Participation in Politics
1. LILIANA TAVERA
PARTICIPATION IN POLITICS PROJECT: ABOUT ME
ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN GENERAL STUDIES AT GRAYSON THEN TRANSFER
TO TWU FOR BACHELORS DEGREE IN SCIENCE FOR DENTAL HYGIENE.
2. GET ACTIVE, PARTICIPATE!
• Get a sticker that says “I voted”
• It’s my right to vote.
• Honor the women that suffered to win the right for me to vote.
• Voice my opinion.
• Fair taxes for all regardless of SES
• Improvements for affordable health care for the elderly
• Better funding for public schools
• Equal pay for female/male employees.
3. LEARNED
• Surprising: Texas Legislature has proposed 670 amendments but
only 491 have been approved by voters. Turnout for amendments is
so low because they appear in November on the ballots on odd-
numbered years.
• I did not know about the water policy in Texas.
• I would like to learn more about Immigration policy.
• Not expecting to learn about the service industry in Texas and the
factors that have increased it’s growth such as it’s proximity to
Mexico, and Central location within the United States.
4. DON’T BE AFRAID, BELIEVE!!
• People should know that their voice matters regardless of their
SES and they should go out and exercise their right to vote.
• People with higher SES are more likely to vote because they
believe that they have a high stake in outcome of elections and
are more aware of election process. It’s important for
everybody to go out and vote for the change they wish to see in
their state. Change can not happen if you have fear of speaking
for the things you believe in. This is specially important for our
younger generation.
5. TEXAS INFLUENCE
• I believe that Texas has a great influence on the Federal
Government because it’s a large state with many of it’s citizens
being immigrants. This could influence the issues that
candidates propose during campaigns. If candidates want to
win they want to make sure they get the vote of big states such
as Texas so they will likely do things to win the vote of the
citizens of Texas.
• Also, while seeking re-election they will make sure to keep
Texas on their side so while in power they will keep the wishes
of Texas voters in mind.
6. LESSONS FOR THE FUTURE: THINK SMALL
• I have learned that it’s important to stay up to date with municipal
elections and make sure to stay involved because they happen in off
years for most cities meaning there’s no state or federal legislative or
even executive elections at that time. Many cities in Texas also hold
their elections in May and not in November so this can easily be
overlooked since these are not covered by the media majority of the
time.
• It’s important to keep up with these elections because it’s the city
government that affects our daily life the most. With things such as
the sidewalks we use, speed limits, and the police and fire
department of our city.
