Cold War American Brainwashing
Matthew W. Dunne's A Cold War State of Mind: Brainwashing and Postwar American Society,
Dunne attempts to reconsider the history of postwar America through the idea of brainwashing and
look at the mind–set the idea created. Very early in the novel he reminds the audience that this is not
a piece of work written to examine the legitimacy of the method of brainwashing to control minds.
Rather, he focuses on not only why brainwashing was so accepted by the American public, but also
how it had many generations of the United States thinking that their individuality was under attack.
The book spans from a time of external fears of the Communists using brainwashing techniques on
Americans, then shifts to where the fear turned to the state of American ... Show more content on

He uses magazine articles and various other books to sum up the effect the concept of brainwashing
had on the American public. In the years following the captivity and brainwashing of the soldiers in
Korea, there were many films that were released illustrating the fear of communist ideas infiltrating
American life. One of the examples Dunne used was The Fearmakers, he goes on to explain: "The
Fearmakers offers a riveting example of an emerging narrative in American popular culture and
illustrates how popular culture stressed the similarities between brainwashing and a number of
supposedly manipulative trends in domestic American society." The section goes on to talk about the
fear of hidden sexual imagery in comic books that may have been contributing to juvenile
delinquency. Dunne paints a clear picture in this section of the amount of terror that was put into
Americans using personal testimony's and research done by sociologists that add to the credibility of
the argument. The rest of the book brings the legacy of brainwashing and the fear it instilled in
Americans through personal testimonials and excerpts from books written by experts on the topic.
Dunne does a nice job of wrapping up the book and providing his closing

Brainwashing In 1984 Research Paper
The society we live in relies heavily on the presence of the media and the influence of other people.
In many situations it would be fairly simple for the government to brainwash a society into thinking
something had or had not happened. This brainwashing is depicted in the book 1984, where a
society has been captured by a government that decides every move and thought in their daily lives.
Both the world of Oceania and the world we live in now are heavily controlled by the media. Media
plays a major part in the way everyone thinks, talks, and remembers instances from the past. In
some situations the past is able to be changed if there was someone that took the time to sit down
and change every article that ever came out about the incident. If for instance the government
wanted to change a piece of history form over 100 years ago it would be simple for them. They
would just have to change it in books and videos to say what they want it to say and then eventually
overtime the memory of what had actually happened would die out with the older generations and
they would have successfully removed a part of history. This form of brainwashing can be used in
many ways, to forget something that did happen or to place a memory in someone's head of
something that didn't ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are forced to confess to things they did not do and to say things they know to be completely
untrue. The people have been brainwashed to believe scientific evidence is false and the only thing
that is fact is whatever the government tells them is true that day. In our society today I do believe
that the tools that were used to torture these people would work well in our society. People are very
weak in today's society I believe they would easily break under these

Brainwashing Youth : How Advertising Influences Children...
Brainwashing Youth: How Advertising Influences Children on Gender Images
For advertising companies, the topic of advertising to children is one that is very controversial and
could lead to a lot of debate on whether it is even ethical to do so. None the less advertisements
continue to be aired and targeted towards a particularly vulnerable group: children. At a young age it
is a critical time for children. They are not only developing their mental and physical capabilities,
but they are also developing their outlook on themselves and their own gender self–identity. An
untruthful and dangerous influence known as advertising could hinder and hurt a children's own
perception of gender. Advertising plays an important role in educating children and influences them
greatly. In Sut Jhally's "Image–based Culture: Advertising and Popular Culture" he argues that
advertising represses thinking and reasoning and favours feelings. In a perfect world information
would be told in an accurate and truthful matter. Unfortunately, in reality this isn't always the case.
You are not born a male or a female, gender is not decided at birth but rather something that
individual must decide for themselves. In Lynda Willer's "Warning: Welcome to your World Baby,
Gender message enclosed" Karyn warns that a person's sex role is decided in the very first seconds
of their lives from their family's influence. A child's identity as a male or a female is decided through
their parents and many other

Theme Of Brainwashing In Brave New World
What would a world be like if everyone was brainwashed? In Aldous Huxley's book,
Brave New World, he creates a dystopian world that people are controlled in. Huxley used political
and social issues within his book to create a theme of systematic brainwashing within a controlled
society. The author believes that the 1930's was a corrupt society to live in due to the
Great Depression. People were at their lowest and gave a lot up. He uses imagery and illusion to
show everyone what people should think.
In the beginning of Brave New World, the author of the book uses imagery to put an image into our
heads of a sexual exchange from everyone. In the first chapter the author creates an image of a
social interaction between the Director and Lenina ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So they started to do whatever they wanted, which means sleep with who they wanted.
In Brave New World, everyone was very dependent on drugs and alcohol. A drug called
Soma was taken all the time to make them have allusions and leave all their worries behind.
Huxley uses illusion to make people in the book take their minds somewhere else. Also, in the
1930's people started to be more dependent on drugs and alcohol to ease the pain from the
Great Depression. Mustapha made a claim about how Soma helped him, "What i had to suffer–and
not a gramme of Soma to be had. Only drink of mescal every now and then, when
Pope used to bring it." It eases their pain from all of their worries just like another normal drugs now
help others to forget about their worries. People also started taking pills like pain pills and other
experimental drugs to get high. Lenina starts taking Soma to get high and be "happy", "As soon as
they got back to the rest–house, she swallowed six half–gramme tablets of soma, lay down on her
bed, and within ten minutes had embarked for lunarity eternity." Drugs have gotten so bad that
people have to start taking them everyday because they're so use to it. They also have to take more
than use to because they have become so use to how one makes their body feel they have to take
two, "The return to civilization was for her the return to soma...as though you'd done something so

Example Of Bad Brainwashing
When the members of the Wave were subconsciously brainwashed they were out of touch with
reality and the horror of what they were doing. And most of this is an effect of too much loyalty.
They were not fully aware of what they were doing to the few kids who were smart enough to resist
the Wave like the anonymous 11th grader and Lorie. Like the Nazis the wave members started as a
little group which would expand and soon take over if not stopped. The Wave member's undying
loyalty to Mr. Ross like the Nazi party members undying loyalty to Hitler are both examples of
loyalty gone extreme and brainwashing taking over good people. After looking at all of this
information I feel our stance on this is that it is bad when you are so loyal that you ignore ... Show

Not thinking for yourself can make you do bad things. Some examples are dying your hair a
different color, doing something you usually wouldn't do, or hurting someone you love. Sometimes
getting things done faster can lead to consequences . One example of this is when the Nazi''s were
working together they killed a lot of jews which later led to remorse. You should never have lots of
faith in one person because people can and will make mistakes which is why they should always
have checks and balances. People need to take responsibility for their actions and not try to pass it
on to someone else. People use the fact that they were given the order to do something they they
shouldn't do.
In conclusion we feel that blind loyalty can be a bad thing. As we have pointed out blind loyalty can
leave a bad effect on people like when Robert feels left out again after the wave is over or after
Nazi's are relieved of duty they have remorse. It can also mislead people it to traps and hurt them
physically and mentally from what they do or say. There is a lot more blind loyalty than what we
covered in this essay but what we covered we think was most important. We hope that this essay
will inspire all of you to think for yourself and

Brainwashing Is Bad
Brainwashing is to make (someone) adopt radically different beliefs by using systematic and often
forcible pressure. People use brainwashing everywhere, everyday. It is used by the government,
politicians, News Sites, Commercials/Ads, Churches, Cults, etc. A person who is brainwashed
usually knows who their enemy is, a person under mind control has no idea they are being
controlled. There are many different techniques and strategies used on a brainwashed victim. In
advertising for instance, they use repetition, repeating a phrase, word, sound, or idea to a potential
customer. Brainwashing is never morally acceptable, it is making someone do something
unwillfully.
Now that you understand the basics of brainwashing, let's begin the real topic. ... Show more content

During the Korean War, Korean soldiers brainwashed captured American POWs. Some of these
prisoners ended up confessing to committing germ warfare (which they hadn't) and pledging their
allegiance to communism. Once the soldiers were freed, at least 21 would not return to America.
Even though 21 people were brainwashed, that number is out of 20,000 POWs. This shows that not
all minds can be brainwashed, if you have the mental fortitude you cannot be touched by these
methods of thought reform. Many scientists state that the Korean soldiers used "plain old torture"
which caused the American POWs to act the way they did. In conclusion, brainwashing will not
work on everyone, some people are more susceptible than others. Now that you understand the inner
workings of brainwashing, I can explain how we as a society, are brainwashed to believe many
different things. We are brainwashed to believe we need a certain car. There are not many
differences between automobiles nowadays, besides maintenance and the cost of the car itself. Car
advertisements brainwash us into believing their model will bring us joy, power, luxury (whatever
they want us to believe). This makes us feel the need to own their car and puts that thought in our
mind. In reality the vehicle won't bring us joy past the first couple weeks of the

The Holocaust: The Brainwashing Of Schools In Germany
During the early days of the holocaust, schools in Germany were training its students to conduct its
own philosophy. Techniques were used such as paintings, drawings, and literature to establish an
agreement that is based off of an expert's opinion. Anyone who disagrees with the teachers and staff
would be punished. As the students get older, that philosophy would turn into a lecture of political
and personal preference. Those students would lack the ability to change their way of thinking. That
lecture would then become a method of brainwashing.
In 1935, when the holocaust first began, it's purpose was to form a larger military through a draft.
Most students, workers, and other citizens were unaware how severe the brainwashing methods

Brainwashing In Brave New World
Aldous Huxley's Brave New World incorporates the political ploy of brainwashing and uses it to
promote the common belief. While the term "brainwashing" was coined during the Cold War era, it
still carries heavy implications and often suggests harsh techniques. Subsequently, brainwashing can
be seen as ridding a person of their own ideology and replacing it with a more suitable collection of
thoughts. Through techniques of mass education, thought control, and depravation of critical
judgment, the World Controllers in the Brave New World are brainwashing their citizens and
creating a perpetual state of dependency and confusion, serving as a warning for modern
civilizations.
The premature mass education of children exposes them to a predetermined ideology and imprisons
them to the immoral laws of society. Huxley illustrates this by describing the Brave New World's
process of hypnopaedia, a sleep–invoked teaching method. While this meets the Central Intelligence
Agency's criteria of brainwashing, "mass education," it goes beyond the bare minimal definition
(United States 3). Hypnopaedia takes advantage of the naïve and influenceable mind of young
children. By teaching children phrases such as, "I'm really awfully glad I'm a Beta" and "Gammas
are stupid," World Controllers are establishing what they consider the correct social hierarchy
(Huxley 27). This restricts the individual citizen's ability to establish their own beliefs and feelings
toward other people. When combined with

Brainwashing In 1984
The United States resembles Oceania due to the brainwashing and the destruction of families. The
US government brainwashes the children to follow their ideals. Families get broken down due to an
absence of a parent or an adult that fails to discipline their children. Both countries use techniques
such as brainwashing and destruction of the families to control the citizens because they have no
choice but to follow. Brainwashing is used to keep everyone from rebelling against the government.
In 1984, the women were to hold themselves back from sexual intercourse because "Chastity was as
deeply ingrained in them as Party loyalty... the natural feeling had been driven out of them" (Orwell
67–68). Since childhood, the female Party members were brainwashed about the importance of

with Big Brother!" in his sleep (Orwell 233). The government has so much control over the families
that the adults can not even trust their own children. In Kansas City, a teenager, Sarah, had a family
with many problems. She lived in a house "with no heat. No water. No lights. She read by
flashlight" (Adler 1), until her grandfather took Sarah and her brother in. She suffered many
hardships during her high school years but achieved many of the goals she set for herself at the same
time. Sarah was left alone when she was kicked out of her grandfather's house and had to move to a
dimly lit, low–income apartment with two teenage roommates spending nearly every night getting
stoned. To sum up, broken families caused problems within the families, making it easier for the
government to control

False Advertising Is Brainwashing Americans
Advertising is brainwashing Americans. Advertising is full of deceptive practices such as lying,
distorting facts, and presenting products out of context. These practices tend to cause negative
effects on Americans. Consumers are becoming insecure about themselves because of the deceptive
practices in marketing beauty products, children are being enticed to use unhealthy and
inappropriate products and have unhealthy behaviors, such as change in their attitude, and
Consumers are spending hundreds of dollars on products, that are falsely advertised. Deceptive
Practice, also known as False Advertising, is misleading consumers into making uninformed
decisions, when buying a product. The effect Deceptive Practice has on Consumers, is they're
wasting money on a company's product that can't provide what they're looking for. False Advertising
doesn't just affect Consumers, it also affects Businesses and their employees. Financial Loss and
broken trust is an example of what effects Deceptive Practice has on Companies. False Advertising
cost the companies money, if the ad is pulled. Also the Business can be charged with a fine, for the
current false advertisement and also future false advertisements. Unhealthy advertising, is a huge
influence on young children and teens. Companies, tend to target children on the internet, on apps,

Brainwashing In How Stuffs Work
There are many individuals who view brainwashing as a disease that spreads like wildfire. But what
exactly is brainwashing and how does it work? According to Merriam– Webster Dictionary,
brainwashing is defined as a forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up basic political,
social, religious beliefs and attitudes and to accept contrasting regimented ideas. According to
journalist Julia Layton, from How Stuff Works, "In the brainwashing process, the agent
systematically breaks down the target's identity to the point that it doesn't work anymore. The agent
then replaces it with another set of behaviors, attitudes and beliefs that work in the target's current
environment." But it's not like brainwashing is a brand new invention that ... Show more content on

After watching the film, I learned that there are certain things people use to brainwash an individual.
I also learned that you should stand up and fight for what you truly believe in. Learning how to
stand up to someone gives you strength and makes you feel like no one can mess with you. But
when you live in a country like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, or even Syria, it's not that easy. There are
consequences that follow when you finally begin to see the truth behind something bad. There are
some individuals who say that it's easy to not let someone brainwash or tell you what to do, all you
have to do is say no. But see, it's not that simple. Those individuals don't have to go through what
the individuals in countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Syria have to go through when it comes to
just saying no. If someone from one of those countries were to say "no" to their brainwasher, they
would get punished, tortured or even killed. So it's not really a win win. But what's even more
alarming, is that children are the ones who are also getting brainwashed, just like in the film. And it
doesn't matter if you're a child or not, if you don't obey or fall in, there's a certainty you may get
killed. It is important that individuals know brainwashing is serious and that it's not that easy to turn
away from. It's like a quote that Caroline Kennedy once said that I believe fits well into what I

Pascal's Wager Argument Analysis
In this essay, I will argue that Pascal's Wager gives a good argument and reason to the agnostic for
them to believe in the existence of God and become a theist. Pascal's Wager is based on a decision
of dominance and gives the agnostic an option to believe in God and therefore, receive salvation,
and the benefits that come with this belief or believe in him and loose nothing. There are a number
of arguments and objections that try to prove the Wager wrong, that the argument implies elements
of cult brainwashing for belief and that God would not be so egotistical to demand belief in him in
return for salvation, but I will argue the falsehood of these objections to prove that the argument
gives good reason for an agnostic to become a theist. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Groothuis, 1994) Pascal believes that in doing so it is a way of changing a person's existence for the
better. He therefore does not say that God demands belief for salvation but rather that through the
belief of God this salvation will be a benefit as the belief in the existence of God is not isolated from
the benefits of salvation that come with it. (Groothuis, 1994) One must first find the want for
salvation due to immoral actions and the need for forgiveness and thereafter will receive the benefits
of belief. Therefore, Pascal belief in the deity is necessary. One must therefore be brave enough to
make the wager to receive the grace (Groothuis, 1994) as faith is a different thing from proof, proof
is a human thing and faith is a gift from god. (Janzen, 2010) I think that it is simply not fair for
people to expect salvation and grace from their creator without any belief or praise in him. I think
this creator would be offended if people do not bother to believe in him but still expect salvation as
this does not seem like a fair trade. This therefore shows the objection that God would not be so
egotistical is proven false as the benefit of salvation is not isolated from a belief in God and does not
demand flattery for these spiritual and ethical

Examples Of War As A Method Of Brainwashing
War is a state of armed conflict between societies. It is generally characterized by extreme
aggression, destruction, and mortality, using regular or irregular military forces.
War brings about the death and suffering of many innocent civilians.
Unknowingly, leaders of war do not realise the mental destruction they cause on many bystanders.
In the end, many people are left hurt and scarred as they suffered from a situation at which they may
never recover from, as portrayed through the Holocaust. Many German Jews played victim to
Hitler's weakness. In order to receive full power, Hitler decided to wipe out the entire German
Jewish race not knowing of the effect it would have on those people.

Examples Of Brainwashing In Brave New World
Brainwashing in Brave New World Throughout Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel, Brave New
World, the reader is thrust to the forefront of a society merely based on consumerism, class loyalty,
and conventional principles. The motif of brainwashing is used in an effort to abolish individualism
throughout Huxley's novel. He does so by eloquently mirroring the beliefs of the totalitarian
governments of the past by establishing a government that brainwashes its own citizens to conform
to their beliefs. The "World State" uses hypnopedia as a tool to accomplish this goal of conformity.
They teach young children, their principles to reduce the probability of an uprising against the
tyrannical power. Conditioning, conformity, and propaganda are the instruments put in use by the
world controllers to instill desired characteristics into the populace of London, England from their
hatching to their death. Hypnopedia is used to instill consumerism, class loyalty, and conventionality
to keep society stable. Hypnopedia can be defined as, "instruction of a sleeping person especially by
means of recorded lessons" (Merriam). This technique is used in an effort to teach citizens moral
and ethical lessons, but in turn divides each class based on their artificial development. Each
member is groomed through this method of sleep teaching to act and think in similar ways as their
fellow class members. For example, the Directors machine uttered, "Alpha children wear grey. They

The Negative Effects Of Brainwashing
Summary: Brainwashing is an indoctrination that forces people to abandon their beliefs in favor of
another set of beliefs. Usually associated with the military such as secretive ways and boot camp,
political interrogation such as CIA and KGB, religion conversion such as "Jones Town Massacre",
and brainwashing attempts. Also, it is done by prolonged stress, to break down individuals physical
and mental defenses. Therefore, brainwashing took and it still takes a huge part of our lives. Human
beings are left in a risky situation with the current brainwashing techniques.

The religion movements were referred to as "cults". Usually, those movements affect the people who
are desperate in life and have no God, religion, and who are confused about their own identity. The
leader that contributes to the lives of those people will let them feel that they are hooked to God by
him and that everything he says is 100% true and that it is from God. By this, the people believe that
he passes the messages of faith from God but instead, he's passing his own religious ideas that may
lead to wars, the killing of people, and vicious crimes. Jonestown Massacre is one of the worst
examples in history for brainwashing for the religious conversions. People in Jonestown drank
Kool–Aid and died, but they thought that they made whatever God wanted them to do even if it was
a crime. But in reality, many people thought that the CIA was responsible for what happened that
day. Moreover, the Soviet Union blamed the American CIA for what happened and they had
documents and records that confirm their beliefs. And this was because of the idea of communism
that increased among the American people. Considering that the communists were responsible for

Brainwashing In Animal Farm
Brainwashing, a method used to revise certain beliefs and systematically amend attitudes. The
process requires torture, starvation, and a concept of confusion. These victims that undergo this
procedure are in the state of a mind that operates similar to robots programmed and wired to blindly
accept the deception that is forced upon their existence. Their existence, however, is similar to an
empty soul, meaningless to anyone. The satirical novel by George Orwell, Animal Farm expresses
the way how society worked during the Russian Revolution. It is represented with farm animals,
who take over a farm to run it for themselves. However, the outcome is worse from when they
started and end with a tyrannical, cruel, and selfish ruler. The animals are fed with lies and rumors
that twists their brains with turmoil and are left with a life that they never wanted. They each
impersonate different roles and aspects of the revolution. Boxer, a character from "Animal Farm",
portrays the part of the proletariat (working) class because he works harder no matter what, is
brainwashed to remain loyal, and he is uneducated, preventing him to fully understand situations.
Even though the pain, work, and distraught, Boxer always continues to work harder as he sees that
this will solve the problems. This can be demonstrated when Napoleon ordered the animals to be
slain because of their "betrayal". Boxer was struck with shock as the action of Napoleon seemed

Brainwashing And Connotation In Aldous Huxley's Brave New...
How can someone claim something is right if they've been conditioned everything they do must be
for the good of society? In the novel Brave New World, Aldous Huxley uses literary devices such as
diction and negative connotation to explore the issues of brainwashing, relationships, and drug
dependency and how these issues affect society. He relates these issues back to real life problems in
the 1930s like racism, sexism and the great depression. When
Huxley wrote his novel in 1931 it was near the beginning of a worldwide depression. However
many economic issues were on his mind because of what was happening when he wrote this novel,
Huxley was also very much aware of the social and scientific changes that were also happening in
the world. He uses these thoughts to create a society focused on these issues.
In Brave New World, Huxley emphasises on the idea of brainwashing by mentioning it over and
over again to establish how incapable people are to take care of themselves so someone has to step
in, aka the government. Huxley uses diction with words such as corruption and hatred to pull in a
negative feeling that people experience for not conforming to the ideas that everyone else in society
shares. Even when the people know that they're being controlled, they've grown a sense of longing
for the soma (brainwashing) and it just doesn't phase them anymore. The

Advertising: Modern Day Brainwashing Essay
Brainwashing and Mind Control are "best thought of as a series of techniques that are used over
time to shape a person's perception, cognition, emotions, decision making and behavior to such an
extent that they have lost their freedom of choice" (Mind Control Today). These techniques, once in
existence within authoritarian and totalitarian governments, are increasingly being practiced by
advertising companies and mass media. There are extensive similarities among the political and
economic standards that cause negative impacts on society, as a result of adopting these mind
control tactics. As Malcom X pointed out, "The media is the most powerful entity on earth, because
they control the minds of the masses".

Advertisers and marketing companies are mostly interested in subliminal manipulation because by
targeting consumers' subconscious mind, they can control their involuntary actions, emotions and
beliefs. The subconscious part of our mind is able to process around 20,000 pieces of information
per second, where as our conscious part can only cope with about forty. This function explains why
any subliminal message that our subconscious receives, can be received and responded to by
consumers without them ever being aware of it. This form of mind control can be very powerful if
used correctly, it could influence consumers to want and buy a product without their control
(Winder).
The result of mind control can be identified in persons who end up developing different beliefs and
values. Once this controlling process grows in multiple different ways for a long period of time, it
results in brainwashing. Interestingly enough, according to Steve Hassan, in brainwashing, the
manipulator is the hostile enemy, where as in mind control the manipulator is a friend, a helper, and
the targeted person is a willing participant in the situation. The goal of the advertiser, as a
manipulator, is to destroy the consumer's old identity and create a new one that holds the beliefs,
values, and ideas of the manipulator (Mind Control Today). We are often less

Brainwashing Totalitarian Nature In 1984, By George Orwell
Developing emotions such as compassion are arguably the most fundamental part of being human.
However, when a danger such as an over controlling government threatens to take those feelings
away, one truly appreciates the kindness and loyalty of humans. In 1984, George Orwell is able to
use O'Brien's deceptive, astute, and political nature in order to warn readers about the negative
effects that a brainwashing totalitarian government could have on human minds and emotions. At
the beginning of the novel, O'Brien is presented as a character who Winston Smith could trust with
his deepest thoughts. He is described as having a rather intimidating figure, with his burly physique
and thick neck. Despite the menacing appearance, he was believed to be "...a person that you could
talk to, if somehow you could cheat the telescreen and get him alone." (Orwell 13) However, the
kind nature was all simply a lie. For instance, in order to gain Winston's trust, O'Brien gives away
the address to his house, and turns off his telescreen. With these actions, O'Brien is able to trick
Winston into confiding in him with thoughts of rebellion. Even though Winston convinces himself
that O'Brien can be trusted, the truth is that he is a deceitful character ... Show more content on

With the back stab from this character, Orwell is able to show readers what a totalitarian government
could do to human emotions. In other words, O'Brien's character is a prime example that an over
controlling totalitarian government could make even the strongest of people lose touch with the
warm emotions that make up the fundamentals of being human. In conclusion, George Orwell's
portrayal of O'Brien's deceptive, astute, and political personality in 1984 was created to demonstrate
that a totalitarian government could create brainwashed monsters, rather than the caring and
compassionate people we see in today's

The Use Of Censorship On The Human Brain
Brainwashing refers to the techniques systematically used to alter a person's beliefs by using some
sort of pressure on the human brain. This technique can be shown in the period right before the peak
of the Cold War in the 1950s when the threat of Communism was becoming ever so real. By the
thousands, American citizens gained an allegiance to Marxist ideologies and anti–capitalist
doctrines. This can be shown in Communist government's use of censorship of material to
"brainwash" its people, especially subjects pertaining to capitalism. First used in the 1950s during
the Korean War, brainwashing was used to describe the methods on how Chinese Communists
influenced the actions of their prisoners. This can best be explained by ... Show more content on

The interrogator would then lightly question the prisoner, who would be unwittingly collaborating
with the Chinese, to make a list of some "problems" with America. This type of foreign coercive
persuasion used by the Chinese Communist party became more and more outright through the
prisoners' stay at the "re–education" camps. The physical impacts of Chinese brainwashing were
minimal, as the only intention of the Chinese was to convert as many people as possible to the
Communist orthodoxy. The concept of brainwashing was key as esteemed psychologist Edward
Hunter stated that "The United States of America is the main battlefield...and the people and the soil
and the resources of the United States" (Weiner 1). In this quote, he warned the American people not
to be influenced by the upcoming threat of Communist manipulation. His primary reason for making
this statement was his first–hand experience regarding Mao Zedong's China. The Korean conflict
brought no end to American paranoia as many free American citizens had been arrested and accused
of being "enemies of the state" in Communist China. Many of these convicted Americans then went
through a series of rigorous interrogations intended to guilt trip the person into thinking that he/she
was the aggressor to the victims in China or North Korea. Furthermore,

In a world surrounded by billboards, commercials and magazine advertisements, the grasp that the

the target in all situations is the same– Appeal to society in whatever way suits a company best. This

Literary Criticism Of Brainwashing In 1984
Literary Analysis on Brainwashing in George Orwell's 1984 The novel '1984' by British author, best
known by his pen name, George Orwell takes place in dystopian London during the mid–nineteen
eighties. The British Isles, together with the Americas, southern Africa and Australia, are all part of
the super state Oceania. In 1984 Oceania is one of only three nations left in the world, the other ones
being Eurasia and Eastasia. Of course, that is if you were to trust the information given by the
totalitarian, all–controlling and all–knowing governing party. The protagonist, thirty–nine–year–old
Winston Smith, is a member of the "outer" party and works at the Ministry of Truth. There he is one
of many who day after day work, ironically, with the falsification of historical events for the benefit
of the party. However, Winston secretly hates the party, but that is something he has managed to
hide from the "thought police" his entire life. It is not a small achievement either, since the
telescreens, televisions which also operates as security cameras, are everywhere, keeping the people
of Oceania under constant surveillance. As little as a facial expression at the wrong moment could
potentially give you away as a "thought criminal". To showcase this to the people, the party ... Show

Winston, as mentioned, works at the Ministry of Truth. His job could be described with the common
saying "history is written by the victors". Winston makes the party the inventors of the helicopter,
airplane and steam engine. He also makes their every prediction, the number of produced shoes
during a year for instance, line up perfectly with reality. This is done mainly by "rectifying"
textbooks and old Times articles. Original literature is sought up and destroyed by some party
authority. Because if the party, evidently, is always right, why would anyone assume that their views

The Conditioning of Brainwashing
The ramifications of both 1984 and Brave New World in brainwashing is best understood in its
dystopian society despite the fact it remains questionable in its existence. On the contrary for Brave
New World many "reviewers were disgruntled or disgusted with what they saw as unjustified
alarmism H.G Wells was downright offended". As both novels, take place place in the futuristic era,
both novels foresaw the loss of individuality within controlled states. Although, many similarities
exist between both Brave New World and 1984 they are more dissimilar than alike. Through, the
social and psychological of brainwashing and their conditioning I would discuss of how having a

The two governments of 1984 and Brave new world have different opinions of what sex is and how
it should be portrayed. In 1984, sex is an act solely in the confines of marriage in a secretive manner.
They all know that it occurs, yet it's not highly spoken. However, sex is treated as openly and the
most open topic in the novel Brave New World, where each person is a sexual partner to another and
their is no limits to who you have sex with. A character in Brave New World notes to Lenina how it
is "bad form to go on....like this one man." in other words its wrong. The fact that in the novel the
government creates these social norms despite for this society it is considerately strange if one is

The Act Of Brainwashing In Ira Leving's This Perfect Day
The act of brainwashing is involuntary reeducating oneself of basic beliefs and values. This concept
explains why totalitarian regimes have the ability to control a government using science. In Ira
Leving's This Perfect Day, a story about a futuristic dystopia, drug tranquilizers are inserted monthly
in each person's body. The purpose of this narcotic is to force people to behave in a particular
manner. With the drugs in effect, everyone will remain satisfied with life, disregarding if this is how
they personally want to live. The act of choice is taught to be a manifestation of life because that is
what the drugs encourage. This allows the leader to control everyone's thoughts and beliefs so they
do not rebel against who is in opposition.

Teachers Brainwashing Analysis
How do you interpret my colleague's meaning?
There are many controversies on whether teachers should or should not give their point of view in
an argument. Some believe that expressing their views would lead to brainwashing. While others
believe that it would lead to an interesting conversation. The author of the quote implies that
students should build strong opinions on their own rather than teachers brainwashing them.
Moreover, it is the student's responsibilities to "instill strong opinions" and teachers shouldn't
interfere with student's choice. But, question why they choose what they choose. For this argument,
I believe Fish would agree with the author of the quote. However, one thing that sets Fish apart is

The Non-Scientific Concept Of Brainwashing In 1984 By...
What exactly is brainwashing? One may say it is the manipulation of the mind. As a matter of fact,
"brainwashing is a non–scientific concept that the human mind can be altered or controlled by
certain psychological techniques" (Wikipedia). The concept of brainwashing was highly debated in
the 20th century regarding if reconditioning the brain was possible; many argued that it was possible
due to the incidents in the Korean War. However, there is no scientific proof that brainwashing (a
theoretical form of mind control) exists or is even possible. The concept of mind control is quite
evident in the novel, 1984. 1984 follows the life of Winston Smith, an undeceived Outer Party
member in Oceania, and his attempts to retaliate against the manipulative government, Big Brother.
To Winston, Big Brother is the doctrine of manipulation, propaganda, and totalitarianism. Although
this may be true, the majority of the citizens continues to follow Big Brother unconditionally.
George Orwell's cautionary tale, 1984, depicts that humans and citizen of Oceania are easily
manipulated into doing the government's bidding. Furthermore, both 1984 and 21st century's
bureaucracy controls its citizens by the use of Thought Police, propaganda and language. More
importantly, the government does this in order to control citizens to remain in power forever. A
human's most powerful weapon is its thoughts. Thoughts become words, the word becomes actions
and actions lead to the downfall of dictatorships,

Eric Blair wrote the novel 1984 under the pseudonym George Orwell. The original title of 1984 was
The Last Man in Europe, however, the title was changed for unknown purposes. It has been
speculated that the change in title was done because it was a mere reversal of the last two digits of
the year in which it was written. The novel was first received with conflicting acclamations and
criticisms. Those who provided acclamation for the novel believed that it portrayed the impending
possibility of the future and what it might bring. Some reviewers, however, disliked its dystopian

Love and obedience can be shown for no other. To ensure that all the people of Oceania completely
devote themselves to Big Brother many check systems are put in place. These include telescreens
and the Thought Police. Telescreens were cameras and televisions which were used to watch the
people at all times. The Thought Police, who were indistinguishable from everyday citizens, were
present to capture anyone they suspected to be a thought criminal. Thought criminals were any
Oceania citizens that were suspected of conspiring against Big Brother or The Party. Another
activity that The Party established to instigate love for Big Brother was the Two Minute Hate. This
endeavour created feelings of hatred that were steered toward a certain group of people called
thought criminals. When first published, 1984 was viewed as an absurdly fictional novel. Readers
thought that the ideas presented were exaggerated and would never be reality. However, it is
exceedingly evident that it is no longer such a stretch of the imagination. In many places around the
world, small and seemingly insignificant changes are being made that signify a slide toward
totalitarianism. The first practice that makes this change seem apparent in the future is the use of
hidden surveillance cameras. These seem to be consistent with the telescreens used in the novel.

from fear of the government. During an interview with Jeon Geum–ju by Anna Fifield from The

Comparing North Korea to China, he realized that they had been brainwashed. When describing his

enemy aka people who were living in paradise because they had money and land. He recalls many
time when people would be sent to prison because of saying a "wrong" word. A common saying,
"there is an ear, even on the wall" If the people know that there is a punishment by the government
for their wrongful actions, they most likely will not commit that act as a common saying amongst
the people was "there is an ear, even on the wall." Because of this fear and the brainwashing at a
young age, it is common sense for North Koreans to have genuine faith in the great leader. Some
people might say that it's not fear or brainwashing rather that the brainwashing is just North Korea's
unique way of teaching. Brainwashing no matter the country should not occur. Yes, they should
learn about their leader, but it should not be forced upon them and take up almost the majority of

Creative Response On Brainwashing
For my creative response I chose to do a collage. The theme I selected for my creative piece is
indoctrination also known as brainwashing. I chose to do a collage because I think pictures can be
more powerful than words when communicating or trying to express something to someone. A
picture is a best way to explain that it conveys more message than words. As my creative piece is
based on World War 2, the images I use in the collage will show a clear message on what I'm trying
to express through my work. The main idea I have incorporated in my collage is brainwashing. As it
is one of the major things that 'The Wave' focus on. Brainwashing played an important role in the

world learned its lesson. It'll never happen again" (Rhue 1981 pg.19). But the book proves that even

the types of media consumed have caused an evolutional brainwashing. Most people under 35 spend
their time on social media while their parents are still reading newspapers or experiencing the

accordance with real world issues. The layouts of newspapers dictate real world events by getting
people out from in front of a computer screen and interacting with news as it happens around them,

The article then proceeds with a brief history of how our views of cleanliness came to be. We
received these views from the ancient Greeks in which we were shown that the evil people, Furies,
were filthy; cleanliness was used to represent the Gods, which explains the phrase "cleanliness is

Brainwashing could be explained through two opposite claims: First, by social traditions that have
been victims of authoritarian regimes, and second, by political opponents responding to certain

of brainwashing or thought reform. Reasons to why brainwashing is an inaccurate phrase is because,
prisoners of war tend to claim to have been brainwashed in order not to be held responsible for

war against the soviet union and communist nations, "Brainwashing, with the even more sinister

The brainwashing concept was first introduced by the CIA propaganda specialist. Physiologists

Cold War American Brainwashing

  • 1. Cold War American Brainwashing Matthew W. Dunne's A Cold War State of Mind: Brainwashing and Postwar American Society, Dunne attempts to reconsider the history of postwar America through the idea of brainwashing and look at the mind–set the idea created. Very early in the novel he reminds the audience that this is not a piece of work written to examine the legitimacy of the method of brainwashing to control minds. Rather, he focuses on not only why brainwashing was so accepted by the American public, but also how it had many generations of the United States thinking that their individuality was under attack. The book spans from a time of external fears of the Communists using brainwashing techniques on Americans, then shifts to where the fear turned to the state of American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He uses magazine articles and various other books to sum up the effect the concept of brainwashing had on the American public. In the years following the captivity and brainwashing of the soldiers in Korea, there were many films that were released illustrating the fear of communist ideas infiltrating American life. One of the examples Dunne used was The Fearmakers, he goes on to explain: "The Fearmakers offers a riveting example of an emerging narrative in American popular culture and illustrates how popular culture stressed the similarities between brainwashing and a number of supposedly manipulative trends in domestic American society." The section goes on to talk about the fear of hidden sexual imagery in comic books that may have been contributing to juvenile delinquency. Dunne paints a clear picture in this section of the amount of terror that was put into Americans using personal testimony's and research done by sociologists that add to the credibility of the argument. The rest of the book brings the legacy of brainwashing and the fear it instilled in Americans through personal testimonials and excerpts from books written by experts on the topic. Dunne does a nice job of wrapping up the book and providing his closing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Brainwashing In 1984 Research Paper The society we live in relies heavily on the presence of the media and the influence of other people. In many situations it would be fairly simple for the government to brainwash a society into thinking something had or had not happened. This brainwashing is depicted in the book 1984, where a society has been captured by a government that decides every move and thought in their daily lives. Both the world of Oceania and the world we live in now are heavily controlled by the media. Media plays a major part in the way everyone thinks, talks, and remembers instances from the past. In some situations the past is able to be changed if there was someone that took the time to sit down and change every article that ever came out about the incident. If for instance the government wanted to change a piece of history form over 100 years ago it would be simple for them. They would just have to change it in books and videos to say what they want it to say and then eventually overtime the memory of what had actually happened would die out with the older generations and they would have successfully removed a part of history. This form of brainwashing can be used in many ways, to forget something that did happen or to place a memory in someone's head of something that didn't ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are forced to confess to things they did not do and to say things they know to be completely untrue. The people have been brainwashed to believe scientific evidence is false and the only thing that is fact is whatever the government tells them is true that day. • 5. Brainwashing Youth : How Advertising Influences Children... Brainwashing Youth: How Advertising Influences Children on Gender Images For advertising companies, the topic of advertising to children is one that is very controversial and could lead to a lot of debate on whether it is even ethical to do so. None the less advertisements continue to be aired and targeted towards a particularly vulnerable group: children. At a young age it is a critical time for children. They are not only developing their mental and physical capabilities, but they are also developing their outlook on themselves and their own gender self–identity. An untruthful and dangerous influence known as advertising could hinder and hurt a children's own perception of gender. Advertising plays an important role in educating children and influences them greatly. In Sut Jhally's "Image–based Culture: Advertising and Popular Culture" he argues that advertising represses thinking and reasoning and favours feelings. In a perfect world information would be told in an accurate and truthful matter. Unfortunately, in reality this isn't always the case. You are not born a male or a female, gender is not decided at birth but rather something that individual must decide for themselves. In Lynda Willer's "Warning: Welcome to your World Baby, Gender message enclosed" Karyn warns that a person's sex role is decided in the very first seconds of their lives from their family's influence. A child's identity as a male or a female is decided through their parents and many other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Theme Of Brainwashing In Brave New World What would a world be like if everyone was brainwashed? In Aldous Huxley's book, Brave New World, he creates a dystopian world that people are controlled in. Huxley used political and social issues within his book to create a theme of systematic brainwashing within a controlled society. The author believes that the 1930's was a corrupt society to live in due to the Great Depression. People were at their lowest and gave a lot up. He uses imagery and illusion to show everyone what people should think. In the beginning of Brave New World, the author of the book uses imagery to put an image into our heads of a sexual exchange from everyone. In the first chapter the author creates an image of a social interaction between the Director and Lenina ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So they started to do whatever they wanted, which means sleep with who they wanted. In Brave New World, everyone was very dependent on drugs and alcohol. A drug called Soma was taken all the time to make them have allusions and leave all their worries behind. Huxley uses illusion to make people in the book take their minds somewhere else. Also, in the 1930's people started to be more dependent on drugs and alcohol to ease the pain from the Great Depression. Mustapha made a claim about how Soma helped him, "What i had to suffer–and not a gramme of Soma to be had. Only drink of mescal every now and then, when Pope used to bring it." It eases their pain from all of their worries just like another normal drugs now help others to forget about their worries. People also started taking pills like pain pills and other experimental drugs to get high. Lenina starts taking Soma to get high and be "happy", "As soon as they got back to the rest–house, she swallowed six half–gramme tablets of soma, lay down on her bed, and within ten minutes had embarked for lunarity eternity." Drugs have gotten so bad that people have to start taking them everyday because they're so use to it. They also have to take more than use to because they have become so use to how one makes their body feel they have to take two, "The return to civilization was for her the return to soma...as though you'd done something so shamefully anti–social that you could never hold up your ... • 9. Example Of Bad Brainwashing When the members of the Wave were subconsciously brainwashed they were out of touch with reality and the horror of what they were doing. And most of this is an effect of too much loyalty. They were not fully aware of what they were doing to the few kids who were smart enough to resist the Wave like the anonymous 11th grader and Lorie. Like the Nazis the wave members started as a little group which would expand and soon take over if not stopped. The Wave member's undying loyalty to Mr. Ross like the Nazi party members undying loyalty to Hitler are both examples of loyalty gone extreme and brainwashing taking over good people. After looking at all of this information I feel our stance on this is that it is bad when you are so loyal that you ignore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not thinking for yourself can make you do bad things. Some examples are dying your hair a different color, doing something you usually wouldn't do, or hurting someone you love. Sometimes getting things done faster can lead to consequences . One example of this is when the Nazi''s were working together they killed a lot of jews which later led to remorse. You should never have lots of faith in one person because people can and will make mistakes which is why they should always have checks and balances. People need to take responsibility for their actions and not try to pass it on to someone else. People use the fact that they were given the order to do something they they shouldn't do. In conclusion we feel that blind loyalty can be a bad thing. As we have pointed out blind loyalty can leave a bad effect on people like when Robert feels left out again after the wave is over or after Nazi's are relieved of duty they have remorse. It can also mislead people it to traps and hurt them physically and mentally from what they do or say. There is a lot more blind loyalty than what we covered in this essay but what we covered we think was most important. We hope that this essay will inspire all of you to think for yourself and ... • 11. Brainwashing Is Bad Brainwashing is to make (someone) adopt radically different beliefs by using systematic and often forcible pressure. People use brainwashing everywhere, everyday. It is used by the government, politicians, News Sites, Commercials/Ads, Churches, Cults, etc. A person who is brainwashed usually knows who their enemy is, a person under mind control has no idea they are being controlled. There are many different techniques and strategies used on a brainwashed victim. In advertising for instance, they use repetition, repeating a phrase, word, sound, or idea to a potential customer. Brainwashing is never morally acceptable, it is making someone do something unwillfully. Now that you understand the basics of brainwashing, let's begin the real topic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the Korean War, Korean soldiers brainwashed captured American POWs. Some of these prisoners ended up confessing to committing germ warfare (which they hadn't) and pledging their allegiance to communism. Once the soldiers were freed, at least 21 would not return to America. Even though 21 people were brainwashed, that number is out of 20,000 POWs. This shows that not all minds can be brainwashed, if you have the mental fortitude you cannot be touched by these methods of thought reform. Many scientists state that the Korean soldiers used "plain old torture" which caused the American POWs to act the way they did. In conclusion, brainwashing will not work on everyone, some people are more susceptible than others. Now that you understand the inner workings of brainwashing, I can explain how we as a society, are brainwashed to believe many different things. We are brainwashed to believe we need a certain car. There are not many differences between automobiles nowadays, besides maintenance and the cost of the car itself. Car advertisements brainwash us into believing their model will bring us joy, power, luxury (whatever they want us to believe). This makes us feel the need to own their car and puts that thought in our mind. In reality the vehicle won't bring us joy past the first couple weeks of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Holocaust: The Brainwashing Of Schools In Germany During the early days of the holocaust, schools in Germany were training its students to conduct its own philosophy. Techniques were used such as paintings, drawings, and literature to establish an agreement that is based off of an expert's opinion. Anyone who disagrees with the teachers and staff would be punished. As the students get older, that philosophy would turn into a lecture of political and personal preference. Those students would lack the ability to change their way of thinking. That lecture would then become a method of brainwashing. In 1935, when the holocaust first began, it's purpose was to form a larger military through a draft. Most students, workers, and other citizens were unaware how severe the brainwashing methods ... • 15. Brainwashing In Brave New World Aldous Huxley's Brave New World incorporates the political ploy of brainwashing and uses it to promote the common belief. While the term "brainwashing" was coined during the Cold War era, it still carries heavy implications and often suggests harsh techniques. Subsequently, brainwashing can be seen as ridding a person of their own ideology and replacing it with a more suitable collection of thoughts. Through techniques of mass education, thought control, and depravation of critical judgment, the World Controllers in the Brave New World are brainwashing their citizens and creating a perpetual state of dependency and confusion, serving as a warning for modern civilizations. The premature mass education of children exposes them to a predetermined ideology and imprisons them to the immoral laws of society. Huxley illustrates this by describing the Brave New World's process of hypnopaedia, a sleep–invoked teaching method. While this meets the Central Intelligence Agency's criteria of brainwashing, "mass education," it goes beyond the bare minimal definition (United States 3). Hypnopaedia takes advantage of the naïve and influenceable mind of young children. By teaching children phrases such as, "I'm really awfully glad I'm a Beta" and "Gammas are stupid," World Controllers are establishing what they consider the correct social hierarchy (Huxley 27). This restricts the individual citizen's ability to establish their own beliefs and feelings toward other people. When combined with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Brainwashing In 1984 The United States resembles Oceania due to the brainwashing and the destruction of families. The US government brainwashes the children to follow their ideals. Families get broken down due to an absence of a parent or an adult that fails to discipline their children. Both countries use techniques such as brainwashing and destruction of the families to control the citizens because they have no choice but to follow. Brainwashing is used to keep everyone from rebelling against the government. In 1984, the women were to hold themselves back from sexual intercourse because "Chastity was as deeply ingrained in them as Party loyalty... the natural feeling had been driven out of them" (Orwell 67–68). The government has so much control over the families that the adults can not even trust their own children. In Kansas City, a teenager, Sarah, had a family with many problems. She lived in a house "with no heat. No water. No lights. She read by flashlight" (Adler 1), until her grandfather took Sarah and her brother in. She suffered many hardships during her high school years but achieved many of the goals she set for herself at the same time. • 19. False Advertising Is Brainwashing Americans Advertising is brainwashing Americans. Advertising is full of deceptive practices such as lying, distorting facts, and presenting products out of context. These practices tend to cause negative effects on Americans. Consumers are becoming insecure about themselves because of the deceptive practices in marketing beauty products, children are being enticed to use unhealthy and inappropriate products and have unhealthy behaviors, such as change in their attitude, and Consumers are spending hundreds of dollars on products, that are falsely advertised. Deceptive Practice, also known as False Advertising, is misleading consumers into making uninformed decisions, when buying a product. The effect Deceptive Practice has on Consumers, is they're wasting money on a company's product that can't provide what they're looking for. False Advertising doesn't just affect Consumers, it also affects Businesses and their employees. Financial Loss and broken trust is an example of what effects Deceptive Practice has on Companies. • 21. Brainwashing In How Stuffs Work There are many individuals who view brainwashing as a disease that spreads like wildfire. But what exactly is brainwashing and how does it work? According to Merriam– Webster Dictionary, brainwashing is defined as a forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up basic political, social, religious beliefs and attitudes and to accept contrasting regimented ideas. According to journalist Julia Layton, from How Stuff Works, "In the brainwashing process, the agent systematically breaks down the target's identity to the point that it doesn't work anymore. The agent then replaces it with another set of behaviors, attitudes and beliefs that work in the target's current environment." But it's not like brainwashing is a brand new invention that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After watching the film, I learned that there are certain things people use to brainwash an individual. I also learned that you should stand up and fight for what you truly believe in. Learning how to stand up to someone gives you strength and makes you feel like no one can mess with you. But when you live in a country like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, or even Syria, it's not that easy. There are consequences that follow when you finally begin to see the truth behind something bad. There are some individuals who say that it's easy to not let someone brainwash or tell you what to do, all you have to do is say no. But see, it's not that simple. Those individuals don't have to go through what the individuals in countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Syria have to go through when it comes to just saying no. If someone from one of those countries were to say "no" to their brainwasher, they would get punished, tortured or even killed. So it's not really a win win. But what's even more alarming, is that children are the ones who are also getting brainwashed, just like in the film. And it doesn't matter if you're a child or not, if you don't obey or fall in, there's a certainty you may get killed. It is important that individuals know brainwashing is serious and that it's not that easy to turn away from. It's like a quote that Caroline Kennedy once said that I believe fits well into what I learned, "It is not easy to stand up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Pascal's Wager Argument Analysis In this essay, I will argue that Pascal's Wager gives a good argument and reason to the agnostic for them to believe in the existence of God and become a theist. Pascal's Wager is based on a decision of dominance and gives the agnostic an option to believe in God and therefore, receive salvation, and the benefits that come with this belief or believe in him and loose nothing. There are a number of arguments and objections that try to prove the Wager wrong, that the argument implies elements of cult brainwashing for belief and that God would not be so egotistical to demand belief in him in return for salvation, but I will argue the falsehood of these objections to prove that the argument gives good reason for an agnostic to become a theist. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Groothuis, 1994) Pascal believes that in doing so it is a way of changing a person's existence for the better. He therefore does not say that God demands belief for salvation but rather that through the belief of God this salvation will be a benefit as the belief in the existence of God is not isolated from the benefits of salvation that come with it. (Groothuis, 1994) One must first find the want for salvation due to immoral actions and the need for forgiveness and thereafter will receive the benefits of belief. Therefore, Pascal belief in the deity is necessary. One must therefore be brave enough to make the wager to receive the grace (Groothuis, 1994) as faith is a different thing from proof, proof is a human thing and faith is a gift from god. (Janzen, 2010) I think that it is simply not fair for people to expect salvation and grace from their creator without any belief or praise in him. I think this creator would be offended if people do not bother to believe in him but still expect salvation as this does not seem like a fair trade. This therefore shows the objection that God would not be so egotistical is proven false as the benefit of salvation is not isolated from a belief in God and does not demand flattery for these spiritual and ethical ... • 27. Examples Of Brainwashing In Brave New World Brainwashing in Brave New World Throughout Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel, Brave New World, the reader is thrust to the forefront of a society merely based on consumerism, class loyalty, and conventional principles. The motif of brainwashing is used in an effort to abolish individualism throughout Huxley's novel. He does so by eloquently mirroring the beliefs of the totalitarian governments of the past by establishing a government that brainwashes its own citizens to conform to their beliefs. The "World State" uses hypnopedia as a tool to accomplish this goal of conformity. They teach young children, their principles to reduce the probability of an uprising against the tyrannical power. Conditioning, conformity, and propaganda are the instruments put in use by the world controllers to instill desired characteristics into the populace of London, England from their hatching to their death. Hypnopedia is used to instill consumerism, class loyalty, and conventionality to keep society stable. Hypnopedia can be defined as, "instruction of a sleeping person especially by means of recorded lessons" (Merriam). This technique is used in an effort to teach citizens moral and ethical lessons, but in turn divides each class based on their artificial development. Each member is groomed through this method of sleep teaching to act and think in similar ways as their fellow class members. For example, the Directors machine uttered, "Alpha children wear grey. Usually, those movements affect the people who are desperate in life and have no God, religion, and who are confused about their own identity. The leader that contributes to the lives of those people will let them feel that they are hooked to God by him and that everything he says is 100% true and that it is from God. By this, the people believe that he passes the messages of faith from God but instead, he's passing his own religious ideas that may lead to wars, the killing of people, and vicious crimes. Jonestown Massacre is one of the worst examples in history for brainwashing for the religious conversions. People in Jonestown drank Kool–Aid and died, but they thought that they made whatever God wanted them to do even if it was a crime. But in reality, many people thought that the CIA was responsible for what happened that day. Moreover, the Soviet Union blamed the American CIA for what happened and they had documents and records that confirm their beliefs. And this was because of the idea of communism that increased among the American people. These victims that undergo this procedure are in the state of a mind that operates similar to robots programmed and wired to blindly accept the deception that is forced upon their existence. Their existence, however, is similar to an empty soul, meaningless to anyone. The satirical novel by George Orwell, Animal Farm expresses the way how society worked during the Russian Revolution. It is represented with farm animals, who take over a farm to run it for themselves. However, the outcome is worse from when they started and end with a tyrannical, cruel, and selfish ruler. The animals are fed with lies and rumors that twists their brains with turmoil and are left with a life that they never wanted. They each impersonate different roles and aspects of the revolution. Boxer, a character from "Animal Farm", portrays the part of the proletariat (working) class because he works harder no matter what, is brainwashed to remain loyal, and he is uneducated, preventing him to fully understand situations. Even though the pain, work, and distraught, Boxer always continues to work harder as he sees that this will solve the problems. • 35. Brainwashing And Connotation In Aldous Huxley's Brave New... How can someone claim something is right if they've been conditioned everything they do must be for the good of society? In the novel Brave New World, Aldous Huxley uses literary devices such as diction and negative connotation to explore the issues of brainwashing, relationships, and drug dependency and how these issues affect society. He relates these issues back to real life problems in the 1930s like racism, sexism and the great depression. When Huxley wrote his novel in 1931 it was near the beginning of a worldwide depression. However many economic issues were on his mind because of what was happening when he wrote this novel, Huxley was also very much aware of the social and scientific changes that were also happening in the world. He uses these thoughts to create a society focused on these issues. In Brave New World, Huxley emphasises on the idea of brainwashing by mentioning it over and over again to establish how incapable people are to take care of themselves so someone has to step in, aka the government. Huxley uses diction with words such as corruption and hatred to pull in a negative feeling that people experience for not conforming to the ideas that everyone else in society shares. Even when the people know that they're being controlled, they've grown a sense of longing for the soma (brainwashing) and it just doesn't phase them anymore. Advertising: Modern Day Brainwashing Essay Brainwashing and Mind Control are "best thought of as a series of techniques that are used over time to shape a person's perception, cognition, emotions, decision making and behavior to such an extent that they have lost their freedom of choice" (Mind Control Today). These techniques, once in existence within authoritarian and totalitarian governments, are increasingly being practiced by advertising companies and mass media. Advertisers and marketing companies are mostly interested in subliminal manipulation because by targeting consumers' subconscious mind, they can control their involuntary actions, emotions and beliefs. The subconscious part of our mind is able to process around 20,000 pieces of information per second, where as our conscious part can only cope with about forty. This function explains why any subliminal message that our subconscious receives, can be received and responded to by consumers without them ever being aware of it. This form of mind control can be very powerful if used correctly, it could influence consumers to want and buy a product without their control (Winder). The result of mind control can be identified in persons who end up developing different beliefs and values. Once this controlling process grows in multiple different ways for a long period of time, it results in brainwashing. Interestingly enough, according to Steve Hassan, in brainwashing, the manipulator is the hostile enemy, where as in mind control the manipulator is a friend, a helper, and the targeted person is a willing participant in the situation. However, when a danger such as an over controlling government threatens to take those feelings away, one truly appreciates the kindness and loyalty of humans. In 1984, George Orwell is able to use O'Brien's deceptive, astute, and political nature in order to warn readers about the negative effects that a brainwashing totalitarian government could have on human minds and emotions. At the beginning of the novel, O'Brien is presented as a character who Winston Smith could trust with his deepest thoughts. He is described as having a rather intimidating figure, with his burly physique and thick neck. Despite the menacing appearance, he was believed to be "...a person that you could talk to, if somehow you could cheat the telescreen and get him alone." (Orwell 13) However, the kind nature was all simply a lie. For instance, in order to gain Winston's trust, O'Brien gives away the address to his house, and turns off his telescreen. With these actions, O'Brien is able to trick Winston into confiding in him with thoughts of rebellion. • 43. The Use Of Censorship On The Human Brain Brainwashing refers to the techniques systematically used to alter a person's beliefs by using some sort of pressure on the human brain. This technique can be shown in the period right before the peak of the Cold War in the 1950s when the threat of Communism was becoming ever so real. By the thousands, American citizens gained an allegiance to Marxist ideologies and anti–capitalist doctrines. This can be shown in Communist government's use of censorship of material to "brainwash" its people, especially subjects pertaining to capitalism. First used in the 1950s during the Korean War, brainwashing was used to describe the methods on how Chinese Communists influenced the actions of their prisoners. This can best be explained by ... The interrogator would then lightly question the prisoner, who would be unwittingly collaborating with the Chinese, to make a list of some "problems" with America. This type of foreign coercive persuasion used by the Chinese Communist party became more and more outright through the prisoners' stay at the "re–education" camps. The physical impacts of Chinese brainwashing were minimal, as the only intention of the Chinese was to convert as many people as possible to the Communist orthodoxy. The concept of brainwashing was key as esteemed psychologist Edward Hunter stated that "The United States of America is the main battlefield...and the people and the soil and the resources of the United States" (Weiner 1). In this quote, he warned the American people not to be influenced by the upcoming threat of Communist manipulation. His primary reason for making this statement was his first–hand experience regarding Mao Zedong's China. The Korean conflict brought no end to American paranoia as many free American citizens had been arrested and accused of being "enemies of the state" in Communist China. Many of these convicted Americans then went through a series of rigorous interrogations intended to guilt trip the person into thinking that he/she was the aggressor to the victims in China or North Korea. Literary Criticism Of Brainwashing In 1984 Literary Analysis on Brainwashing in George Orwell's 1984 The novel '1984' by British author, best known by his pen name, George Orwell takes place in dystopian London during the mid–nineteen eighties. The British Isles, together with the Americas, southern Africa and Australia, are all part of the super state Oceania. In 1984 Oceania is one of only three nations left in the world, the other ones being Eurasia and Eastasia. Of course, that is if you were to trust the information given by the totalitarian, all–controlling and all–knowing governing party. The protagonist, thirty–nine–year–old Winston Smith, is a member of the "outer" party and works at the Ministry of Truth. There he is one of many who day after day work, ironically, with the falsification of historical events for the benefit of the party. However, Winston secretly hates the party, but that is something he has managed to hide from the "thought police" his entire life. It is not a small achievement either, since the telescreens, televisions which also operates as security cameras, are everywhere, keeping the people of Oceania under constant surveillance. • 55. The Non-Scientific Concept Of Brainwashing In 1984 By... What exactly is brainwashing? One may say it is the manipulation of the mind. As a matter of fact, "brainwashing is a non–scientific concept that the human mind can be altered or controlled by certain psychological techniques" (Wikipedia). The concept of brainwashing was highly debated in the 20th century regarding if reconditioning the brain was possible; many argued that it was possible due to the incidents in the Korean War. However, there is no scientific proof that brainwashing (a theoretical form of mind control) exists or is even possible. The concept of mind control is quite evident in the novel, 1984. 1984 follows the life of Winston Smith, an undeceived Outer Party member in Oceania, and his attempts to retaliate against the manipulative government, Big Brother. To Winston, Big Brother is the doctrine of manipulation, propaganda, and totalitarianism. Although this may be true, the majority of the citizens continues to follow Big Brother unconditionally. George Orwell's cautionary tale, 1984, depicts that humans and citizen of Oceania are easily manipulated into doing the government's bidding. Furthermore, both 1984 and 21st century's bureaucracy controls its citizens by the use of Thought Police, propaganda and language.
