The 3-story, 43,000 m2 educational facility comprises lecture halls, seminar room,
classrooms & laboratories for use by one of the world’s leading schools of busi-
ness and computer science. As an educator acknowledged to be on the cut-
ting edge, Carnegie Mellon, with the support of the Qatar Foundation, has been
granted a rare opportunity to achieve a facility that is derived as purpose built
rather than more typically one achieved organically and with attendant compro-
mises. CMU-Q will fully integrate the teaching infrastructure & environment with
the most advanced systems for teaching, information technology and audio visual
systems.
At CMU’s specific request, the building has been placed on both sides of one of
the major pedestrian spines and will allow non-CMU-Q staff, faculty, students and
visitors to pass directly through the building as they travel from one part of Educa-
tion City to another. Legoretta + Legoretta’s design solution is an elegant structure
well suited to both the harsh environment of Qatar and the unique challenges that
the faculty, staff and students of CMU-Q will place on it. Natural light is effectively
managed to penetrate deep within the building providing warm, well lit spaces
enhancing the opportunities for interdisciplinary & informal interaction, not just
between the CMU-Q communities but on a campus wide basis as well.

  • 9. RFS 8349 KEO-PM/CM-02/07 The 3-story, 43,000 m2 educational facility comprises lecture halls, seminar room, classrooms & laboratories for use by one of the world’s leading schools of busi- ness and computer science. As an educator acknowledged to be on the cut- ting edge, Carnegie Mellon, with the support of the Qatar Foundation, has been granted a rare opportunity to achieve a facility that is derived as purpose built rather than more typically one achieved organically and with attendant compro- mises. CMU-Q will fully integrate the teaching infrastructure & environment with the most advanced systems for teaching, information technology and audio visual systems. At CMU’s specific request, the building has been placed on both sides of one of the major pedestrian spines and will allow non-CMU-Q staff, faculty, students and visitors to pass directly through the building as they travel from one part of Educa- tion City to another. Legoretta + Legoretta’s design solution is an elegant structure well suited to both the harsh environment of Qatar and the unique challenges that the faculty, staff and students of CMU-Q will place on it. Natural light is effectively managed to penetrate deep within the building providing warm, well lit spaces enhancing the opportunities for interdisciplinary & informal interaction, not just between the CMU-Q communities but on a campus wide basis as well.
