2. SOUND AND LANGUAGE AND
TYPOGRAPHYSOUND:
o For the Sound in my production I decided to follow the typical conventions of other videos. I chose not to use
ambient or diegetic sounds and added my main track during the editing process. I chose to only use Non-
diegetic sound as this made the editing process ‘easier’ in the idea that I wouldn’t have to worry about
matching sounds up with shots enabling the continuity to flow. The non-diegetic track, however, is made to
look diegetic as the visuals would suggest the band would be singing and playing the instruments whilst
filming.
Language:
o The language in my production is not explicit which does, in fact, challenge the usual conventions of my
chosen Genre. Colloquial language is often seen throughout metal lyrics to attract a teenage and older audience
as to also demonstrate chaos and mayhem. However, I chose to use a track without explicit language. This is
because I wanted to appeal to a wider audience and the use of non explicit material would allow me to do so.
This would enable me to also include a younger audience whilst still appealing to my targeted and traditional
audience.
Typography:
o The typography used helped me create synergy through my main and ancillary tasks. I chose to create my own
typography which would be unique to my chosen band. This is a well known convention throughout all music
genres as it makes a band recognisable to their fan base. For my typography I chose to use white, block
3. NARRATIVE AND IDEOLOGY
Narrative:
o I decided against having a narrative in my video. This doesn’t follow or challenge the usual
conventions of my chosen genre as both types of video are regularly seen. I chose to not have a
narrative in my performance as this could convey mixed ideology and make the video look
messy. The performance aspect was to be enhanced by the crowd being present as this would
make the band look better to an audience. The performance, without an aiding narrative, also
allows an audience to relate to the band on a personal level as they might be seen to share
common interests and traits. It also strips the band of their fame and again makes them more
relatable gaining a larger audience. The use of strictly performance videos is mostly seen
among older videos and bands like Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden but also newer bands like
Bury Tomorrow and Chelsea Grin. This allows bands to relate to their targeted audience and
grow a fan base for the band, music and members.
Ideology:
o The ideology conveyed throughout my video, lyrics and ancillary tasks is that of chaotic fun to
help relieve yourself from the everyday troubles. This is primarily seen through the lyrics by
Surrender the Coast and is aided by the main product. To convey this ideology I wanted the
crowd in my video to depict mayhem and overwhelming happiness which was achieved through
the use of Mosh Pits and dancing to the music as a group. I also wanted the band to look
similar to again depict saviours and role models for the younger audiences. This was achieved
through their energy and body language/facial expressions as this allowed them to have
chaotic fun on set. This also makes mayhem and letting loose look good to an audience and
4. MISE-EN-SCENE AND
ICONOGRAPHY
Mise-En-Scene:
o When looking at mise-en-scene I decided to follow the conventions set by other performance
based videos. This was aspects like Low Level ambient lighting, isolated with little scenery other
than plant life, casual clothing and secluded locations. I decided to follow the usual conventions
as it, in effect, makes my production look more professional and realistic .
Iconography:
o When looking at the iconography of my production I also decided to make it similar to existing
work. This was the usage of fast pace editing to connote adrenaline, an eerie but ambiently lit
location to connote some sort of mystery also giving a gothic sense.
5. CAMERA AND EDITING.
Shots:
o Extreme Long Shots to show overviews of locations. Also shows the Band as a whole.
o Close Ups of the band members and their instruments to convey emotions and help an
audience relate with members.
o Shot reverse shot sequences again to show different members and instruments.
Editing:
o Fast pace editing to connote adrenaline, commonly seen throughout the genre.
o extra speed shots again to connote the adrenaline and act of the music.
o Reverse shots to replay certain acts, adds another sense of energy and informs viewers of the
band.
o slow motion shots during pits to give the viewer a feel for the motion of the shot and allows them
to visually imitate the crowd.
