1. Assessment Objective:
• Define work.
• Measure the work done by gravity acting on a weight.
Criterion C: Processing and Evaluating
Maximum: 8
At the end of Grade 7 and 8, students should be able to:
i. present collected and transformed data
ii. interpret data and describe results using scientific reasoning
iii. discuss the validity of a hypothesis based on the outcome of the scientific
investigation
iv. discuss the validity of the method
v. describe improvements or extensions to the method.

Level descriptor
0 The student does not reach a standard indicated by any of the descriptors below.
1–2
The student is able to:
i. collect and present data in numerical and/or visual forms
ii. accurately interpret data
iii. state the validity of a hypothesis with limited reference to a scientific investigation
iv. state the validity of the method with limited reference to a scientific investigation
v. state limited improvements or extensions to the method.
3–4
The student is able to:
i. correctly collect and present data in numerical and/or visual forms
ii. accurately interpret data and describe results
iii. state the validity of a hypothesis based on the outcome of a scientific investigation
iv. state the validity of the method based on the outcome of a scientific investigation

iv. outline the validity of the method based on the outcome of a scientific investigation
outline improvements or extensions to the method that would benefit the scientific
investigation.
7–8

forms
ii. accurately interpret data and describe results using correct scientific reasoning
iii. discuss the validity of a hypothesis based on the outcome of a scientific investigation
iv. discuss the validity of the method based on the outcome of a scientific investigation
v. describe improvements or extensions to the method that would benefit the scientific
investigation.
2. ATL Skills:
Information Literacy Skills – Collect, record, and verify data; Process data and reports results
Creative Thinking Skills – Design improvements to existing machines, media, and technologies
Materials:
2 spring balance or force measurer meterstick calculator
2 objects of different weights (same material) string
Procedure:
As you perform the procedure, write down your observations right away under OBSERVATIONS.
A. Experimental Set-up 1
1. Hang one object on the spring balance or force measurer. From the floor, life the object to a
height of 1m. You have done work on the object. Get the reading.
2. Do the same with the second object.
3. To find the work done on an object, multiply the force needed to lift the object by the distance
through which it was lifted. Use the formula: W = fd.
4. Record data and results of computations on the table below. Note that the definition of work
applies to objects moved in the same direction as the force acting on them.
Object Force (N) Distance (m) Work Done (Nm)

3. B. Experimental Set-up 2
1. Now pull each object across the table through a distance of 1 m. Try to keep the string stretched
and parallel to the table surface as you steadily pull the spring balance. Read the scale as you pull
uniformly across the table.
2. Since you may not always get the same readings, make several trials and solve for the average
force reading. Record data and results of computations in the table below.
