3. What is inclusion, diversity and equality?
INCLUSION is based on the presupposition that we feel and perform better the
more we can be ourselves. Inclusion is the process of valuing all individuals.
Using diverse talent not in-spite of differences but because of them. Inclusion is
based on the principle that everyone has the right to participate in society and
opportunities to achieve our full potential.
DIVERSITY means we are all different. It is about valuing differences, rather than
being afraid of it. It is acknowledging the benefits that can come from living and
working in a society which is different. It is recognizing everyone has the ability
to valuable contribution.
EQUALITY is recognizing right of all individuals and groups to be treated equally
regardless of their (unique) characteristics. It is about providing fair and equal
opportunities and preventing unfair discrimination.
4. What are our legal obligations?
The Equality Act [2010] makes it unlawful to discriminate on any of the following PROTECTED
CHARACTERSITICS

Race (including national identity and ethnicity)
Marriage and Civil Partnership
Pregnancy and maternity
Religion and beliefs
5. Equality Act gives protection from discrimination on grounds
connected with disability. The following areas are covered
•General Disability
•Progressive Conditions
•Blindness
•Disfigurement
•Hidden Impairments
•Includes substantial, adverse and long term
•Includes people suffering from Cancer, Human
Immunodeficiency Virus and Multiple Sclerosis
•People certified as blind or partially sighted by
consultant ophthalmologist. Registered as
blind or partially sighted by a local authority.
•Includes people with severe disfigurements
such birth mark, skin disease and scars.
•Law covers hidden impairments. Specifically
mental health problems, learning difficulties,
dyslexia, diabetes and epilepsy.

7. Statistical data of populations
•In 2008 only 12% of directorships on Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 were held by women
•In 2009 U.K population was about 51% female and 49% male
•In U.K close to one-fifth or 20% of persons in working age are considered disabled.
•On average disabled people get paid 10% less than non-disabled people sometimes same work
•Immigrants are approximately 12% of U.K population
•Ethnic background is overall 85% (indigenous) 6% (Asian) 3% (Afro – Caribbean) 5% (mixed)
