Image 1:
The image of The Arctic Monkeys appeals to their audience through the use of colours. The
greys and blacks symbolise the genre of their music, being a mix between indie and rock,
and their niche target audience. The lead singer, Alex Turner, is immediately identified as
the protagonist within the image by the way he is positioned at the front of the picture. The
lighting around him also appears to be brighter than how it is around the other band
members, making him the main focal point within the image, which also signifies his
leadership and status.
Image 2:
The image of Florence and the Machine uses binary opposition to symbolise her quirky and
unique personality which is also portrayed in her music. She is lay on a pink bed surrounded
by flowers and is wearing a flowing dotty skirt showing pale bruised legs. Both create an
image of innocence and have connotations of childhood which then contrast with her dark
eyes and stern facial expression. This disorientates the audience in a way that her music also
does through the lyrics in her songs, meaning both the image and her music can be
interpreted in different ways.

Image 3:
The image of Kanye West is simple but still conveys an image of confidence and cockiness,
as he is looking past the camera, which represents the type of artist he is. His music is
controversial, and often causes controversy within the media industry due to the topics
explored in his songs. He wears sunglasses to cover his eyes, which creates a shield between
the audience and himself as some people believe the eyes are the key to your soul, and by
creating a barrier he is not conveying any emotion within the image. However, he might not
be showing any emotion himself but the symbolisation of the red love heart on his chest
emphasises his love and passion for what he does.
Image 4:
In the image of Lady Gaga the audience are immediately drawn to her hand in the primary
optical area. The positioning of her hand is straight away identified as her signature move
and creates a relationship with her fans through the image. She is an alternative artist and
from the clothing visible she is wearing leather and metal which symbolises this. The
extreme close up of her face is quite a personal image and this reflects her personality and
the way she performs, being open with her audience and talking/singing about her private
life.

Image 5:
The image of Ed Sheeran, a singer/songwriter, uses the rule of thirds to capture the
audience’s attention, instead of just using a portrait image of his face. He is stood in the
primary optical area meaning the audience are drawn to him first; however they are also
made familiar with his location giving more of an idea of what the image is about and
making it more interesting. His whole image e.g. clothing and scruffy hair is generic of a
young student and targets the audience his music is aimed at. As well as himself, the graffiti
on the wall is a main focal point for the image and gives his character an edgy, street, urban
vibe. The image is well lit and alongside everything else gives off a summery festival feel
which creates an atmosphere similar to that of his music.
Image 6:
The image of Coldplay is a professional image and reflects the status of the band, being well
respected and admired in the public eye. It’s a very simple image, with no distractions so the
audience’s attention isn’t taken away from the main focal point of the picture, which is the
band. The wires on the floor symbolise that they perform live with the use of instruments
such as guitars and keyboards. The low key level of lighting comes from four spotlights that
are shining on the four different members of the band creating atmospheric lighting, and
this mirrors the atmosphere in the music they produce. The proxemics in the picture, with
Chris Martin positioned at the front of the image, identifies him as the front man and gives
him a more superior status than the other three. The fact he is holding his arms out gives
the impression he is inviting the audience in and straight away forms a connection between
the two.

Image 7:
This image of Jessie J uses symmetry to resemble her
strong and bold character. This ensures that the
audience’s attention isn’t distracted by anything else in
the image, resembling her fem-fatale image portrayed
within the music industry. Her character is also
resembled in this way through the proxemics in the way
she is stood, she is central in the frame and is standing
with her legs apart and hands on her hips, creating a
barrier between the audiences exploring the rest of the
image. The use of the colour black in the primary optical
area has connotations of evil and heavy emotion which
is reflected through her music about her feelings and
love. The low key lighting and the use of shadowing
creates an atmosphere within the image.
Image 8:
One Direction are a young British band who became successful after coming third in a British
reality TV show, The Xfactor. The image portrays this through the use of the red bus in the
main focal point. The red bus is an iconic image of Britain and represents the band as
coming from that particular place. Also the colour red has connotations of love and warmth,
showing they love what they do and creating a relationship with their fans. The camera is
positioned below the band, making it a low angle shot from the cameras perspective,
symbolising that they are admired and respected and gives the impression of people looking
up to them. The image is a very stereotypical band image, with the formal clothing they are
wearing being very generic to British music and their ‘pop’ style.
