3. EMERGENCE
Rise in status
of decorative
artists around
the year 1875
A desire to
move into the
new century
with innovation
rather than
being held back
by nostalgia
Art Nouveau
began falling
out of fashion
Lead to the
formation of
Societé des
Artistes
Décorateurs
4. TRANSITION IN STYLE
Art Deco was a
response aesthetically
and philosophically to
the Art Nouveau style
and to the broader
cultural phenomenon
of modernism
Elaborate details,
delicate designs,
expensive materials
and production
methods were ill-suited
to an increasingly
more mechanized
modern world.
Art Deco works are
symmetrical,
geometric,
streamlined, often
simple, and pleasing to
the eye.
5. CHARACTERISTICS
Art Deco was
associated with both
luxury and modernity
Combined expensive
materials and
exquisite
craftsmanship put into
modernistic forms
The style was used to
decorate the first-class
salons of ocean liners,
deluxe trains, and
skyscrapers.
It was used around the
world to decorate the
great movie palaces of
the late 1920s and
1930s
6. Théâtre des Champs-Élysées
• Designed by Auguste Perret in 1910
• The first landmark Art Deco building completed in Paris
• Built of reinforced concrete with rectangular forms, straight lines, and decoration
on plaques of marble and stucco
• A radical departure from the Art Nouveau style
• Shockingly plain in appearance for those days
• Previously reinforced concrete had been used
only for industrial and apartment buildings
7. DID YOU KNOW?
From 1908 to 1910, 21-year old Le
Corbusier worked as a draftsman in
Perret's office, learning the
techniques of concrete construction.
Le Corbusier went on to master the
use of reinforced concrete which is
evident in a number of his nearly 75
projects.
1) Chrysler Building – Built 11 months before The Empire State building
2) Union Terminal – Cincinnati, Ohio, USA ; 3) The Mercury trains, meant to convey a sense of speed and modern technology, were a hallmark of streamline art deco design.
