Band photos

We can tell that the band here (The Wombats) are
a pop indie band because of the bright colours of
their clothing and also their hair for the indie
aspect. The long hair is usually associated with
both indie or rock music but the colours and the
style of their clothing are associated with pop. The
high key lighting in the photo is also linked with
pop and upbeat songs. This uses the rule of thirds
with one of the band members in each third. The
band are acting casual in public and due to the
woman on the phone in the shows that the people
are not running and chasing after them because
they are a niche audience and not desired by all.
The fact that the band has chosen to shoot the
photo in the day is a contradiction to the normal
rock genre.
The photo of Eminem uses the rule of thirds
because he is positioned towards the right of the
frame. The fact that we can see his bicep in the
shot in the primary optical area and the way that it
is tattooed could make us think that he is a rap
artist because that is stereotypical for ‘rappers’ the
low key lighting show us the mystery of him. The
fact that he has his face illuminated tell us that he
isn’t afraid of what people think and that he is not
somebody that should be crossed. The main colour
of the shot is black and this has been used to show
the seriousness of the man, black is a powerful
colour and this is used to show the power of
Eminem himself.
This is a promotion shot for the band My Chemical
Romance and American rock band. The band is
situated in front of a black wall and all wearing
black to represent the dark side to their music this
is a key signifier of rock music. As we go from left
to right it goes upwards. This picture also uses the
rule of thirds on how the band is separated. Also
due to the fact they are wearing ties they could be
rebellious school children, this is reinforce with
them lined up in front of brick wall like children
that have been told off. However the lead singer
isn’t in the primary optical area even though he is
in the middle of the shot so he wants to be the
centre of attention. The fact that the band
members are using direct mode of address looking
straight at the camera to create a relationship with
the audience.

This photo of Lady Gaga uses the rule of thirds
really well as she is placed all the way to the right
in the last third and there is an empty section of
the frame that is filled with the mist that is coming
off of her dress. The fact she is wearing an
ostentatious dress shows that she is mainstream
pop but can also appeal to the niche audiences and
can be advertise to everyone along with the high
key lighting that makes her seem angelic along
with that the mist could be like a cloud. The cloud
could be ambiguous to show the mystery behind
her because she doesn’t like to reveal much
because she hides her real nature behind the star
of Lady Gaga. In the photo due to the dress and the
stance she looks quite elegant and this is how she
wants to be portrayed.
This photo of the indie band Foster The People
uses low key lighting and they are in shadows and
are looking away from the camera which adds the
mystery to the band. The band is in the primary
optical area and also in the first third of the
picture. So we see the band first and then scan
across to the empty space which can see the
setting of the photo and shows the urban setting
which can be seen to add to their indie electronic
feel. This empty space can represent the emptiness
in their lives and how they are longing for
something that they cannot reach only see.
This photo of Kanye West uses balance on how he
is in the middle of the shot leaning to the left,
however because of his arm the shot is balanced.
The high key lighting shows that he sings upbeat
songs but the clothes that he is wearing and the
colour of his skin could represent that he sings RnB
or rap (which he does) songs. He is placed at the
top of the frame in the primary optical area and as
you go down you see his costume. He is looking
straight at the camera and the audience to show
that he is trying to create a relationship with the
audience.
