The relatively stable set of
perceptions you hold of yourself." (Page 63) For example, in my observation I notice my patience
level is very thin for people who do not have respect for other's education. There's one girl in
particular yesterday, who texted the whole class, which my nursing class is from 8:30am to 2pm.
Therefore, as I'm trying to listen and highlight in my book, only thing I hear is the sound of her long
nails tapping on her keyboard or her phone vibrating. Than during break she wants to ask me for the
notes, because the teacher was moving too fast. Since this is still the first couple of weeks of school,
I try to be a little more understanding, but I will not do someone's work just for them not to pay
attention. Therefore today, when the test came around I had studied my butt off and scored very
well. But for the girl that sits next to me, she complained that the test was too hard and how we
didn't have the appropriate information to study for the test. In that moment, I found myself
comparing our differences, I work hard for my grades. I study and work my butt off then there's
those people that don't do anything in class but are the first ones to complain. The book recognized
this as Social Comparison: "Evaluating ourselves in terms of how we compare with others."(Page
66) Throughout the rest of my day, I noticed I compare myself to a lot of different people without
even noticing. Like when I was driving home I saw all these people texting and driving, and I just
could not help thinking like "what the heck, I can't even look to the side without going into the other
line so how in the world are they texting!" I do not compare myself to other to prove whose better
but I believe it just natural to compare others to yourself.
While at home, I observe the unreserved self–more than while am at school where I trend to be a
little reserved. I

Dickinson's "I dreaded that first robin so" Essay
Dickinson's poetry has been interpreted a number of different ways. To some she may come across
suicidal, to others depressed, or even philosophical to a number of readers. In her poem number 347
her depression and feelings of inadequacy are clear. In this poem Dickinson is a diva and is like any
other person, scared of change; feelings that people typically get over quickly. Dickinson is being
drama queen by explaining and lingering upon her depression and feelings of inadequacy by
comparing herself unreasonably to and transcending the beautiful structures involved with spring
through her uses of allusion, symbolism, and personification. Dickinson shows how she is being a

The grass is given the human characteristics of height and growth. She gives the grass these
qualities in order to make it seem like the grass is guarding her from everything else in the world.
Dickinson feels so inadequate that she must hide behind a sizable wall of grass in order that the rest
of the structures associated with spring would not come and see her. She assumes that the bees,
flowers and birds are all too beautiful to be associated with her and so she must remain incognito
and enshrouded by the grass. Her feelings are unreasonable as the structures that are all associated
with spring are some of the most beautiful in nature, therefore her comparisons and attempts to
transcend the beauty involved with nature is illogical. Dickinson tries to transcend and compare
herself to the nature around her but it is not a reasonable structure to transcend and so she feels
inadequate and decides to remain clandestine behind a wall of grass. Dickinson also uses the
symbolism of spring to show her unreasonable feelings of inadequacy by comparing herself to and
attempting to transcend it. Spring is typically seen as a time of renewal and renaissance because it is
the avenue to summer where nature is full of life and growing after the winter. Thus spring
symbolizes new birth and beauty. Dickinson feels that she cannot face spring because it is too
beautiful and fruitful a season for her. Compared to the season of spring and all it entails she feels
unattractive and

of the strange decision for a meal, you are tossed this strange requests from the "the mother" in the
story. "Break one of the ears off, they're so crispy, said mother" and "Try a piece of its gum, I've
stuffed its mouth with bread, said mother.", is there a hidden meaning behind these requests? Or are
they also Freudian slips like when "father" asks if she could at least cover up the ape's with
underpants or even a jockstrap she proceeds to defend herself against accusations that were not

Analysis Of How To Keep Jealousy And Envy From Ruining...
In modern society, one of the major determinants of our sense of wellbeing, in my opinion, is
comparing ourselves to others. While comparison motivates us to learn good qualities, pursue a
brighter future and own a grateful hearts, it also has an adverse effect when we compare our true
inner selves to the pictures of perfect life created by others on social media. To begin with, Amanda
Chan's article "How To Keep Jealousy And Envy From Ruining Your Life" serves as a foundation
which introduces both positive and negative sides of comparison. On the one hand, comparison
makes us more likely to be occupied by emotions of jealous and envy, which arouses feelings of
inferiority and spite, and thus reduces our happiness. For instance, envy has an

It is said that songs are just poems set to a catchy tune. Though Poems and songs speak to different
people in the same way and vice versa to different people in different ways. Poem: A piece of
writing that partakes of the mature of both speech and song that is nearly always rhythmical, usually
metaphorical, and often exhibits such formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanzaic structure. Song:
A short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung.
The poem and the song share similar qualities as in their subject. From birth to death is something

Poem Comparison Essay
Comparing the two poems "The Gift to Sing" by James Weldon Johnson and "Mother to Son" by
Langston Hughes, both poems have similar themes about life. "The Gift to Sing" tells the reader to
push away the darkness in life, but "Mother to Son" tells the reader to push through and not give up.
The tone within the two poems are quite different from each other. "The Gift to Sing" carries an
overall optimistic and near the end a powerful tone, "Mother to Son" carries a relatively negative
and strengthful tone. "The Gift to Sing" starts with a tone of negativity, and changes to a tone of
optimism. The poet begins the poem with negativity such as "Sometimes the mist overhangs my
path" and "shadowed by sorrow's somber wing" (Johnson). As the poem progresses, the tone
changes to a more optimistic tone. For example, the poet wrote "To turn the gloomy to cheerful day–
I softly sing" and "While in my heart swells a song, And I can sing". (Johnson) The poet uses
description to switch the tone from a negative one to a positive one. Near the end the poem contains
a powerful tone, such as "I pierce the darkness with a note" and "I ... Show more content on

A Good Comparative Essay: GCSE Poetry
Writing A Good Comparative Essay – GCSE Poetry
You will be asked to compare two or more poems in your exam.
You could be asked to write about the presentation of themes, people or places and the importance
of language.
A good comparative essay is like a multi–layered sandwich:
BREAD – A new point.
FILLING A – How one of your chosen poems illustrates this point.
FILLING B – How your other chosen poem illustrates this point.
BREAD – Your conclusion about this point.
This is what the examiners call cross–referencing – you talk about both poems all the way through
your answer.
What the examiner will look for:

What is the Examiner looking for in an A* response to the Poetry?
An A* response is characterised by a conceptualised, insightful and imaginative approach to the
texts that combines an analytical and exploratory use of detail in each poem individually with
evaluative comparison across both poems discussed in the answer.
Essentially, an A* response will set itself apart from the hundreds of other responses because it has
an individual and unique approach that shows the writer has developed their own individual ideas
about the texts. This approach is characterised by a confident engagement with the themes, ideas,
relationships and technical construction of the poems. Equally, the writer of an A* response will
show comparative skill; making links and cross referencing the poems using telling detail to form
the basis of insightful comparisons between the poems.
At first this may appear daunting but with a ruthless and systematic approach it can be achieved.
Essentially, the key to performing at this level is having your own ideas; if you can form your own
opinions about each of the poems then you will be able to write this kind of essay. The real skill here
is to marry the ideas that you have with a written style that allows you to showcase them in the
examination.
You might begin and end your response with some theoretical discussion of the concept in the title
question. In the case of this question, the concept is death, therefore you might begin your essay

His Coy Mistress Allusions
Sleeping softly, many dream of their loves, world peace, and life after death. These things, while at
the center of the dreams of many, are often compared to the grandest things in life. The allusion in
the poems "To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell, "Peace" by George Herbert, and "Hymn to
God, My God, In My Sickness" by John Donne most accurately craft the author's purpose of the
need for love, peace, and acceptance from God.
Since Andrew Marvell bases his poem, To His Coy Mistress, around his love for his mistress, he
begins to compare the extent by which he is willing to fight for her by comparing his patience for
her to famous places and things to exemplify his love, making it more clear to the audience how
much he truly loves her. To persuade his mistress to love him to the intensity by which he loves her,
the speaker tries to convince his mistress of his dedication to waiting forever for her. "Love you ten
years before the flood, And you should, if you please, refuse, Till the conversion of the Jews." In
many cases, there is a general allegiance to one's faith, because of this, the audience can clearly
understand the his exaggeration of how long he will wait for his mistress's love. The allusion in the
quote to a known reference of the importance of religion, especially to those who have been
persecuted for their beliefs, helps the audience understand his bring to light the depths of the
author's love. Because it is assumed by the audience there will never be a time

People would not want to hear that their loved ones merely gave up and died passively. This poem in
itself is a celebration of life, the poem is not only about death but it is an affirmation of life. To
further emphasise the points being made Dylan Thomas utilises a wide range of literary devices.
Parallelism is used from lines seven to fifteen to juxtapose the different attitudes of the so called
"genres" of men at their death. This is used to outline that if you continuously lead one set type of
lifestyle whether it is as a "wild man", a "grave man" or a "good man" you will not be satisfied when
your time comes to die. The only true way to be satisfied is to live a life of balance; only with a
good contrast can you be at peace.
The general attitude towards loss in "Death Of A Son" is the complete opposite. Whereas Thomas
reverently encourages the continuation of life, or at least to fight against death, in "Death of a Son"
death is an escape and as a release, it is therefore seen as a relief. The life of this boy has only been a
cause of suffering; suffering for his parents having to watch with no hope day after day and also
suffering for himself. This is shown as he "neither sang nor laughed" "but rather, like a house in
mourning kept the eye turned in to watch the silence". The word "mourning" here creates a sense of
foreboding due to the

Metaphors And Material, Tying And Training Texts :...
Metaphors are complex comparisons used in American writing. They can be used to compare and
analyze numerous things like expressions, objects, activities, and how we think. In the book, Tuning,
Tying and Training Texts: Metaphors for Revision, Barbara Tomlinson, the author, discusses her
viewpoints on metaphors and how they relate to the process of revision. She talks about how we
come to adopt our writing process which is through, "...metacognitive expressions and culturally
shared information" (Tomlinson 59). Metacognitive expressions are thought to be moments in life
when, "writers...become aware of themselves as thinkers" and" also pause, "to observe themselves
in the act of writing or to reflect on what they are doing" (Tomlinson 59). ... Show more content on

Through this use of language, we can better understand why the revision process is like sculpting. In
addition to using language like Lakoff and Johnson, we can also use their method of highlighting
and hiding to better comprehend the meaning of the metaphor. What can be clearly seen in the
metaphor is the idea that it is best to get all your thoughts and ides down on paper so you can then
go back and have only minor things that need revising. What can be hidden in this type of revision
process is that there are countless possibilities to making tiny changes, resulting in the writing never
fully being satisfied. It could go on and on and on because there's always ways to improve your
writing and change the meaning, which is why displeasure can be hidden. The comparison of
revising to sculpting relates to how I view my revision process to be. I like to make my rough draft
as complete as I can and then go back to fix little things for my revision. This is like the sculpting
metaphor because in sculpting you start with something as whole, like me making my rough draft as
complete as it can be, then you go back and keep working on it until you have ended up with what
you were looking for, in this case a sculpture or a complete paper. I find this way of revision to be
beneficial because I think it is always best to get everything down the first time so you and your
peers have more to work with later on and

Narrative Of A Mother Daughter
A tired mother reclines before a long mirror, beginning to prepare her ten–year–old daughter for
bed. As she works out the last few tangles from her hair, the woman's gaze turns to her reflection–
the dulling of her once youthful body palpable in the company of her youthful daughter. Author
Sharon Olds uses the narrative of a mother–daughter relationship to address issues of aging, death
and replacement, juxtaposing the youth of a ten–year–old with the maturity of the thirty–five–year–
old. "35/10" takes readers on one woman's journey of sorrow as she copes with the loss of her youth,
but deeper than that, her confrontation with grief as she realizes her daughter will one day replace
her. The woman feels as though she is beginning her life's decline just as her daughter begins her
ascent into womanhood, inquiring, "...Why is it / just as we begin to go / they begin to arrive..."
(lines 4–6). Olds takes on the voice of this despondent woman in her poem "35/10," using rich,
honest language and metaphoric comparisons to communicate observations about the cycle of life
and the pattern of replacement. In the main body of her poem, Olds lists a sequence of three key
metaphoric comparisons between the woman and her daughter's changing bodies. Both characters
are experiencing small "previews" of their futures through developmental transformations, the
younger a preview of womanhood and the older a preview of aging and ultimately future
replacement. The comparison is made in the same

Social Comparison Theory
The social comparison theory offers some level of explanation for how media images actually come
to impact the way women feel about their bodies. It examines how individuals evaluate themselves
in relation to peers, groups, and/or social categories (Milkie, 1999). The main argument is that
people compare themselves on many different dimensions with other individuals who are similar to
them. Depending on the target of comparison, a person will usually judge themselves as being either
or better or worse on some dimension. An upward comparison occurs when an individual compares
himself or herself to someone who fares better than they do on a particular construct. In contrast,
downward comparisons involve a person comparing himself or herself to ... Show more content on

Television, advertisements, magazines, and other forms of popular media provide a plethora of
references for upward social comparison. Images in the media generally project a standard to which
women are expected to aspire, yet that standard is almost completely impossible for most women to
achieve (Schooler et al., 2004; Thompson & Coovert, 1999). Women almost always fall short of
standards that are expected of them regarding physical appearance. Particularly for women, it is
difficult to go through a day without viewing images that send the message, "you're not good
enough." The pervasiveness of the media makes it very challenging for most women to avoid
evaluating themselves against the sociocultural standard of beauty (Milkie, 1999). Most companies
that target women in the media actually attempt to foster social comparison with idealized images,
in order to motivate women to buy products that will bring them closer to the ideal (e.g. diet
products, makeup, hair products). If women see a discrepancy between themselves and the images
they view in advertisements (which the almost definitely will), they will be more inclined to buy the
products that are advertised (Thompson & Coovert,

Comparison of Robert Burns ' "A Red, Red Rose" and Christina Rosetti 's "A Birthday" Though the
subject of both Robert Burns ' "A Red, Red Rose" and Christina Rosetti 's "A Birthday" is love, the
tone, diction, and form of each underline the different themes. The theme of the Burns poem is the
beautiful ardency of the lover saying farewell to his love, while the Rosetti poem focuses on the
joyous feelings of lovers being reunited. Both poems convey love as an emotion that transcends the
immediate world of feeling; thus, references are made by the speakers to eternity, and vivid imagery

This form allows Rossetti to present a balanced series of similes in the first stanza, likening her heart
to such beautiful things as "a rainbow shell / that paddles in a halcyon sea", and then declaring that
her heart is "gladder than all these." By describing the emotions before explaining why they should
be so, Rossetti puts emphasis on the reason for the happiness: "because my love is come to me." The
second stanza of this poem is full of imagery of the preparations to be made for the reception of her
love. Details such as "a dais of silk and down", "vair and purple dyes", and "peacocks with a
hundred eyes" suggest that the surroundings will decorated with sensuous materials to reflect the
speaker 's pleasure at the thought of her love. This description could be applied literally to a
wedding, or a similarly joyous reunion of two separated lovers; however, it can also be a metaphor
for the heavenly conditions the speaker experiences when she is with her lover. Burns also uses
metaphors in his poem when he alludes to the end of the time with the following lines: And I will
love thee still, my dear Till a ' the seas gang dry And the rocks melt wi ' the sun: And I will love
thee still, my dear, While the sands o ' life shall run. This instance, as well as the last line of the

speaker loves. In both poems, the strict form lends itself

Scott Hightower's poem "Father" could be very confusing to interpret. Throughout almost the
entirety of the poem the speaker tries to define who his father is by comparing him to various things.
As the poem begins the reader is provided with the information that the father "was" all of these
things this things that he is being compared to. The constant use of the word "was" gets the reader to
think 'how come the speaker's father is no longer comparable to these things?' After the speaker

After the reader makes an effort and takes his or her time to fully comprehend the poem entirely, it
becomes clearer that correlatively related ideas are expressed throughout the poem. The correlations
between several metaphors extend to intensify ideas about the father. As the speakers' father is
compared to being "an angel" he does not literally mean that his father was an angel with wings or
an angel from biblical times because that would be improbable for the reader to assume. What the
speaker seems to suggest through his metaphor is that his father was his savior and helper. This idea
is intensified throughout the poem because the father is being compared to a "lamb" which is
symbolic for Christ, a globally symbolic healer and helper; the speaker also states his father was a
getaway driver which suggests that his father guided him away from danger. Because the speaker
also compares his father to a law abiding, favorable, person such as a "cowboy" or a "Texas Ranger"
it seems as if he is trying to guide the reader's interpretation of a "getaway driver" away from a an
illegal activity such as robing a bank. In addition to comparing his father to helpers and getaway
drivers, the speaker also states his father "drove the boys away." This famous metaphor describing

Sassoon and Owen's rhetorical style help connect the reader to the events being described and
communicate successfully their feelings of anguish about the war. Sassoon and Owen further
communicate their contempt for the war and its unforgiving treatment of the soldiers through the use
of alliteration. Sassoon says, "Paid, with a pile of peace–complacent stone" (line 7). The sarcastic
use of "Paid" suggests Sassoon does not believe the Menin Gate to be a worthwhile reward. The
personification of the monument when Sassoon says, "peace–complacent stone" (line 7) creates the
idea that the monument has an unjustified feeling of self–worth and importance and stands
arrogantly, believing itself to be a comparable reward to the loss of life and misery endured by
thousands of soldiers and families. The repetition of the letter "p" makes it sound as though Sassoon
is spitting his words out in a bitter and degrading manner and is effective in demonstrating his anger
about the perceived ignorance displayed by the memorial (Internet 10). Owen also achieves an
emphatic effect when he uses alliteration in "Anthem For Doomed Youth" when he says, "Only the

Literary Devices InThe Sound Of Thunder, By Ray Bradbury
Watch Out! As they fight for their survival. In the short story, "The Sound of Thunder," by Ray
Bradbury, is about a man going into a time machine to hunt a T–Rex. He was traveling along with
his other companions through the time machine to meet the T–Rex. They ended up encountering
many obstacles as they're on their journey. Although people don't pay attention to what they're doing
even if it's the smallest things, it can lead up to a consequence as shown in literary devices such as;
simile, metaphor, and repetition.
At first, Bradbury uses simile as a way to illustrate a comparison of unlike things reflecting to the
character's actions. Simile is an expression comparing one thing to another using the words, like, or
as. In the short story, Eckels and the company travelled back 60 millions years ago. Travis warned
everyone to not step off the path, and began to talk consistently about the consequences if you
would step off the path. As Travis was talking about the consequences, it was brought up that if you
"step on a mouse, and you leave your print, like a Grand Canyon, across Eternity" (Bradbury, 22).
This shows us that Travis said this, but meant that if you make any changes in the past, even the
smallest ones, it can result into something disastrous in the future. It compares the effects of
stepping on a mouse to that at the Grand Canyon, which shows the resemblance. This is one of the
many similes used, but another comparing literary device is used as well in the

Sandburg's Poem Comparison
While Carl Sandburg's "To the Ghost of John Milton" and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Milton"
both discuss individuals leading rebellions against tyranny, their approaches widely differ.
Sandburg's use of free verse furthers his argument by symbolically showing that both individuals
and writing should be free. On the other hand, Longfellow structures his poem in the rhyme
structure of the Italian sonnet to add sound imagery of people revolting like waves crashing against
the shore. Although both emphasize Milton's rebellion against authoritative figures, I believe the
structure of Sandburg's poem in free verse better captures the freedom Milton craved. In "To the

The poem starts off with the speaker's methodical "pace" on "the sounding sea–beach" to
demonstrate how the idea of rebellion turns in people's thoughts in the context of the world. The
speaker notices how "voluminous billows roll and run, upheaving and subsiding," which represents
the rise and fall of people acquiring power. Then, the image of the "sun shining through their
sheeted emerald" symbolizes authoritative figures hiding behind their money to make decisions for
their own benefit. The speaker then moves on to discuss the slow movement to rebel as "the ninth
wave." The "loose–flowing garments into one" establishes that the common people unite as one
entity to express their concerns. The symbol of the ninth wave "plunging upon the shore" represents
the people rebelling against the rich shore–lined society for individual freedoms. Likewise, the
image of the sand changing into gold at the flooding of the waves symbolizes the shore–lined
authority's mindset shifting to protecting their money against the revolt. In the tenth line, the
speaker's tone shifts in favor of the protesters as he describes the "majestic cadence rise and fall," or
the dignity in hearing everyone's voices, not just the powerful, being vocalized. Moreover, he
describes how Milton, "England's Maenides," started this movement, made it expand and succeed in
a "ninth wave superb in strong." As a result of Milton expressing his thoughts on supporting
individual rights, others "flood their soul" with free thoughts, causing the formation of a "melodious

By writing lines with imagery such as "Life for me ain't no crystal stair" and "It's had tacks in it, and
splinters, and boards torn up" (Hughes) the poet can put a mental image of the terrible conditions of
the stairs and is able to create a negative tone with it. At line 14, which states "So boy don't turn
back" (Hughes) the poem switches from a tone of negativity to a tone with strength and hope. For
example, "I'se still climbin'," and "Don't you set down on the steps" (Hughes) By using a change in

Analysis Of Shakespeare 's ' Sonnet 130 '
Krystienne Delarosa
Ryan Wander
ENL 3
January 16, 2015
Sonnet 130 Shakespeare's "Sonnet 130" uses imagery to compare his lover to other objects in order
to convey his true feelings towards his mistress. With this idea, one can make the assumption that
Shakespeare's argument is accepting the normality of women by understanding that they don't all
look like supermodels or goddesses. His views about his mistress can relate to how present day men
look at their significant other. Shakespeare's view towards women shifts between his sonnets.
Comparing to "Sonnet 18", it seems as if Shakespeare has gained a more respect towards his
counterpart and with this change in view, it is interesting to see this change and how even though
with his time period, that some men looked at women with respect and acceptance. Comparing to
today's world, Shakespeare has thought of ideas that some men still have to grasp about women's
beauty. Today, some men still think that women need to live up to certain values and they have to
look a certain way in order to be loved. This does not apply to everyone, but there are still the few
men that think they have a power to throw upon these ideas into society, making many girls self–
conscious, feeling unappreciative, or even like they will never be good enough. Upon first glance in
the sonnet, it appears that Shakespeare is one of these men, but upon finishing the sonnet, it isn't the
case. This sonnet is ironic because Shakespeare spends the whole

Serial Poem Comparison
After watching the recent episodes of Serial, and then reviewing the two poems, I've noticed several
key similarities. Both the poems, and the episodes show situational similarities in perspective,
background, and heavy decisions. In Adnan's current situation, he explains how he doesn't really
want people to say "You seem like a nice guy, so you don't seem like you'd kill anyone." He just
want someone to say "You didn't do it, I have evidence proving your innocence." Because he knows
he didn't do it, and he wants people to actually know he didn't do it. That's probably why he is
contributing in helping Sarah with her episodes of Serial so people will know he's the good guy. It's
how he keeps going with this, like how in "I, Too", by Langston Hughes, the narrator despite being
treated badly, does not seem to care that much. "But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong.",
"They'll see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Well, Jay's story is very fishy, but I think it also has to do with Adnan's background. Adnan was
known to be a muslim, which meant that he wasn't supposed to date in the first place, but he would
also smoke marijuana and some other petty crimes as well, so that would also raise suspicion as
well. In the poem "O Me! O Life!" by Walt Whitman, he quotes "Of myself forever reproaching
myself, (for who more foolish than I and who more faithless?)", this can relate to Adnan being
interviewed and leading up to his current situation. The main question though is why would he keep
going? Well, he has been in jail now for over 15 years now, but why is he so contributing? Well,
because he knows he's innocent, and I think that's what helps keeps him going. Coming back to "O
me! O life!" He quotes; "Of the empty and useless years of the rest––with the rest intertwined;" this
meaning, it's been many years now, but he hasn't given up yet. He has a bad background and all, but
he knows he's the good guy, and he doesn't want to be seen as the bad

How It Will End By Duhamel Summary

  • 1. How It Will End By Duhamel Summary Relationships, Comparisons, Assumptions, and What Lies Beneath As time passes in a relationship, it is inevitable that confrontations are bound to occur. Whether small disagreements created from minor issues, to mediocre arguments based on daily matters, to serious incidents that can reflect relationship taboos, it is a couple's perception and understanding of each other that can strengthen or weaken their union. The poem "How It Will End" by Denise Duhamel portrays two couples involved in similar matters as those previously described. One couple is having, what appears to be, an argument at the beach and the second couple is watching them from afar, as they're on a boardwalk. As the poem progresses, the second couple's assumptions of what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Duhamel's poem, this is clearly represented. One couple appears to be far from having a "happy day at the beach;" they're arguing, the female's body language reveals a need for acceptance, distance, and rejection. The second couple's belief of what is stirring and their relationship comparison based on these thoughts, solidifies the underlying truth that marriage is not easy. Lines 20 to 21: "I start to coach the girl to leave her no–good lifeguard, but my husband predicts he'll never leave," are depicting the couple's mirroring on what they would actually do in this situation. The relationship judgement concept continues in lines 23 through 25 with "That's your problem–you think every fight is funny. You never take her seriously," and he says, "You never even give a guy a chance and you're always nagging" where a compromise issue is portrayed this time, obviously on both couples. Relationships require you to extend yourself for the sake of the other, that is collectively understanding each other's needs, accept mistakes, and practice forgiveness. Should relationships be compared to others? Is the concept of assumption safe for a union? Is proof necessary for a couple to be happy? Nothing good ever comes of comparing your relationship to someone else's. It is better to acknowledge that each bond is unique and has its strengths and weaknesses. One of the most important reasons not to compare relationships is that you're not seeing the full picture. Furthermore, in the last two lines of the poem: "She has her arms around his neck and is crying into his shoulder, He whisks her up into his hut. We look around, but no one is watching us" it confirms that the second couple has issues lying deep beneath their own. Once you begin comparing relationships, you'll probably start focusing on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This book or any portion thereof may not be reproduced or used in any manner whatsoever without the express written permission of the publisher except for the use of brief quotations in a book review. Introduction The comparison between these two devices can become a passionate one as users each have their preferences which essentially is what means more to them. To compare the Apple iPhone 6 Plus and the Galaxy Note 4 is not a simple comparison as they are essentially two different types of phones. However in this guide we will attempt to compare and contrast the differences between the two devices giving an unbiased view of what their functions are and their capabilities. Comparing the Features 1. Typing (Keyboard) The keyboard on the Apple iPhone Plus has integrated third party keyboard that comes with SwiftKey that is similar to Note 4's keyboard. However the one on the Apple device does not offer secondary keys when doing a long press and it does not auto insert words for you. The Note 4's keyboard has all of those features and is fully customizable. 2. Size The sizes of the two devices are almost comparable as the sizes are very close. The iPhone 6 Plus measures in at 6.22" x 3.06" x 0.28" while the Note 4's measurement is 6.04" x 3.09" x 0.33".Therefore they both will be in the same category of smart phones as the sizes are ... The two poems while seemingly similar, are different in some ways. Songs of Innocence starts with a very dark tone, but in the beginning of the fourth stanza there is a tone change from dark to rescue/religion. In Songs of Innocence the narrator begins to explain a dream that another chimney sweep had. Tom Dacre, a child, was upset when they shaved his head but the soot could no longer spoil his white hair. His head was shaved due to him contracting soot wart which is a cancer related to prolonged exposure to the carcinogens of soot. Him and 3 other kids die and get put into coffins. • 13. What I Learned From Taking American Civilization 1700 At the beginning of the semester I wrote an assignment addressing what I wanted to learn from taking American Civilization 1700. I went through the course syllabus and I chose skills that I thought were important for me to know better as well as important to my future career as a teacher. Two skills that I did not list that I wanted to work on were comparing and contrasting. Comparing and contrasting are two skills that I thought I was quite good at and had no problems with. When it came to do the Written Assignment #2 Compare and Contrast Essay, I found out that I was mistaken in my assumption. I struggled and had to obtain help from the professor on what there was to compare and contrast between the two documents the essay was about. After the professor helped and guided me, I was able to learn how to properly compare the similarities and contrast the differences between two different documents. I chose to post my first written assignment as my signature assignment on my personal eportfolio because I am proud of how it turned out and I feel it was the assignment I learned the most from. I didn't just learn to compare and contrast, I learned to interpret old documentation and references, I learned that the same time frame in history, for example, the immigration period that the assignment covered, can have two very different perspectives. The paper I wrote had both strength and weaknesses. The strengths were, I did a good job at finding thing to compare and contrast, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Compare the methods used to distribute two selected products and services In this report I will be comparing methods used by two different retailers on how they distribute two chosen products, of my choice, in two different retailing sectors. Seeing as the food and clothing sector both have very different styles of how they meet their product requirements, I will compare Tesco and JD; The products from these two companies itself that I'm going to compare is 'Tesco Value Bread' and Nike hoodies. For the food retailing sector (Tesco) there are many different departments that address what type of design is necessary for the distribution chain, the types that are available for a company such as Tesco is: frozen, chilled, and fresh foods, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are more outgoing costs in the production process for the Nike hoodies than the 'Tesco Value Bread' as the clothing's going to more places, and costs a considerable amount more to make than the bread. The warehousing locations used to hold the goods (the food and the clothing) may be identical in size but the number of locations is most likely different. Because of the fact that the Nike hoodies are bigger in size compared to the 'Tesco Value Bread' one may be lead to believe that Nike have purchased/hired out a lot more warehouses to contain their goods compared to Tesco. On the other hand, even though Nike may seem to have more warehouses than Tesco it doesn't necessarily mean that they sell more, as there are different levels of demand for both the products. Nike promote their hoodies through a lot of ways; Nike use mainly advertisements through the web, television and advertisements through shops–most of the time their own shops. They mass promote their Nike hoodies, whether they're new releases or just old hoodies that need to go. Through companies like JD that sell Nike hoodies most of the time they put the hoodies on sell to promote the product further and make it more appealing to the customers that may want to purchase it. • 21. Alone Maya Angelou Analysis It is safe to say that society today has evolved to value consumer goods over minimalistic properties and social values such as human interaction. Although a lot of good things have come from mass consumer products, many people believe it has had a harmful effect on our society. Maya Angelou was an American author, a poet, and a playwright. In 1978 she published the poem "Alone", where the speaker embraces the problem she notices in her society. One can assume that Maya's lyrical poem, expresses her own feelings regarding loneliness. Her poem highlights how wealth is not a cure for solidarity. In the poem Alone, Maya Angelou utilizes literary devices to emphasize the negative effects of a materialistic society and the importance of having the right amount of people in your life. Through her use of comparisons, Maya establishes the central theme regarding the detrimental effects of a materialistic society. For example, the speaker uses a simile to compare wealthy wives to banshees. "There are some millionaires/ With money they can't use/Their wives run round like banshees/Their children sing the blues." Maya is comparing the wives of the rich men to insane spiritual woman. She is using this comparison to emphasize how even though these women are wealthy, they lack the humanitarian connection to other people, and consequently, they are not happy. Additionally, Maya uses a metaphor to compare the hearts of the wealthy men to stone. "They've got expensive doctors/ To cure their hearts of stone." Maya uses this comparison to emphasize how depressed and withdrawn these people are. Furthermore, as Maya speaks of the millionaires and the money they "can not spend", she is stressing the idea that money cannot buy happiness, and that although they may seem like they have everything, their riches do not cure their loneliness. Additionally, Maya incorporates repetition to provide a sense of rhythm. "Alone, all alone/ Nobody, but nobody/ Can make it out here alone." She repeats these phrases multiple times throughout the poem, giving each verse an ending rhythm. Although Maya's lyrical poem does not follow a specific rhyme scheme or structure, the rhythm allows the poem to flow. Not only does repetition provide rhythm, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Men We Carry in Our Minds Analysis Essay An Analysis of "The Men We Carry in Our Minds" Alex Pinto British Columbia Institute of Technology LIBS 7001 January 29, 2012 AN ANALYSIS OF "THE MEN WE CARRY IN OUR MINDS" In the essay, "The Men We Carry in Our Minds", Scott Russell Sanders discusses his perspective on men in comparison to the impression that women carry in their minds. Sanders uses a unique way of writing through narration and life experiences to truly illustrate his point that the impressions of men or women are based on ones own life experiences. As a young boy knowing only of the hardships of workingmen, Sanders later experiences drastic social differences when he receives a scholarship to attend a university "meant for the children of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using the color's Black and White, Sanders clearly emphasizes the comparison between both completely different social classes. Sanders also states his topic sentence last to support and conclude his comparative narration at the beginning. This ties his narration into his climatic and summarizing point that show the difference between "the twin poles" of his early vision of manhood. These are the main ideas of his essay to depict the "brute toiling animal and the boss", which are then mention and described later in the essay. It is an effective way to begin because it directly states the scope of his thesis and previews the upcoming sections to come. As Sanders later develops his image of a hardworking man being either a "warrior" or "toiler", he bridges the gap between the poor and the rich by mentioning his scholarship to college. "A scholarship enabled me not only to attend college, a rare enough feat in my circle, but even to study in a university meant for the children of the rich"(para. 7). This transition also enables him to talk about the hardships that the women experienced in comparison to the men. "And for the first time I met women who told me that men were guilty of having kept all the joys and privileges of the earth for themselves" (para. 7). Near the beginning of the essay, Sanders focused

Comparison And Contrast In Research Paper Comparison and contrast is when you compare two alternatives in order to decide which one is better by finding the differences or similarities between them. In comparison you will find the differences between two or more things, and in contrast you will find the similarities. Depending on what type of paper you are writing, many times the subject will be chosen for you. However, in other situations you have to choose your own; when choosing the subjects keep in mind that they need to have obvious differences or similarities. When writing a comparison you will be constructing an analogy, which means using an unusual subject related to something more usual to better help the reader understand the subject. There is two common forms in analogy: metaphor, which is a figure of speech where one thing is compared to an object or action but no literally, is just a way so the reader can better comprehend, and simile that differs from metaphor because of the use of the words ''like'' or ''as'' when comparing, for example: my internet today is slow like a snail. How the Advertiser Presents the Product to the Consumer and Comparing the Adverts in Mercedes– Benz and Chrysler Voyagers Ads I have chosen to compare two adverts on cars. They are for a Mercedes–Benz and a Chrysler Voyager. I will be looking at all aspects of my chosen adverts and comparing them to each other. The advert for the Mercedes–Benz is very personal, and is constantly putting the reader in the driver's seat. It is laid out like a cinema screen, and that comparison continues throughout the advert. The picture is very passive and immediately places the reader at the centre of the advert, and the whole layout is calming. In comparison, in the Chrysler Voyager advert the attention of the ... This makes the reader feel important, and detached from the outside of the car. This is the feeling that the writers want to convey, as it presents a positive picture of what being in the car would feel like. This image that has been presented, of the reader in the driver's seat, is backed up by the picture of the view, through the windscreen, from the driver's point of view. The language used in the top section is very flowing, as the ride in the car would be, and it has been made smoother by use of alliteration such as 'watched the world', and 'unfold upon'. The bottom section of text starts by saying 'Picture the scene'. This immediately makes the reader think of a scene in a movie, and then it backs that up by saying 'set against the evenings pale and chaotic backdrop'. Although Mary Oliver believes that writing poetry is hard work, she uses extended metaphor, juxtaposition, and point of view to describe the writing process in comparison of building a house, which shows that Oliver sees poetry as something that involves mental labor which is a different challenge than physical labor . • 50. Poem Comparison The Difference in Similarity "Lady Lazarus," by Sylvia Plath and " "The Waking" by Theodore Roethke are two poems that relate directly to the speaker. Although both poems share this similarity, the way in which both works or literature are constructed are vastly different. Plath uses visual imagery and poetical tercets to show the pain and suffering of the speaker in her poem, while Roethke uses the musical Villanelle and synesthesia to create his picture of the speaker's inner thoughts and a sense of awakening. When reading the poem "Lady Lazarus" for the first time, the subject matter can be a little difficult to comprehend. The title of this poem and the speaker share the same name, ultimately making connections to the poet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A tercet is a three–line stanza. These stanzas are mostly made up of short, choppy lines with a mix of enjambment and end stop lines that can been seen as an example in lines 22–24 when the speaker says: "[This] is Number Three. (end stop)/ What a Trash (enjambment)/To annihilate each decade. (end stop). When read aloud, the words move quickly and forcefully. It almost sounds like the speaker is spitting her words out to the reader in disgust. This could relate to her overall feelings of disgust throughout the poem. This poem also has use of perfect rhyme and slant rhyme. One instance of perfect rhyme happens in lines 83–84, where the words hair and air rhyme. An example of slant rhyme occurs in lines 71–72, where the words burn and concern sound rhythmical. Also, there is use in anaphora in "I do it so it feels like hell" (line 46) and " I do it so it feels real" (line 47). While these various kinds of repetitions of sounds occur all over the place in "Lady Lazarus," they do not occur in a particular pattern. The rhymes have an off–kilter feel to them, and this allows the poem to be fast and free wheeling. The reader never knows when a rhyme or some other kind of repetition is going to happen next. I think it works to the feeling of the speaker very effectively because the speaker is in an erratic state of mind. • 58. Love Sonnets In Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 By William... Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch's works. Petrarch was a man who was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote 366 poems about his love for this woman from the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems that included lines like, "She ruled in beauty o'er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble home, / And now her time for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she divine." Petrarch wrote in such a way to charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However, there is one writer who took a different approach when writing about the woman he admired. This man considered on the greatest writers in the English language; William Shakespeare's "Sonnet 130" is a reverse portrayal of Petrarch's ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare's "Sonnet 130" is often also referred to as "My mistress' eyes," which adds emphasis to the first line, "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun." As the opening line, this makes readers aware of what they are about to encounter throughout the sonnet. In this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it. Metaphors making comparisons to nature are often used to show the beauty of something when writing. William Shakespeare's "Sonnet 130," makes the same comparisons, however he makes the metaphors in favor of the natural features rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn't being rude to his mistress by doing so; he is taking things at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been included below for easier comparison. Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part of the sonnet takes up only one line, and does not rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the comparisons to two lines. This has multiple effects on the poem such as allowing it to expand. By allowing expansion, the sonnet is prevented from being stagnant. Although Shakespeare was mocking other writer's forms of love poems, I feel that he had a much deeper and more meaningful purpose to his sardonic writing. Shakespeare wanted to show that women can be beautiful without having cheeks as red as rose, or eyes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Self Observation Of A Self Throughout my self–observation, I felt the need to start with a baseline of who I am. Being raised in the south I learned to respect myself and others, but sometimes people are just right down obnoxious. Also, I hold myself to high standards because there's no reason why I cannot make my goals a reality if I give it my all. This is known as Self–Concept: "The relatively stable set of perceptions you hold of yourself." (Page 63) For example, in my observation I notice my patience level is very thin for people who do not have respect for other's education. There's one girl in particular yesterday, who texted the whole class, which my nursing class is from 8:30am to 2pm. Therefore, as I'm trying to listen and highlight in my book, only thing I hear is the sound of her long nails tapping on her keyboard or her phone vibrating. Than during break she wants to ask me for the notes, because the teacher was moving too fast. Since this is still the first couple of weeks of school, I try to be a little more understanding, but I will not do someone's work just for them not to pay attention. Therefore today, when the test came around I had studied my butt off and scored very well. But for the girl that sits next to me, she complained that the test was too hard and how we didn't have the appropriate information to study for the test. In that moment, I found myself comparing our differences, I work hard for my grades. I study and work my butt off then there's those people that don't do anything in class but are the first ones to complain. The book recognized this as Social Comparison: "Evaluating ourselves in terms of how we compare with others."(Page 66) Throughout the rest of my day, I noticed I compare myself to a lot of different people without even noticing. Like when I was driving home I saw all these people texting and driving, and I just could not help thinking like "what the heck, I can't even look to the side without going into the other line so how in the world are they texting!" I do not compare myself to other to prove whose better but I believe it just natural to compare others to yourself. In this poem Dickinson is a diva and is like any other person, scared of change; feelings that people typically get over quickly. She assumes that the bees, flowers and birds are all too beautiful to be associated with her and so she must remain incognito and enshrouded by the grass. Her feelings are unreasonable as the structures that are all associated with spring are some of the most beautiful in nature, therefore her comparisons and attempts to transcend the beauty involved with nature is illogical. Dickinson tries to transcend and compare herself to the nature around her but it is not a reasonable structure to transcend and so she feels inadequate and decides to remain clandestine behind a wall of grass. Dickinson also uses the symbolism of spring to show her unreasonable feelings of inadequacy by comparing herself to and attempting to transcend it. Spring is typically seen as a time of renewal and renaissance because it is the avenue to summer where nature is full of life and growing after the winter. Thus spring symbolizes new birth and beauty. Dickinson feels that she cannot face spring because it is too beautiful and fruitful a season for her. While comparison motivates us to learn good qualities, pursue a brighter future and own a grateful hearts, it also has an adverse effect when we compare our true inner selves to the pictures of perfect life created by others on social media. To begin with, Amanda Chan's article "How To Keep Jealousy And Envy From Ruining Your Life" serves as a foundation which introduces both positive and negative sides of comparison. "The Gift to Sing" tells the reader to push away the darkness in life, but "Mother to Son" tells the reader to push through and not give up. The tone within the two poems are quite different from each other. "The Gift to Sing" carries an overall optimistic and near the end a powerful tone, "Mother to Son" carries a relatively negative and strengthful tone. "The Gift to Sing" starts with a tone of negativity, and changes to a tone of optimism. The poet begins the poem with negativity such as "Sometimes the mist overhangs my path" and "shadowed by sorrow's somber wing" (Johnson). As the poem progresses, the tone changes to a more optimistic tone. For example, the poet wrote "To turn the gloomy to cheerful day– I softly sing" and "While in my heart swells a song, And I can sing". What is the Examiner looking for in an A* response to the Poetry? An A* response is characterised by a conceptualised, insightful and imaginative approach to the texts that combines an analytical and exploratory use of detail in each poem individually with evaluative comparison across both poems discussed in the answer. Essentially, an A* response will set itself apart from the hundreds of other responses because it has an individual and unique approach that shows the writer has developed their own individual ideas about the texts. This approach is characterised by a confident engagement with the themes, ideas, relationships and technical construction of the poems. Equally, the writer of an A* response will show comparative skill; making links and cross referencing the poems using telling detail to form the basis of insightful comparisons between the poems. At first this may appear daunting but with a ruthless and systematic approach it can be achieved. Essentially, the key to performing at this level is having your own ideas; if you can form your own opinions about each of the poems then you will be able to write this kind of essay. The real skill here is to marry the ideas that you have with a written style that allows you to showcase them in the examination.

  • 99. His Coy Mistress Allusions Sleeping softly, many dream of their loves, world peace, and life after death. These things, while at the center of the dreams of many, are often compared to the grandest things in life. The allusion in the poems "To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell, "Peace" by George Herbert, and "Hymn to God, My God, In My Sickness" by John Donne most accurately craft the author's purpose of the need for love, peace, and acceptance from God. Since Andrew Marvell bases his poem, To His Coy Mistress, around his love for his mistress, he begins to compare the extent by which he is willing to fight for her by comparing his patience for her to famous places and things to exemplify his love, making it more clear to the audience how much he truly loves her. To persuade his mistress to love him to the intensity by which he loves her, the speaker tries to convince his mistress of his dedication to waiting forever for her. This poem in itself is a celebration of life, the poem is not only about death but it is an affirmation of life. To further emphasise the points being made Dylan Thomas utilises a wide range of literary devices. Parallelism is used from lines seven to fifteen to juxtapose the different attitudes of the so called "genres" of men at their death. This is used to outline that if you continuously lead one set type of lifestyle whether it is as a "wild man", a "grave man" or a "good man" you will not be satisfied when your time comes to die. The only true way to be satisfied is to live a life of balance; only with a good contrast can you be at peace. The general attitude towards loss in "Death Of A Son" is the complete opposite. Whereas Thomas reverently encourages the continuation of life, or at least to fight against death, in "Death of a Son" death is an escape and as a release, it is therefore seen as a relief. The life of this boy has only been a cause of suffering; suffering for his parents having to watch with no hope day after day and also suffering for himself. This is shown as he "neither sang nor laughed" "but rather, like a house in

They can be used to compare and analyze numerous things like expressions, objects, activities, and how we think. In the book, Tuning, Tying and Training Texts: Metaphors for Revision, Barbara Tomlinson, the author, discusses her viewpoints on metaphors and how they relate to the process of revision. She talks about how we come to adopt our writing process which is through, "...metacognitive expressions and culturally shared information" (Tomlinson 59). Metacognitive expressions are thought to be moments in life when, "writers...become aware of themselves as thinkers" and" also pause, "to observe themselves in the act of writing or to reflect on what they are doing" (Tomlinson 59). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through this use of language, we can better understand why the revision process is like sculpting. In addition to using language like Lakoff and Johnson, we can also use their method of highlighting and hiding to better comprehend the meaning of the metaphor. What can be clearly seen in the metaphor is the idea that it is best to get all your thoughts and ides down on paper so you can then go back and have only minor things that need revising. What can be hidden in this type of revision process is that there are countless possibilities to making tiny changes, resulting in the writing never fully being satisfied. It could go on and on and on because there's always ways to improve your writing and change the meaning, which is why displeasure can be hidden. The comparison of revising to sculpting relates to how I view my revision process to be. I like to make my rough draft as complete as I can and then go back to fix little things for my revision. This is like the sculpting metaphor because in sculpting you start with something as whole, like me making my rough draft as complete as it can be, then you go back and keep working on it until you have ended up with what you were looking for, in this case a sculpture or a complete paper. I find this way of revision to be beneficial because I think it is always best to get everything down the first time so you and your peers have more to work with later on and ... What would useful for your audience to know?] Social media – something we all use in excessive amounts without realizing that we are using it or how much we are using it. When most people think of social media, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram are probably the first platforms that come to mind. • 116. Narrative Of A Mother Daughter A tired mother reclines before a long mirror, beginning to prepare her ten–year–old daughter for bed. As she works out the last few tangles from her hair, the woman's gaze turns to her reflection– the dulling of her once youthful body palpable in the company of her youthful daughter. Author Sharon Olds uses the narrative of a mother–daughter relationship to address issues of aging, death and replacement, juxtaposing the youth of a ten–year–old with the maturity of the thirty–five–year– old. "35/10" takes readers on one woman's journey of sorrow as she copes with the loss of her youth, but deeper than that, her confrontation with grief as she realizes her daughter will one day replace her. The woman feels as though she is beginning her life's decline just as her daughter begins her ascent into womanhood, inquiring, "...Why is it / just as we begin to go / they begin to arrive..." (lines 4–6). Olds takes on the voice of this despondent woman in her poem "35/10," using rich, honest language and metaphoric comparisons to communicate observations about the cycle of life and the pattern of replacement. In the main body of her poem, Olds lists a sequence of three key metaphoric comparisons between the woman and her daughter's changing bodies. Both characters are experiencing small "previews" of their futures through developmental transformations, the younger a preview of womanhood and the older a preview of aging and ultimately future replacement. • 120. Social Comparison Theory The social comparison theory offers some level of explanation for how media images actually come to impact the way women feel about their bodies. It examines how individuals evaluate themselves in relation to peers, groups, and/or social categories (Milkie, 1999). The main argument is that people compare themselves on many different dimensions with other individuals who are similar to them. Depending on the target of comparison, a person will usually judge themselves as being either or better or worse on some dimension. An upward comparison occurs when an individual compares himself or herself to someone who fares better than they do on a particular construct. In contrast, downward comparisons involve a person comparing himself or herself to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Television, advertisements, magazines, and other forms of popular media provide a plethora of references for upward social comparison. Images in the media generally project a standard to which women are expected to aspire, yet that standard is almost completely impossible for most women to achieve (Schooler et al., 2004; Thompson & Coovert, 1999). Women almost always fall short of standards that are expected of them regarding physical appearance. Particularly for women, it is difficult to go through a day without viewing images that send the message, "you're not good enough." The pervasiveness of the media makes it very challenging for most women to avoid evaluating themselves against the sociocultural standard of beauty (Milkie, 1999). Most companies that target women in the media actually attempt to foster social comparison with idealized images, in order to motivate women to buy products that will bring them closer to the ideal (e.g. diet products, makeup, hair products). If women see a discrepancy between themselves and the images they view in advertisements (which the almost definitely will), they will be more inclined to buy the products that are advertised (Thompson & Coovert, ... Instead of simply presenting the perfectly lovely piece of costume jewelry, my mind began to create a much more elaborate scenario that snowballed to catastrophe. When we got to our first hour study hall, I made a big deal of making certain that several people saw my ring. As they asked, I told them that my maternal grandfather was a full–blooded Native American (he actually was), and that he had given me this gorgeous piece of turquoise jewelry which I wanted to give to Laura Beth as thanks for her help and welcoming manner. As I had hoped, the class was impressed and I knew my status was immediately elevated in this new social group. All was well until one of the boys asked to see the ring. As he examined it, I heard an ominous snicker before he loudly announced, "Hey, Gina, is your grandpa's name Chief Avon?" Naturally, I was mortified and began to cry and repent about fabricating the story. What is interesting is that from that time forward, the students were much more helpful and welcoming. The theme of the Burns poem is the beautiful ardency of the lover saying farewell to his love, while the Rosetti poem focuses on the joyous feelings of lovers being reunited. Both poems convey love as an emotion that transcends the immediate world of feeling; thus, references are made by the speakers to eternity, and vivid imagery is employed to describe extraordinary settings. This form allows Rossetti to present a balanced series of similes in the first stanza, likening her heart to such beautiful things as "a rainbow shell / that paddles in a halcyon sea", and then declaring that her heart is "gladder than all these." By describing the emotions before explaining why they should be so, Rossetti puts emphasis on the reason for the happiness: "because my love is come to me." The second stanza of this poem is full of imagery of the preparations to be made for the reception of her love. Details such as "a dais of silk and down", "vair and purple dyes", and "peacocks with a hundred eyes" suggest that the surroundings will decorated with sensuous materials to reflect the speaker 's pleasure at the thought of her love. This description could be applied literally to a wedding, or a similarly joyous reunion of two separated lovers; however, it can also be a metaphor for the heavenly conditions the speaker experiences when she is with her lover. Burns also uses metaphors in his poem when he alludes to the end of the time with the following lines: And I will love thee still, my dear Till a ' the seas gang dry And the rocks melt wi ' the sun: And I will love thee still, my dear, While the sands o ' life shall run. Throughout almost the entirety of the poem the speaker tries to define who his father is by comparing him to various things. As the poem begins the reader is provided with the information that the father "was" all of these things this things that he is being compared to. The constant use of the word "was" gets the reader to think 'how come the speaker's father is no longer comparable to these things?' After the speaker reveals that his father is no longer around, he describes how his father impacted him. Details about the father as well as descriptions of the impacts the father has distraught on the speaker are all presented in metaphors. The repetitive pattern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the reader makes an effort and takes his or her time to fully comprehend the poem entirely, it becomes clearer that correlatively related ideas are expressed throughout the poem. The correlations between several metaphors extend to intensify ideas about the father. As the speakers' father is compared to being "an angel" he does not literally mean that his father was an angel with wings or an angel from biblical times because that would be improbable for the reader to assume. What the speaker seems to suggest through his metaphor is that his father was his savior and helper. This idea is intensified throughout the poem because the father is being compared to a "lamb" which is symbolic for Christ, a globally symbolic healer and helper; the speaker also states his father was a getaway driver which suggests that his father guided him away from danger. Because the speaker also compares his father to a law abiding, favorable, person such as a "cowboy" or a "Texas Ranger" it seems as if he is trying to guide the reader's interpretation of a "getaway driver" away from a an illegal activity such as robing a bank. In addition to comparing his father to helpers and getaway drivers, the speaker also states his father "drove the boys away." Sassoon and Owen's rhetorical style help connect the reader to the events being described and communicate successfully their feelings of anguish about the war. Sassoon and Owen further communicate their contempt for the war and its unforgiving treatment of the soldiers through the use of alliteration. Sassoon says, "Paid, with a pile of peace–complacent stone" (line 7). The sarcastic use of "Paid" suggests Sassoon does not believe the Menin Gate to be a worthwhile reward. The personification of the monument when Sassoon says, "peace–complacent stone" (line 7) creates the idea that the monument has an unjustified feeling of self–worth and importance and stands arrogantly, believing itself to be a comparable reward to the loss of life and misery endured by thousands of soldiers and families. The repetition of the letter "p" makes it sound as though Sassoon is spitting his words out in a bitter and degrading manner and is effective in demonstrating his anger about the perceived ignorance displayed by the memorial (Internet 10). Owen also achieves an emphatic effect when he uses alliteration in "Anthem For Doomed Youth" when he says, "Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle" (line 3). In the short story, "The Sound of Thunder," by Ray Bradbury, is about a man going into a time machine to hunt a T–Rex. He was traveling along with his other companions through the time machine to meet the T–Rex. They ended up encountering many obstacles as they're on their journey. Although people don't pay attention to what they're doing even if it's the smallest things, it can lead up to a consequence as shown in literary devices such as; simile, metaphor, and repetition. At first, Bradbury uses simile as a way to illustrate a comparison of unlike things reflecting to the character's actions. Simile is an expression comparing one thing to another using the words, like, or as. In the short story, Eckels and the company travelled back 60 millions years ago. Travis warned everyone to not step off the path, and began to talk consistently about the consequences if you would step off the path. As Travis was talking about the consequences, it was brought up that if you "step on a mouse, and you leave your print, like a Grand Canyon, across Eternity" (Bradbury, 22). This shows us that Travis said this, but meant that if you make any changes in the past, even the smallest ones, it can result into something disastrous in the future. It compares the effects of stepping on a mouse to that at the Grand Canyon, which shows the resemblance. Sandburg's Poem Comparison While Carl Sandburg's "To the Ghost of John Milton" and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Milton" both discuss individuals leading rebellions against tyranny, their approaches widely differ. Sandburg's use of free verse furthers his argument by symbolically showing that both individuals and writing should be free. On the other hand, Longfellow structures his poem in the rhyme structure of the Italian sonnet to add sound imagery of people revolting like waves crashing against the shore. Although both emphasize Milton's rebellion against authoritative figures, I believe the structure of Sandburg's poem in free verse better captures the freedom Milton craved. The poem starts off with the speaker's methodical "pace" on "the sounding sea–beach" to demonstrate how the idea of rebellion turns in people's thoughts in the context of the world. The speaker notices how "voluminous billows roll and run, upheaving and subsiding," which represents the rise and fall of people acquiring power. Then, the image of the "sun shining through their sheeted emerald" symbolizes authoritative figures hiding behind their money to make decisions for their own benefit. The speaker then moves on to discuss the slow movement to rebel as "the ninth wave." The "loose–flowing garments into one" establishes that the common people unite as one entity to express their concerns. The symbol of the ninth wave "plunging upon the shore" represents the people rebelling against the rich shore–lined society for individual freedoms. Likewise, the image of the sand changing into gold at the flooding of the waves symbolizes the shore–lined authority's mindset shifting to protecting their money against the revolt. In the tenth line, the speaker's tone shifts in favor of the protesters as he describes the "majestic cadence rise and fall," or the dignity in hearing everyone's voices, not just the powerful, being vocalized. Moreover, he describes how Milton, "England's Maenides," started this movement, made it expand and succeed in a "ninth wave superb in strong." Mother To Son Poem Comparison Mark Kamiya 01/22/2017 Pd.1 Poem Comparison Essay Comparing the two poems "The Gift to Sing" by James Weldon Johnson and "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes, both poems have similar themes about life. Analysis Of Shakespeare 's ' Sonnet 130 ' Krystienne Delarosa Ryan Wander ENL 3 January 16, 2015 Sonnet 130 Shakespeare's "Sonnet 130" uses imagery to compare his lover to other objects in order to convey his true feelings towards his mistress. With this idea, one can make the assumption that Shakespeare's argument is accepting the normality of women by understanding that they don't all look like supermodels or goddesses. His views about his mistress can relate to how present day men look at their significant other. Shakespeare's view towards women shifts between his sonnets. Comparing to "Sonnet 18", it seems as if Shakespeare has gained a more respect towards his counterpart and with this change in view, it is interesting to see this change and how even though with his time period, that some men looked at women with respect and acceptance. Comparing to today's world, Shakespeare has thought of ideas that some men still have to grasp about women's beauty. Today, some men still think that women need to live up to certain values and they have to look a certain way in order to be loved. This does not apply to everyone, but there are still the few men that think they have a power to throw upon these ideas into society, making many girls self– conscious, feeling unappreciative, or even like they will never be good enough. Upon first glance in the sonnet, it appears that Shakespeare is one of these men, but upon finishing the sonnet, it isn't the case. This sonnet is ironic because Shakespeare spends the whole ... In Adnan's current situation, he explains how he doesn't really want people to say "You seem like a nice guy, so you don't seem like you'd kill anyone." He just want someone to say "You didn't do it, I have evidence proving your innocence." Because he knows he didn't do it, and he wants people to actually know he didn't do it.
