2. LESSON OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson learners should be able to:
• Identify active and passive voice through discussion
• List the active and passive sentences from the short story” Bank
Robbery at First National Bank” through T-chart
• Share thoughts about the story given by relating it in real life
situation through oral recitation
4. In active voice, the subject performs the action denoted by
the verb.
So in active voice class, the subject does or "acts upon"
the verb in such sentences. For example, Mbali emailed
the letter.
In active voice, the subject performs the action denoted
by the verb.

Passive Voice:
ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE DEFINITION AND
EXAMPLES:
5. Let’s proceed to the passive voice. One can change the normal word
order of many active sentences (those with a direct object) so that
the subject is no longer active, but is, instead, being acted upon by
the verb - or passive.
So in passive, the subject is being "acted upon". And also in passive
voice, the object will be moved to the beginning of the sentence and
the subject will be deleted or we can also put it on the last using “by”.
For example, the letter was emailed by Mbali.
In this example, the direct object from the previous example was
already on the place of the subject which is “the letter” and the
subject here is being acted upon. Let’s take a look at this draft
6. Active voice passive voice
Mbali emailed the letter the letter
Direct object subject
In the active voice, “the letter is still a direct
object, and in passive, it was already a
subject. And also in passive voice, we will
change the verb: add a form of BE in front
of the verb, and use the past participle.

7. MORE EXAMPLES COMPARING BOTH
AV: He was eating
PS: it was eaten by him
The different is in the active voice, the subject “he” was eating maybe a fries. While in
passive, the subject was being acted upon.
Another example:
AV: Thato ate six gums.
pV: six gums were eaten by Thato.
On the active, Thato is doing the action. On the passive, the six gum was acted upon by
Thato.
8. SHORT STORY: BANK ROBBERY AT FIRST NATIONAL
BANK (FNB)
yesterday. The bank was robbed at 12:15pm. One million was stolen. No customers were hurt, but one robber was shot by
police.
Seventeen customers were in the bank at the time of the robbery. They followed the instructions of the robbers, and dropped
to the ground. No customers were hurt in the robbery. One robber was shot by a police officer when he tried to leave the
bank. The robber was hit by one bullet, but he escaped with the other robbers. They drove away in a white truck. Some of
the customers were interviewed on TV about the robbery. They were happy to be alive after this terrible experience.
“When the robber was shot, I screamed.
Many clues were left at the bank. The most important clues are fingerprints of the robbers. The fingerprints were found on the
desk, on the doors, and on the guns. Two guns were left at the bank as the robbers escaped in a car. One robber was shot,
and the blood he left on the floor is another important clue. The fingerprints and the blood are being studied by police
investigators.
The robbers were filmed by the bank’s cameras, but they have not been identified yet. The video is being analyzed by the police. Call the police
if you have any information.

the right side. And after that, please post your works on the board. Am I clear?
