accommodations and some may need 
modifications 
 May be one of the biggest challenges in 
teaching 
 Important to learn about common 
indicators of learning disabilities 
› Gets frustrated easily, has trouble controlling 
emotions, inflexible, and gets confused easily
 For a variety of students with different 
reasons such as learning disabilities, 
emotional disorders, autism, speech or 
language impairment etc. 
 Referrals for special services start with 
gathering data, and if needed testing for 
specific learning disabilities 
 In order to receive services, it must be 
proven that the disability has an impact 
of the student’s education
 Items or systems used to improve the 
educational experiences of students with 
disabilities 
 Helps students with disabilities to function 
better and increases the capabilities 
 May be items such as wheelchairs, 
technology for visual impairments, and 
speech generating devices
 1-collect information about the child and family 
 2- determine activities that the student takes part in 
and what is preventing them from participating more 
 3- determine how you can observe whether 
intervention in successful or not 
 4- brainstorm assistive technology solutions for student 
 5- test the assistive technology method you have 
selected 
 6- reflect on your plan, whether it worked, and 
changes that need to be made
 Technology for mild disabilities- note-taking 
through videotaping, organization 
through production of software-based 
organizers, and word processing 
 Products available- E-books, voice 
recognition software, text-to-speech 
software, brainstorming and graphic 
organizers
 Can be an equalizer for students with 
disabilities that might prevent 
participation 
 Provides tools for teachers to better work 
with students in Special Education
