Facial paralysis, or Bell's palsy, has an incidence rate of 20-30 per 100,000 people per year. Most cases are peripheral nerve palsies, affecting males and females equally and more commonly the left side of the face. The average age is 40 years old and 90% of patients recover. Diagnosis involves examining symptoms like facial droop and numbness, and tests can include an EMg, ENG, CT or MRI to determine if the paralysis is central or peripheral in origin. Treatment depends on the cause but may include corticosteroids or antivirals to reduce inflammation.
