When I Was A Kid Growing Up From A Western Capitalistic...
When I was younger, I was infamous. My teachers and peers characterized me as manipulative, and
indeed I had a powerful ability to exploit those around me in order to get what I want. Over the
years I have been less inclined to use this ability to persuade others. Through a series of learning
experiences, I have found that manipulating people never yields positive results. As a child, each
time I used this influence for my own benefit, I would be reprimanded in some form and therefore
learned that this behavior was not socially acceptable. In particular, one incident stands out among
the rest as a socializing moment, as it introduced me to socially acceptable behaviors and taught me
to follow these norms. As a kid growing up in a western ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of using this knowledge of the social hierarchy to transcend these overpriced fads, I instead
capitalized upon them. Middle school was, in all likelihood, the period in which people were most
likely to fall victim to fleeting material fads. This could stem from insecurity at the age of puberty,
and the need for adolescents to be liked by their peers. Additionally, as we grew older these trends
became increasingly costly to follow. Black River Middle School in Chester, New Jersey fell victim
to a trend in which Foohy erasers were the only socially acceptable erasers to use. Foohy erasers
were multi–colored pencil top erasers that were in the shape of a monkey. In all honesty, these
erasers were purely decorative due to the fact that their functionality as an eraser was extremely
limited by their shape. Nevertheless, they were all the rage when I was in the sixth grade, and as
previously mentioned, I acknowledged and capitalized upon the fact that these erasers were the only
ones allowed by our social standards. Once I realized that Foohy erasers were becoming popular, I
asked my mother to drive me to the supermarket in order to buy several packages of them. The next
day, I came into school with my multi–colored bounty and gained the admiration of my peers. One
of my friends stared at my erasers with a longing glance, and told me that her mom would not
purchase Foohy erasers for her, as they

Sherry Turkle
How people interact with each other can us tell a lot about society. It can tell us about their interests
and goals in life. In Sherry Turkle, Selections from "Selections from Alone Together: Why We
Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other", Turkle explores Artificial intelligence
and how humans interact with it. Turkles explores how people (specifically children) are able to
develop love for AI's how their relationship develops. Talking more specifically about love, Barbara
Fredrickson, in Selections from "Love 2.0: How Our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything We Feel,
Think, Do, and Become" shares her research about her discovery of "love 2.0" and how the old idea
of love is outdated and misunderstood. Giving us an insight of how ... Show more content on

Yes, I thought, they engaged in a personal conversation with ELIZA, but in a spirit of 'as if'" (458).
It is easier for people to have conversations that they are able to control and achieve desired
outcomes without dealing with real human emotions that can be daunting. People can experience the
little moments of "positivity resonance" through artificial intelligence much easier, faster and at their
leisure. With enough difficulties in the world, people try to avoid getting into relationships that will
give them negative experiences. Some people have experiences which present them with too much
friction with one another. Technology provided us with ways we can experience interactions that
present less friction, interactions like the ones with Artificial intelligence. As Turkle says in her
essay "At the robotic moment, more than ever, our willingness to engage with the inanimate does
not depend on being deceived but wanting to fill in the blanks" (459). With the new technology
advancing, more and more people are willing to give it a try to fulfill their desire of connecting with
others. The use of AI in many ways allows people to explore themselves without the problem with

Rebecca Akin Research Paper
Rebecca Akin was born in 1980, and was a teenager during the early and late 1980s.Rebecca's
family included her father, mother, and two younger sisters. A typical day for her involved going to
school, coming home to do homework and chores, and hanging out with friends or going
outside. After dinner, she would finish up her homework, and then relax before bed. Rebecca went to
St. John the Baptist Catholic Church/School for middle school. Her teachers made sure that students
worked hard, and that they didn't give excuses. She would often use an Apple IIe until 7th grade,
when she got to use her first PC computer. Rebecca played for her school's softball, basketball, and

During the time that Rebecca grew up, the presidents were Ronald Reagan, George Bush Sr., Bill
Clinton, and George W. Bush. She thought it was kind've hard to tell if they were good presidents
because of all the major events and scandals that happened during the time that they held office.
When Rebecca was a teenager, she feared school shootings, bombings and terrorism, because of the
recent events involving the U.S. and the massacres
Growing up in Illinois, Rebecca grew up cheering for the Chicago Bulls, who eventually went on to
win three championship titles. She also remembers watching the the Olympics' Centennial,
celebrating 100 years of countries competing against each other in various sports.
Rebecca listened to many different types of music growing up, but of all the bands and artists she
listened to, U2 was her favorite. She would listen to music on the radio, CD's, and cassette tapes.
Rebecca's favorite shows to watch after school, were reruns of "M.A.S.H.", and movies she
remembers seeing were, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "Titanic", "Schindler's List", "Home

The science of Star Wars is book written by Jeanne Cavelos, it tries to link the content of the Star
Wars trilogies with modern science. It offers the readers the plausibility of the phenomena that
occurs in the world of Star Wars. The book is divided into five chapters excluding the introduction.
She proceeds from environments to aliens and androids to spaceships and weapons to end with a
chapter on "The Force".
The first Chapter is called Planetary Environments. It has four essays and seven section, sections
headings include "You Can't Have an Empire without Real Estate" and "The Bright Center of the
Universe" and "A Planet a Day Keeps the Empire Away" etc. The topics she covers in this chapter
includes things like formation of planets, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"The Dawn of Wookiee" tells us about which bi– and quadrupedalisms are assessed and raises
questions about why Wookiees originally lived in trees. The section "Slugfest" characterizes Jabba
the Hutt and the predator space slug and what its diet would probably be. "When Teddy Bears have
their Picnic" reviews the physiological and psychological characteristics of koalas, chimpanzees and
Ewoks, and "Did You Leave Your Headlights On?" describes and evaluates Jawas and Sand People,
optics, Photoreceptors and Bioluminescence. There is one significant point, that it is highly unlikely
for aliens from different planets to survive in a single environment such as the Mos Eisley cantina.
Example, Jabba being a slug supposedly moves using a mavelike motion by creating a coating of
secreted slime, but in the 1997 version of the Episode IV, Jabba is seen easily moving around in the
xerophytic environment of Tatooine where he should in fact be desiccating.
The third chapter of the book is named "Droids" and is comprised of eight topics and two essays.
The section "Wheels or Legs" assesses the relationship between body shape, coordination and
locomotive capabilities of the droids. While the section "I, Droid" delves into the subjects of neural
networks, rule based vs. case based intelligence systems and memory wipes. The other sections in
this chapter include "Do You Hear What I Hear" which assesses the concepts of speaking with

Neopets Case Study Essay
Neopets – Case Study
As per the Neopets website, Neopets is an online youth–focused virtual world whose primary focus
is to allow members to create and take care of virtual pets. In addition to virtual pets, it also offers
games, auctions, trades and messaging. Neopets have been created in 11 languages and generates
more than 5 billion pageviews per month. With nearly 200 games, weekly contests, discussion
boards, plots and thousands of virtual items to collect, Neopets members are as passionate about the
site as they are about their virtual pets. Neopets has approximately 44 million members, and in the
fourth quarter of 2007, Neopets averaged approximately 3.5 million monthly unique visitors
globally.

However unlike games such as World of Warcraft and Second Life that are based on real time action
rendered in 3D, Neopets is primarily based on navigating through static 2D web pages, and playing
small self contained puzzle–type games. Though Second Life and World of Warcraft do not target
Neopet's primary audience of girls under the age of 18, it also needs to move up the technology
chain. There might soon be a 3D virtual pet website which might take away market share from
Neopets and Neopets might see its adopter surfing to a 3D virtual pet websites.
Promotion strategy for Neopets :
Neopets has traditionally depended on word of mouth and viral marketing which is a subset of word
of mouth to increase its spread. As per Hindle, Tim (2008, p205) viral marketing involves choosing
a small group of well–connected individuals to launch a product or service via the internet or their
mobile phones. The idea is that their approval will spread rapidly via their online network of
connections, create a buzz around the product being marketed and result in millions of sales. This
form of marketing has grown further with the popularity of social networks like Facebook.
While Neopets is very popular with kids who use the internet extensively, Neopets needs to consider
other mediums to attract kids who are not yet extensive users of the internet. To do that Neopets has

Keep Your Thrabs Still When I M Talking To You Analysis
In David Carr's essay "Keep Your Thumbs Still When I'm Talking to You," he explains what people
nowadays normally do at social events and how it reflects on the people surrounding them. In the
21st century most people believe everything is about technology, every second there are new
updates or more news feed to scroll down to and so many people are caught up on what other people
are doing, rather than what is going on around them. Carr describes situations in which people are
compulsively looking at their screen while they are out at a social event, which is something that is
known to be fashionably rude. Carr's argument is if society does not realize the respect they need to
offer then, if in the 21st century people are going to social events to just stare at their phone screens
all night, how will it be in the future? Carr uses examples that happen on a day to day basis, which
makes it seem as if it is the new trend to be rude during social ... Show more content on

Although everyone should be up to date with the newest technology out there and socially involved
in society, where does the line cross? Many individuals either do not realize it or just do not care.
Carr refers a quote written by Anthony De Rosa, "It's fine when you're at home or at work when
distracted by things, but we need to give that respect to each other back."(385). De Rosa points out
things society does not realize, answering a call during the middle of a conversation may make the
person feel unimportant, but if it's vice versa the feelings would be mutual. Usually when someone
is looking at their phone it is because they are bored, so other people will think they are boring.
Some individuals do not even excuse themselves from the conversation which is considered to be
rude, but these individuals do not realize that it bothers certain people. Just because technology is
advancing does not mean it should just replace social contact

Sherry Turkle's Project Classroom Makeover : Analysis
In "Project Classroom Makeover", Cathy Davidson demonstrates the potential benefits that can
come from the implementation of technology in the current educational paradigm. Furthermore, in
Sherry Turkle's "selections from Alone Together", Turkle discusses the unique relationship between
a child and his or her artificially intelligent toys, some of which include Tamagotchis and Furbies.
Interestingly, children give these toys special treatment relative to other toys. If the special treatment
encourages positive behavior, then these toys could be potentially implemented into the current
educational paradigm as a new form of technology. Therefore, the real question is whether there are
benefits of allowing children to play with these toys, or will they cause more harm than good? Toys
like the Tamagotchis and Furbies are artificially intelligent toys that interact with children by
"responding...[to their] behavior" (Turkle, 476). Often, children treat their Tamagotchis and Furbies
differently than their other toys. In fact, the "other toys...are usually put aside" when broken,
whereas, with their Tamagotchis and Furbies, children worry about the toys' health and artificial life.
Furthermore, Tamagotchis and Furbies "demand attention..." and without it "...they will not survive"
(Turkle 464). These toys require work, and if a child is not willing to work, the toy will die.
Moreover, work is not something many children enjoy doing. So, what makes the Tamagotchis and
Furbies so

Postmodernism Theory Overview Of Alone Together By Sherry...
"Alone Together" by Sherry Turkle can be explained by using the postmodernism theory. There are
examples used throughout the entirety of the book that the author herself experienced during
interviews that clearly show how our society is evolving in these postmodern times. "Alone
Together" goes into detail explaining how people today are interacting with technology and how it is
greatly changing our society.
Theory Overview Before explaining postmodernism, modernism needs to explained some first.
Modernism believes in the absolutes of things such as beauty art and music. There is only one set
way to do these things. Music is things such as Mozart and Bach. There is a clear objective of linear
thinking that is to be stuck to and anything ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sherry Turkle begins the book by talking about our relationships with robots and how it is going to
change our society. Robots are another way for us to interact. We can interact with them as if they
are people and they can assist us in our day to day lives. This is an example of our society being
fragmented as it is another way for us to interact in society. Sherry Turkle writes about our
interaction with robots and how that is increasing and how our interactions with humans are
decreasing. Through her interviews she learns that some people are much more comfortable talking
with a robot or computer program than with a human. There is a computer program called ELIZA
that people can interact with and the program is set to respond in certain ways. Turkle found out that
people would start telling the program their secrets and issues within just a few interactions. This is
much quicker than people will open up during therapy with a human. This can show a shift of
people potentially interacting more with programs like this as a form of therapy rather than taking
the traditional route and talking to a therapist. Childrens toys such as tamagotchis show "emotions"
and in turn make the children feel actual emotions. The tamagotchis will ask for and require care
from the children to "survive". This elicited actual emotions from the kids as they would get happy

the third grade, I had mastered the craft of acting like a genuine eight–year–old American. No longer

Alone Together By Sherry Turrkle Analysis
How many people can tell they live without any technology for their daily lives? Now, people live in
the society where they cannot communicate without technology. In the modern society, a newly
invented technology gets a power to control and lead the trends. According to New York Post,
"Apple reported that newly launched iPhone X, which has been sold at the price of $999, sparked a
record quarterly revenue of $88.3 billion – and pushed the cost of an average iPhone to $796. That is
15% above the average price a year earlier" (Vega, 2018). Through this short two sentences, it is
detected that how people are enthusiastic about technology's development and transition. As

In her essay, Turkle takes about the use of robots and technologies, and how those have been
impacted the development of human beings. "Alone Together" can be divided into two parts. The
first half of the book is about the development of social robots and how those robotic technologies
are applied in human life. Turkle shares the results of the research of how robotic toys, such as
Furby and Tamagotchi, affect children and adolescents. Through some examples and historical
events of technology, she explains how the robot has been developed and enhanced for people,
especially younger generation, started to think the robot not much as machine, but more as friends.
The definition of human changed throughout the decades: while human was special because they
can think, after thinking computer had been launched and disseminated, human became special
because they can 'feel'. On the other hand, the second half of the book is all about social networks
formed on the Internet, and how human beings are exposed to the online world. Turkle explores the
increasing dependence on the online world and discusses about how human beings disentangle their
lives in the real world and the online world. She also emphasizes the communication between each
other. Increasing in using digital devices to communicate, people lose personal connections between
each other and are connected through voice; it means that people lose voice to associate with

much more edgier. Remember this came from a person who was about 10 years old. So, an edgy 10–

during computer class, I whipped up a crude drawing of a little ghost girl in front of a black

song that correlated with death. It freaked out some of my classmates, and they asked me if it was

Sherry Turkle : How Computers Change The Way We Think
Sherry Turkle's essay "How Computers Change the Way We Think" discuss how the growing
popularity of technology is disconnecting us from our brain, loved ones and may be invading our
private life. Electronics might not have been as helpful as we previously thought. Technology has
made it easier for us to fix our mistakes but not learn from them. Turkle had met professors at MIT
when students had transitioned from slide rules to calculators. The teachers had all exclaimed that
students had become sloppy. "Professors insisted that required students maintain a mental sense of
scale, whereas those who relied on calculators made frequent mistakes in orders of magnitude." We
are too quick to have technology solve our everyday problems instead of resolving it ourselves to
better understand our mistake in the first place. We no longer question or have interest in how
technology can handle our tasks, but wonder what else it can accomplish on its own. "When people
say that something is transparent, they mean that they can see how to make it work, not that they
know how it works." Turkle states "For never has our world been more complex, hybridized and
global." Since we become so dependent on items to make our daily lives stress free, could mean
future generations will not know the mental exercise of resolving a conflict without computers. We
have become accustomed to waking up and checking the bright screen first thing in the morning.

The, Nearest Neighbors, By Sherry Turkle
Ever since the invention of the computer, humans have always wanted to create an artificial
intelligence that can act and feel the way a human does. In Alone Together by Sherry Turkle, she
explains that through games and artificial intelligence, humans have been changing the way that
both children and adults think and feel, thus bridging the gap between emotional machines (humans)
and intelligent machines (computers). Turkle is able to show how her experiences through working
at MIT in the 70's to how children perceive things as alive enough in the form of a video game, as a
way of explaining that gap between man and machine has been getting closer and closer. The first
chapter offers a strong viewing of how humans have been trying to close the gap of emotional and
intelligent machines since the 1970's. In the first section of the first chapter, "Nearest Neighbors",
Turkle explains how Weizenbaum's program ELIZA, which was being analyzed at MIT, was being
used to show how words can be strung together. The students were inputting dialogue to the
program, and it was responding. If the user would say something about their mother, the program
would respond with a response that a human may offer. "ELIZA had no model of what a mother
might be or any way to represent the feeling of anger. What it could do was take strings of words
and turn them into questions or restate them as interpretations" (31). This model of thought would
go on to be used throughout the attempts of

Speech From Alone Together : Why We Expect More From...
Human interactions with each other and with tangible objects such as technological products, help
create relationships among human beings themselves, and among human beings and physical
objects. From these relationships, most people have either faced acceptance or rejection from the
people or things they have related with. Some of these are results of differences in what is
conventionally accepted as normal while others are just results of unfulfilled expectations from the
relationships created. In Andrew Solomon's article "Son," he discusses that his mother modified his
identity at an early age, which caused the struggle between his real identity formation and the
expectation that his mother and the society had. For Solomon, relationships can sometimes
disintegrate on the basis that one's real identity does not conform to what conventionally passes as
normal, because a majority of people are not accepting to standards that differs from normal. In
contrast, in Sherry Turkle's article "Selection from Alone Together: Why We Expect More from
Technology And Less from Each Other," she discusses how expectations from human relationships,
e.g. love and emotional connections, create new fronts of identity formations with technology when
human beings do not meet such expectations. From these two articles, the ideology of identity
formation is a variable of relationships. Most importantly, human relationships with each other and
with technology create acceptance or rejection,

Using Handheld Breath Guiding Device
We, Geoff Shellady, Abby Magner, and Kelly Norfleet, engineering students at the University of
Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, have invented a handheld breath–guiding device. It is an electronic
tool that displays visual animations with which users sync their breathing patterns in order to ease
stress and anxiety. Its digital, handheld format provides users with easy access to the device
whenever it is needed.
Many people are negatively impacted by anxiety and stress on a daily basis. According to the
Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety is the most prevalent mental illness in the
United States, affecting 18% of the population. These disorders can occur unexpectedly and cause a
stress response in the brain that leads to rapid breathing. In the past, systems have been created to
attempt to train a user's breathing. For example, the Lamaze breathing coach patented by Denise
Fletcher in 2013 is a software application, which shows the desired breathing pattern and displays
the user's actual breathing by using the microphone on the device. (US Patent No. 13/858,999, 2014)
The user must then attempt to synchronize his or her breathing with the desired pattern. This
application, however, can be ineffective, considering that many individuals do not have access to a
phone or electronic device on which to run the program, particularly young children. Trying to
synchronize breathing patterns may also heighten stress rather than reducing it. Additionally, phones

Present day has its perks, but the evolution of it all came from many years ago. Technologies and
media have expanded so much in only a short period of time. The 1990s were the beginning of many
different things including text messaging, Google, the Nintendo 64, the Tamagotchi, and so many
other revolutionary products. While some can say that the Columbine shooting and Los Angeles
riots made the decade a horrible time to live in, the changes the United States experienced in the

who intended on putting off a bomb but instead shot many students and specifically targeted
athletes, minorities, and Christians as their victims (history.com). This was the deadliest shooting at
the time it occurred and brought a major shock to the population of the United States. Though this
was a tragic event that affected so many people, the shooting brought up many conversations about
school safety and something much larger, the second amendment of the US constitution. "The year

Why We Expect More From Technology
The twenty first century brought on revolutionary changes, which has affected every faucet of
human life, globally. Technology has advanced communications and economy. Ideas about
interacting and talking robots are no longer dreams, but are part of reality. The world has become
modernized and progress continues. And now the new generation is ready to enact another historical
milestone, education. Davidson in her essay, "Project Classroom Makeover", expresses the need and
benefit that can come from merging technology and education together can bring. She realizes the
educational system has remained stagnant for long enough, and is in need of great changes. Sherry

Just as society is becoming more interconnected, Davidson realizes the pressing need for education
to match society's change, and the iPod was just the right tool. Duke University students broke free
from conventional classroom learning, and paved the way for an interactive education, more
befitting of a technological generation. Davidson does not put emphasis or significance on letter
grades, instead, she believes it is more crucial for students to learn how to improve intellectually, by
working and collaborating with other students. By sharing ideas, and being exposed to fresh and
new discussions, students can grow academically. However, Turkle claims merging education with
technology has the potential to limit the student's way of thinking. She warns "As we've seen, such
relational artifacts do not wait for children to 'animate' them in the spirit of a Raggedy Ann doll or a
teddy bear. They present themselves as already animated and ready for relationship" (Turkle 470).
Toys such as the Tamagotchi or Furby respond to children interaction, however, Turkle criticizes
such relationship, by drawing attention to the children's increasing acceptance of robots that can feel
and be alive. A robot that has a tiny of autonomy over its actions prevents children from projecting
their own ideas onto the toys. With a Raggedy Ann doll, children are able to choose the dolls
actions, which requires creativity and thinking. Even though a piece of technology like the iPod is

The Ecstasy Of Influence By Sherry Turrkle Summary
In "Selections from Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each
Other," Sherry Turkle explores the implications of many different psychological phenomenon that
humans have when reacting to computers that have life–like characteristics such as Tamagotchis and
Furbies. One of the specific psychological processes Turkle describes involves a shift between "a
psychology of projection to a new psychology of engagement" with these machines (Turkle, 470). In
"The Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism," Jonathan Lethem talks about the differences between the
gift and market economies. Turkle's psychologies of projection and engagement significantly impact
Lethem's gift and market economies.

Through her observations, she concludes that when children play with a Furby they "continually
assess [the] Furby's 'emotional' and 'physical' state [because] children fervently believe that the [one]
who loves his or her Furby best will be most loved in return" (Turkle, 470). Through this quote,
Turkle shows that the children do not treat the Furby like any other toy because the Furby has a
dynamic layer of wellbeing that children need to pay attention to. This changing aspect leads
children to spend a lot of time and grow really close with their Furby. Turkle's word choice of
"fervently" connotes a sense of enthusiasm children have towards the fact that they truly believe that
their Furbies's have life–like characteristics because Furbies, "present as having their own needs and
inner lives" (Turkle, 470). Since Furbies are presented as having these life–like traits, children tend
to view them more as human than a toy. This leads children to form a psychology of engagement
with their Furby because they perceive the Furby as being able to share emotion and a bond like
humans. Thus, the psychology of projection and engagement that forms within children creates a
seemingly inseparable relationship between children and their Furbies.
The psychology of projection and engagement relates itself to the gift economy because it serves a
foundation in the creation of a relationship. Lethem introduces the concept of

South Korean Influence On American Pop Culture
South Korea and Hallyu has shown that it is quite powerful through their reinvention of themselves,

had become an "American" food. Now sushi is a staple food in America, with over four thousand
sushi restaurants in the U.S. creating an over two billion dollar revenue (Harden). As many crazed

sweets. It is more common now to find Pocky (a snack consisting of flavored dipped crackers and
extremely popular in the U.S.) and Ramune (a very popular Japanese soda) right along with sushi in
most American supermarkets and convenience stores. Many U.S. food and drink companies have

Unfulfilled Expectations In Andrew Solomon's Son
Human interactions with each other and with other objects such as products of technology create
relationships between human beings themselves, and between human beings and these objects.
Through these relationships, most people have either met acceptance or rejection from the people or
things they have related with. Some of these are as a result of differences in what is conventionally
accepted as normal while others are just as a result of unfulfilled expectations from the relationships
created. In his article "son," Andrew Solomon discusses how, at an early age, his parent–to–child
relationship with his mother modified his identity and the struggle between his real identity
formation and the expectation which his mother and the society had. ... Show more content on

After an individual fails to meet the normal expectations, they find themselves seeking other spheres
where they can be accepted with their unique and non–conventional identities. Andrew Solomon, for
example, struggles to meet the expectation of his mother and the society concerning his sexual
orientation. At 19 years of age, he tries a therapy that was expected to change his sexual orientation.
He "exercises" with various women to meet these expectations. However, in his adulthood, the
rejection of Solomon's sexual orientation and his failure to meet what the society and his mother
expected of him led him to find other spheres where his identity could be accepted. He states that in
his adulthood; "being gay is an identity; the tragic narrative my parents feared for me is no longer
inevitable. The happy life I now lead was unimaginable..." (Solomon 381). In essence, Solomon
found his true identity, and this also allowed him to seek for relationships with other people who
accepted his true identity. He finds it easy to associate and identify with other disabled people who
he considers as minorities and whose identities run parallel to his such as those with autism and

An Army Of One : Me By Jean Twenge
In a world that continues to advance technologically machines titled "sociable robots" acquire life–
like characteristics once exclusive to humans. They are able to express artificial emotions that seem
real to the user. In "Alone Together" by Sherry Turkle we see how sociable robots interact with
children. They begin to feel emotions that were once exclusive to human interaction. In the narrative
"An Army of One: Me" by Jean Twenge we see how prominent the generation gap is. Those under
the age of thirty–five tend to focus more on themselves and making sure they feel worthy. Twenge
appropriately titles this generation as "Generation Me," highlighting the fact that boosts of "self–
esteem" leads to a rise in individualistic focus. Parents expose their children to toys that industries
manufacture to fill the emotional needs children have at a young age. This consequently decreases
the need for human interaction. As technology develops and become more "alive," researchers are
able to find what children desire and are able to give those desires to them in a toy. These new toys
shape how children think and grow, directly affecting them for their entire lives. By changing the
notions of aliveness, sociable robots "cultivate" behaviors representative of Generation Me by
manipulating values important to one's well–being through their expression of life–like emotions
and behaviors. Adults are able to mold the behaviors of their children through the use of an external
factor.

Networked: In Intimacy, New Solitudes: An Analysis
Without our digital devices, do you think we would last a day without being bored to death? The
answer would probably be a "No". The reason being that we depend too much on our devices.
Technologies is very seductive, especially when what it has to offer meets our human
vulnerabilities. We, as human beings, are very lonely and network is very seductive. Our network
life allows us to hide from those we do not wish to see. We are increasingly demanding and
expecting more from technology while demanding less from those around us, like our family,
friends, and colleagues. While technologies does help us explore who we are, the world around us

My Reaction Was A Sick Feeling Of Shock Essay
Sadie got an "F". My reaction was a sick feeling of shock. "What?!, . . . Wait, what?!" I kept

Like it was a concoction of my wife 's imagination. Once home, she showed me the proof; a half–
sheet of college–ruled, spiral–bound, white paper with numbering down the left side of a red margin
followed by a series of answers neatly written on the right. Four of the answers were marked with a
large "X" and a red number 60 circled at the top. If I don't write about my other daughter Ella much,

Project Classroom Makeover Analysis
In "Project Classroom Makeover", Cathy Davidson demonstrates the potential benefits that can
come from the implementation of technology in the current educational paradigm. Furthermore, in
Sherry Turkle's "selections from Alone Together", Turkle discusses the unique relationship between
a child and his or her artificially intelligent toys, some of which included Tamagotchis and Furbies.
Interestingly, children give these toys special treatment relative to other toys. If the special treatment
encourages positive behavior, then these toys could be potentially implemented into the current
educational paradigm as a new form of technology. Therefore, the real question is are there benefits
of allowing children to play with these toys, or will there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As discussed before, as long as these toys do not shut down in response to pain and do not overly
express their pain by crying, these toys should be safe in a school environment. Also, if these toys
respond to behavior like the Tamagotchis and Furbies, then it will be beneficial to allow children to
play with these toys during school time. This is due to the ability of "computers...[that can] turn
children into philosophers" (Turkle, 463). For the Duke university students, computers enabled them
to create new applications for the iPod. Therefore, the computers helped turn them into a type of
philosopher, one that thinks innovatively. The iPod experiment is a perfect example of benefits of
applying technology to the education system because it did in fact turn young adults into a type of
philosophers. For children, computers turned them into a type of philosophers by transforming them
"into caretakers" (Turkle, 464). Philosophers of this type thinks emotionally and understands that all
life, even "digital life, can be emotionally roiling" (Turkle, 464). When children play with their
Tamagotchis and Furbies, they can experiment their actions with toys and not with people. This
allows for them to understand the consequences of mistreating

Plato's Allegory Of The Cave
Plato, a famous Greek philosopher who wrote the 'Allegory of the Cave', attempted to answer some
of these philosophical questions, most notably about the nature of reality. He tells the 'Allegory of
the Cave' as a conversation between his mentor, Socrates, who inspired many of Plato's
philosophical theories, and one of Socrates' students, Glaucon. They discuss the meaning of reality
and how we as humans can be blinded by the dark shadows of reality. The shadows of the objects in
the story represented society's way of telling us what is real, and what is normal.
However, when he added a little plot twist and said if one of the cavemen were released and got out

Society makes a fool out of people by convincing them to continually buy their products. In Plato's
story it said, "And when he came out into the light, that his eyes would be filled with its beams so
that he would not be able to see even one of the things that we call real?" (2). This statement
confirmed society's theory of glossing over reality to create this unreachable fantasy, and finding the
courage to overlook all of it and see things as they really are. Glaucon asked, "Do you mean to say
that we must do them wrong, and compel them to live an inferior life when the better is in their
power?" (5), which tells us that we as a people have the ability to alter the minds of society and
place them in a direction where they see things in their natural state, nothing altered to fit the image
of popularity.

However, Technology should not be completely shunned, with proper use there may come a time
where it can be paired with education in a way Davidson envisions it. She writes "It was also an
investment in student–led curiosity, whose object was not a hunk of white plastic, but the very
nature of interactivity, crowdsourcing, customizing, and inspired inquiry–driven problem solving"
(Davidson 54). If technology were to be free and it was under the control of the people instead of
executives from big companies, then students do have the power to creatively look for information
that may serve useful purposes. However, currently some technology is under the control of
companies like Apple, which promotes a closed system. Also, just like how a completely closed
system can restrict and narrow thoughts, so does a completely open system. Wu writes, "'If in doubt,
the Web had to be 'unconstraining.' I saw the lots of systems that made you work in a certain way,
and they all died.' On the other hand, he wanted to avoid the shortcoming of a 'utopian commune
with no structure, which doesn't work because nobody actually takes out the garbage" (Wu 544).

Put Down Your Device
Global brands, products or trends are seemingly beyond culture as exemplified by Natasha Singer's
article "Can't Put Down Your Device? That's by Design" in which she illustrated that the app for
Instagram created by Greg Hochmuth contributed to a "network effect" (2015: 1). This very
"network effect" involved the simple notion that greater interest in something would result in even
more use for that very product (Singer 2015: 1). The app for Instagram, like the tamagotchi,
emphasized convenience as the tamagotchi could easily accompany one due to its small size and the
app could be accessed by anyone possesing a cell phone or access to an electronic device (Allison
2006: 164). Also, the app and tamagotchi continued to help eliminate cultural ... Show more content

As variety and option tend to lead to the peaking of consumer interest since human nature inevitably
values choice and the allure of something being new or revolutionary, it is easy to see how interest
can be closely linked with consumption. Singer stated that, "In its first 24 hours, the app was
downloaded more than one million times" (2015: 1). This points to the universal nature of the
product stemming largely from the ease at which the product can be accessed. Also, Boush and
Loken pointed out that a sense of familiarity with the product regarding the brand largely
contributed to the consumption adding to the fact that the product is already highly convenient to
purchase (1991: 16). Boush and Loken stated, "Capitalizing on an established brand name is a
growth strategy that seems destined to increase in popularity," which accentuated the idea that
convenience in the use of a product strongly linked with a brand not only involved the product itself
yet involved the brand as well (1991: 16). Thus, it is seemingly clarified that convenience in use
helped to make products, brands, and trends beyond culture, for the appeal to innate human
tendencies in clinging to what is comfortable, known, or familiar is beyond cultural norms. Allison
further clarifies that convenience in use is a key component for making a product, brand, or

Modern society is a fast–paced one that requires a lot of sacrifices to get by. One of those sacrifices
is the time we spend with others to develop connections that lead to developing empathy for one
another. This sacrifice of time leads us to have weaker ties with people around us. Connections with
families, friends, and neighbors became weaker and occur less often, however, the human desire for
love and empathy has not changed. As described by Fredrikson when she says " Just as your
supplies of clean air and nutritious food forecast how long you'll walk on this earth–and whether

People used the program as a projective screen on which to express themselves. Yes, I thought, they

Turkle speaks about her occupation at MIT where analysts experiment with robots by propelling its

this field to take care of the old due to the population of less younger people. Therefore, researchers

any means the only individuals with this thought, there has been chatter from others that is not in the

rather than people. The reasons is that humans are thought to be cruel where the overseer can steal

demonstrates a discrimination against mankind, due to not trusting the ability of a human being.
Furthermore, this creates the lack of living life and facing reality. As a result, artificial intelligence

Every child's favorite "pet"
When ever I think of my childhood there is always one memory that always pops into my head;
playing with my tamagotchi all throughout elementary school. A tamagotchi is a small oval–shaped
device that consists of a screen and a few buttons. What made the tamagotchi appealing to me was
the concept of the egg hatching when you first start the game and you care for it until it grows its
wings/"dies." How well the child cares for the pet will determine how healthy and well–behaved the

while mourning the loss of them. Feeling very sad over their "death" is what essentially caused me
to start to improve on my nurturing skills in my opinion. In the beginning, there was great
controversy over the tamagotchi and whether it was too much work for children, and if it was good
for them to experience real emotions from the virtual pet's "death" or not. According to Dorin, the
tamagotchi suggests that life can be suspended when the care is inconvenient, but i find this to be
the opposite. When the care is not good, and the tamagotchi's life is ended, that shows the children
that you cannot "suspend" a life, and you need to give sufficient effort in order to maintain life.Even
though there is an option to reset the toy whenever you want, it still would not give you the exact
same tamagotchi in the end which would show the child that there is no way to get that "life" back.
In my opinion, the tamagotchi is a great alternative to getting a real pet for a child at first. When
children have no basic nurturing skills, we should not be giving them a real life to manage ,such as a
dog, and letting the dog rely on the child for its necessities when the child has no

Guiding Yourself And Creating An Investing Process
Guiding Yourself And Creating An Investing Process Buying shares means buying a slice of a
company with the hopes you may one day be able to sell it for more than it is worth right now.
Ideally, you are going to come up with your own investing strategy and/or process rather than just
throwing your disposable/saved money into shares without any structure. What Are Your Investing
Goals? You may have read all about how you should invest in the long–term and investing in the
long term is the best way to build wealth––however, you still need an investing goal. Are you
investing so that one day you will have enough wealth to buy a house or start a business? Are you
saving simply to become wealthy, or are you saving for your retirement? Where Are You Getting
Your Information? There are plenty of legitimate online areas where you may find good information
about companies and their share performance. Beware of fraudster websites, but with a little digging
you can find plenty of legitimate websites full of useful and relevant information. Are You Looking
For Capital Gains Or Dividends? In other words, are you buying shares so that you may enjoy their
dividend payments, or are you buying them so that one day you may sell them for a profit? If you
are looking for dividends, then there are plenty of places you can look online to find companies that
have paid dividends consistently for years. Dedicate A Certain Amount Of Time To Research

90's Kid Research Paper
I'm a nineties kid. According to Urban dictionary the definition of a 90's kid is: "A person born
between January 1, 1982 and December 31, 1991 who lived more than half of their childhood (years
aged 3–12) in the glorious decade of the 1990s" (HoodedStranger). I was born in 1983. I entered
kindergarten in 1988 and graduated high school in 2001. I was a child during the entire decade.
Urban dictionary further states, "Many children of the 90s feel that they lived good childhoods and
like to share their memories with each other of things like the Spice Girls and similar 1990s stuff"
(Why are all the pseudonyms). It is true that children of the nineties like to discuss things we liked
during the time we grew up, as I'm sure children of the seventies like to reminisce about disco and
bell bottoms. One thing that Urban Dictionary and other sources of this nature dismiss is what really
sets our upbringing apart from the rest. The nineties was a groundbreaking decade for music,
technology and entertainment and there were so many rapid changes made to everyday life. The
children of that decade experienced more changes in day–to–day life than any other ... Show more

During the nineties food was as much a novelty as a necessity. Some foods that all nineties kids
begged for were chocolate Wonder Balls, Crystal Pepsi, and of course a cereal that matched
whatever Saturday morning cartoons we would be watching. The nineties initiated the beginning of
the childhood obesity epidemic that is still going on today. Hedwig Lee states that, "Research
documents the emergence of the obesity epidemic among adolescents in the latter half of the 1990s,
and among young adults in 2000" (Holohan). The surge of food geared towards children during the
nineties plays a big role in the current obesity epidemic of the American

When I Was A Kid Growing Up From A Western Capitalistic...

  • 1. When I Was A Kid Growing Up From A Western Capitalistic... When I was younger, I was infamous. My teachers and peers characterized me as manipulative, and indeed I had a powerful ability to exploit those around me in order to get what I want. Over the years I have been less inclined to use this ability to persuade others. Through a series of learning experiences, I have found that manipulating people never yields positive results. As a child, each time I used this influence for my own benefit, I would be reprimanded in some form and therefore learned that this behavior was not socially acceptable. In particular, one incident stands out among the rest as a socializing moment, as it introduced me to socially acceptable behaviors and taught me to follow these norms. As a kid growing up in a western ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of using this knowledge of the social hierarchy to transcend these overpriced fads, I instead capitalized upon them. Middle school was, in all likelihood, the period in which people were most likely to fall victim to fleeting material fads. This could stem from insecurity at the age of puberty, and the need for adolescents to be liked by their peers. Additionally, as we grew older these trends became increasingly costly to follow. Black River Middle School in Chester, New Jersey fell victim to a trend in which Foohy erasers were the only socially acceptable erasers to use. Foohy erasers were multi–colored pencil top erasers that were in the shape of a monkey. In all honesty, these erasers were purely decorative due to the fact that their functionality as an eraser was extremely limited by their shape. Nevertheless, they were all the rage when I was in the sixth grade, and as previously mentioned, I acknowledged and capitalized upon the fact that these erasers were the only ones allowed by our social standards. Once I realized that Foohy erasers were becoming popular, I asked my mother to drive me to the supermarket in order to buy several packages of them. The next day, I came into school with my multi–colored bounty and gained the admiration of my peers. One of my friends stared at my erasers with a longing glance, and told me that her mom would not purchase Foohy erasers for her, as they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Sherry Turkle How people interact with each other can us tell a lot about society. It can tell us about their interests and goals in life. In Sherry Turkle, Selections from "Selections from Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other", Turkle explores Artificial intelligence and how humans interact with it. Turkles explores how people (specifically children) are able to develop love for AI's how their relationship develops. Talking more specifically about love, Barbara Fredrickson, in Selections from "Love 2.0: How Our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything We Feel, Think, Do, and Become" shares her research about her discovery of "love 2.0" and how the old idea of love is outdated and misunderstood. It is easier for people to have conversations that they are able to control and achieve desired outcomes without dealing with real human emotions that can be daunting. People can experience the little moments of "positivity resonance" through artificial intelligence much easier, faster and at their leisure. With enough difficulties in the world, people try to avoid getting into relationships that will give them negative experiences. Some people have experiences which present them with too much friction with one another. Technology provided us with ways we can experience interactions that present less friction, interactions like the ones with Artificial intelligence. As Turkle says in her essay "At the robotic moment, more than ever, our willingness to engage with the inanimate does not depend on being deceived but wanting to fill in the blanks" (459). With the new technology advancing, more and more people are willing to give it a try to fulfill their desire of connecting with others. It offers the readers the plausibility of the phenomena that occurs in the world of Star Wars. The book is divided into five chapters excluding the introduction. She proceeds from environments to aliens and androids to spaceships and weapons to end with a chapter on "The Force". The first Chapter is called Planetary Environments. It has four essays and seven section, sections headings include "You Can't Have an Empire without Real Estate" and "The Bright Center of the Universe" and "A Planet a Day Keeps the Empire Away" etc. The topics she covers in this chapter includes things like formation of planets, ... "When Teddy Bears have their Picnic" reviews the physiological and psychological characteristics of koalas, chimpanzees and Ewoks, and "Did You Leave Your Headlights On?" describes and evaluates Jawas and Sand People, optics, Photoreceptors and Bioluminescence. There is one significant point, that it is highly unlikely for aliens from different planets to survive in a single environment such as the Mos Eisley cantina. Example, Jabba being a slug supposedly moves using a mavelike motion by creating a coating of secreted slime, but in the 1997 version of the Episode IV, Jabba is seen easily moving around in the xerophytic environment of Tatooine where he should in fact be desiccating. The third chapter of the book is named "Droids" and is comprised of eight topics and two essays. The section "Wheels or Legs" assesses the relationship between body shape, coordination and locomotive capabilities of the droids. Neopets Case Study Essay Neopets – Case Study As per the Neopets website, Neopets is an online youth–focused virtual world whose primary focus is to allow members to create and take care of virtual pets. In addition to virtual pets, it also offers games, auctions, trades and messaging. Neopets have been created in 11 languages and generates more than 5 billion pageviews per month. With nearly 200 games, weekly contests, discussion boards, plots and thousands of virtual items to collect, Neopets members are as passionate about the site as they are about their virtual pets. There might soon be a 3D virtual pet website which might take away market share from Neopets and Neopets might see its adopter surfing to a 3D virtual pet websites. Promotion strategy for Neopets : Neopets has traditionally depended on word of mouth and viral marketing which is a subset of word of mouth to increase its spread. As per Hindle, Tim (2008, p205) viral marketing involves choosing a small group of well–connected individuals to launch a product or service via the internet or their mobile phones. The idea is that their approval will spread rapidly via their online network of connections, create a buzz around the product being marketed and result in millions of sales. This form of marketing has grown further with the popularity of social networks like Facebook. Keep Your Thrabs Still When I M Talking To You Analysis In David Carr's essay "Keep Your Thumbs Still When I'm Talking to You," he explains what people nowadays normally do at social events and how it reflects on the people surrounding them. In the 21st century most people believe everything is about technology, every second there are new updates or more news feed to scroll down to and so many people are caught up on what other people are doing, rather than what is going on around them. Carr describes situations in which people are compulsively looking at their screen while they are out at a social event, which is something that is known to be fashionably rude. Carr's argument is if society does not realize the respect they need to offer then, if in the 21st century people are going to social events to just stare at their phone screens all night, how will it be in the future? Carr uses examples that happen on a day to day basis, which makes it seem as if it is the new trend to be rude during social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although everyone should be up to date with the newest technology out there and socially involved in society, where does the line cross? Many individuals either do not realize it or just do not care. Carr refers a quote written by Anthony De Rosa, "It's fine when you're at home or at work when distracted by things, but we need to give that respect to each other back."(385). De Rosa points out things society does not realize, answering a call during the middle of a conversation may make the person feel unimportant, but if it's vice versa the feelings would be mutual. Usually when someone is looking at their phone it is because they are bored, so other people will think they are boring. Some individuals do not even excuse themselves from the conversation which is considered to be rude, but these individuals do not realize that it bothers certain people. Just because technology is advancing does not mean it should just replace social contact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Sherry Turkle's Project Classroom Makeover : Analysis In "Project Classroom Makeover", Cathy Davidson demonstrates the potential benefits that can come from the implementation of technology in the current educational paradigm. Furthermore, in Sherry Turkle's "selections from Alone Together", Turkle discusses the unique relationship between a child and his or her artificially intelligent toys, some of which include Tamagotchis and Furbies. Interestingly, children give these toys special treatment relative to other toys. If the special treatment encourages positive behavior, then these toys could be potentially implemented into the current educational paradigm as a new form of technology. Therefore, the real question is whether there are benefits of allowing children to play with these toys, or will they cause more harm than good? Toys like the Tamagotchis and Furbies are artificially intelligent toys that interact with children by "responding...[to their] behavior" (Turkle, 476). Often, children treat their Tamagotchis and Furbies differently than their other toys. In fact, the "other toys...are usually put aside" when broken, whereas, with their Tamagotchis and Furbies, children worry about the toys' health and artificial life. Furthermore, Tamagotchis and Furbies "demand attention..." and without it "...they will not survive" (Turkle 464). These toys require work, and if a child is not willing to work, the toy will die. Moreover, work is not something many children enjoy doing. So, what makes the Tamagotchis and Furbies so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are examples used throughout the entirety of the book that the author herself experienced during interviews that clearly show how our society is evolving in these postmodern times. "Alone Together" goes into detail explaining how people today are interacting with technology and how it is greatly changing our society. Theory Overview Before explaining postmodernism, modernism needs to explained some first. Modernism believes in the absolutes of things such as beauty art and music. There is only one set way to do these things. Music is things such as Mozart and Bach. There is a clear objective of linear thinking that is to be stuck to and anything ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sherry Turkle begins the book by talking about our relationships with robots and how it is going to change our society. Robots are another way for us to interact. We can interact with them as if they are people and they can assist us in our day to day lives. This is an example of our society being fragmented as it is another way for us to interact in society. Sherry Turkle writes about our interaction with robots and how that is increasing and how our interactions with humans are decreasing. Through her interviews she learns that some people are much more comfortable talking with a robot or computer program than with a human. There is a computer program called ELIZA that people can interact with and the program is set to respond in certain ways. Turkle found out that people would start telling the program their secrets and issues within just a few interactions. This is much quicker than people will open up during therapy with a human. This can show a shift of people potentially interacting more with programs like this as a form of therapy rather than taking the traditional route and talking to a therapist. Childrens toys such as tamagotchis show "emotions" and in turn make the children feel actual emotions. The tamagotchis will ask for and require care from the children to "survive". This elicited actual emotions from the kids as they would get happy to care and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For whatever reason, this toxic state of mind stuck with me through my elementary–school years. My Lebanese lunches, my parents' accents, and the Arabic music that ran through my house were obstacles and social barriers that I had to avoid. Now, people live in the society where they cannot communicate without technology. In the modern society, a newly invented technology gets a power to control and lead the trends. According to New York Post, "Apple reported that newly launched iPhone X, which has been sold at the price of $999, sparked a record quarterly revenue of $88.3 billion – and pushed the cost of an average iPhone to $796. In her essay, Turkle takes about the use of robots and technologies, and how those have been impacted the development of human beings. "Alone Together" can be divided into two parts. The first half of the book is about the development of social robots and how those robotic technologies are applied in human life. Turkle shares the results of the research of how robotic toys, such as Furby and Tamagotchi, affect children and adolescents. Through some examples and historical events of technology, she explains how the robot has been developed and enhanced for people, especially younger generation, started to think the robot not much as machine, but more as friends. The definition of human changed throughout the decades: while human was special because they can think, after thinking computer had been launched and disseminated, human became special because they can 'feel'. On the other hand, the second half of the book is all about social networks formed on the Internet, and how human beings are exposed to the online world. Turkle explores the increasing dependence on the online world and discusses about how human beings disentangle their lives in the real world and the online world. She also emphasizes the communication between each other. Sherry Turkle : How Computers Change The Way We Think Sherry Turkle's essay "How Computers Change the Way We Think" discuss how the growing popularity of technology is disconnecting us from our brain, loved ones and may be invading our private life. Electronics might not have been as helpful as we previously thought. Technology has made it easier for us to fix our mistakes but not learn from them. Turkle had met professors at MIT when students had transitioned from slide rules to calculators. The teachers had all exclaimed that students had become sloppy. "Professors insisted that required students maintain a mental sense of scale, whereas those who relied on calculators made frequent mistakes in orders of magnitude." We are too quick to have technology solve our everyday problems instead of resolving it ourselves to better understand our mistake in the first place. We no longer question or have interest in how technology can handle our tasks, but wonder what else it can accomplish on its own. "When people say that something is transparent, they mean that they can see how to make it work, not that they know how it works." Turkle states "For never has our world been more complex, hybridized and global." Since we become so dependent on items to make our daily lives stress free, could mean future generations will not know the mental exercise of resolving a conflict without computers. In Alone Together by Sherry Turkle, she explains that through games and artificial intelligence, humans have been changing the way that both children and adults think and feel, thus bridging the gap between emotional machines (humans) and intelligent machines (computers). Turkle is able to show how her experiences through working at MIT in the 70's to how children perceive things as alive enough in the form of a video game, as a way of explaining that gap between man and machine has been getting closer and closer. The first chapter offers a strong viewing of how humans have been trying to close the gap of emotional and intelligent machines since the 1970's. In the first section of the first chapter, "Nearest Neighbors", Turkle explains how Weizenbaum's program ELIZA, which was being analyzed at MIT, was being used to show how words can be strung together. The students were inputting dialogue to the program, and it was responding. If the user would say something about their mother, the program would respond with a response that a human may offer. "ELIZA had no model of what a mother might be or any way to represent the feeling of anger. What it could do was take strings of words and turn them into questions or restate them as interpretations" (31). This model of thought would go on to be used throughout the attempts of ... Human interactions with each other and with tangible objects such as technological products, help create relationships among human beings themselves, and among human beings and physical objects. From these relationships, most people have either faced acceptance or rejection from the people or things they have related with. Some of these are results of differences in what is conventionally accepted as normal while others are just results of unfulfilled expectations from the relationships created. In Andrew Solomon's article "Son," he discusses that his mother modified his identity at an early age, which caused the struggle between his real identity formation and the expectation that his mother and the society had. For Solomon, relationships can sometimes disintegrate on the basis that one's real identity does not conform to what conventionally passes as normal, because a majority of people are not accepting to standards that differs from normal. In contrast, in Sherry Turkle's article "Selection from Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology And Less from Each Other," she discusses how expectations from human relationships, e.g. love and emotional connections, create new fronts of identity formations with technology when human beings do not meet such expectations. From these two articles, the ideology of identity formation is a variable of relationships. • 33. Using Handheld Breath Guiding Device We, Geoff Shellady, Abby Magner, and Kelly Norfleet, engineering students at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, have invented a handheld breath–guiding device. It is an electronic tool that displays visual animations with which users sync their breathing patterns in order to ease stress and anxiety. Its digital, handheld format provides users with easy access to the device whenever it is needed. Many people are negatively impacted by anxiety and stress on a daily basis. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety is the most prevalent mental illness in the United States, affecting 18% of the population. These disorders can occur unexpectedly and cause a stress response in the brain that leads to rapid breathing. In the past, systems have been created to attempt to train a user's breathing. For example, the Lamaze breathing coach patented by Denise Fletcher in 2013 is a software application, which shows the desired breathing pattern and displays the user's actual breathing by using the microphone on the device. (US Patent No. 13/858,999, 2014) The user must then attempt to synchronize his or her breathing with the desired pattern. This application, however, can be ineffective, considering that many individuals do not have access to a phone or electronic device on which to run the program, particularly young children. Trying to synchronize breathing patterns may also heighten stress rather than reducing it. Additionally, phones ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the specific psychological processes Turkle describes involves a shift between "a psychology of projection to a new psychology of engagement" with these machines (Turkle, 470). Through her observations, she concludes that when children play with a Furby they "continually assess [the] Furby's 'emotional' and 'physical' state [because] children fervently believe that the [one] who loves his or her Furby best will be most loved in return" (Turkle, 470). Through this quote, Turkle shows that the children do not treat the Furby like any other toy because the Furby has a dynamic layer of wellbeing that children need to pay attention to. This changing aspect leads children to spend a lot of time and grow really close with their Furby. Turkle's word choice of "fervently" connotes a sense of enthusiasm children have towards the fact that they truly believe that their Furbies's have life–like characteristics because Furbies, "present as having their own needs and inner lives" (Turkle, 470). Since Furbies are presented as having these life–like traits, children tend to view them more as human than a toy. This leads children to form a psychology of engagement with their Furby because they perceive the Furby as being able to share emotion and a bond like humans. Thus, the psychology of projection and engagement that forms within children creates a seemingly inseparable relationship between children and their Furbies. The psychology of projection and engagement relates itself to the gift economy because it serves a foundation in the creation of a relationship. Lethem introduces the concept of ... They are able to express artificial emotions that seem real to the user. In "Alone Together" by Sherry Turkle we see how sociable robots interact with children. They begin to feel emotions that were once exclusive to human interaction. In the narrative "An Army of One: Me" by Jean Twenge we see how prominent the generation gap is. Those under the age of thirty–five tend to focus more on themselves and making sure they feel worthy. Twenge appropriately titles this generation as "Generation Me," highlighting the fact that boosts of "self– esteem" leads to a rise in individualistic focus. Parents expose their children to toys that industries manufacture to fill the emotional needs children have at a young age. This consequently decreases the need for human interaction. As technology develops and become more "alive," researchers are able to find what children desire and are able to give those desires to them in a toy. These new toys shape how children think and grow, directly affecting them for their entire lives. We never leave the house without our cell phones and what's worse, we text or call people who are in the same house as us. While we are with our family and friends, we are also living in another world, where everyone accepts us for who we are through our cellular devices. Using our mobile devices, we can transport ourselves to different realities that we wish to have. These are online games that allow us to create our own avatar and live the life that we want to live. In that world, no one will be able to judge us for how we are. We are embracing ourselves through simulated lives with avatars and simulated relationships through virtual connections. • 53. My Reaction Was A Sick Feeling Of Shock Essay Sadie got an "F". My reaction was a sick feeling of shock. "What?!, . . . Wait, what?!" I kept repeating the phrase into the phone as if I had never heard of the sixth letter of the alphabet before. Like it was a concoction of my wife 's imagination. Once home, she showed me the proof; a half– sheet of college–ruled, spiral–bound, white paper with numbering down the left side of a red margin followed by a series of answers neatly written on the right. Four of the answers were marked with a large "X" and a red number 60 circled at the top. If I don't write about my other daughter Ella much, it's because she takes to Decatur like a duck to water. She's made more friends easier, finishes homework faster and is further along in the school scene than Sadie ever was at the same age. Which is surprising, because Sadie is that focused kid you'll likely find in a quiet place reading a book. Ella, on the other hand, is likely to be swinging from the chandelier, screaming wildly and naked as a newborn. But Ella had a head start. She walked Decatur halls for three years before she took a class. Ella knows every teacher by sight. She knew our "Zero Excuse tolerance" policy regarding homework years before it mattered for her. Sadie was her vanguard. If this were NASCAR race, Ella would be drafting. But there's something else. We've always wrestled with whether Decatur was appropriate for Sadie. We never thought of it, or any school, as our manifest destiny. We found Decatur as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Project Classroom Makeover Analysis In "Project Classroom Makeover", Cathy Davidson demonstrates the potential benefits that can come from the implementation of technology in the current educational paradigm. Furthermore, in Sherry Turkle's "selections from Alone Together", Turkle discusses the unique relationship between a child and his or her artificially intelligent toys, some of which included Tamagotchis and Furbies. Interestingly, children give these toys special treatment relative to other toys. If the special treatment encourages positive behavior, then these toys could be potentially implemented into the current educational paradigm as a new form of technology. Therefore, the real question is are there benefits of allowing children to play with these toys, or will there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As discussed before, as long as these toys do not shut down in response to pain and do not overly express their pain by crying, these toys should be safe in a school environment. Also, if these toys respond to behavior like the Tamagotchis and Furbies, then it will be beneficial to allow children to play with these toys during school time. This is due to the ability of "computers...[that can] turn children into philosophers" (Turkle, 463). For the Duke university students, computers enabled them to create new applications for the iPod. Therefore, the computers helped turn them into a type of philosopher, one that thinks innovatively. The iPod experiment is a perfect example of benefits of applying technology to the education system because it did in fact turn young adults into a type of philosophers. For children, computers turned them into a type of philosophers by transforming them "into caretakers" (Turkle, 464). Philosophers of this type thinks emotionally and understands that all life, even "digital life, can be emotionally roiling" (Turkle, 464). When children play with their Tamagotchis and Furbies, they can experiment their actions with toys and not with people. This allows for them to understand the consequences of mistreating ... Plato's Allegory Of The Cave Plato, a famous Greek philosopher who wrote the 'Allegory of the Cave', attempted to answer some of these philosophical questions, most notably about the nature of reality. He tells the 'Allegory of the Cave' as a conversation between his mentor, Socrates, who inspired many of Plato's philosophical theories, and one of Socrates' students, Glaucon. They discuss the meaning of reality and how we as humans can be blinded by the dark shadows of reality. The shadows of the objects in the story represented society's way of telling us what is real, and what is normal. However, when he added a little plot twist and said if one of the cavemen were released and got out of the cave, the real reality would be such an overwhelming sight to see that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Society makes a fool out of people by convincing them to continually buy their products. In Plato's story it said, "And when he came out into the light, that his eyes would be filled with its beams so that he would not be able to see even one of the things that we call real?" (2). This statement confirmed society's theory of glossing over reality to create this unreachable fantasy, and finding the courage to overlook all of it and see things as they really are. Glaucon asked, "Do you mean to say that we must do them wrong, and compel them to live an inferior life when the better is in their power?" (5), which tells us that we as a people have the ability to alter the minds of society and place them in a direction where they see things in their natural state, nothing altered to fit the image of popularity. If people want a better life, they have to step up and be the change that everyone is longing for to happen. It all starts with one voice. • 59. Tim Wu Project Classroom Makeover Technology connects people from all corners of the world. Inventions like the web and the internet has been heralded as the greatest inventions of man. The twenty first century is a fast paced world, with information available at a person's fingertips. With this new drastic change in society, advocates of education reformation, like Cathy Davidson, pushes for education to be more modernized. In her essay "Project Classroom Makeover", she points out the outdated education system, and the benefits, technology can have on the failing American education system. However, Tim Wu, instead of praising technology as an open independent well of information, in his essay "Father and Son" he criticizes companies like Apple that aims to restrict the freedom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Technology should not be completely shunned, with proper use there may come a time where it can be paired with education in a way Davidson envisions it. She writes "It was also an investment in student–led curiosity, whose object was not a hunk of white plastic, but the very nature of interactivity, crowdsourcing, customizing, and inspired inquiry–driven problem solving" (Davidson 54). If technology were to be free and it was under the control of the people instead of executives from big companies, then students do have the power to creatively look for information that may serve useful purposes. However, currently some technology is under the control of companies like Apple, which promotes a closed system. Also, just like how a completely closed system can restrict and narrow thoughts, so does a completely open system. Wu writes, "'If in doubt, the Web had to be 'unconstraining.' I saw the lots of systems that made you work in a certain way, and they all died.' On the other hand, he wanted to avoid the shortcoming of a 'utopian commune with no structure, which doesn't work because nobody actually takes out the garbage" (Wu 544). That's by Design" in which she illustrated that the app for Instagram created by Greg Hochmuth contributed to a "network effect" (2015: 1). This very "network effect" involved the simple notion that greater interest in something would result in even more use for that very product (Singer 2015: 1). The app for Instagram, like the tamagotchi, emphasized convenience as the tamagotchi could easily accompany one due to its small size and the app could be accessed by anyone possesing a cell phone or access to an electronic device (Allison 2006: 164). Also, the app and tamagotchi continued to help eliminate cultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As variety and option tend to lead to the peaking of consumer interest since human nature inevitably values choice and the allure of something being new or revolutionary, it is easy to see how interest can be closely linked with consumption. Singer stated that, "In its first 24 hours, the app was downloaded more than one million times" (2015: 1). This points to the universal nature of the product stemming largely from the ease at which the product can be accessed. Also, Boush and Loken pointed out that a sense of familiarity with the product regarding the brand largely contributed to the consumption adding to the fact that the product is already highly convenient to purchase (1991: 16). Boush and Loken stated, "Capitalizing on an established brand name is a growth strategy that seems destined to increase in popularity," which accentuated the idea that convenience in the use of a product strongly linked with a brand not only involved the product itself yet involved the brand as well (1991: 16). Thus, it is seemingly clarified that convenience in use helped to make products, brands, and trends beyond culture, for the appeal to innate human tendencies in clinging to what is comfortable, known, or familiar is beyond cultural norms. Allison further clarifies that convenience in use is a key component for making a product, brand, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Japan for a while has been displaying fashion that intrigues us and influences us in many ways and what people don't know is that of these fashions there are different communities and subcultures of fashion that these people in the pictures conform to. Japan has a vast array of street fashion styles and trends. They are all mixed with elements of traditional, foreign and/or local styles. Their street fashion cultures vary from the tan skinned Ganguro girls to the victorian styled Lolitas. One of the most popular and biggest Japanese fashion influencers were the high school girls of Kogyaru. What exactly did these schoolgirls do to become one of the biggest trendsetters of Japan? The answers are within their signature style, Japan's popular magazines, and ability to popularize certain products. Kogyaru style was started by and became very popular among high school girls. One of those sacrifices is the time we spend with others to develop connections that lead to developing empathy for one another. This sacrifice of time leads us to have weaker ties with people around us. Connections with families, friends, and neighbors became weaker and occur less often, however, the human desire for love and empathy has not changed. As described by Fredrikson when she says " Just as your supplies of clean air and nutritious food forecast how long you'll walk on this earth–and whether you'll thrive or just get by–so does your supply of love" (107). People need to experience what Fredrickson calls "positivity resonance" in their lives, which is why people will find ways to try and achieve this resonance. ... This can be seen in Turkle's essay when she first introduced ELIZA, the program that engages in dialogue. she says " People used the program as a projective screen on which to express themselves. Yes, I thought, they engaged in a personal conversation with ELIZA, but in a spirit of 'as if'" (458). Therefore, researchers at MIT trusts the making of 'caring machines'. For this reason, Turkle indicates roboticists are not by any means the only individuals with this thought, there has been chatter from others that is not in the robotic world (2015). Therefore, humans trust the idea of having robots taking care of the elderly rather than people. The reasons is that humans are thought to be cruel where the overseer can steal or be abusive (Turkle 2015). Strangely enough, this shows grown ups have turned out to be so contributed with technology, believing a robot can talk and care a for a person. Additionally, it demonstrates a discrimination against mankind, due to not trusting the ability of a human being. Furthermore, this creates the lack of living life and facing reality. Tamagotchi Research Paper Every child's favorite "pet" When ever I think of my childhood there is always one memory that always pops into my head; playing with my tamagotchi all throughout elementary school. A tamagotchi is a small oval–shaped device that consists of a screen and a few buttons. What made the tamagotchi appealing to me was the concept of the egg hatching when you first start the game and you care for it until it grows its wings/"dies." How well the child cares for the pet will determine how healthy and well–behaved the pet is. Having my pets "get their wings"/die made me feel a sense of disappointment in myself while mourning the loss of them. Feeling very sad over their "death" is what essentially caused me to start to improve on my nurturing skills in my opinion. In the beginning, there was great controversy over the tamagotchi and whether it was too much work for children, and if it was good for them to experience real emotions from the virtual pet's "death" or not. According to Dorin, the tamagotchi suggests that life can be suspended when the care is inconvenient, but i find this to be the opposite. When the care is not good, and the tamagotchi's life is ended, that shows the children that you cannot "suspend" a life, and you need to give sufficient effort in order to maintain life.Even though there is an option to reset the toy whenever you want, it still would not give you the exact same tamagotchi in the end which would show the child that there is no way to get that "life" back. In my opinion, the tamagotchi is a great alternative to getting a real pet for a child at first. When children have no basic nurturing skills, we should not be giving them a real life to manage ,such as a dog, and letting the dog rely on the child for its necessities when the child has no ... According to Urban dictionary the definition of a 90's kid is: "A person born between January 1, 1982 and December 31, 1991 who lived more than half of their childhood (years aged 3–12) in the glorious decade of the 1990s" (HoodedStranger).
