A vignette from The House on Mango Street, "Those Who Don't," by Sandra Cisneros, the poem
"My Parents Kept Me from Children Who Were Rough," by Stephen Spender, and another poem
"We Real Cool," by Gwendolyn Brooks share many similarities and differences. These three
pieces of literature talk about racism and rough children. "Those Who Don't" is about racism and
how people think about others without getting to know them. "My Parents Kept Me from
Children Who Were Rough" explains how a good child wants to be like other children who are
bad. "We Real Cool" talks about pool players who are bad. These pieces of literature compare and

Real Cool" are the same because they are safe with all the same kind of people around. "My

because they are told in different perspectives. All these pieces show differences and similarities

language in all these works of literature differ. For example, "We Real Cool" shows mainly
alliteration. "We/ Sing sin. We/ Thin gin "(5 to 7) shows the alliteration with the word "we." It also
shows repetition with "we." "Those Who Don't" shows barely any form of figurative language. "...
our knees go shakity–shake..." (28) is an onomatopoeia. Mostly there isn't much figurative language
in "Those Who Don't." "My Parents Kept Me from Children Who Were Rough" has a lot of
similes. "Who threw words like stones..." (2) explains a simile meaning that the children said cruel
words. These pieces are all alike because they mainly show or only have one kind of figurative
language. "My Parents Kept Me from Children Who Were Rough" and "We Real Cool" repetitively

Cleaning with Barry and Britt
The act of being habitually and carefully neat and clean can make for an interesting topic in a
comparison and contrast essay. Dave Barry compares the differences of how women and men clean
in his compare and contrast essay, Batting Clean– Up and Striking out. In Suzanne Britt's compare
and contrast essay, Neat People vs. Sloppy People she compares the differences of personalities
between Sloppy people and neat people. Both essays compare cleanliness in one way or another
however they both have differences regarding their use of humor, examples, and points made in their
thesis.

The way Barry and Britt support their points in their compare and contrast essays differ. In Batting
Clean–Up and Striking Out, Barry uses lots of personal stories and factual happenings to explain his
opinions. For example, to explain how men are worse at cleaning Barry specifically refers to a
volcano eruption that happened in Pompei because the men, who were in control of the cleaning,
did not notice ashes piling up around and in their houses. In addition, when describing how men
are better with sports than woman he refers to a personal story; specifically a story about a dinner
party that he attended where the men were glued to the World Series and the women were still
chatting amongst themselves. These forms of examples are personal stories that offer validity. On
the other hand, in Britt's Neat people vs. Sloppy people she uses more dreamt up incidences to
explain her opinions. For example when explaining how neat people are "viscous with their mail"
she explains, " All ads, catalogs, pleas for charitable contributions, church bulletins, and
money–saving coupons go straight into the trash can without being opened...No sentimental
salvaging of birthday cards or the last letter a dying relative ever wrote. Into the trash it goes" (256).
As seen in this example, Britt uses lots of lists and possible incidents that could exist to support her

Difference Between The Relationships Of A Study in Pink And A Study In Scarlet
The relationship between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are similar in the television show A
Study In Pink and the book A Study In Scarlet because of the style that Sherlock and Watson use to
solve mysteries, but also have differences because the television show lets the viewer have a better
understanding of the characters and setting of the story. When you compare the story ofA Study In
Scarlet and the television show A Study In Pink, most parts are similar, but the television show has

In part two of the book A Study In Scarlet, the readers are introduced toSherlock Holmes in the eyes
of John Watson, "In height he was rather over six feet ... His eyes were sharp ... his thin, hawk–like
nose gave his whole expression an air of alertness ... His chin, too, had the prominence and
squareness which mark the man of determination." These characteristics help the readers have a
visual of Sherlock and create the character in their mind. Also, the book gives detail of the setting
of the crime scenes to help the readers have a better understanding of the tone of the mystery. This
is different than in the television show A Study In Pink because in the television show, the viewer
sees Sherlock Holmes, John Watson and the setting of the story so they do not have to imagine
what the story is like. In some ways, people can like reading the book because it can help their
imagination or they would prefer to watch the television show for more of an entertainment

1. The two types of organization that may be used in a compare/contrast essay would be either block
or point–by–point. With block, the first set of paragraphs covers one item completely and then the
other set of paragraphs covers the other item completely. In point–by–point, each point is addressed
in a separate paragraph, alternating between both subjects.
2. One thing I learned from reading this overview was the different types of methods there are
when comparing and contrasting two subjects. I didn't know there were specific ways to organize
