Motown record company
Who founded it and when?
Motown is an American record company that was founded by Berry Gordy in 1959. However
at the time it was called Tamla Records. They later changed the name to Motown Record
Corporation in 1960. Berry Gordy started the company up from having an $800 loan from
the Gordy family savings fund and released his first song “Come to me” by Marv Johnson
with Tamla Records. The record gets into the top 30 national hits.
What artists do they sign and what genre music do they focus on?
Artists they sign include: Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Bruno Mars, Diana Ross, The
Jackson 5, and many others. Motown mainly focuses on American pop music. Michael
Jackson first turned up at Motown Record Corporations with the Jackson 5, then carried on
as a solo artist.
What is their slogan?
When it was called Tamla Records their slogan was “The sound that makes the world go
round”. However now, with it being called Motown, the slogan is “The sound of young
America”.
