2. Uses of the passive voice
The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or object that experiences
an action rather than the person or object that performs the action. In other
words, the most important thing or person becomes the subject of the sentence.
Rules
When we focus the action of the verb on the subject, we are talking to active
voice, but when we focus ir on the object, we are talking to passive voice.
Examples:
Active voice: The porter carries the bags.
Passive voice: The bags are carried by the porter.
Some verbs such as happen, die, exist, go, occur, arrive, have, live… don’t exist in
the passive voice because they haven’t got an object.

Active to passive transformation
The passive voice is formed with the verb To be (in the same tense that it is used) +
the main verb in past participle.
How to change active to passive voice:
• The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
• The finite form of the verb is changed (To be + past participle).
• The subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or
is dropped).
6. For example:
• Active: The porter carries the bags.
S Present S. object
• Passive: The bags are carried by the porter.
