Digestion is the process of breaking larger food particles into smaller particles that can pass through the plasma membrane. The digestive system is in
charge of this process. To begin, the mouth receives food, breaking it into smaller particles by chewing, a form of mechanical digestion with the teeth,
for absorption. The tongue aids in this process of chewing and swallowing as a muscular organ. Additionally, the salivary glands in the mouth secrete
saliva to help lubricate the food and begin chemical digestion with its digestive enzyme, salivary amylase. Also aiding in chemical digestion in the
mouth is mucin. When in the mouth, salivary mucins functions as a protective layer.
Once formed into a small rounded mass, called a bolus, the food passes through a sphincter, a muscular ring that regulates the size of an opening, and
enters the esophagus, a muscular tube leading to the stomach. No additional digestion occurs here. For the food to travel, it is lubricated with mucus
and moved by peristalsis into the stomach. At the end of the esophagus, at the opening to the stomach, is a sphincter. Once in the stomach, a J–shaped
organ in the upper left region of the abdominal cavity, the food goes through additional mechanical and chemical digestion. The churning action of the

takes the food into the oesophagus and by peristalsis moves it into the stomach. In the stomach, strong hydrochloric acid breaks down complex proteins
over a period of a few hours. The resulting mixture then moves into the small intestine, the start of which is called the duodenum. Here, bile from the

The digestive system is in charge of this process. To begin, the mouth receives food, breaking it into smaller particles by chewing, a form of mechanical digestion with the teeth, for absorption. The tongue aids in this process of chewing and swallowing as a muscular organ. Additionally, the salivary glands in the mouth secrete saliva to help lubricate the food and begin chemical digestion with its digestive enzyme, salivary amylase. Also aiding in chemical digestion in the mouth is mucin. When in the mouth, salivary mucins functions as a protective layer. Once formed into a small rounded mass, called a bolus, the food passes through a sphincter, a muscular ring that regulates the size of an opening, and enters the esophagus, a muscular tube leading to the stomach. No additional digestion occurs here. For the food to travel, it is lubricated with mucus and moved by peristalsis into the stomach. At the end of the esophagus, at the opening to the stomach, is a sphincter. Once in the stomach, a J–shaped organ in the upper left region of the abdominal cavity, the food goes through additional mechanical and chemical digestion.
