1. Essay About English Language
In Malaysia, English language is stereotypically considered as a person's second or third language. Majority of Malaysians' native language is Malay
for Malays, Tamil for Indians, Mandarin for Chinese or colloquial dialects for those from rural areas. In this paper, I would reflect on my English
language learning experiences.
It has been more than eighteen years since I first learned the English language. There are many factors which contributed to my proficiency in the
English language. One of them is early exposure to the language. Growing up, I was exposed greatly to English as a second language. My journey in
acquiring English as a second language began from learning at home to receiving education in each level of school to today where...show more content...
The books that were used were from Peter and Jane book series. There was a reading teacher hired to sit at the back of the class and students were
called one by one to read to the teacher personally. The process was difficult in the beginning as some of English words do not sound the same way as
they are spelled. In example, back then I did not know that some of the inflection âed used in past tense words were inaudible, such as the word
'worked'. The reading process was divided into 4 levels and students with faster pace, managed to complete their readings in a short amount of time.
After the students were done reading specific parts of the books, we were required to write the sentences we had difficulties in pronouncing to
practice our writing skills. At such a young age, quite a number of the students faced troubles in writing words, some would write the alphabets in their
inverted forms. I believe that this process was a big help to the students including myself as speaking is generally easier than reading and writing. In
addition to that, if the students managed to behave themselves in the best possible manner, the teacher would reward us by letting us watch English

2. Presently, English is the most wide spread language in terms of the number of countries that speak the language as a mother tongue or foreign
language. Regardless of languages such as Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish having a great number of speakers, English dominates as a foreign
language for many. A Newsweek Magazine article, written by John McWhorter, ranks English as the world's international language today and states
it is likely to remain this way in the future (McWhorter). Writer Dorie Clark for Forbes Magazine also supports this claim from an economic
perspective, whereas English is seen as the global language of business as well (Clark). The importance of English is measurable by its increasing

Another form of media that the English language dictates is music, specifically the pop genre. Pop music reaches various parts of the world, which
is another method of it spreading globally (Mydans). Since the majority of popular music is in English, this is what people hear then it reaches them
wherever they may be. This form of music links with popular culture, meaning that when people hear it they feel like it is necessary to learn in order
to be "cool". These forms of media are rapidly growing, and the English language dominating them is making the language spread rapidly as well,
increasing its global importance. English's significance is also observed through looking at its increasing expansion in parts of the world that do not
typically speak the language. Currently, it is the lingua franca ("A medium of communication between peoples of different languages" is the
definition provided by the Free Dictionary for the term lingua franca) of Europe (Lingua Franca). Two out of every three Europeans has at least a
basic understanding of the language (Doughty). Not only is this, but an EU report claims that English is likely to become even more dominant in the
future. Although the popularity of a subject is not equivalent to its relevance, in this case English's importance increases because it is becoming
somewhat of a necessity in society to achieve success. China is another area that is growing in its number of English speakers, as more people

3. The Influence Of The English Language
Throughout time, English has risen rapidly to become a welcomed global lingua franca. Its ability to adapt to different groups of people and cultures
all over the world is one of the factors contributing to its rapid spread and utilisation. So rapid is its spread, that nonânative English speakers currently
outnumber native English speakers by more than two to one. English is spreading at an unimaginable rate across the world. People spanning the globe
are learning English in hopes to acquire a little of the perceived esteem which is augmented by the language. That is, the belief that English is their
passport to a new life. A life where further education, finding employment, business expansion and an understanding of popular culture are all
opportunities which come hand in hand with this seemingly prestigious language. It is these beliefs which show the hegemonic influence English has
over other languages and cultures around the world. Between the 16th to 18th centuries, British colonialism brought English across the world. Whilst
leading the Industrial Revolution, the English speaking Britons were also spearheading something much larger: the globalisation of English language.
Expanding international trade meant that English was being transported all over the world, and absorbing new words from the many different
languages it came across. During this time, the English lexicon swelled immensely, taking on foreign words and giving its vocabulary breadth like no

The English Language
A language that is spoken internationally is called "Global" or "World" language. A global language is a language in which people speak
internationally on a daily basis, in international organizations and diplomatic relations. It is a "lingua franca", a language that helps people from
different backgrounds to communicate with each other. Not many languages that have been established in human history have reached to the point in
which they are called a global language, amongst those few languages is English. Approximately 2 billion people around the world use English as a
native language, a second language or a foreign language. English is used for many causes, such as; technical and scientific communication, education
and employment.
The reason why English is a global language is because people tend to learn easier languages. English is a language that doesn't use complex grammar
and can be consumed relatively easy. Moreover, there are no grammatical differences between different genders and it consists of less auxiliary verbs
than any other language. Another factor that has led English to its popularity is the political and...show more content...

English Language Teaching Methods
Many countries in Asia like China, Japan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Singapore etc., adopted English as a foreign language not as a second language. Because
considering English as a second language and as a Foreign Language is different in their view point. They view that outside of the classroom, English
is not that much useful. They teach all the subjects in their mother tongue but in India if one is unable to speak in English he becomes a tabooed
person. Many Asian countries treat the pupil's age, sex, race, attitude, intelligence and grasping power in teaching English. Indian teachers neglect this
aspect. For ex: a speaker from Hyderabad emphasizes more vowels before many words because of the influence of Urdu. Straight â Istraight. And a
Bihari pronounces 'sh' as 's' because of the influence of Kharboli. Teachers don't take into consideration of this aspect and mistreat students. So teachers
have to choose the methodology as suit their classroom and environment. If teacher takes all the factors into consideration classroom becomes more
meaningful. All the methods are not meaningful when teacher choose them as per the needs of the classroom.

English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in

throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that
English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an Englishâspeaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I

listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native
language. Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment showed that learning English from a
nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first

Many challenges are faced by the ELL students and their families by being in a new environment, such as a new language, school, food, beliefs, life

support, and assistant with the full understanding of the new changes in their new environments. On the other hand, social cultural pressure could be
increased if students do not have another native individual to relate to; students need to have a teacher who will assist and guide them in learning new

The ProtoâIndoâEuropean language was more complex than English today. It is possible to reconstruct three genders (masculine, feminine, and
neuter) and up to eight cases (nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative, ablative, locative, instrumental). Adjectives agreed in case, number,
and gender with the noun. The verb system was also rich in inflections, used for aspect, mood, tense, voice, person, and number. Different
grammatical forms of a word were often related by the feature of ablaut, or vowel graduation: the root vowel would change systematically to express
such differences as singular and plural or past and present tense, as is still the case in English foot/feet or take/took (Crystal, 1997). The
ProtoâIndoâEuropean language is thought to have been spoken before 3,000 BC, and to have split up into different languages during the following
millennium (Crystal, 1997). The languages families include Celtic, Germanic, Italic, IndoâIranian, Tocharian, Armenian, Anatolian, Albanian, Greek,
BaltoâSlavic, and Slavic languages. Yiddish, German, Afrikaans, Dutch, Flemish, Frisian, and English make up the West Germanic subgroup of the
Germanic Branch (Crystal, 1997). Scholars renamed the language group the IndoâEuropean family after 3,000 BC (Crystal, 1997). Theorists suggest
