Explaination Essay-Thinner by Stephen King
Explanation Essay: Thinner
Best Seller
Upper Iowa University
Abstract
Stephen King is the author of over thirty novels, many short stories, several screenplays and other literature, and has remained on, or at least been a
staple on the best seller list. Over his career of writing his literature has gained criticism and praise, depending on who you are asking. Whether or not
the novel Thinner is best seller material again would depend on who you inquire with. I will not attempt to say whether or not this novel belonged on
the best seller list at the time, but rather just to investigate into what was written and said about it and the author Stephen King.

Some want to say that Stephen King is a modern master, but there are so many who question why he is. "I think this notion (modern master) is
nonsense. After reading over a dozen books in which King seldom sidesteps clichГ©s, I think perhaps it is more likely that he just had very little
original to say" (Bloom, 2007, p. 25). There are many who are of this opinion. Sharon DelMendo seemingly agrees with this school of thought, as
she writes that she thinks King's popularity can even take the liberty of republishing novels and adding "Complete and Uncut", putting some pages
in that may have been cut from the first printing of the book, and then still makes the best seller list (DelMendo, 1996). Bloom goes on to say in
his work that King has probably read and borrowed or as he says "hackneyed" almost all of his story ideas, as with the gypsy curse in Thinner (2007,
p. 26). And again Bloom and DelMendo are not alone in their thoughts on King. Greg Smith, in Midwest Quarterly, says because King's output of
work is so large, "the quality of his work overall tends to be uneven, exhibiting in its worst manifestations the two–dimensional stock characters,
superfluous narrative descriptions, and gratuitous scenes of violence typical junk horror fiction (2002, p. 12). The question then arises as too why

Essay Banning "A Child Called 'It'"
I am writing to you to protest the School Board's proposed banning of the book A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer. The book spent six years on the
New York Times best–seller list, was an international best seller, and received a Pulitzer Prize nomination. As an award–winning author, Mr. Pelzer has
shared his true–life story based on a childhood where he received physical and mental abuse by his alcoholic mother. A Child Called "It" brings our
attention to mental abuse that adults may inflict on a human being and in this particular case, a child. David's mother respects the family's dogs more
than she respects her own son. The dogs are fed every day, yet she attempts to starve David. Although David has two other brothers,... Show more

His mother treats him like a slave, giving him daily chores and unbelievably ruthless punishments. He has become inhuman to her as she refers to
him as "It." The only hope of survival relies on his dad, in God, or in a miracle. His story promotes the courageous human spirit and the determinate
to survive. This book does get harsh many times, but that does not mean people should shy away from it. Schools feel the need to ban books that
they do not think are appropriate for their children, but that is not their say to take the book away from everyone. Some schools tried to ban this
book because they felt there was a lot of profanity and violence. I do agree that both of those are in this story, but also profanity and violence exists
in the world today, so why should we try to act as if none of this exists. Many children in middle school and high school face this problem of abuse
and feel a comfort by reading these types of stories that they can relate to; it helps them to realize that they are not alone, and that there is hope.
Perhaps David's voice is the one that makes a difference for a young person facing such troubles. Taking such a book off library shelves sends the
wrong message to the public. It doesn't just suggest that what is in the book may be offensive to you or your board. It suggests that what is in the
book is not a valuable and valid topic of discussion for others to examine.

Essay on Pat Conroy: the Prince of Tides
Pat Conroy: The Prince of Tides Pat Conroy is a New York Times bestselling author that has written many renowned novels and memoirs. "He's not
much of a stylist, and his sense of humor needs work, but Pat Conroy has a nice wry perspective and a wholehearted commitment to his job." (CLC

his family. Pat Conroy has won many awards for his writings and continues to be on summer reading lists throughout the country. The most recent
award he received was in 2010, the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award for the Arts, South Carolina, Lifetime Achievement.

In an interview Conroy says that he has "come to trust the unconscious of the writer. That voice is coming from somewhere. That voice is asking
for admission for some reason. And that voice is asking for permission to be heard." (Malphrus 2) His ability to be inspired from within makes him
a great writer for all ages. His work gives people something to relate to whether its Tom Wingo protecting his sister Savannah, Tom's hate for his
father, or Tom's love of his mother. Conroy's novel was related to so well that it was made into a screen play in 1991. The Atlanta Journal states
"By far, Conroy's best work." While the Pittsburgh Press states, "A literary gem...The Prince of Tides is in the best tradition of novel writing. It is
an engrossing story of unforgettable characters.... Its description of rural South Carolina and the effect of that ambiance on those who live there is
masterful. Pat Conroy writes from the heart." (Staggs 1) The Prince of Tides has become traditional reading to schools all over the U.S. it is on
many summer reading lists because of its ability to relate to so many people. It has even been used in the justice program to give to prisoners. It has

The Glass Castle Analysis
People love books. They love how immersive a good novel can be, how it can allow you to escape into another world, another life, see the human
journey through a different person's experience. People love movies for largely the same reasons. Inherent in both mediums, and largely any form of
art, our need for escapism cannot be understated.
Oftentimes what works in one realm, fails in another. AndThe Glass Castle suffers considerably in the leap from the small page to the big screen.
Co–written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who made the exceptional 2013 drama Short Term 12, a movie which helped launch Brie Larson
into the spotlight, The Glass Castle documents the story of Jeannette Walls, whose memoirs provided the framework for a book which sold nearly three
million copies and stayed on the New York Times Bestsellers List for 261 weeks.
People love this book, in particular, and Walls gives a forthright, honest, and heartwrenching portrayal of a family torn apart by poverty. The author,
and her three siblings, were moved from location to location and raised by a mother, Rose Mary (Naomi Watts) who seemed more consumed by
painting and art then parenting, and a father, Rex (Woody Harrelson), whose alcoholism, depression, and abusive behavior, left everyone reeling.
Eventually the family reside in their father's hometown, in West Virginia, a place lacking plumbing, heat, and basic accouterments.
Cretton clearly sees inspiration and power in Walls' words and sees

Stephenie Meyer Influence On Religion
On December 24, 1973, Stephenie Meyer was born in Hartford, Connecticut and later raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Being brought up as a Mormon, she
was very religious and was thought of as intelligent and bright by almost every one of her teachers. In early childhood, she began to read authors from
Emily Dickinson to Shakespeare which influenced her award winning four–book series. Taking themes and similar ideas from the authors that inspired
her, Stephenie Meyer brought the love for vampire thrillers back to life in her series, The Twilight Saga.
Her major works are what make people gravitate towards her. In early June of 2003, Meyer dreamt of a girl and a vampire falling in love but he was

I mean, who doesn't love a good forbidden love story with vampires and werewolves? The main character, Bella, is a mortal girl who finds herself
attracted to Edward, a vampire who is always craving her blood. She's unaware he is a vampire in the beginning chapters of the first book but as
soon as she finds out, it's all mushy love and action from there. Edward is always trying to protect her, which what girl doesn't want that in a guy,
but while Bella loves that, she is also trying to be independent and make her own decisions. Meyer does an outstanding job of making the reader
feel what Bella is feeling throughout the entire series. I believe she does the best in New Moon when Edward leaves Bella because he thinks he is
hurting her and robbing her of her humanity. He feared she would one day want to become a vampire and didn't wish that for her, he didn't even
wish that for himself. With that thought, he left her at once. Meyer took the reader through how Bella coped with the loss of Edward and what she
did to keep her from thinking about him. People may not have gone through something this dramatic, but it's a relatable topic which is why people
gravitate toward this series. People also love to see the love story unravel with all the obstacles they have to face in order to be together in the end.
While reading and anticipating, the reader sees the two characters fall in love and grow up. I think the whole Twilight

Tom Clancy's Influence On American Literature
Throughout the years, many authors have contributed to American literature by writing meaningful poems and novels about their past. However, one
of these great authors rose up through his military and espionage–styled novels, changing and refining those genres forever; that author's name is Tom
Clancy. According to Italie, since childhood, young Tom Clancy has always been interested in the military and its history (Italie). He became a
famous author that influenced many writers that writes the same type of genre as his and was considered as one of the best writer of all time by
many. Later in his life, a number of his works were eventually turned into movies and video games that are still popular today. Tom Clancy's passion for

Because of Tom Clancy, many authors wrote novels about government secrets and military science, similar to Tom Clancy's work. Tom's fast

at the highest levels of that government. I wish I invented that genre. I didn't, Tom Clancy did," said Brad Meltzer. Meltzer also claims that Tom
Clancy created the character Jack Ryan as a reflection to all Americans. He wanted to show people a man that was affected by the Cold War and
wanted to do something about it, thus encouraging Americans to take action (Neary). In Powell's view, "He was somebody who really loved his
country and through his books, he demonstrated that love" (Powell). Some of Tom's novels was turned into movies and video games. Those who

Nelle Harper Lee stated that she never anticipated publishing another book. Well, turns out that Lee's new book, Go Set a Watchman, the initial
draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, is said to be even more autobiographical, and it is far less gratifying to Lee and others close to her. The book takes
place during the year 1957, which could lead one to believe that the woman living in New York City, returning to Alabama for a visit, could be
depicted as Nelle Harper Lee (Wood, 2015). Noted by Lawrence Wood as the original draft, Go Set a Watchman was possibly written without any
changes and bearing in mind the expressive thought that most novelists tend to put in their first work, the point Harper Lee was originally trying to
get across is not lost. Without reconstruction, it is very probable that Lee approved to the publication of Go Set a Watchman, on condition that no
journalistic modifications would be deemed necessary or made. In this way Lee could evade any and all efforts to compromise or weaken her original
concept of how racial relations took place in the

Quotes For Eat Pray Love

I have read the book named Eat Pray Love by Elisabeth Gilbert. The book has 346 pages and it was published in Great Britain 2006.
Elizabeth M. Gilbert was born on July 18 1969. She is an American author from Waterbury, Connecticut.
She grew up on a small family Christmas tree farm with no neighbors and no television. When Elisabeth and her older sister moved to New York they
entertained themselves by writing plays and books.
Elisabeth has been working as a cook, a waitress, and a magazine employee. Gilberts best known book is Eat Pray Love which spent from year 2010

Elisabeth is a very nice person, thoughtful and probably very funny. She has blond hair and is beautiful and has a curvy body. She loves food,

to and has finally found a balance in her life. I can't really find any things she dislikes because she is such a nice person.
I think the book was good. It was kind of dramatic. She told about her life while traveling which is probably really nice. The text was sometimes a
bit hard to read, but for most of the time it was really interesting. I wouldn't really suggest the book to a 15 year old girl, but maybe for plus 20
years old womans, because this Woman tells about her life and there is many things I don't maybe understand or that doesn't fit my life right now.
But I don't mean that the book wasn't good because it was really interesting and well written. I would give to the book a 5/5, but it was maybe a little
bit too mature to me, so I give it a

The Glass Castle Analysis
A Peek Into The Glass Castle Jeannette Walls's life growing up was rough. It wasn't this great adventure that her parents tried to make themselves and
their kids believe it was, yet it also had many advantages for the kids growing up independent, smart, well rounded and educated in many areas that
children might usually be sheltered from. The Glass Castle–– a memoir written by Jeannette Walls about her childhood growing up with parents that
lived unconventional lives, chasing their freedom. This book spent 261 weeks on New York Times Bestseller list which does not surprise me in
the least; it was a great read. I am usually not a fan of memoirs, but I enjoyed reading this one immensely. The style of writing is very descriptive,
which helps the reader create an imagine in their head and feel as if they are there with the characters. What I really appreciate is the fact that J.
Walls stays objective throughout the book, she doesn't add in her opinion about what she feels was right or wrong about her childhood. The tone of
the book makes me feel more like she is trying to make sense of it herself, to simply write it down, knowing that her life was quite unusual.
The conflicting emotions I experienced in admist on reading this book is what made it a good read. I could not help but empathise with all of the
characters. The children were clearly not at fault for any of the scary and disgusting things that happened to them, yet I could not completely hate the
parents either.

Jack : A Selfish And Evil Human
Robert Claro Professor Fernandez English 4 August 10, 2014 Jack: A Selfish and Evil Human The children landed uncharted island far from any
semblance of police, parents, or even teachers. The island was almost like the "Neverland" that Disney taught us about years ago, but without
Tinkerbell and a magical home with all their needs. Jack and the children in this adventure were in a heap of trouble. They were many, some
smaller and some bigger (littleuns and bigguns). These kids had to organize themselves into some sort of unit, to more efficiently find a way home.
That is where the trouble begins. When one or more humans come together, a hierarchy is always established. Similar to when one goes to a
restaurant and the waitress only addresses our father for the majority of the tables decisions. When this hierarchy forms, the decisions this leader
takes will always be classified as good or evil, and the society will be judged by the character at their forefront. In William Golding's novel "Lord of
The Flies", Jack Merridew is the character that takes leadership in the society and proves humanity is inherently evil by demonstrating human's: selfish
tendencies, competitive nature, and hopelessness. Jack stopped at nothing to control situations on the island. He would make decisions even when
none were there to be made. From the first interaction, upon arriving at Ralph's call he ordered his team to line up standing. That selfishness is one of

Children Succeed was translated into 27 languages and spent more than a year on the New York Times best
–seller list. III. SUMMARY OF
CONTENTS In How Children Succeed, Paul Tough presents how adverse childhood experiences (ACE) significantly affect a child's health and ability
to learn, whether caused by social, economic, or neurochemical means. Through numerous research studies and triumph (or failure) stories of actual
students, Tough shows that success rate is not primarily determined by cognitive skills, but with character skills. He reveals surprising ways in which

Many readers assumingly agree with what Paul Tough calls "the cognitive hypothesis": the belief "that success today depends primarily on cognitive
skills – the kind of intelligence that gets measured on I.Q. tests, including the abilities to recognize letters and words, to calculate, to detect patterns –
and that the best way to develop these skills is to practice them as much as possible, beginning as early as possible" (p. xiii). Tough is determined to
exchange this cognitive theory with the character hypothesis: the idea that character traits such as self–control, conscientiousness, persistence, and
self–confidence are more critical to achieving

Characteristics Of Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is a term often used to describe a person who owns and operates their own business, but the 2009 World Economic Forum report
describes it, "The pursuit of opportunity beyond the resources you currently control" Stevenson (1983, 1985); Stevenson and Jarillo (1991) and the
2008 European Commission published a framework definition derived from representatives from ETF, GIZ, ILO, UNESCO and UNEVOC that states,
"Entrepreneurship refers to an individual's ability to turn ideas into action...". But no matter how you define it, the most important skills, traits, and
characteristics needed to be successful are vastly analogous. Along with this week's reading, I conducted internet searches for the top characteristics,
traits, and skills for entrepreneurship and my findings were surprisingly similar. The most common result that I found was determination (willpower,
self–discipline, drive, motivation). In this submission, I will identify a successful entrepreneur and describe the their type of innovation or business,
what characteristics or traits they have, how they got started, and what they did in order to become and remain successful. In 2012 entrepreneur and
founder of the San Francisco–based apparel startup American Giant, Bayard Winthrop called a New York Times technology columnist, Farhad Manjoo

Competitive Sports Are Not Healthy For Kids
There has been a long disagreement about whether or not competitive sports are healthy for kids, I am here to tell you that they are not healthy. My
first reason is that, many kids in sports will experience too much stress. My next reason includes, that there are far too many injuries in competitive
sports. My third and final reason, is that athletes will have to give up many things that they love, in order to play competitive sports. As one could see
there are many reasons competitive sports are not healthy for kids. To begin with, many kids who are hardcore athletes have too much stress in their
life and will eventually burnout. First of all, ESPN showed that "Many kids start playing on teams before they even attend Pre–school". This proves...

up for sports because these kids won't have a lot of time for family time or even just down time. Lastly,Jacqueline Stenson MSNBC contributor said
"Have to sacrifice other interests, give up down time to be kids." This proves sports are not healthy for kids since they give too many things up
like, going to friend's houses, hanging out with their family or even just being a kid. Due to all of these reasons, one can see that competitive sports
are unhealthy for kids. In review, kids undergo so much stress that the stop participating in sports. Secondly, injuries are a huge factor in why
competitive sports are healthy for kids. Even so, many kids love sports but just keep going and need down time to be kids. With all of this it is clear

Reality Is A Perception That Organizes How People Relate...
Reality is a perception that organizes how people relate and organize the world. The Paracingulate sulcus is a structure in the brain that is associated
with our monitoring of what is reality and what is not. With out this monitoring system people end up with disorders such as schizophrenia. The New
York Times interprets the results of a study published by the University of Cambridge and University of Melbourne on the effects of the Paracingulate
sulcus on how people monitor what is reality. The Study, "A SpecificBrain Structural Basis for Individual Differences in Reality Monitoring," examines
a variety of research on the matter and presents the hypothesis that the people with out a Paracingulate sulcus will have poorer monitoring of
memory compared to people with a clear Paracingulate sulcus on either one or both sides of the brain. Even though both articles explain the exact
same research, it is interesting to see the many differences of the two articles. The article was chosen for more then its connection to cognition and
what is being studied in class. The article interested both participants in more ways than one. The idea of reality being a perception that changes from
person to person is not something people think about explicitly. It is merely by reading the article that one can take interest in the fact that each
person perceives the world a different way. Even more so, this perception can be altered by having, or not having, a specific structure in the

Rhetorical Analysis Of Frank Bruni's The Dangerous Safety...
"The Dangerous Safety of College" Rhetorical Analysis It is made clear that college students are quick to form an opinion which doesn't expand
knowledge and can show unintelligence. Many people, more specifically protesters, believe one side and won't open up and listen to the other side.
Frank Bruni, an Op–Ed Columnist for the New York Times and the author of 3 New York Times best sellers in 2015, 2009, and 2002, tells us that the
college protesters are wrong. His argument states that the college students need to be educated more on the whole subject because lacking education
can essentially lead to being biased or sticking with the one side you believe in. The students were protesting a guest speaker, Charles Murray, who is
identified as anti–gay, racist, and sexist. Although the guest speaker's beliefs are terrible, the students should hear what he has to say. Frank Bruni's
"The Dangerous Saftey of College" presents an effective logical appeal; however, it lacks clear and concise evidence along with not presenting an
emotional appeal to connect with the audience. Frank Bruni gives prominent evidence to back up his claim and referrers himself with the audience to
show that college protesters should remember the purpose of education, but where is the connection between the audience and Frank? A connection
draws the audience in and allows them to feel more understanding with the authors claim. In "The Dangerous Safety of College" the connection is

In the year 2003, Khaled Hosseini got his first novel, The Kite Runner published which created a worldwide popularity. The novel is about a young
boy, Amir, who struggles whose main aim is to establish good relationship with his father. The novel is set in Afghanistan and it also depicts the
political condition of that era.
It is a story of betrayal, redemption and class conflict and it is both emotional and thrilling at the same. It depicts the story of Amir and Hassan, the
best of friends, like brothers, and also experts in kite flying. The two young boys are the residents of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and at the
beginning of the novel, they are all set to win the local kite–fighting tournament–a popular Afghan pastime, and it is Amir's one hope of winning his
father's love. But just like the kites battling in the sky, war comes to Afghanistan, and the country becomes an extremely risky place.
In war, people are often compelled to make great sacrifices, and the young Amir himself does an act of betrayal, towards his best friend Hassan no
less, which chase him for the rest of his life. Amir and his father are forced to leave Afghanistan for America, and The Kite Runner becomes the story
of Amir's quest for redemption –making right the wrongs he committed all those years ago as a boy in

Media Bias In The Media
Media bias cripples our ability to find information about politics. Prejudice among different news sources, such as The Hill, NY Times, and CNN
makes it difficult to see beyond opinionated information and determine what's really true. I personally find it exasperating to read about or watch
the news and stay updated on current events, especially with controversial topics, with all the sifting between what's real, and what happens to be
false or skewed information due to beliefs held by the individuals in charge of covering these issues. From what I can tell by looking at the three
former sources I've chosen, the use of word choice among certain topics and their way of labeling certain groups or individuals varies, even if they
might be describing the same event or news story that's going on at that time.
To start, the New York Timesused an interesting choice of labeling Middle Eastern soldiers. "The United States military bombed Islamic State
fighters in Somalia for the first time on Friday, a sign that the air campaign against the group was expanding after recent battlefield successes
against the militants in Iraq and Syria." The New York Times also used the phrase "the extremists in Iraq and Syria". This came as a surprise to me,
seeing as the other two sources referring to these "Islamic State fighters" as simply "Terrorists". I assume the reasoning behind this is to avoid the use
of derogatory terms and label the group more as radicals under terms of religion, rather

Analysis Of The Glass Castle, By Jeannette Walls
Jeannette Walls's life growing up was rough. It wasn't this great adventure that her parents tried to make themselves and their kids believe it was.
However, the kids did grow up independent, well rounded and educated in many areas that children might usually be sheltered from. The Glass Castle
is a memoir written by Jeannette Walls about her childhood growing up with parents that lived unconventional lives–– chasing freedom. This book
spent 261 weeks on New York Times Bestseller list which does not surprise me in the least; it was a fantastic read. First of all, I am usually not a
fan of memoirs, but I enjoyed reading this one immensely. The style of writing is very descriptive, which helps the reader create an imagine in
their head and feel as if they are there with the characters. I appreciate J. Walls staying objective throughout the book, she doesn't add in her
opinion about what she feels was right or wrong about her childhood. As a matter of fact the tone of the book makes me feel more like she is trying
to make sense of it herself by simply writing it down. The conflicting emotions I experienced while reading this book is what made it a great read. I
could not help but empathise with all of the characters. The children were clearly not at fault for any of the scary and disgusting things that happened
to them, yet I could not completely hate the parents either. The father's character was complex like all of the other characters in this book. His troubled

Explaination Essay-Thinner By Stephen King

  • 1. Explaination Essay-Thinner by Stephen King Explanation Essay: Thinner Best Seller Upper Iowa University Abstract Stephen King is the author of over thirty novels, many short stories, several screenplays and other literature, and has remained on, or at least been a staple on the best seller list. Over his career of writing his literature has gained criticism and praise, depending on who you are asking. Whether or not the novel Thinner is best seller material again would depend on who you inquire with. I will not attempt to say whether or not this novel belonged on the best seller list at the time, but rather just to investigate into what was written and said about it and the author Stephen King. Stephen King Author of Thinner Stephen King, author of the novel Thinner,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some want to say that Stephen King is a modern master, but there are so many who question why he is. "I think this notion (modern master) is nonsense. After reading over a dozen books in which King seldom sidesteps clichГ©s, I think perhaps it is more likely that he just had very little original to say" (Bloom, 2007, p. 25). There are many who are of this opinion. Sharon DelMendo seemingly agrees with this school of thought, as she writes that she thinks King's popularity can even take the liberty of republishing novels and adding "Complete and Uncut", putting some pages in that may have been cut from the first printing of the book, and then still makes the best seller list (DelMendo, 1996). Bloom goes on to say in his work that King has probably read and borrowed or as he says "hackneyed" almost all of his story ideas, as with the gypsy curse in Thinner (2007, p. 26). And again Bloom and DelMendo are not alone in their thoughts on King. Greg Smith, in Midwest Quarterly, says because King's output of work is so large, "the quality of his work overall tends to be uneven, exhibiting in its worst manifestations the two–dimensional stock characters, superfluous narrative descriptions, and gratuitous scenes of violence typical junk horror fiction (2002, p. 12). The question then arises as too why Stephen King's work rises to the best seller list ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay Banning "A Child Called 'It'" I am writing to you to protest the School Board's proposed banning of the book A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer. The book spent six years on the New York Times best–seller list, was an international best seller, and received a Pulitzer Prize nomination. As an award–winning author, Mr. Pelzer has shared his true–life story based on a childhood where he received physical and mental abuse by his alcoholic mother. A Child Called "It" brings our attention to mental abuse that adults may inflict on a human being and in this particular case, a child. David's mother respects the family's dogs more than she respects her own son. The dogs are fed every day, yet she attempts to starve David. Although David has two other brothers,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His mother treats him like a slave, giving him daily chores and unbelievably ruthless punishments. He has become inhuman to her as she refers to him as "It." The only hope of survival relies on his dad, in God, or in a miracle. His story promotes the courageous human spirit and the determinate to survive. This book does get harsh many times, but that does not mean people should shy away from it. Schools feel the need to ban books that they do not think are appropriate for their children, but that is not their say to take the book away from everyone. Some schools tried to ban this book because they felt there was a lot of profanity and violence. I do agree that both of those are in this story, but also profanity and violence exists in the world today, so why should we try to act as if none of this exists. Many children in middle school and high school face this problem of abuse and feel a comfort by reading these types of stories that they can relate to; it helps them to realize that they are not alone, and that there is hope. Perhaps David's voice is the one that makes a difference for a young person facing such troubles. Taking such a book off library shelves sends the wrong message to the public. It doesn't just suggest that what is in the book may be offensive to you or your board. It suggests that what is in the book is not a valuable and valid topic of discussion for others to examine. ... • 3. Essay on Pat Conroy: the Prince of Tides Pat Conroy: The Prince of Tides Pat Conroy is a New York Times bestselling author that has written many renowned novels and memoirs. "He's not much of a stylist, and his sense of humor needs work, but Pat Conroy has a nice wry perspective and a wholehearted commitment to his job." (CLC 45). One of his best selling novels is The Prince of Tides. This novel depicts the life of Tom Wingo a southern boy and all the problems he faces with his family. Pat Conroy has won many awards for his writings and continues to be on summer reading lists throughout the country. The most recent award he received was in 2010, the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award for the Arts, South Carolina, Lifetime Achievement. Many of Pat Conroy's books include ... In an interview Conroy says that he has "come to trust the unconscious of the writer. That voice is coming from somewhere. That voice is asking for admission for some reason. And that voice is asking for permission to be heard." (Malphrus 2) His ability to be inspired from within makes him a great writer for all ages. His work gives people something to relate to whether its Tom Wingo protecting his sister Savannah, Tom's hate for his father, or Tom's love of his mother. Conroy's novel was related to so well that it was made into a screen play in 1991. The Atlanta Journal states "By far, Conroy's best work." While the Pittsburgh Press states, "A literary gem...The Prince of Tides is in the best tradition of novel writing. It is an engrossing story of unforgettable characters.... Its description of rural South Carolina and the effect of that ambiance on those who live there is masterful. Pat Conroy writes from the heart." (Staggs 1) The Prince of Tides has become traditional reading to schools all over the U.S. it is on many summer reading lists because of its ability to relate to so many people. It has even been used in the justice program to give to prisoners. It has also been on the 100 best summer beach books. • 4. The Glass Castle Analysis People love books. They love how immersive a good novel can be, how it can allow you to escape into another world, another life, see the human journey through a different person's experience. People love movies for largely the same reasons. Inherent in both mediums, and largely any form of art, our need for escapism cannot be understated. Oftentimes what works in one realm, fails in another. AndThe Glass Castle suffers considerably in the leap from the small page to the big screen. Co–written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who made the exceptional 2013 drama Short Term 12, a movie which helped launch Brie Larson into the spotlight, The Glass Castle documents the story of Jeannette Walls, whose memoirs provided the framework for a book which sold nearly three million copies and stayed on the New York Times Bestsellers List for 261 weeks. People love this book, in particular, and Walls gives a forthright, honest, and heartwrenching portrayal of a family torn apart by poverty. The author, and her three siblings, were moved from location to location and raised by a mother, Rose Mary (Naomi Watts) who seemed more consumed by painting and art then parenting, and a father, Rex (Woody Harrelson), whose alcoholism, depression, and abusive behavior, left everyone reeling. Eventually the family reside in their father's hometown, in West Virginia, a place lacking plumbing, heat, and basic accouterments. Cretton clearly sees inspiration and power in Walls' words and sees ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Stephenie Meyer Influence On Religion On December 24, 1973, Stephenie Meyer was born in Hartford, Connecticut and later raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Being brought up as a Mormon, she was very religious and was thought of as intelligent and bright by almost every one of her teachers. In early childhood, she began to read authors from Emily Dickinson to Shakespeare which influenced her award winning four–book series. Taking themes and similar ideas from the authors that inspired her, Stephenie Meyer brought the love for vampire thrillers back to life in her series, The Twilight Saga. Her major works are what make people gravitate towards her. In early June of 2003, Meyer dreamt of a girl and a vampire falling in love but he was always craving her blood. The main character, Bella, is a mortal girl who finds herself attracted to Edward, a vampire who is always craving her blood. She's unaware he is a vampire in the beginning chapters of the first book but as soon as she finds out, it's all mushy love and action from there. Edward is always trying to protect her, which what girl doesn't want that in a guy, but while Bella loves that, she is also trying to be independent and make her own decisions. Meyer does an outstanding job of making the reader feel what Bella is feeling throughout the entire series. I believe she does the best in New Moon when Edward leaves Bella because he thinks he is hurting her and robbing her of her humanity. He feared she would one day want to become a vampire and didn't wish that for her, he didn't even wish that for himself. With that thought, he left her at once. Meyer took the reader through how Bella coped with the loss of Edward and what she did to keep her from thinking about him. People may not have gone through something this dramatic, but it's a relatable topic which is why people gravitate toward this series. People also love to see the love story unravel with all the obstacles they have to face in order to be together in the end. • 7. Tom Clancy's Influence On American Literature Throughout the years, many authors have contributed to American literature by writing meaningful poems and novels about their past. However, one of these great authors rose up through his military and espionage–styled novels, changing and refining those genres forever; that author's name is Tom Clancy. According to Italie, since childhood, young Tom Clancy has always been interested in the military and its history (Italie). He became a famous author that influenced many writers that writes the same type of genre as his and was considered as one of the best writer of all time by many. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because of Tom Clancy, many authors wrote novels about government secrets and military science, similar to Tom Clancy's work. Tom's fast –paced and technology–heavy thrillers redefined a genre. "I, in my books, write thrillers that are full of government secrets that are researched with people at the highest levels of that government. I wish I invented that genre. I didn't, Tom Clancy did," said Brad Meltzer. Meltzer also claims that Tom Clancy created the character Jack Ryan as a reflection to all Americans. He wanted to show people a man that was affected by the Cold War and wanted to do something about it, thus encouraging Americans to take action (Neary). In Powell's view, "He was somebody who really loved his country and through his books, he demonstrated that love" (Powell). Some of Tom's novels was turned into movies and video games. Shields, Lee was not prepared for the volume of personal responsiveness gained and associated with being and writing a bestseller (neabigread.org). Up until this year, Nelle Harper Lee stated that she never anticipated publishing another book. Well, turns out that Lee's new book, Go Set a Watchman, the initial draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, is said to be even more autobiographical, and it is far less gratifying to Lee and others close to her. The book takes place during the year 1957, which could lead one to believe that the woman living in New York City, returning to Alabama for a visit, could be depicted as Nelle Harper Lee (Wood, 2015). Noted by Lawrence Wood as the original draft, Go Set a Watchman was possibly written without any changes and bearing in mind the expressive thought that most novelists tend to put in their first work, the point Harper Lee was originally trying to get across is not lost. Without reconstruction, it is very probable that Lee approved to the publication of Go Set a Watchman, on condition that no journalistic modifications would be deemed necessary or made. I can't really find any things she dislikes because she is such a nice person. I think the book was good. It was kind of dramatic. She told about her life while traveling which is probably really nice. The text was sometimes a bit hard to read, but for most of the time it was really interesting. I wouldn't really suggest the book to a 15 year old girl, but maybe for plus 20 years old womans, because this Woman tells about her life and there is many things I don't maybe understand or that doesn't fit my life right now. There was much controversy with The Catcher In The Rye. Within two weeks of being published the book was listed number one on The New York Times best –seller list. It stayed up on that list for thirty weeks. The Novel brought about three tremendous days of a life of a sixteen year old boy named Holden Caulfield. Holden was a smart kid however, just never put in any effort in to what he was doing. His careless actions is what deemed this novel from many schools. • 14. The Glass Castle Analysis A Peek Into The Glass Castle Jeannette Walls's life growing up was rough. It wasn't this great adventure that her parents tried to make themselves and their kids believe it was, yet it also had many advantages for the kids growing up independent, smart, well rounded and educated in many areas that children might usually be sheltered from. The Glass Castle–– a memoir written by Jeannette Walls about her childhood growing up with parents that lived unconventional lives, chasing their freedom. This book spent 261 weeks on New York Times Bestseller list which does not surprise me in the least; it was a great read. I am usually not a fan of memoirs, but I enjoyed reading this one immensely. The style of writing is very descriptive, which helps the reader create an imagine in their head and feel as if they are there with the characters. What I really appreciate is the fact that J. Walls stays objective throughout the book, she doesn't add in her opinion about what she feels was right or wrong about her childhood. The tone of the book makes me feel more like she is trying to make sense of it herself, to simply write it down, knowing that her life was quite unusual. The conflicting emotions I experienced in admist on reading this book is what made it a good read. I could not help but empathise with all of the characters. The children were clearly not at fault for any of the scary and disgusting things that happened to them, yet I could not completely hate the parents either. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Jack : A Selfish And Evil Human Robert Claro Professor Fernandez English 4 August 10, 2014 Jack: A Selfish and Evil Human The children landed uncharted island far from any semblance of police, parents, or even teachers. The island was almost like the "Neverland" that Disney taught us about years ago, but without Tinkerbell and a magical home with all their needs. Jack and the children in this adventure were in a heap of trouble. They were many, some smaller and some bigger (littleuns and bigguns). These kids had to organize themselves into some sort of unit, to more efficiently find a way home. That is where the trouble begins. When one or more humans come together, a hierarchy is always established. Similar to when one goes to a restaurant and the waitress only addresses our father for the majority of the tables decisions. When this hierarchy forms, the decisions this leader takes will always be classified as good or evil, and the society will be judged by the character at their forefront. In William Golding's novel "Lord of The Flies", Jack Merridew is the character that takes leadership in the society and proves humanity is inherently evil by demonstrating human's: selfish tendencies, competitive nature, and hopelessness. Jack stopped at nothing to control situations on the island. He would make decisions even when none were there to be made. From the first interaction, upon arriving at Ralph's call he ordered his team to line up standing. That selfishness is one of the ingredients that later help Jack ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Characteristics Of Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship is a term often used to describe a person who owns and operates their own business, but the 2009 World Economic Forum report describes it, "The pursuit of opportunity beyond the resources you currently control" Stevenson (1983, 1985); Stevenson and Jarillo (1991) and the 2008 European Commission published a framework definition derived from representatives from ETF, GIZ, ILO, UNESCO and UNEVOC that states, "Entrepreneurship refers to an individual's ability to turn ideas into action...". The New York Times interprets the results of a study published by the University of Cambridge and University of Melbourne on the effects of the Paracingulate sulcus on how people monitor what is reality. The Study, "A SpecificBrain Structural Basis for Individual Differences in Reality Monitoring," examines a variety of research on the matter and presents the hypothesis that the people with out a Paracingulate sulcus will have poorer monitoring of memory compared to people with a clear Paracingulate sulcus on either one or both sides of the brain. "The Dangerous Safety of College" Rhetorical Analysis It is made clear that college students are quick to form an opinion which doesn't expand knowledge and can show unintelligence. Frank Bruni, an Op–Ed Columnist for the New York Times and the author of 3 New York Times best sellers in 2015, 2009, and 2002, tells us that the college protesters are wrong. His argument states that the college students need to be educated more on the whole subject because lacking education can essentially lead to being biased or sticking with the one side you believe in. The students were protesting a guest speaker, Charles Murray, who is identified as anti–gay, racist, and sexist. Although the guest speaker's beliefs are terrible, the students should hear what he has to say. Frank Bruni's "The Dangerous Saftey of College" presents an effective logical appeal; however, it lacks clear and concise evidence along with not presenting an emotional appeal to connect with the audience. In the year 2003, Khaled Hosseini got his first novel, The Kite Runner published which created a worldwide popularity. The novel is about a young boy, Amir, who struggles whose main aim is to establish good relationship with his father. The novel is set in Afghanistan and it also depicts the political condition of that era. It is a story of betrayal, redemption and class conflict and it is both emotional and thrilling at the same. It depicts the story of Amir and Hassan, the best of friends, like brothers, and also experts in kite flying. The two young boys are the residents of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and at the beginning of the novel, they are all set to win the local kite–fighting tournament–a popular Afghan pastime, and it is Amir's one hope of winning his father's love. • 39. Media Bias In The Media Media bias cripples our ability to find information about politics. Prejudice among different news sources, such as The Hill, NY Times, and CNN makes it difficult to see beyond opinionated information and determine what's really true. I personally find it exasperating to read about or watch the news and stay updated on current events, especially with controversial topics, with all the sifting between what's real, and what happens to be false or skewed information due to beliefs held by the individuals in charge of covering these issues. From what I can tell by looking at the three former sources I've chosen, the use of word choice among certain topics and their way of labeling certain groups or individuals varies, even if they might be describing the same event or news story that's going on at that time. To start, the New York Timesused an interesting choice of labeling Middle Eastern soldiers. "The United States military bombed Islamic State fighters in Somalia for the first time on Friday, a sign that the air campaign against the group was expanding after recent battlefield successes against the militants in Iraq and Syria." The New York Times also used the phrase "the extremists in Iraq and Syria". This came as a surprise to me, seeing as the other two sources referring to these "Islamic State fighters" as simply "Terrorists". I assume the reasoning behind this is to avoid the use of derogatory terms and label the group more as radicals under terms of religion, rather ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Analysis Of The Glass Castle, By Jeannette Walls Jeannette Walls's life growing up was rough. It wasn't this great adventure that her parents tried to make themselves and their kids believe it was. However, the kids did grow up independent, well rounded and educated in many areas that children might usually be sheltered from. The Glass Castle is a memoir written by Jeannette Walls about her childhood growing up with parents that lived unconventional lives–– chasing freedom. This book spent 261 weeks on New York Times Bestseller list which does not surprise me in the least; it was a fantastic read. First of all, I am usually not a fan of memoirs, but I enjoyed reading this one immensely. The style of writing is very descriptive, which helps the reader create an imagine in their head and feel as if they are there with the characters. I appreciate J. Walls staying objective throughout the book, she doesn't add in her opinion about what she feels was right or wrong about her childhood. As a matter of fact the tone of the book makes me feel more like she is trying to make sense of it herself by simply writing it down. The conflicting emotions I experienced while reading this book is what made it a great read. I could not help but empathise with all of the characters. The children were clearly not at fault for any of the scary and disgusting things that happened to them, yet I could not completely hate the parents either. The father's character was complex like all of the other characters in this book. His troubled past could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
