Evaluation 2; How effective is the
combination of your main product
and ancillary products?
By Katie wright
Synergy
• Linking my products together is important so
it can be easily identified by the audience.
• This can be done through use of mise en
scene, costume and lighting.
• Editing and sound is irrelevant as this can only
be applied to my video production, not my
advert and double page spread.
Synergy
• The primary focus with synergy was the
costuming.
• It was important to show the audience a solid
theme with my production but without
spoiling too much in my advert and double
page spread.
• As the costuming was the most important part
of the documentary as well, it was a primary
focus to imply this with my ancillary products.
Photos for products
These are just some of the images I worked with when creating my ancillary products.
Double page spread main image
Based on the colours of the background of the photoshoot, I created an colour
scheme that worked with it to create a calming an relaxing feel to the double
page spread. I used browns and greys and worked with this scheme, as well as
adding in additional features such as the camera lenses flare.
Double page spread main image
I specifically chose this photo because it shows the audience who the
documentary is about as well as gives them hints through costume and props as
to what its about. In the photo, she is dressed up as Alice from Alice in
wonderland, in which is the themed in the photoshoot as well as in the
production, in which she mentions was her favourite character to cosplay.
Advert main image
This advert was made following from the theme in the double page spread as well as
the production. The photo seen on the right is of Jess holding up a bottle that says
“drink me” which is a famous icon of the film Alice in Wonderland. This implication
shows her expressing her love for Alice in Wonderland without the necessity of
showing too much. The way she is holding out her hand could be seen as a symbolic
icon of her opening her hand out to the audience to invite them to watch the
documentary.
Advert main image
This product follows from the double page spread as it uses the same colour scheme,
text scheme and character icon as before. The theme of Alice in Wonderland is still
evident here as already discussed, and also the use of the editing with the lenses flare
relates to the double page spread, as well as the background colour and lighting and
the text colours. This then creates a synergy between the double page spread and the
advert.

Synergy between production and
ancillary products; text
• The text was an important feature to put into
synergy as it was iconic of the documentary
and was the easiest way to link the products
together.
• The style and colour scheme was the same
across all three products, in which all used the
font soul Caliber which is font I found on font
space.
Synergy between production and
ancillary products; characters

Synergy between production and
ancillary products; characters
• Linking the characters together through
synergy gives the audience an idea about
who’s in the production so they can determine
the documentary by that character, not just
the title.
• The main character I worked with in the
production was Jess Sharman, who is the
character who appeared on the ancillary
products.
Synergy between production and
ancillary products; characters
• By determining a main character for a production gives
the audience a good idea about who the documentary
mostly looks at.
• Using Jess for the ancillary products further tells the
audience this and gives them a clearer idea.
• In the advert, we can only see her hand and a part of
her shoulder, in which adds mystery to the character
for the audience who wouldn’t know the character
(had they not seen the production or double page
spread), but would assume that they are the main
character as they were chosen to be used as the
ancillary product.
Synergy between production and
ancillary products; Alice in Wonderland
Video production
photoshoot
Synergy between production and
ancillary products; Alice in Wonderland
• The theme used across all these products was
based on Alice in Wonderland.
• This was decided after Jess Sharman, the main
character in my documentary, said that her
childhood book was based on Alice in
Wonderland and it was also her favourite
character so I used that theme to attract my
audience with the ancillary products.
Synergy between production and
ancillary products; Alice in Wonderland
• In the video production, the use of mise en
scene and props implies Jess’ obsession with
Alice in Wonderland, such as the iconic “This
way to the mad tea party” sign.
• In one of the shots in the cut away scenes,
Jess is even holding up the dress she is
wearing in the ancillary photos.
Synergy between production and
ancillary products; Alice in Wonderland
• This then links back to the ancillary products, in
which in the double page spread she is also
holding the Cheshire cat, which is also an icon of
Alice in Wonderland.
• In the photo in the advert, jess is holding a prop
of a bottle that says drink me which is another
popular icon. Not only that, but in the corner of
the photo you can see she is wearing the same
outfit as she was in the ancillary products.
Synergy between production and
ancillary products; Alice in Wonderland
• By using the theme of Alice in Wonderland
throughout synergy, the audience can identify the
main characters identity and interests.
• By associating Alice in Wonderland with Jess is
then showing that she has a special interest for
Alice in wonderland, which the audience can
recognise as it comes up across the synergy.
• This then means that the ancillary products
indicate the audience about the characters traits
and interests without telling too much about
what the documentary is about.
Was this successful?
• As proven, there is a strong synergy across the
products I have created for my A2 coursework.
• A strong synergy connection means that my
products can then be easily recognised by my
target audience, and a distinguishable product
shows strong signs of potential and success.
Was this successful?
• This product reflects well upon the theme of the
documentary as well as the characters and the
overall feel of the documentary.
• In terms of conventions, there isn’t really
anything you can show it to be an expository
documentary, but the fact that Jess is dressed up
in the ancillary tells the audience it could
potentially be an important factor to the
documentary, particularly when you link it in with
the title “Dress to Express”.
Was this successful?
• Overall, I am pleased with the outcome of these
products.
• I was able use synergy throughout my products to
express what I thought this documentary meant,
which was done through the use of texts, colour
schemes and themes.
• The overall vibe presented in these products is
positive, in which both ancillary products reflect
the mood and atmosphere created by the
documentary itself which should be enough to
draw in the tart audience.
