 India decided to go to space when Indian National Committee for
Space Research (INCOSPAR) was set up by the Government of
India in 1962. With the visionary Dr Vikram Sarabhai at its helm,
INCOSPAR set up the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching
Station (TERLS) in Thiruvananthapuram for upper atmospheric
research. Indian Space Research Organisation, formed in 1969,
superseded the erstwhile INCOSPAR. Vikram Sarabhai, having
identified the role and importance of space technology in a
Nation's development, provided ISRO the necessary direction to
function as an agent of development. ISRO then embarked on its
mission to provide the Nation space based services and to develop
the technologies to achieve the same independently.
 Throughout the years, ISRO has upheld its mission of bringing
space to the service of the common man, to the service of the
Nation. In the process, it has become one of the six largest space
agencies in the world.
What is ISRO

 Achievements of ISRO
 ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) is an Indian space research
organisation who has made India proud through its glorious achievements.
Here is the list of achievements of ISRO till date.
1) Aryabhatta satellite: ISRO and Indias first indigenous satellite, named after
the Indian astronomer was successfully deployed from Kapustin Yar, a Russian
launch facility.
2) SLV- 3: The SLV- 3 was ISROs first attempt at developing a satellite launch
vehicle. The first experimental flight in August 1979 successfully placed the
Rohini Satellite in near-Earth orbit. The SLV project was helmed by Dr A.P.J
Abdul Kalam and he went on to develop the PSLV projects which are even
used till date.
3) Chandrayaan- 1: The scientists at ISRO launched Indias first lunar probe
dubbed Chandrayaan-1 successfully. Although the mission lasted for just 312
days as in August 2009, ISRO lost all contact with the probe, the mission is
deemed successful for most. The Chandrayaan- 1 discovered water on the lunar
surface which is considered to be its greatest achievement.
Achievements Of ISRO

 The first satellite of India was named after a prominent
mathematician Aryabhata . It was launched on April 19,1975.
from Kapustin Yar, a Soviet rocket launch and development site
in Astrakhan Oblast using a Kosmos-3M launch vehicle.
 The Ariane Passenger Payload Experiment (APPLE) was
ISRO's first indigenous, experimental communication satellite.
 Bhaskara-I was the first experimental remote sensing satellite
built in India.

 Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was an Indian physicist
and astronomer who initiated space research and
helped develop nuclear power in India. He was
honoured with Padma Bhushan in 1966 and the
Padma Vibhushan in 1972. He is internationally
regarded as the Father of the Indian Space Program.

 Gaganyaan-1: Gganyan is an Indian crewed orbital spacecraft. It is intended to
be the basis of the Indian Human Spaceflight Programme. This spacecraft is
being built for three people only. An upgraded version would be equipped
with rendezvous and docking capability.
 Aditya-L1: It is one of the first Indian observatory class missions. It would
study the solar corona using a solar coronagraph. It is expected to be launched
by the middle of 2022. X-Ray spectroscopic instrument would be providing
flare spectra while in situ payloads would observe solar events.
 Chandrayaan-3: It is a lunar rover to be launched in 2022. It would be a mission
repeat of Chandrayaan-2 with a lander and a rover. It would be launched to
attempt a soft landing of the lunar surface.
 Gaganyaan-2: It would be an uncrewed spacecraft flight test. It would be the
second of the two flight tests prior to the inaugural crewed mission.
