Summative: Digital Portfolio Reflection
1. What is the genre or style of photography that most appeals to you?
The genre of photography that most appeals to me is landscape photography. Landscape
photography shows spaces within the world, photographs usually concentrate on nature
but man-made features can also be incorporated. Some examples of landscape
photography include: sunsets, flowers, forests, lakes and waterfalls.
2. Explain what you like about this genre or style.
I like landscape photography because it focuses on nature and I enjoy taking pictures of
nature such as trees, flowers and animals. I also admire this genre of photography because
the pictures turn out very colorful. Landscape photography incorporates a variety of things
such as water, trees, sun and fields, it provides a wide range of things to take pictures of.
3. What are your strengths in photography?
My general strengths in photography include having a clear understanding of the process of
making a photograph of good quality, excellent planning, problem solving and effective use
of time mainly outside of school. I enjoy taking photographs and therefore show passion
and interest when given a photography assignment, I put a lot of time, thinking and effort
to make the photos perfect and to match the teacher’s expectations. Lastly another one of
my strengths includes: effective contrast and focus in pictures. Whenever I take a photo I
try to include simplicity, rule of thirds, leading lines, good lighting, symmetry or
juxtaposition to produce an effective photo that is eye catching to the viewer and teacher.
4. Which photograph(s) in this portfolio best exemplify these strengths?
The picture of the eye from the hands and eyes theme, it involves rule of thirds, simplicity,
the main focus is on the eye and could also incorporate leading lines because it allows your
eyes to wander when looking at the picture.
5. Which areas do you need to improve upon in photography?
Areas that need improvement in my photographs is the exposure, this controls how light or
dark an image will appear. Some of my pictures turn out dark making it hard to see the main
subject. Also, I need to work on the exposure by choosing the appropriate f-stop. However
there are some subjects that are tough like high contrast scenes or backlit portraits. This can
be improved, for example taking pictures at different times of the day because the colour of
daylight is always changing.

6. Which photograph(s) in this portfolio show these areas?
The picture of the plant, shallow depth of field, could use more lighting to make the picture
even better by allowing the colour of the plants to stand out.
7. Choose one photograph to examine in depth. Describe the feeling and message of this
photograph. Does it successfully convey the feeling and message you had hoped for?
How so?
The one photograph I choose to examine in depth is the one with the hands encased
around the eye. When I took this picture I wanted to focus on the eye and capture its detail
and by having the hands around it creates leading lines, it leads the viewer’s eyes to the
main object. I titled this image “the eyes are the window to the soul” because the main
focus is the eye and the hands create a tunnel. I believe this image does convey that
message because as I mentioned before the hands create a tunnel or path into the eyes.
