The document discusses how the media producer used, developed, and challenged conventions of real R&B music videos in their own media product. They looked at existing R&B music videos for inspiration on constructing a narrative and visual style. Key aspects like location, lighting, props, and camera shots were used to both follow conventions - like portraying the male lead as wealthy and successful - and challenge stereotypes - like portraying the female lead as strong. Shots were chosen to advance the story and portray characters and settings. Editing techniques like slow motion and panning were used both extend scenes and challenge conventions. The goal was to produce an entertaining video that maintained some predictability of genre while also presenting something new.

Evaluation Question 1
1. EVALUATION 1
In what way does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
2. When planning the music video, I looked at pre-existing media
texts for inspiration on how I could construct a professional
looking music video whilst making the narrative of the music
video both unique and unpredictable. This was vital as I had no
previous experience producing music videos. This gave me the
advantage of being able to plan a successful narrative that I
assumed would entertain our desired targeted demographic of
people aged between 15-26 to the maximum extent.
I noticed how throughout R&B music
videos in particular there is a mixture
between narrative storyline and
performance shots within its
construction in order to ensure that
the music video maintains an element
of predictability and still be
identifiable as of the R&B genre.
3. I used a combination and arrangement of
key aspects including location, lighting,
props and editing to enhance the visual
storytelling that underlies the narrative of
my media product – an R&B music video.
Mise-En-Scene
The key narrative in the music video is to
show the contrast between the two main
characters following the stereotypical
character tropes according to Propp.
Romaan is shown to be remarkably
wealthy and successful which contrasts
with Porscha who is from an ordinary
background. I wanted to challenge the
codes and conventions relating to the R&B
genre through portraying Porscha as the
strong character within the narrative
which prevents Romaan from being shown
as the protagonist which is stereotypical
within this genre.
4. I used camera shots such as a number of over
the shoulder shots where we display a series
of text messages between the male and
female character to denote a disequilibrium
to the audience; along-side close up shots of
Porscha’s face to further exaggerate her
frustration with the ideologies of the male
character. With the addition of a number of
match on action shots to highlight here
journey to meet with Romaan as shown
within the narrative.
Camera Shots/ Angles
Location I used establishing shots to show the
difference between the two characters in
terms of their backgrounds.This also
included panning shots of cultural
locations such as a shisha bar.
Along with these shots that defy stereotypical
codes and conventions of the R&B genre, I decided
to implement performance shots detailing Romaan
as the main feature of the music video. The use of
tracking shots and reverse tracking shots meant
that we were able to connote Romaan’s success
and confidence through his body language and
mannerisms and the way he slurs the lyrics singing
directly into the camera lens.
5. We used an accumulation of props in order to
develop and build upon the stereotypical codes
and conventions that made the music video
relatable and identifiable as a R&B feature.
I intentionally used props within the music video
as a way of building the reliability of the
conventions and in addition follow the identifiable
codes in order to present the audience with an
element of predictability. I displayed Romaan
wearing expensive materialistic items which
opposes Porscha as we portrayed her through a
more relaxed and casual environment.
Props
The use of lighting levels was used
deliberately to represent the ambience of
the narrative through its mysterious
characteristics and effect on the audience.
The low-key lighting was sufficient as a
result of it being dark enough to portray
Romaan through his desired image and
still being able to see the relevant
information through the camera shot.
Lighting
6. Editing
I attempted to use editing techniques both develop on existing R&B codes and
conventions but to also challenge them by incorporating a different approach.
These techniques included the ken burns effect where we display the panning zoom effect
making the Rolex appear as the biggest item on the screen. We additionally used the use
of slow-motion to not only extend the visuals in certain parts of the video which resulted
in the effects of the materialistic items being extended and the panning shots in slow
motion allows the audience to grasp the full setting of the sequence.
