Nowadays, many people including, doctors, teachers and parents are more aware on the myths and facts about ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
2. Myths or misconceptions
Nowadays, many people including, doctors, teachers and parents are more aware of ADHD or Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. But majority still believe that there is no such disorder. This is not true
because ADHD, since its first discovery during the early 1900’s, is still being studied by medical
professionals until today because of its existence. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that 2-3
percent of children around the world have this disorder.
There are also other myths or misconceptions about ADHD. Some of these are:
• ADHD is the result of bad discipline. ADHD is a brain condition. It has nothing to do with parenting or a
result of bad schooling. Although, parents and teachers play a big role. They could either help the child
by correct guidance or ignoring the symptoms and make matters worse.
• ADHD is forever. This disorder has no cure, but when diagnosed early can be controlled and managed.
Through frequent medication and therapy, the symptoms of ADHD in children will lessen over the years
and are barely visible during adulthood.
3. Effects of adhd
• A child with ADHD is only making an excuse not to finish tasks. A child with ADHD can’t focus on tasks
or assignments not because he wants to, but because he is unable to. One of the signs of ADHD in
children is the inability to focus on anything and is inattentive because a part of his brain that is
responsible for these abilities is not functioning well. In fact, they often get frustrated and depressed
when they can’t finish a task no matter how much they want to.
• Ignore ADHD, it will not affect my child’s life. ADHD, if not treated, has a big impact on the different
aspects of your child’s life. During his school years, he will find it hard to learn during class and harder
for him to make friends. Education and social relationship are vital for your child’s development. His
family relationship will also be affected, and it’s not only him who will suffer but also you and the rest
of the family as well. And once your child grows up, it will be harder for him to keep a job, or find a job
for that matter.
4. Using stimulants
• A child with ADHD taking stimulants is often drug abused. A child taking stimulants, with the proper
brand and dosage, decreases the symptoms of ADHD. When taken consistently and monitored closely,
will help the child manage his behaviour and become more attentive in school and at home compared
with a child who’s not taking medication, is very difficult to handle. But medications should be coupled
with the loving guidance from parents, teachers and other adults who see the child regularly. This is to
ensure the child’s steady progress for a normal life.
