Politics project
1. My name is Ryan ZaneWestbrook and my
major is business administration.
2. What makes
you want to
vote?
•When it comes to voting, it is a vital part of maintaining
our way of life. Even though it seems like one vote will not
make a difference, each vote counts.
•One of the things I would like to see not only on a state
level but really on a federal level is an actual discussion into
the national debt.
•Some of the things I would like to remain the same are of
course our rights, the easy access to vast goods and
services to name a couple.
3. Things I have learned this semester
• I learned that nationwide there are around 90,000 local government units
andTexas has just over 5,00o of them.
• Another aspect I learned more about was thatTexas has very low voter
turnout compared to other states. In 2016 however voter turnout inTexas
rose but it was still very low.
• I was unaware that from 1836 to 1945Texas struggled to survive. I knew
there were difficulties early on and with debt from the civil war but I was
unaware of just how rough it was.
4. •One of the major political issues I believe
future generations should focus more on is
the crisis at the border. In a perfect world
we will have this figured out before that
time comes for future generations to
tackle. However given the history of the
border and how it has been handled up
until today, I do not have high hopes for
this issue to be resolved anytime soon.
While immigration is a good thing there
needs to be some sort of rhyme or reason
to it and not just all out chaos.
5. Texas and their influence on the federal
Government
Texas plays a major role in influencing not only the
federal government but also a key player in the
economy. I think that many people seeTexas as an
example of how to lead and what it means to stand
for what you believe in. I also think that with the
reserves of natural resources the state has,Texas
holds power over the government as the world runs
on oil.
6. •With this semester coming to an end, I have learned a lot
about the state ofTexas not only the history but also the way
the government is structured.TheTexas legislature is
bicameral, it consist of the senate and the house of
representatives. The legislature meets in biennial sessions,
every two years in odd-numbered years, the sessions last 140
days. However the governor can call special sessions that can
last no longer 30 days. One of the things I believe is a positive
is how much the legislatures are paid inTexas. It is one of the
lowest salaries in the nation with the salary being around
7,200 dollars a year with a per diem during session. I feel this
is a good thing for the state as this ensures only those with
good intentions are in these positions.
