Essay About English Language
In Malaysia, English language is stereotypically considered as a person's second or third language. Majority of Malaysians' native language is Malay
for Malays, Tamil for Indians, Mandarin for Chinese or colloquial dialects for those from rural areas. In this paper, I would reflect on my English
language learning experiences.
It has been more than eighteen years since I first learned the English language. There are many factors which contributed to my proficiency in the
English language. One of them is early exposure to the language. Growing up, I was exposed greatly to English as a second language. My journey in
acquiring English as a second language began from learning at home to receiving education in each level of school to today where...show more content...
The books that were used were from Peter and Jane book series. There was a reading teacher hired to sit at the back of the class and students were
called one by one to read to the teacher personally. The process was difficult in the beginning as some of English words do not sound the same way as
they are spelled. In example, back then I did not know that some of the inflection –ed used in past tense words were inaudible, such as the word
'worked'. The reading process was divided into 4 levels and students with faster pace, managed to complete their readings in a short amount of time.
After the students were done reading specific parts of the books, we were required to write the sentences we had difficulties in pronouncing to
practice our writing skills. At such a young age, quite a number of the students faced troubles in writing words, some would write the alphabets in their
inverted forms. I believe that this process was a big help to the students including myself as speaking is generally easier than reading and writing. In
addition to that, if the students managed to behave themselves in the best possible manner, the teacher would reward us by letting us watch English
cartoons such as Barney and Friends or Bananas in

Presently, English is the most wide spread language in terms of the number of countries that speak the language as a mother tongue or foreign
language. Regardless of languages such as Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish having a great number of speakers, English dominates as a foreign
language for many. A Newsweek Magazine article, written by John McWhorter, ranks English as the world's international language today and states
it is likely to remain this way in the future (McWhorter). Writer Dorie Clark for Forbes Magazine also supports this claim from an economic
perspective, whereas English is seen as the global language of business as well (Clark). The importance of English is measurable by its increasing
expansion in several nations around...show more content...
Another form of media that the English language dictates is music, specifically the pop genre. Pop music reaches various parts of the world, which
is another method of it spreading globally (Mydans). Since the majority of popular music is in English, this is what people hear then it reaches them
wherever they may be. This form of music links with popular culture, meaning that when people hear it they feel like it is necessary to learn in order
to be "cool". These forms of media are rapidly growing, and the English language dominating them is making the language spread rapidly as well,
increasing its global importance. English's significance is also observed through looking at its increasing expansion in parts of the world that do not
typically speak the language. Currently, it is the lingua franca ("A medium of communication between peoples of different languages" is the
definition provided by the Free Dictionary for the term lingua franca) of Europe (Lingua Franca). Two out of every three Europeans has at least a
basic understanding of the language (Doughty). Not only is this, but an EU report claims that English is likely to become even more dominant in the
future. Although the popularity of a subject is not equivalent to its relevance, in this case English's importance increases because it is becoming
somewhat of a necessity in society to achieve success. China is another area that is growing in its number of English speakers, as more people

The Influence Of The English Language
Throughout time, English has risen rapidly to become a welcomed global lingua franca. Its ability to adapt to different groups of people and cultures
all over the world is one of the factors contributing to its rapid spread and utilisation. So rapid is its spread, that non–native English speakers currently
outnumber native English speakers by more than two to one. English is spreading at an unimaginable rate across the world. People spanning the globe
are learning English in hopes to acquire a little of the perceived esteem which is augmented by the language. That is, the belief that English is their
passport to a new life. A life where further education, finding employment, business expansion and an understanding of popular culture are all
opportunities which come hand in hand with this seemingly prestigious language. It is these beliefs which show the hegemonic influence English has
over other languages and cultures around the world. Between the 16th to 18th centuries, British colonialism brought English across the world. Whilst
leading the Industrial Revolution, the English speaking Britons were also spearheading something much larger: the globalisation of English language.
Expanding international trade meant that English was being transported all over the world, and absorbing new words from the many different
languages it came across. During this time, the English lexicon swelled immensely, taking on foreign words and giving its vocabulary breadth like no

English Essay: English As A Global Language
The English Language
A language that is spoken internationally is called "Global" or "World" language. A global language is a language in which people speak
internationally on a daily basis, in international organizations and diplomatic relations. It is a "lingua franca", a language that helps people from
different backgrounds to communicate with each other. Not many languages that have been established in human history have reached to the point in
which they are called a global language, amongst those few languages is English. Approximately 2 billion people around the world use English as a
native language, a second language or a foreign language. English is used for many causes, such as; technical and scientific communication, education
and employment.
The reason why English is a global language is because people tend to learn easier languages. English is a language that doesn't use complex grammar
and can be consumed relatively easy. Moreover, there are no grammatical differences between different genders and it consists of less auxiliary verbs
than any other language. Another factor that has led English to its popularity is the political and...show more content...
Native English speakers are the ones who were born in countries in which English is the official language, therefore; their mother language, and
such countries are The USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, these are called the inner circle. English as a second language is used by
people whose countries (Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ghana, India, Kenya, etc.) have been invaded by nations that use English as an official language and

language in schools and institutes for educational and touristic purposes, therefore being used as a useful tool. This last type of English is called

English Language Teaching Methods
Many countries in Asia like China, Japan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Singapore etc., adopted English as a foreign language not as a second language. Because
considering English as a second language and as a Foreign Language is different in their view point. They view that outside of the classroom, English
is not that much useful. They teach all the subjects in their mother tongue but in India if one is unable to speak in English he becomes a tabooed
person. Many Asian countries treat the pupil's age, sex, race, attitude, intelligence and grasping power in teaching English. Indian teachers neglect this
aspect. For ex: a speaker from Hyderabad emphasizes more vowels before many words because of the influence of Urdu. Straight – Istraight. And a
Bihari pronounces 'sh' as 's' because of the influence of Kharboli. Teachers don't take into consideration of this aspect and mistreat students. So teachers
have to choose the methodology as suit their classroom and environment. If teacher takes all the factors into consideration classroom becomes more
meaningful. All the methods are not meaningful when teacher choose them as per the needs of the classroom.

factor of teaching–learning process. Unless students learn to utilise the classroom method to express thoughts and feelings outside into the real world

Learning English as a Second Language Essay
English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in
should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses
throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that
English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I
came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First, English is dealt with all the time while staying in an

Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my Turkish English teachers are not the experts in
pronunciation and there is no class focusing on speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking and
listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and
American English, heard brief lectures presented in English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the
lectures. The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on listening comprehension tests when they
listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native
language. Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment showed that learning English from a
nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first
couple of months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of "very" or "so", and I used to say

By allowing the ELL students to use their native and their second language in reading, and writing it will make them move along this new process.
Reading and writing experience should be context related and meaningful in order for them to be effective in their learning, even though, they can
transfer the literacy skills that they have obtained in their native language towards their second language while they are exposed to more learning
experiences.
Many challenges are faced by the ELL students and their families by being in a new environment, such as a new language, school, food, beliefs, life
style, etc., where they feel that they need to deviate from their home language and their culture, absolutely not, they need to be conceited, revered,
treasured. In this matter, our role as educators is to be prepared to work effectively with families (Katz & Bauch, n.d., p. 189), in providing the effective
support, and assistant with the full understanding of the new changes in their new environments. On the other hand, social cultural pressure could be
increased if students do not have another native individual to relate to; students need to have a teacher who will assist and guide them in learning new
a language; without allowing them to lose their cultural identity.

enjoy hands–on activities in the classroom. I remember looking forward to different holidays because we would be able to participate in an arts and
crafts activities while being able to learn about the holiday we were celebrating. Until I started learning more about English Language Learners, I
never realized how these activities can be more difficult for some students. Because certain lessons inside of the classroom can be more difficult for
ELLs, I think it is extremely important to be able to help them learn the material to the best of their ability. I remember some of my classmates that
weren't fluent in English being taken out of the classroom for a few hours to learn separately. Because my school was small, I was able to see these
students improve in their English language as they became older. Despite this, I never thought about the many difficulties many of them were
overcoming at the time. I've wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, and now that I am attending college to become one, I am realizing
the different aspects of teaching that I have never thought of. Teaching ELLs is something that never crossed my mind when I thought of becoming a

Grammar, Language, And English Language Essay
Grammar is the system of a language that is needed for a better communication. People sometimes describe grammar as the set of rules of an English
language, but in fact no language has rules. If we think that it is all about rules, there should be someone who created the rules so that other people
can use, learn or practise it. Whereas but languages did not start like that. Languages started by people making sounds which evolved into words,
phrases and sentences. No commonly–spoken language is fixed. All languages change over time. What we call "grammar" is simply a reflection of a

The History of the English Language Essay
The History of the English Language In this paper I will discuss where and how the English language originated and how it has spread to become
one of the most spoken languages in the world. Before I started my research on my topic of choice, my original hypothesis was that the English
language was started by a whole assortment of Germanic tribes invading England thousands of years ago. This ultimately became the goal of my
paper, to see if Germanic tribes started the English language, or if it was started from some other tribes that I was not aware of. The history of the
English language is of significance because English is spoken more frequently than any other language except Chinese, (Bright, 1992). A Germanic

The Proto–Indo–European language was more complex than English today. It is possible to reconstruct three genders (masculine, feminine, and
neuter) and up to eight cases (nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative, ablative, locative, instrumental). Adjectives agreed in case, number,
and gender with the noun. The verb system was also rich in inflections, used for aspect, mood, tense, voice, person, and number. Different
grammatical forms of a word were often related by the feature of ablaut, or vowel graduation: the root vowel would change systematically to express
such differences as singular and plural or past and present tense, as is still the case in English foot/feet or take/took (Crystal, 1997). The
Proto–Indo–European language is thought to have been spoken before 3,000 BC, and to have split up into different languages during the following
millennium (Crystal, 1997). The languages families include Celtic, Germanic, Italic, Indo–Iranian, Tocharian, Armenian, Anatolian, Albanian, Greek,
Balto–Slavic, and Slavic languages. Yiddish, German, Afrikaans, Dutch, Flemish, Frisian, and English make up the West Germanic subgroup of the
Germanic Branch (Crystal, 1997). Scholars renamed the language group the Indo–European family after 3,000 BC (Crystal, 1997). Theorists suggest
that the horse was a major element of the Proto–Indo–European and the Indo–European

the motivations before starting improving English. Goals can help youth to sort out what is important and what isn't. With goals, youth will only focus
on the things that they want to achieve and spend precious time on them. For example, learn to write a good essay during three month set as one's

role in improving English language. McDonough S. (1983: 142) stated that "motivation of the student is one of the most important factors influencing
their success or failure in learning the language." When studying English, youth might face a lot of different problems like environment problem,

Importance Of English Language Arts Essay
What is English Language Arts? How does it differ from English, the language itself? English Language Arts is not a language, but it is the study of
communicating thoughts. Every subject is important in school; each demonstrates a particular skill in education, but Language Arts builds complexity
of a person's learning. Speaking, reading, and writing are all components of language arts. Having these skills are important; the first thing an

However, as I learned more in language arts, I discovered others methods in writing. I know how to create stories by being imaginative, or write

thinking, but it focuses more on applying knowledge in discussions rather than your own thoughts. Learning language arts have taught me to be more
expressive; you will never know if your words could inspire someone one day.
Lastly, English Language Arts build life skills that are crucial in life, to prepare yourself for the outside world. The first impression in an interview
is how you present yourself, not how many achievements you have made. The way you speak, the way you act, the way you answer the questions,
are parts of doing presentations. Senior portfolio is an example of a presentation in high school, and it is taught in English Language Arts class. The
senior portfolio is probably one of the most important projects in one's whole high school career because it reflects your growth as a student and as

English is simply a confusing language to learn. It has "highly irregular orthography" and many forms of consonant clusters (Debatewise). For

Essay About English Language

  • 1. Essay About English Language In Malaysia, English language is stereotypically considered as a person's second or third language. Majority of Malaysians' native language is Malay for Malays, Tamil for Indians, Mandarin for Chinese or colloquial dialects for those from rural areas. In this paper, I would reflect on my English language learning experiences. It has been more than eighteen years since I first learned the English language. There are many factors which contributed to my proficiency in the English language. One of them is early exposure to the language. Growing up, I was exposed greatly to English as a second language. My journey in acquiring English as a second language began from learning at home to receiving education in each level of school to today where...show more content... The books that were used were from Peter and Jane book series. There was a reading teacher hired to sit at the back of the class and students were called one by one to read to the teacher personally. The process was difficult in the beginning as some of English words do not sound the same way as they are spelled. In example, back then I did not know that some of the inflection –ed used in past tense words were inaudible, such as the word 'worked'. The reading process was divided into 4 levels and students with faster pace, managed to complete their readings in a short amount of time. After the students were done reading specific parts of the books, we were required to write the sentences we had difficulties in pronouncing to practice our writing skills. At such a young age, quite a number of the students faced troubles in writing words, some would write the alphabets in their inverted forms. I believe that this process was a big help to the students including myself as speaking is generally easier than reading and writing. In addition to that, if the students managed to behave themselves in the best possible manner, the teacher would reward us by letting us watch English cartoons such as Barney and Friends or Bananas in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Presently, English is the most wide spread language in terms of the number of countries that speak the language as a mother tongue or foreign language. Regardless of languages such as Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish having a great number of speakers, English dominates as a foreign language for many. A Newsweek Magazine article, written by John McWhorter, ranks English as the world's international language today and states it is likely to remain this way in the future (McWhorter). Writer Dorie Clark for Forbes Magazine also supports this claim from an economic perspective, whereas English is seen as the global language of business as well (Clark). The importance of English is measurable by its increasing expansion in several nations around...show more content... Another form of media that the English language dictates is music, specifically the pop genre. Pop music reaches various parts of the world, which is another method of it spreading globally (Mydans). Since the majority of popular music is in English, this is what people hear then it reaches them wherever they may be. This form of music links with popular culture, meaning that when people hear it they feel like it is necessary to learn in order to be "cool". These forms of media are rapidly growing, and the English language dominating them is making the language spread rapidly as well, increasing its global importance. English's significance is also observed through looking at its increasing expansion in parts of the world that do not typically speak the language. Currently, it is the lingua franca ("A medium of communication between peoples of different languages" is the definition provided by the Free Dictionary for the term lingua franca) of Europe (Lingua Franca). Two out of every three Europeans has at least a basic understanding of the language (Doughty). Not only is this, but an EU report claims that English is likely to become even more dominant in the future. Although the popularity of a subject is not equivalent to its relevance, in this case English's importance increases because it is becoming somewhat of a necessity in society to achieve success. China is another area that is growing in its number of English speakers, as more people Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. The Influence Of The English Language Throughout time, English has risen rapidly to become a welcomed global lingua franca. Its ability to adapt to different groups of people and cultures all over the world is one of the factors contributing to its rapid spread and utilisation. So rapid is its spread, that non–native English speakers currently outnumber native English speakers by more than two to one. English is spreading at an unimaginable rate across the world. People spanning the globe are learning English in hopes to acquire a little of the perceived esteem which is augmented by the language. That is, the belief that English is their passport to a new life. A life where further education, finding employment, business expansion and an understanding of popular culture are all opportunities which come hand in hand with this seemingly prestigious language. It is these beliefs which show the hegemonic influence English has over other languages and cultures around the world. Between the 16th to 18th centuries, British colonialism brought English across the world. Whilst leading the Industrial Revolution, the English speaking Britons were also spearheading something much larger: the globalisation of English language. Expanding international trade meant that English was being transported all over the world, and absorbing new words from the many different languages it came across. During this time, the English lexicon swelled immensely, taking on foreign words and giving its vocabulary breadth like no other Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. English Essay: English As A Global Language The English Language A language that is spoken internationally is called "Global" or "World" language. A global language is a language in which people speak internationally on a daily basis, in international organizations and diplomatic relations. It is a "lingua franca", a language that helps people from different backgrounds to communicate with each other. Not many languages that have been established in human history have reached to the point in which they are called a global language, amongst those few languages is English. Approximately 2 billion people around the world use English as a native language, a second language or a foreign language. English is used for many causes, such as; technical and scientific communication, education and employment. The reason why English is a global language is because people tend to learn easier languages. English is a language that doesn't use complex grammar and can be consumed relatively easy. Moreover, there are no grammatical differences between different genders and it consists of less auxiliary verbs than any other language. Another factor that has led English to its popularity is the political and...show more content... Native English speakers are the ones who were born in countries in which English is the official language, therefore; their mother language, and such countries are The USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, these are called the inner circle. English as a second language is used by people whose countries (Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ghana, India, Kenya, etc.) have been invaded by nations that use English as an official language and are called the outer circle. There are also countries known as the expanding circle (China, Japan, Israel and Russia) that teach English as a secondary language in schools and institutes for educational and touristic purposes, therefore being used as a useful tool. • 5. Essay On English Language Teaching English Language Teaching Methods Many countries in Asia like China, Japan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Singapore etc., adopted English as a foreign language not as a second language. Because considering English as a second language and as a Foreign Language is different in their view point. They view that outside of the classroom, English is not that much useful. They teach all the subjects in their mother tongue but in India if one is unable to speak in English he becomes a tabooed person. Many Asian countries treat the pupil's age, sex, race, attitude, intelligence and grasping power in teaching English. Indian teachers neglect this aspect. For ex: a speaker from Hyderabad emphasizes more vowels before many words because of the influence of Urdu. Straight – Istraight. And a Bihari pronounces 'sh' as 's' because of the influence of Kharboli. Teachers don't take into consideration of this aspect and mistreat students. So teachers have to choose the methodology as suit their classroom and environment. If teacher takes all the factors into consideration classroom becomes more meaningful. All the methods are not meaningful when teacher choose them as per the needs of the classroom. Methods of English Language Teaching...show more content... Sometimes more than one method is used to bring out the anticipated outcomes in the language classroom where communication develops the key factor of teaching–learning process. Unless students learn to utilise the classroom method to express thoughts and feelings outside into the real world situations, the learning cannot be effective no matter whatever teaching method is applied in English as a Second Language classroom. Although it comes third after Spanish and Chinese in the total number of speakers, English is the language you'll be able to use most widely, as it's spoken in more countries than any other language. English opens more opportunities There are many countries where English is not an official language, it is often used as a lingua franca. With English, one can communicate effectively in numerous countries, and this opens up lots of possibilities. • 7. Learning English as a Second Language Essay English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First, English is dealt with all the time while staying in an English–speaking...show more content... Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my Turkish English teachers are not the experts in pronunciation and there is no class focusing on speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking and listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and American English, heard brief lectures presented in English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the lectures. The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on listening comprehension tests when they listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native language. Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment showed that learning English from a nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first couple of months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of "very" or "so", and I used to say "according to me" instead of "in my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay on English Language Learner Schools in the United States of America (USA) are facing many challenges, because of the increasing numbers of the English Language Learner (ELL) students. School administrators are trying hard to provide an equal opportunity education to their students. Furthermore, educators are looking forward in providing several methods and technique to help their students to succeed in their academic learning skills. There are many factors that need to focus on and it can be the fundamental when trying to build powerful resolutions, such as parents and community resources, social influences, native language, etc. ELL Families and Schools Teaching is a call, where teachers need to have an understanding about each individual student's cultural...show more content... By allowing the ELL students to use their native and their second language in reading, and writing it will make them move along this new process. Reading and writing experience should be context related and meaningful in order for them to be effective in their learning, even though, they can transfer the literacy skills that they have obtained in their native language towards their second language while they are exposed to more learning experiences. Many challenges are faced by the ELL students and their families by being in a new environment, such as a new language, school, food, beliefs, life style, etc., where they feel that they need to deviate from their home language and their culture, absolutely not, they need to be conceited, revered, treasured. In this matter, our role as educators is to be prepared to work effectively with families (Katz & Bauch, n.d., p. 189), in providing the effective support, and assistant with the full understanding of the new changes in their new environments. On the other hand, social cultural pressure could be increased if students do not have another native individual to relate to; students need to have a teacher who will assist and guide them in learning new a language; without allowing them to lose their cultural identity. • 9. As a future educator, it is important for me to make my classroom a great learning environment for all of my students. Growing up, I would always enjoy hands–on activities in the classroom. I remember looking forward to different holidays because we would be able to participate in an arts and crafts activities while being able to learn about the holiday we were celebrating. Until I started learning more about English Language Learners, I never realized how these activities can be more difficult for some students. Because certain lessons inside of the classroom can be more difficult for ELLs, I think it is extremely important to be able to help them learn the material to the best of their ability. I remember some of my classmates that weren't fluent in English being taken out of the classroom for a few hours to learn separately. Because my school was small, I was able to see these students improve in their English language as they became older. Despite this, I never thought about the many difficulties many of them were overcoming at the time. I've wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, and now that I am attending college to become one, I am realizing the different aspects of teaching that I have never thought of. Teaching ELLs is something that never crossed my mind when I thought of becoming a teacher, however, after learning about the growing amount of ELLs in the Unites States, I think it is necessary to allow them the same educational opportunities as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Grammar, Language, And English Language Essay Grammar is the system of a language that is needed for a better communication. People sometimes describe grammar as the set of rules of an English language, but in fact no language has rules. If we think that it is all about rules, there should be someone who created the rules so that other people can use, learn or practise it. Whereas but languages did not start like that. Languages started by people making sounds which evolved into words, phrases and sentences. No commonly–spoken language is fixed. All languages change over time. What we call "grammar" is simply a reflection of a language at a particular time. When we question ourselves that do we need to learn grammar to learn or acquire a language, the answer is no. It is not necessary to learn grammar and acquire a language but we need to learn the grammar in order for a serious learning of a foreign language or English language. Grammar can help you to learn a language more quickly and more efficiently. It 's important to think of grammar as something that can help you. When you understand the grammar or system of a language, you can understand many things about learning the language. There are many topics in grammar which makes the language better. • 11. For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other subjects. It involves a lot of practices and follow up. When I talk about my personal experience, I would say that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. The History of the English Language Essay The History of the English Language In this paper I will discuss where and how the English language originated and how it has spread to become one of the most spoken languages in the world. Before I started my research on my topic of choice, my original hypothesis was that the English language was started by a whole assortment of Germanic tribes invading England thousands of years ago. This ultimately became the goal of my paper, to see if Germanic tribes started the English language, or if it was started from some other tribes that I was not aware of. It is possible to reconstruct three genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter) and up to eight cases (nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative, ablative, locative, instrumental). Adjectives agreed in case, number, and gender with the noun. The verb system was also rich in inflections, used for aspect, mood, tense, voice, person, and number. Different grammatical forms of a word were often related by the feature of ablaut, or vowel graduation: the root vowel would change systematically to express such differences as singular and plural or past and present tense, as is still the case in English foot/feet or take/took (Crystal, 1997). The Proto–Indo–European language is thought to have been spoken before 3,000 BC, and to have split up into different languages during the following millennium (Crystal, 1997). The languages families include Celtic, Germanic, Italic, Indo–Iranian, Tocharian, Armenian, Anatolian, Albanian, Greek, Balto–Slavic, and Slavic languages. Yiddish, German, Afrikaans, Dutch, Flemish, Frisian, and English make up the West Germanic subgroup of the Germanic Branch (Crystal, 1997). Scholars renamed the language group the Indo–European family after 3,000 BC (Crystal, 1997). For non–native speakers, this irregular grammar is very difficult to grasp and proves as a barrier to any sort of communication in business as it is necessary to sound professional.
