Film Idea 1
ZOE BEESLEY
A working title:
So far formy title,Ihave decidedon‘Breakthrough’.Thisisbecause itlinkstothe storyline and
message of myfilm, the storyline beingaboytryingto make a scientificbreakthroughwiththe
unknownhelpof otherpeople influencinghisthoughtsonthe theory.
I may change my mindonthe title whenfilmingandeditingthe filmif Ithinkof somethingbetter
that will fitinwiththe film.
Length of film:
For the lengthof my film,Iwill aimforitto be at least6 minutes, howeverthis, maygooverbecause
the way inwhichI am filmingisthatthere are three charactersthat will eachhave a sectionto
themselveswhichwill consistof theirphysical appearance,theirpersonalityandtheirdailylife.For
each character, thiswill take uproughly2 minutes. There isalsoa sectionatthe end to conclude
whatit all meanswhichmaytake upanother2 minutes.
A short tagline:
I haven’tthoughtof a tagline yet,howeverIwantit tobe somethingtowiththe scientific
breakthroughwithoutrevealing ittothe audience,orIwouldlike ittobe aboutthat our actionscan
influenceotherpeople’slivesinanegative orpositive way.
Introduction to key characters:
Mia –
Mia character has neverreallyfittedinatschool, because she hasthoughtof herself asdifferentto
the others, and therefore decidedtoquit school aftershe finishedherGCSE’s.She hasbeenlivingby
herself forthe past6 monthsinhernextdoor neighbour’shouse while they’re travelingthe world.
She has beendiagnosedwithOCD because of herobsessionwithonlyneedingone of everythingin
herlife. She wearsall blackall of the time witha longblackcoat because she doesn’tfeel the need
to put anyeffortintowhatshe wears.
Luke –
Luke’scharacter isa 19 year oldteenager/adultwhowasthe popularguyat school,howeverhe now
justspendshistime withhisclose friends.Hisparentswere alwaysveryproudof hisatschool but
noware gettinga bitfrustratedwiththe facthe hasn’tdone anythingsince finishinghisA-Levels.
The majorityof time he spendsplayingfootballorhavingpokernightswithhisfriendsathishouse
fourtimesa week.
Charlie –
Charlie’s characterisa 17 year oldteenagerwholivesinanaverage house withhisaverage parents
whocare too much abouthimneedingatleastone friendinlife. He isveryclever andhasspentthe
past yearon tryingto crack a scientifictheory, andtherefore takingupall histime thathe couldhave
spent,inhismother’seyes,makingfriends.
Synopsis:
Act 1 -
The filmstarts withthe penultimate sceneof the characterof Charlie lookingveryshockedand
happy.Thiswill be a close upof hisface to easilyshow the expressiononhisface. Itwill thengoto
the beginningof the storywhere itshowsthe physical appearance, personalityanddailylifeof
‘Luke’.
Act 2 -
It will thenalsoshowthe physical appearance, personalityanddailylifeof ‘Mia’andthen‘Charlie’.
Act 3 -
In act three itwill showshotsof Charlie inthe schoolslabdoingexperimentsandfiguringout
equations, astohimtryingto crack the scientifictheory. The endingshotswill be the penultimate
shotthat was shownat the start of the filmandcarryingon fromthis tothe audience findingout
whathis scientificbreakthroughwas.
Target audience:
My targetaudience wouldbe teenagersagersagedbetween13and 17. Thisisbecause the
characters are aged aroundtheirage and woldtherefore appealtothemmore.
Withyoungand Rubicams4c’s model,I thinkthat the audience wouldmostlikely be the explorer
because theyfeel the needtotrynewthingsanddiscoverthings.Myfilmisabouta boy whois
tryingto discoversomethingsoitwouldappeal tothemmore.
On the NRS scale,I thinkthat mytarget audience wouldbe ‘E’because theyare the lowestandare
usuallyteenagersatschool andwouldtherefore appealtothemmore.
Form and style:
For my filmIwill be usinga camera to filmall of the shots.I wantto try and getshots that are mostly
still withnopanningorzoomingwiththe lenses. Thisisbecause Iamtakinginspirationfromthe
directorWes Anderson andhisstyle of filmingandediting.Iwill needamicrophone whenfilmingthe
verylastscene because thisisthe onlybitof dialogue inthe whole film. Whenrecordingthe
narrationI will alsouse a microphone. Iwill alsobe recording3differentinstruments,one foreach
of the characters, and the instrumentswillcome togetheratthe endto make one backingtrack.
Marketplace:
I thinkthat myfilmmaydo well,on‘shortof the week’asI haven’tseenanyfilmswithasimilar
storyline. Idon’tthinkthere couldbe asequel because Idon’tsee how Icould carry on the storyline
withoutusingdifferentcharactersorcompletelychangingthe storyline.
Draft script:
Draft Storyboard:
A working title:
For the title of my film,Ihave currentlydecidedon‘Waves’.Ihave chosen thisbecause itlinkswith
the storyline andmessage of myfilm. The message of myfilmistorespectthe seaso that youdon’t
endup introuble. The title linkstothe physical aspects(the sea) andthe ‘wavesof emotion’with
the characters.
Length of film:
For the lengthof my film, itwill probablybe around6 minutes.Thisisbecause there isonly2main
characters to focuson andtheyare togetherthe whole time. There will alsobe timeswhenitshows
time passingwhichwill shortenthe filmabit.A lotof the sceneswill be inthe waterwhichwill
shortensoit doesn’tdragon too much.
A short tagline:
I haven’tyetthoughtof a tag line, butI am thinkingof somethinglike ‘respectthe sea’,howeverthis
istoo similartothe RNLI’stagline of ‘respectthe water’,andI wouldn’twanttocreate any copyright
problems.
Introduction to key characters:
The father –
The fatherin the filmdoesn’thave averygoodrelationshipwithhisson, because he lefthimandhis
motherwhenhe wasyounger. However,he istryingtohave a good relationshipwithhimandmake
up the time thathe has missedwhilsthe wasgrowingup.
The son –
The son inthe filmisa veryarrogant teenagerwhothinkshe cangetaway withanything. He doesn’t
wantto try and have a goodrelationshipwithhisfatherbuthe isdoingitfor hismotherthatwants
himto try and he justwants herto be happy.
Synopsis:
Act 1 –
At the start of the film,Iwill have the fatherandson gettingready, atthe boyshouse, togo out
sailing.Theywill be shownputtingthe equipmentinthe carand drivingoff.Iwill alsobe filming
themturningupat the Boat Park andsettingthe boat upand puttingitin the water.
Act 2 –
In act 2, there will be shotsof the boysittingonthe boat withhisdad doingnothing, whilsthisdadis
doingall the workwithpullingthe sail andsteeringthe boat, andtryingtoget the boy involved. The
atmosphere will change more negativewhenthe weatherchangesandthe windpicksup. The dad
will gethitbythe pole attachedtothe sail (calledthe boom) andwill getknockedunconsciousinto
the water.
Act 3 –
At the start of act three, the sonwill jumpintothe seato try and save hisdad, howeverhe isunable
to pull himoutof the waterbecause of how highthe boatis now that theyare in the water. The boy
carry’s on holdinghisdaduprightandtriesto wake himup,but isunsuccessful,andare therefore
stranded.Time will passandeachcharacter will lookweaker, until the endwhentheyfloattowards
some rocks andthe boymanagesto pull eachof themout of the water.Theywill enduphavinga
goodrelationshipwitheachotheratthe endbecause of the traumaticexperience theyhave been
throughtogether.
Target Audience:
I thinkthat myfilmisaimedat 13 – 17 agedteenagers.Thisisbecause the message of myfilmisto
respectthe seaso youdon’tend upin trouble, anditismore likelytobe youngerteenagersthatare
inthe seaand maybe don’tknowwhattheyare doing.
Withyoungand Rubicams4c’s model,Ithinkthat the audience wouldare mostlikelytobe the
explorerbecause theyfeelthe needtotrynew thingsanddiscoverthings.Myfilmisabouta father
and sonout sailingandthe fatherendsupin trouble leavingthe boytofigure how outhow to save
themwithoutanyknowledge.Therefore thiswouldbe showingthe audience toresearchabout
thingsbefore theydothem.
On the NRS scale,I thinkthat mytarget audience wouldbe ‘E’because theyare the lowestandare
usuallyteenagersatschool andwouldtherefore appealtothem more.
Form and Style:
To filmthis,Iwill needawaterproof/underwatercamerabecause Iwill be filmingthe majorityof the
filmat sea, eitherinaboat or in the watermyself.Iwill tryanduse variouscamerashot types, butI
alsowant to include afewclose upshotsthat will capture the expressionsontheirfaceswhenthey
are introuble tomake the audience connecttothemmore. Iwill be usinga GoPro so that I can put it
on the actors to getpointof viewshotssothe audience cansee whatthey are seeing.
Marketplace:
I thinkthat myfilmmaydo well on‘shortof the week’ because itisrelevanttomanyteenagersand
that theyneedtoknowwhattheydangersare whenoutat sea. I thinkthere couldmaybe be spin
offsof it because there could be differentdailythingsthatpeopleneedtobecome aware of,
howeverthese wouldnotbe sequelsorprequelsbecausetheywouldbe adifferentstoryline.
Draft Script:
The majorityof the conversationwill be overthe shouldershotsgoingbetweenall three
characters showingwhotheyare eachtalkingto.
At the end,I will filmthemdrivingoff downthe roadgoingawayfromthe house.Thisshotwill
be an establishingshotandwill rununtil the car has drivenoutof the close and outof the shot.
For the rest of the film,Iwill be filmingatMudefordbecause thatiswhere myboat iskeptand
therefore Iwill be filmingtheresettingupthe boatscenesandin the seathere too.

Introduction to key characters: The father – The fatherin the filmdoesn’thave averygoodrelationshipwithhisson, because he lefthimandhis motherwhenhe wasyounger. However,he istryingtohave a good relationshipwithhimandmake up the time thathe has missedwhilsthe wasgrowingup. The son – The son inthe filmisa veryarrogant teenagerwhothinkshe cangetaway withanything. He doesn’t wantto try and have a goodrelationshipwithhisfatherbuthe isdoingitfor hismotherthatwants himto try and he justwants herto be happy. Synopsis: Act 1 – At the start of the film,Iwill have the fatherandson gettingready, atthe boyshouse, togo out sailing.Theywill be shownputtingthe equipmentinthe carand drivingoff.Iwill alsobe filming themturningupat the Boat Park andsettingthe boat upand puttingitin the water. Act 2 – In act 2, there will be shotsof the boysittingonthe boat withhisdad doingnothing, whilsthisdadis doingall the workwithpullingthe sail andsteeringthe boat, andtryingtoget the boy involved. The atmosphere will change more negativewhenthe weatherchangesandthe windpicksup. The dad will gethitbythe pole attachedtothe sail (calledthe boom) andwill getknockedunconsciousinto the water.
  • 10. Act 3 – At the start of act three, the sonwill jumpintothe seato try and save hisdad, howeverhe isunable to pull himoutof the waterbecause of how highthe boatis now that theyare in the water. The boy carry’s on holdinghisdaduprightandtriesto wake himup, but isunsuccessful, andare therefore stranded.Time will passandeachcharacter will lookweaker, until the endwhentheyfloattowards some rocks andthe boymanagesto pull eachof themout of the water.Theywill enduphavinga goodrelationshipwitheachotheratthe endbecause of the traumaticexperience theyhave been throughtogether. Target Audience: I thinkthat myfilmisaimedat 13 – 17 agedteenagers.Thisisbecause the message of myfilmisto respectthe seaso youdon’tend upin trouble, anditismore likelytobe youngerteenagersthatare inthe seaand maybe don’tknowwhattheyare doing. Withyoungand Rubicams4c’s model,Ithinkthat the audience wouldare mostlikelytobe the explorerbecause theyfeelthe needtotrynew thingsanddiscoverthings.Myfilmisabouta father and sonout sailingandthe fatherendsupin trouble leavingthe boytofigure how outhow to save themwithoutanyknowledge. Therefore thiswouldbe showingthe audience toresearchabout thingsbefore theydothem. On the NRS scale,I thinkthat mytarget audience wouldbe ‘E’because theyare the lowestandare usuallyteenagersatschool andwouldtherefore appealtothem more. Form and Style: To filmthis,Iwill needawaterproof/underwatercamerabecause Iwill be filmingthe majorityof the filmat sea, eitherinaboat or in the watermyself.Iwill tryanduse variouscamerashot types, butI alsowant to include afewclose upshotsthat will capture the expressionsontheirfaceswhenthey are introuble tomake the audience connecttothemmore. Iwill be usinga GoPro so that I can put it on the actors to getpointof viewshotssothe audience cansee whatthey are seeing. Marketplace: I thinkthat myfilmmaydo well on‘shortof the week’ because itisrelevanttomanyteenagersand that theyneedtoknowwhattheydangersare whenoutat sea. I thinkthere couldmaybe be spin offsof it because there could be differentdailythingsthatpeopleneedtobecome aware of, howeverthese wouldnotbe sequelsorprequelsbecausetheywouldbe adifferentstoryline.
  • 11. Draft Script: The majorityof the conversationwill be overthe shouldershotsgoingbetweenall three characters showingwhotheyare eachtalkingto. At the end,I will filmthemdrivingoff downthe roadgoingawayfromthe house.Thisshotwill be an establishingshotandwill rununtil the car has drivenoutof the close and outof the shot. For the rest of the film,Iwill be filmingatMudefordbecause thatiswhere myboat iskeptand therefore Iwill be filmingtheresettingupthe boatscenesandin the seathere too.
