This project was born out of the need to listen the voice of women around the world. As a foreigner, I come across the opportunity to look a bit deeper in another country, another culture, another people, other women. I found that Romanian women from Baia Mare are strong and proud. They believe in equality and can be an example to follow in their determination. Yet, after this little research, I am still not able to fully understand the complexity of womanhood in Romania, Maramures or Baia Mare, but I am lucky enough of get an approximation. Through very different life stories, I found women who carry on with their own life and help to improve the life of those who surround them. Let's discover the female power in more depth! 1. This project was born out of the need to
listen the voice of women around the world.
As a foreigner, I come across the opportunity to look a bit
deeper in another country, another culture, another people, other
women. I found that Romanian women from Baia Mare are
strong and proud. They believe in equality and can be an
example to follow in their determination.
Yet, after this little research, I am still not able to fully
understand the complexity of womanhood in Romania,
Maramures or Baia Mare, but I am lucky enough of get an
approximation. Through very different life stories, I found
women who carry on with their own life and help to improve
the life of those who surround them.
In every conversation, I have heard the same advice, “never
give up”. It came accompanied by reflections belonging to
different ages and generations, but its meaning resonated
loudly and strongly. Don’t stop fighting for your goals, don’t
lose them on the way, don’t lose your time trying to be nice
and fulfilling other’s ideas of what you, as a woman, have to
be, and take care of yourself.
I am very thankful to Sarah, Alexandra, Romina, Minerva and
Doina for giving me the opportunity to get to know them better
and to explain me their stories. I hope this project and their
voices are able to inspire more people as much as they inspired
me.
My name is Fabiola Turiño Manzanero, from Spain. I came in
Baia Mare to volunteer for just a month and ten days. I am still
exploring this new place with the eyes of a tourist, absorbing
every little piece of information, learning and trying to leave a
positive impact.

2. Acest proiect a luat naștere din nevoia de a
asculta vocea femeilor din întreaga lume.
Ca străin, am oportunitatea de a privi un pic mai adânc în altă
țară, altă cultură, alt popor, alte femei. Am constatat că româncele
din Baia Mare sunt puternice și mândre. Ele cred în egalitate și
pot fi un exemplu de urmat în determinarea lor.
Cu toate acestea, după această mică cercetare, încă nu sunt în
stare să înțeleg pe deplin complexitatea femeii în România,
Maramureș sau Baia Mare, dar sunt suficient de norocoasă să am
o estimare. Prin poveștile lor de viață foarte diferite, am găsit
femei care își văd de propria viață și ajută la îmbunătățirea vieții
celor care le înconjoară.
În fiecare conversație am auzit același sfat, „nu renunța
niciodată”. A venit însoțit de reflecții aparținând diferitelor vârste
și generații, dar înțelesul său a rezonat tare și puternic. Nu înceta
să lupți pentru obiectivele tale, nu le pierde pe drum, nu-ți pierde
timpul încercând să fii drăguț și să îndeplinești ideile altora despre
ceea ce tu, ca femeie, trebuie să fii, și să ai grijă de tine.
Sunt foarte recunoscătoare lui Sarah, Alexandrei, Rominei,
Minervei și Doinei pentru că mi-au dat ocazia să le cunosc mai
bine și să-mi explice poveștile lor. Sper că acest proiect și vocile
lor sunt capabile să inspire mai mulți oameni, la fel de mult pe cât
m-au inspirat pe mine.
Numele meu este Fabiola Turiño Manzanero și sunt din
Spania. Am venit în Baia Mare ca voluntară pentru doar o lună
și zece zile. Încă explorez acest loc nou cu ochii unui turist,
absorbind fiecare bucățică de informație, învățând și încercând
să creez un impact pozitiv.

3. Sarah is a girl who lives in Baia Mare whose identity was formed by a very multicultural background. She is a
dynamic and creative student of 8th grade, a scout and a “gamer girl”. She has a wide variety of interests, plenty of
observations about how the world works around her and strong opinions about life.
Being born in Italy, her mother is Hungarian and her father Italian. She ended up living in Baia Mare, a city she
feels very proud of. Growing up in very close contact with her Hungarian identity, she is really active for the
community and all the cultural activities that happens around the city. Sarah’s mother, who she admires and has
always supported her no matter what, became a source of inspiration because of her work and how she is able to
help people.
In her daily life, she spends most of the day at school. There, she has a strong and united group of friends to
have fun with and support each other along the way. Some time ago she was much more interested in maths,
however now it is shifting towards other subjects, especially English. She is aware that for getting good grades you
need to keep up with constant hard work but of course, it is not always easy. She likes to be responsible with
money and also knows quite a lot about history and art, and enjoys reading and writing – Sarah is definitely not
scared of “big” authors like Stephen King.
For College, she would like to go to England and immerse herself in the culture, the ambience, the history and
the language. Her goal is to become an actress. If she is successful, she thinks she will come back on holidays to the
city to give back to the community.
In her experience, living in Baia Mare can have upsides and downsides. When you go out and engage in the
activities you will have fun, but if instead you decide to stay at home with the computer, the city will be boring.
This can also be an opportunity to interact more with some neighbours that you may not know very well - for
example, at the Hungarian Church the children can attend the events and they will have a translator for Romanian
language. Another opportunity can be the Főtér Fesztivál that happens every summer in Baia Mare and in which
Sarah volunteered. There you can play a lot of games, attend concerts, buy crafts…
For Sarah, the city offers a lot of opportunities to girls and she is aware of the equality she can observe in her
surroundings. She is not afraid of talking out loud and make herself heard at classes, events… She is mindful about
the importance of being herself in day-to-day actions and little things, such as wearing makeup for herself and
not for the others. Through the history women were very brave and fight for achieving equality, so new
generations can be who they really want to.

4. Sarah este o fată care locuiește în Baia Mare, și a cărei identitate a fost formată de un mediu foarte multicultural.
Este o elevă dinamică și creativă de clasa a VIII-a, cercetaș și „gameriță”. Are o mare varietate de interese, multe
observații despre cum funcționează lumea în jurul ei și opinii puternice despre viață.
Fiind născută în Italia, mama ei este maghiară, iar tatăl ei italian. A ajuns să locuiască în Baia Mare, oraș de care se
simte foarte mândră. Crescând în contact foarte strâns cu identitatea ei maghiară, este cu adevărat activă în
comunitate și în toate activitățile culturale care se desfășoară în jurul orașului. Mama lui Sarah, pe care o admiră și
care a susținut-o mereu, indiferent de situație, a devenit o sursă de inspirație datorită muncii ei și a modului în care
reușește să ajute oamenii.
În viața de zi cu zi, își petrece cea mai mare parte a zilei la școală. Acolo, are un grup de prieteni puternici și uniți
cu care se distrează și se sprijină reciproc totodată. Cu ceva timp în urmă era mult mai interesată de matematică, dar
cu toate acestea, acum se orientează către alte materii, în special limba engleză. Este conștientă că pentru a obține
note bune trebuie să țină pasul constant cu munca grea, dar desigur, nu este întotdeauna ușor. Îi place să fie
responsabilă cu banii și, de asemenea, știe destul de multe despre istorie și artă, și îi place să citească și să scrie -
Sarah cu siguranță nu este speriată de autori „mari” precum Stephen King.
Ar dori să meargă în Anglia la facultate și să se cufunde în cultură, atmosferă, istorie și limbă. Scopul ei este să
devină actriță. Dacă va avea succes, crede că se va întoarce în vacanțe în oraș pentru a da înapoi comunității.
Din experiența ei, locuirea în Baia Mare poate avea plusuri și minusuri. Când ieși și te implici în activități
te vei distra, dar dacă în schimb te hotărăști să rămâi acasă cu calculatorul, orașul va fi plictisitor. Aceasta poate fi, de
asemenea, o oportunitate de a interacționa mai mult cu unii vecini pe care s-ar putea să nu-i cunoști prea bine – de
exemplu, la Biserica Maghiară copiii pot participa la evenimente și vor avea un traducător pentru limba română. O
altă oportunitate poate fi Főtér Fesztivál care se întâmplă în fiecare vară în Baia Mare, și la care Sarah a fost
voluntară. Acolo te poți juca o mulțime de jocuri, poți participa la concerte, poți cumpăra produse artizanale...
Pentru Sarah, orașul oferă fetelor o mulțime de oportunități și este conștientă de egalitatea pe care o poate observa în
jurul său. Nu îi este frică să vorbească cu voce tare și să se facă auzită la cursuri, evenimente... Este atentă la
importanța de a fi ea însăși în acțiunile de zi cu zi și în lucrurile mărunte, cum ar fi să poarte machiaj pentru ea, și
nu pentru ceilalți. De-a lungul istoriei femeile au fost foarte curajoase și au luptat pentru atingerea egalității, pentru
ca noile generații să poată fi cine își doresc cu adevărat.

5. Alexandra is a young woman who is finding herself and who she wants to be, without being afraid of
expressing herself. She is an independent woman, very much in touch with her emotional side, perhaps that’s
why she can be quite mysterious. She says we all have two sides, the one that we show to the world, more
compliant and based on what its expected from us, and our inner self, our “shadow”. It is important to meet and
understand this hidden side to be happy and true to yourself.
She considers herself a good person who likes darkness and enjoys anime. For her, in order to let people in
into her inner circle, it is very important to connect with the person in an emotional level.
Originally from Baia Mare, which she says you can notice straight away from her accent, Alexandra grew up
with her parents and her sister. After finishing a bilingual profile in high school in the city, she went to study
finances in Cluj Napoca. The truth is, she would have liked to become a doctor, but felt at that moment that she
lacked the support from her environment to be able to fulfil her dreams – in addition to how expensive it can be
to study medicine. Alexandra would also have liked to travel more during her student years, perhaps experience
a new culture and move to a new country. When she finished the University, it was a bit hard to come back
home to live with her family. Having living independently, she misses the freedom that came with it.
However, not everything are regrets. Alexandra is proud of herself because she realized all this in a young age, when she still has time to make changes and
live the present to its fullest. Therefore, she is focusing on herself, working towards her goal to live on her own, finding her own career path on something that
makes her happy, with conditions that will give her a good quality life. She recently leaved the job that made her unhappy with no regrets. Right now, she is
going to the gym, eating clean, and spending time in things that bring her joy, like reading, gaming and going out.
For her, life in Baia Mare has good things: it is nice and clean. Here you can enjoy the quietness of a “smaller” city. It is full of kind hearted people, but
everyone knows each other and this can fuel gossips. Still, she misses more cultural activities and concerts. Depending on the neighbourhood, you can find big
differences.
Another important factor is the lack of fair working opportunities for young people: “in order to get a good job, you’ll need to bribe someone in the system”. In her
opinion, women will mostly have jobs in the secondary or tertiary sector. Even after University studies, you are not guaranteed to get a job in your field or with a
pay check that matches your skills and knowledge. “They pay cheap and expect Harvard intelligence and 10 years’ experience”. However, she believes that women can
have more opportunities than men and can get easier jobs (some of them the only requirements are smile and look nice, which is not necessarily a good thing).
Alexandra would like to go to a bigger city, maybe a capital with more open-minded people or perhaps travel further away and search for a job in
America. She wants to discover her passion through hobbies or who knows, starting to study something new. Another strength or hers is that she on her way to
not be scared of doing what she really wants anymore, not caring about what other people will think anymore. Maybe, in the future, living in Baia Mare
could be an option, but for the moment, she would like to search for her dreams somewhere else.

6. Respectă celelalte femei, nu suntem dușmani, și
respectă-ți și limitele tale

Alexandra este o tânără care este în căutarea de sine și a cine vrea să devină, fără să-i fie teamă de a se exprima.
Este o femeie independentă, în legătură foarte puternică cu latura ei emoțională, poate de asta poate fi destul de
misterioasă. Spune că toți avem două laturi, cea pe care o arătăm lumii, mult mai conformă și bazată pe ceea ce se
așteaptă de la noi, și sinele nostru interior, „umbra” noastră. Este important să ne întâlnim și să ne înțelegem
această latură ascunsă pentru a fi fericit și sincer cu tine însuți.
Se consideră o persoană bună căreia îi place întunericul și se bucură de anime-uri. Pentru ea, ca să lase
oamenii să intre în cercul ei interior, este foarte important să se conecteze cu persoana la nivel emoțional.
Originară din Baia Mare, despre care spune că se remarcă imediat după accentul ei, Alexandra a crescut cu
părinții și cu sora ei. După ce a terminat un profil bilingv într-un liceu din oraș, a plecat să studieze finanțe în
Cluj Napoca. Adevărul este că și-ar fi dorit să devină medic, dar a simțit în acel moment că nu avea sprijin din
mediul ei pentru a-și putea îndeplini visele – în plus față de cât de scump poate fi să studiezi medicina. Alexandrei
i-ar fi plăcut, de asemenea, să călătorească mai mult în anii de studenție, poate să experimenteze o cultură nouă
și să se mute într-o țară nouă. Când a terminat facultatea, a fost cam greu să se întoarcă acasă să locuiască cu
familia ei. După ce a trăit independent, îi este dor de libertatea pe care o avea.
Cu toate acestea, nu totul este despre regrete. Alexandra este mândră de ea însăși pentru că și-a dat seama de toate acestea la o vârstă fragedă, când încă mai are timp
să facă schimbări și să trăiască prezentul din plin. Prin urmare, se concentrează pe ea însăși, lucrează la obiectivul ei de a trăi pe cont propriu, să-și găsească drumul
său în carieră pe ceva ce o face fericită, cu condiții care îi vor oferi o viață de calitate bună. Și-a lăsat de curând fără regrete locul de muncă ce o făcea nefericită. Acum
merge la sală, mănâncă sănătos și își petrece timpul cu lucruri care îi aduc bucurie cum ar fi cititul, jocurile și ieșirile.
Pentru ea, viața în Baia Mare are lucruri bune: e drăguț și curat. Aici te poți bucura de liniștea unui oraș „mai mic”. Este plin de oameni cu suflet bun, dar toată lumea
se cunoaște între ei și asta poate alimenta bârfele. Cu toate acestea, îi e dor de mai multe activități culturale și concerte. În funcție de cartier, poți găsi diferențe mari.
Un alt factor important este lipsa oportunităților de muncă echitabile pentru tineri: „pentru a obține un loc de muncă bun, va trebui să mituiești pe cineva din sistem”. În
opinia ei, femeile vor avea în mare parte locuri de muncă în sectorul secundar sau terțiar. Chiar și cu studii superioare, nu îți este garantat să ai un loc de muncă în
domeniul tău sau cu un salariu care se potrivește cu abilitățile și cunoștințele tale. „Plătesc puțin și se așteaptă la inteligență a la Harvard și experiență de 10 ani”. Cu toate
acestea, crede că femeile pot avea mai multe oportunități decât bărbații și pot obține locuri de muncă mai ușor (pentru unele singurele cerințe sunt să zâmbească și să
arate frumos, ceea ce nu este neapărat un lucru bun).
Alexandra și-ar dori să meargă într-un oraș mai mare, poate într-o capitală cu oameni mai deschiși la minte sau poate să călătorească mai departe și să-și caute
un loc de muncă în America. Vrea să-și descopere pasiunea prin hobby-uri sau cine știe, să înceapă să studieze ceva nou. Un alt punct forte al ei e că este pe drumul
spre a nu-i mai fi frică să facă ceea ce își dorește cu adevărat, să nu-i mai pese de ceea ce vor mai gândi alții. Poate, pe viitor, locuitul în Baia Mare ar putea fi o opțiune,
dar pentru moment, ar vrea să-și caute visele în altă parte.

7. Having lived all her life in Baia Mare, she can’t picture herself living anywhere else. She loves being surrounded by the mountains and all the
opportunities that the city offers. She was able to study here the profession she loves the most and it wasn’t difficult to find a job after. The city is alive and
safe, and even if some people still have old minded ideas about what a women should be, she is proud to see how the women aren’t always fitting in the
traditional roles anymore, which is visible in small daily examples, like the increase of female bolt drivers. This city is definitely a strong part of Romina’s
identity, although, there is always some room for improvement – if we talk about politics, women in general are not being listened enough. She would also
love to have more cultural events, music, theatres…
In her opinion, everything depends on one’s attitude. She is a strong advocate of women doing what they want with their education, their job and their
life, instead of what their parents or society dictates for them. She also considers it is important to know the difference between wanting a partner and
needing a partner. She can totally take care of her and her son, and always managed if always broke at home, to pay taxes… She has always been strong and
independent, doing what she felt it was right without pretending to be anyone else. Being a woman in Baia Mare is not easy but also not difficult,
it's up to you, if you see things as opportunities or challenges.
Romina, 37 Romina is a cheerful and volcanic woman, born and raised in Baia Mare, who has been a nurse for 15
years now. She loves to be helpful for others and never stop. She is a great example of an strong women
who creates her own life and isn’t scared of hard work, without forgetting to have fun on the way.
Being always very close to her parents and brothers, since she was young, they would go on trips during
the weekends, walk in the natural areas nearby of the city, which contributed to her love for the region. She
had a happy childhood and felt loved and supported by her family.
Her daily life is quite busy. After she leaves her son at school, she works as a nurse in a local high school.
There, she doesn’t only take care of injured teenagers, but also support the girls and offers information in
topics that can be a taboo - like our period - and don’t have easy situations at home to talk about it and ask
for advice. She can see how the girls who are growing up are different now than then. Now they are more
informed and smarter about some topics, but on the other side they want to grow too fast by “getting in
traps” not appropriate for their age.
When she finishes with her job, she goes to pick up her son from school and take him to afternoon
activities, time that she uses for the work at home, cooking, doing laundries… After that, she can have dinner
and relax with her son. On the weekends and when she has a little bit more of free time, she doesn’t forget
about self-care, relax, improving her education or doing her hobbies and things that she loves, and is aware
that is not an egoistic thing to do.

8. Romina, 37 Romina este o femeie veselă și vulcanică, născută și crescută în Baia Mare, și care este asistentă medicală de
15 ani. Îi place să fie de ajutor altora și nu se oprește niciodată. Este un exemplu minunat de o femeie
puternică, ce își creează propria viață și nu se sperie de munca grea, fără a uita să se și distreze.
Fiind mereu foarte apropiată de părinții și frații ei, de când era mică, merg în excursii în timpul weekendului,
se plimbă prin zonele naturale din apropierea orașului, ceea ce a contribuit la dragostea ei pentru regiune. A
avut o copilărie fericită, este iubită și susținută de familia ei.
Viața ei de zi cu zi este destul de aglomerată. După ce își lasă fiul la școală, lucrează ca asistentă într-un liceu
local. Acolo, nu are grijă doar de adolescenții răniți, ci și sprijină fetele și le oferă informații în subiecte
care pot fi un tabu - cum ar fi menstruația - și care nu au situații propice acasă pentru a vorbi despre asta și a
cere un sfat. Prin slujba ei poate vedea cum fetele care cresc sunt diferite acum decât înainte. Acum sunt mai
informate și mai deștepte cu privire la unele subiecte, dar pe de altă parte vor să crească prea repede „intrând
în capcane” nepotrivite vârstei lor.
Când termină la serviciu, se duce să-și ia fiul de la școală și duce la activități de după-amiază, timp pe care îl
folosește pentru treburi casnice, pentru gătit, pentru spălatul hainelor... După aceea, poate lua cina și să se
relaxeze cu fiul ei. În weekenduri și când are puțin mai mult timp liber, nu uită despre îngrijirea de sine, să
se relaxeze, să-și îmbunătățească educația sau făcând hobby-urile și lucrurile pe care le iubește, și este
conștientă că nu este un lucru egoist să faci asta.
Dacă tu nu-ți vrei propriul bine,
nimeni nu o va face
După ce a trăit toată viața în Baia Mare, nu se poate imagina trăind în altă parte. Îi place să fie înconjurată de munți și de toate oportunitățile pe care le
oferă orașul. A putut de asemenea să studieze aici profesia pe care o iubește cel mai mult și nu i-a fost greu să-și găsească un loc de muncă după. Orașul este
viu și sigur, și chiar dacă unii oameni încă mai au idei vechi despre ceea ce ar trebui să fie o femeie, este mândră să vadă cum femeile nu mai se
încadrează întotdeauna în roluri tradiționale, ceea ce este vizibil în mici exemple zilnice, cum ar fi creșterea numărului de șoferițe de Bolt. Acest oraș
este cu siguranță o parte puternică a identității Rominei, deși, există întotdeauna un loc de îmbunătățire – dacă vorbim despre politică, femeile în general nu
sunt ascultate suficient. I-ar plăcea să avem mai multe evenimente culturale, muzică, teatru...
În opinia ei, totul depinde de atitudinea cuiva. Este o susținătoare puternică a femeilor care fac ceea ce își doresc cu educația, cu munca și cu viața lor, în loc
de ceea ce le dictează părinții sau societatea. De asemenea, consideră că este important să cunoaștem diferența dintre a-ți dori un partener și de a avea
nevoie de un partener. Poate avea cu totul grijă de ea și de fiul ei, și a reușit întotdeauna să rezolve dacă s-a stricat ceva în casă, să plătească taxe... A fost
întotdeauna puternică și independentă, făcând ceea ce credea că este corect, fără a pretinde că este altcineva. Să fii femeie în Baia Mare nu este ușor,
dar nici greu, depinde de tine dacă vezi lucrurile ca oportunități sau ca provocări.

9. Minerva feels strongly linked with Baia Mare and its incredible nature. Being surrounded by the mountains is a privilege. For her, living here can be easier or
difficult – depending on where you are located in the city, especially for those neighbourhoods that are far away from the centre and have less access to services. Strong
advocate for the environment and a greener city, she believes that all the citizens should have the right to express themselves and live in a sustainable place.
Also, being a woman here is easier than in other parts of rural Romania, where the society is more patriarchal even in subtle ways. In her opinion, women voices are
not always listened to. Minerva feels lucky working in a place where her opinions were well heard and she can do what she likes. Still, there were a few times in the past
when her voice wasn’t existing for some – it wasn’t an opposition, it was just unheard.
In her eyes, women have so much to offer although the efforts and the work we do on a daily basis are not necessarily well recognized. She believes generally we have to
work harder than men to fulfil our goals. “Perhaps the society doesn’t offer the same opportunities for men and women, but you learn how to live with the differences
and to make the most out of your situation”. A piece of advice that she offers is stick to what it is important for us, instead of being nice all the time
and do everything for others' comfort. We are not supposed to lose our goals and dreams on the way.

Minerva is a very creative woman who works at the Butchers' Bastion, creating an ocean of peace and biodiversity in the
middle of the city. She describes herself as a museum “dinosaur”, yet she is still full of innovative ideas to make the world a
better place. She knows that everything is relative and we should try to look at our problems from a bigger perspective.
Her cosmopolitan family moved around Romania until they decide to settle in Baia Mare when she was a child. Her parents had a
very deep relationship with Maramures - they filmed several documentaries about the real and traditional country life, some of
which were awarded. This allowed Minerva to travel and understand the spirit of the community that was lived in the villages,
which still accompanies her till today.
The bond with her family was very special as they fuelled her inner curiosity to discover new things. She learnt about
gardening from her mother. Her father taught her and her siblings to ask questions, encouraging them to think and try to
understand everything. “Before Wikipedia, it was my father” – she said. When she grew up, she wanted to study philology, but
ended up choosing a more unconventional path. Her curiosity led her to self-learn about numerous topics, eventually became a
curator and start working in different city museums in 1981.
Nowadays, she gives life to one of her dearest projects: the “Living Garden”. It is designed to be an invitation for insects to take
a rest in the middle of the concrete jungle, it can be a transitional space for them. A little wilder than what we may be accustomed
to, it’s perfect to teach children and adults about natural life. From its beginning, the project attracted a lot of international people
due to its particularities. Minerva takes care of it with love and never stops investigating about its inhabitants. At the same
time, she and the rest of the team do sustainable crafts, host artistic events and help the regional artisans to sell their products.

10. Minerva se simte strâns legată de Baia Mare și de natura sa incredibilă. Să fii înconjurat de munți este un privilegiu. Pentru ea, a trăi aici poate fi mai ușor sau mai
dificil – în funcție de locul în care te afli în oraș, mai ales pentru acele cartiere care sunt departe de centru și au mai puțin acces la servicii. Avocată înrăită pentru mediu și
un oraș mai verde, ea consideră că toți cetățenii ar trebui să aibă dreptul de a se exprima și de a trăi într-un loc sustenabil.

alte părți ale României rurale, unde societatea este mai patriarhală, chiar și în moduri subtile. În opinia ei, vocile
femeilor nu sunt întotdeauna ascultate. Minerva se simte norocoasă că lucrează într-un loc în care părerile ei au fost bine auzite și poate face ceea ce îi place. Totuși, au
fost câteva dăți în trecut când vocea ei nu exista pentru unii – nu era o opoziție, era pur și simplu neascultată.
În ochii ei, femeile au atât de multe de oferit, deși eforturile și munca pe care o facem zilnic nu sunt neapărat bine recunoscute. Ea crede că, în general, trebuie muncim
mai mult decât bărbații pentru a ne îndeplini obiectivele. „Poate că societatea nu oferă aceleași oportunități bărbaților și femeilor, dar înveți cum să trăiești cu diferențele și
să profiți la maximum de situația ta”. Un sfat pe care îl oferă este să rămânem la ceea ce este important pentru noi, în loc să fim drăguți tot timpul și să facem totul pentru
confortul altora. Nu trebuie să ne pierdem obiectivele și visele pe drum.
Minerva este o femeie foarte creativă ce lucrează la Bastionul Măcelarilor, creând un ocean de pace și biodiversitate în mijlocul
orașului. Se descrie ca un „dinozaur” de muzeu, dar încă este plină de idei inovatoare pentru a face lumea un loc mai bun.
Știe că totul este relativ și că ar trebui să încercăm să ne privim problemele dintr-o perspectivă mai largă.
Familia ei cosmopolită s-a tot mutat prin România până când a decis să se stabilească în Baia Mare, pe când ea era mică. Părinții ei
aveau o relație foarte profundă cu Maramureșul - au filmat mai multe documentare despre viața adevărată și tradițională la țară,
unele dintre ele fiind și premiate. Acest lucru i-a permis Minervei să călătorească și să înțeleagă spiritul de comunitate care era
simțit în sate, care încă o însoţeşte şi astăzi.
Legătura cu familia ei a fost foarte specială, deoarece i-au alimentat curiozitatea interioară de a descoperi lucruri noi. A învățat
despre grădinărit de la mama ei. Tatăl ei a învățat-o pe ea și pe frații ei să pună întrebări, încurajându-i să gândească și să încerce să
înțeleagă totul. „Înainte de Wikipedia, a fost tatăl meu” – a spus ea. Când a crescut, a vrut să studieze filologia, dar a ajuns să aleagă o
cale mai neconvențională. Curiozitatea a determinat-o să învețe singură despre numeroase subiecte, și până la urmă a devenit
curator și a început să lucreze în diferite muzee urbane în 1981.
În zilele noastre, dă viață unuia dintre cele mai dragi proiecte ale sale: „Grădina Vie”. Este conceput să fie o invitație pentru insecte
să se odihnească în mijlocul junglei de beton. Puțin mai sălbatic decât cu ceea ce ne-am obișnuit, este perfect pentru a-i învăța pe
copii și adulți despre viața naturală. De la început, proiectul a atras o mulțime de persoane internaționale datorită particularităților
sale. Minerva îngrijește grădina cu dragoste și nu încetează să investigheze despre locuitorii săi. În același timp, ea și restul
echipei fac obiecte de artizanat durabile, găzduiesc evenimente artistice și ajută artizanii regionali să-și vândă produsele.

11. Doina Rodica is an ambitious woman and a languages expert who travelled around the world and has been
working as an English teacher from a long time ago.
Born in Baia Mare and only child, she focused in her studies to succeed in life. Her mother was her greatest
support, insisting on the importance of learning and instilling in her the value of hard work and her drive. “That was
the right time, because you can’t do it younger”, she used to say and Doina still repeats it to her students.
As she was a very talkative and social girl, her parents searched for her a school where she could develop her
abilities. There, she discovered her passion for learning languages that later led her through her professional
career. For studying, she lived in different parts of the country, as her mother always searched for the better
opportunities for her daughter. Still, it was difficult to manage it being away from home and returned closer,
having the opportunity to study in Cluj Napoca.
She kept learning languages and became a certified teacher of French and English, although her dream was to be a
translator. She worked in different fields, like an accountant – even if it didn’t say so in her contract – where she
was able to use her linguistic skills. Driven by her ambition, she was able to work as a translator and travel to
different countries, like France, Spain, The Netherlands, and many more. She remembers when she went for an
international dance event in Switzerland and all the beautiful things she saw. Even if she was offered the opportunity
to stay there working, she decided to come back to tell everything to her mother, and she is happy with her choice.
Finding a job as a teacher in Baia Mare wasn’t easy, but at the end she succeeded and was able to return to her childhood school and fulfil her mother's dream. There, she
is able to see how different generations of students come and go – for example, the current director used to be her former student, and there are people who still remember
her parents. In her work, she can see how nowdays girls are more emancipated than before. She makes sure to make her classes participative for all students, no matter
what.
For Doina, Baia Mare is a good place to live. It is safer from bigger cities without compromising in services and entertainment alternatives. She considers that the region
offers many opportunities for women to work, specially nowadays that transport is easier. When she worked as a teacher in the countryside years ago, she was able to see
that life for some women wasn’t so easy – they had to stay at home and remain silent when they suffered. Now the situation is better, but there is a lot of work to do in a
country house (taking care of the animals, cleaning…), so not all women can choose to work away.
The connection with the people strengths her bond with the city, where she lives with her husband and son. She meets friends in the streets, in the neighbourhood, in
the school. The nice surroundings are an asset. Yet, sometimes she regrets with her husband for not having taken the decision to emigrate taking advantage of her talent
in languages. But they made choices given the circumstances and now its “too late to worry, too blue to cry”. She sees herself living here for the rest of her life, perhaps
alternating with her house in the countryside.
In her opinion, as women we have to be strong and never give up on our dreams, never think of ourself as weaker than a man, and of course, not to forget about
our mothers.

12. Doina este o femeie ambițioasă și expertă în limbi străine, care a călătorit în jurul lumii și lucrează ca profesoară de
engleză de mult timp.
Născută în Baia Mare și singurul copil, s-a concentrat pe studiile sale pentru a reuși în viață. Mama ei a fost cel mai
mare sprijin, insistând asupra importanței învățării și insuflându-i valoarea muncii asidue și a ceea ce o animă. „Acela
a fost momentul potrivit, pentru că n-o puteai face mai tânăr fiind”, spunea ea și Doina încă le repetă asta elevilor ei.
Fiind o fată foarte vorbăreață și socială, părinții ei îi caută o școală unde să-și dezvolte abilitățile. Acolo și-a descoperit
pasiunea pentru învățarea limbilor străine, care mai târziu a condus-o prin cariera ei profesională. Pentru studiile
sale, a trăit în diferite părți ale țării, deoarece mama ei a căutat mereu oportunități mai bune pentru fiica sa. Totuși, a
fost greu de gestionat fiind departe de casă și a revenit mai aproape, având ocazia să studieze la Cluj Napoca.
A continuat să învețe limbi străine și a devenit profesoară de franceză și engleză, deși visul ei era să fie traducătoare.
A lucrat în diferite domenii, ca și contabil – chiar dacă nu scria asta în contractul ei – unde a a putut să-și folosească
abilitățile lingvistice. Condusă de ambiția ei, a reușit să lucreze ca traducătoare și să călătorească în diferite țări ca
Franța, Spania, Țările de Jos și multe altele. Își amintește când a mers pentru un eveniment internațional de dans în
Elveția și toate lucrurile frumoase pe care le-a văzut. Chiar dacă i s-a oferit ocazia de a rămâne acolo să muncească, s-
a hotărât să se întoarcă și să-i spună totul mamei sale, și este fericită cu alegerea sa.
Găsirea unui loc de muncă în Baia Mare ca profesoară nu a fost ușoară, dar în final a reușit și a putut să se întoarcă la școala copilăriei sale și să împlinească visul
mamei. Acolo poate să vadă cum vin și pleacă diferite generații de elevi – de exemplu, actualul director era o fostă elevă, și există oameni care încă își mai amintesc de
părinții ei. În munca ei poate vedea cum fetele de astăzi sunt mai emancipate decât înainte. Are grijă să-și facă orele participative pentru toți elevii, indiferent de
situație.
Pentru Doina, Baia Mare este un loc bun de locuit. Este mai sigur decât orașele mai mari, fără a face compromisuri în ceea ce privește serviciile și alternativele de
divertisment. Consideră că regiunea oferă femeilor multe oportunități de a lucra, mai ales în zilele noastre când transportul este mai ușor. Când a lucrat ca profesoară în
mediul rural cu ani în urmă, a putut să vadă că viața pentru unele femei nu era atât de ușoară – trebuiau să stea acasă și să tacă atunci când sufereau. Acum situația este
mai bună, dar este mult de lucru într-o casă de la țară (îngrijirea animalelor, curățenia ...), așa că nu toate femeile pot alege să lucreze mai departe de casă.
Conexiunile cu oamenii îi întăresc legătura cu orașul, unde locuiește cu soțul și fiul ei. Își întâlnește prietenii pe stradă, în cartier, la școală. Împrejurimile frumoase
sunt un atu. Cu toate acestea, uneori regretă alături de soțul ei că nu au luat decizia de a emigra profitând de talentul ei pentru limbi. Dar au făcut alegeri având în
vedere circumstanțele și acum este „prea târziu să ne îngrijorăm, prea trist să mai plângem”. Se vede trăind aici pentru tot restul vieții, poate alternând cu casa ei de la țară.
În opinia ei, ca femei, trebuie să fim puternice și să nu renunțăm niciodată la visele noastre, să nu ne vedem niciodată mai slabe decât bărbații și, desigur, să nu uităm
de mamele noastre.
