1. Leadership in Crisis Essay
Leadership in Crisis: Ernest Shackleton and the Epic Voyage of the Endurance
1. In what context should the Endurance expedition be analyzed? As a scientific endeavor? An entrepreneurial venture? An exercise in imperial
opportunity? By what criteria should the expedition be evaluated? Given your answer to the preceding question, was it a success or a failure?
I believe that this expedition should be analyzed as an entrepreneurial venture because the South Pole had already been found so there were no more
continents for Shackleton to conquer. He would not be a hero in this venture because Robert Falcon Scott had already been there and died a hero.
Shackleton had to find his own resources for this adventure as most entrepreneurs...show more content...
Was Shackleton an entrepreneur?
I believe Shackleton definitely was an entrepreneur in this expedition. Shackleton had to pursue opportunity and he did with the few resources
that he had. Entrepreneurs are made, not born, and entrepreneurship is a way of managing, not necessarily a way of being as a person. Any of us
can be an entrepreneur. Shackleton showed great skill as a manager and entrepreneur in this situation. He was able to motivate and keep his
"company" together through very hard times. Shackleton was able to revise and reset his objectives as the venture changed many times as well.
This was not a good time to explore the South Pole because England was at war and this expedition had been done before. Not many people were
behind Shackleton at the time of his grand plan to walk across the South Pole. He was considered to be out of touch with his crazy idea. Shackleton
was a huge risk taker that many other entrepreneurs have been in history. He was also proved he was such a great leader that 8 of the men who were
on the voyage, signed up to join him on his next trip to Antarctica.
3. What parallels do you see between Shackleton and other entrepreneurs or leaders whom you have studied? What were Shackleton's strengths and
weaknesses?
The parallels I see to other great leaders and entrepreneurs are: the willingness to never

3. What Makes a Leader? Essay
To me, leadership is more than a title. It is more than just being in charge. Leadership is honestly, learning, listening, and most importantly application.
Leadership means going the extra mile or two, doing the right thing no matter who's looking, staying encouraged and encouraging other even when
times are hard and you have every reason to quit. Leadership doesn't mean you're rich, well known, liked, or respected but it does mean you are a

4. The Five Levels Of Leadership Essay
The Five Levels Of Leadership
By Nick Pollice
Jun 30, 2011
Becoming an effective leader is a lot like being in the stock market. You don 't make your fortune in a day; you make it daily, a little bit at a time.
What matters most is what you do day after day, over the long haul. The secret to leadership success is investing in your leadership development, much
like letting your assets compound. The final result is "Leadership Growth" over time.
Leaders aren 't born; their made. The process of leadership is long, complicated and has made elements. Respect, dignity, discipline, people skills,
vision, emotional strength, opportunity, preparedness and experience are just some of the intangible elements which come into play when talking
leadership.
We can, over a period of time, increase our leadership potential if we can understand and accept the five levels of leadership. They are:
Level One – Leadership From Position
This is the basic level of leadership. At this level people follow you because they have to. Your ability to lead people is totally geared to your position
and does not exceed beyond the lines of your job description or the authority granted to you by the company and your boss. Your security with the
company is based on title and position, not talent.
To be an effective leader at this level know your job, be prepared to accept responsibility, exercise authority with caution, assess the strengths and short

5. Empowerment and Leadership
Leadership is a term that generates a variety of definitions from people. The definition of leadership is defined as much from what a person has
experienced with previous leaders just as much as what they have been taught about leadership. There is a common school of thought that leadership
and management are synonymous. I personally do not participant in that sentiment. I believe that leadership is not the same as management, because
you can lead without having any management or positional power. The author John C. Maxwell defined a test of leadership from management this
way, "To test whether a person could lead rather than manage is to ask him to create positive change."
Leadership is promoting a positive experience and is not due to a position or rank. Leadership can be categorized by three traits. Those traits are;
Empowerment, Discipline, and Character. The first trait, empowerment is one's ability to create a positive change by helping others achieve their
own great success. The second trait is discipline or consistency, which is defined as a leader's ability to gain support from the dependability of their
actions and motivations. The third trait of leadership is an individual's character or professionalism. A leader needs to be professional in all of their
interactions with others regardless of the other person's position or rank.

2. Evaluation
3. Implementation
The two types of innovation include exploratory innovation, which involves generating brand new ideas, and exploitative innovation, which involves
modifying and improving ideas that already exist.[10][11][12][13] It is of importance to note that the ideas generated need to be useful in order to be
considered innovative. Innovation should also not be confused with creativity, which is merely the generation of a novel idea that may not necessarily
be put into operation, although these words are sometimes used interchangeably in research literature when speaking about innovation leadership.
Innovation leadership is a quite complex concept, as there is no single explanation or formula for a leader to follow to increase innovation. As a result,
innovation leadership encompasses a variety of different, activities, actions, and behaviors that interact with one another to produce an innovative
outcome.

who earn the award can leave early from work on a day of their choosing. Having an award system that recognizes our staff will reinforce our

The second practice is to inspire a Shared Vision. A leader should be able to imagine a shared vision for the future. Next, a leader should be able to
inspire others to believe in the common vision. Leadership is about engaging with others to solve problems. Leaders need to know what values, hopes,

Leaders are able to inspire a shared vision by imagining the possibilities and finding a common purpose within their team. Currently, my department is

to both my intelligence and self–confidence, people tend to look towards me for leadership. However, that is simply the position that I am in, it does

their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the desire
and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self–study, education, training, and

The way in which I communicate either builds or can harm the relationship between my soldier and I. When an important moment of discussion
arises, I am always prepared to appropriately handle the situation at hand. More than anything else, I believe as a leader it is always important to
have great social skills in order to be communicative with clarity and objectiveness, and to have a good relationship with the ones I lead. As a
leader, I understand the meaning of recognition and praise when one is doing a good job, which too is significantly important. A leader is not
always the first to have an idea, but should be the one who is always seeking out new solutions. One way of being a productive leader is
discovering new ways to accomplish a set of tasks while maintaining a positive attitude. If a soldier is demonstrating a bad attitude because he feels
that he can not accomplish a task then my job as a leader, would be to steadily encourage that soldier to work at being all that he can be. A leader to
me, does not need to always know the answer, but believes it to be important to have the initiative to make an answer appear. One form of bad
leadership would be an NCO performing or demonstrating a task that he knows nothing about in front of his soldiers. In the result of the NCO not
performing or demonstrating the task at hand correctly, the soldiers then become incapable of knowing the proper ways of that task. However, if that
NCO had

People requires good leadership skills at personal, professional and social level. Personal leadership helps us to determine our desires, strengths and
abilities. It means Knowing what we want out of life; knowing what success is for us; what are our goals and how to achieve those goals regardless
of what other people think, say, or do. Personal leadership helps us to make our present better and shape a good future. Good leadership is also
important to run a business. Usually, in companies, management stresses more on decision– making skills. They believe a timely and smart decision
will help their company to succeed. They forget that implementation of those decisions are as important as making those decision. Without a proper
implementation , there will be no results. Like there is a saying that, it's easier to said than done. Similarly, making a decision will change nothing, its
how to get things done in a timely and an effective way will help an organization to accomplish their goals. Leadership is crucial in implementing
decisions correctly and successfully. Each of us understand importance of leadership when it comes to our country. We all try to vote for the best
person in elections because it matters who is in office. President make decisions concerning our lives, country, and the world. As a nation, we place no

22. Essay on Leadership Theories: Great Man Theory
Chapter 1: Leadership theories
Leadership theories are attempts to answer some of the question people have about leadership. These theories range from simple "armchair
philosophies" about the personal characteristics and effect relationship between leaders and followers and situations.
Great man theory
Thomas Carleyle, an influential Scottish historian, is given credit for the dictum: "the history of the world is but the biography of great men". We can
easily relate to Carleyle's view since specific examples of men who seem to have changed the course of history come readily to mind de Gaulle, Hitler,
Jesus Christ, Lincoln, Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Lenin, and Martin Luther King. Winston Churchill, a man who for many personifies the...show

Great man leaders owe, at least, some of their greatness to circumstances and followers.
Leadership trait theory
This theory is based on the premise that there are certain personality characteristics that are essential for a person to possess in order to be a leader. The
main emphasis is on what the person is in terms of a constellation of personality traits. This theory searches for that set of universal leadership traits that
will assure success. Numerous traits have been suggested: courage, integrity, loyalty, charisma, ambition, intelligence, honesty, clairvoyance,
persistence, arrogance, health, political skill, confidence and vision.
The major problem with this theory is that no one has ever found a set of leadership traits that could be supported as truly universal an essential to
successful leadership. Years of leadership research have not led to the conclusion that there is any consistent pattern of personality traits that
characterize leaders.
Many factors have contributed to the failure to discover the leadership trait: difficulty and measuring and describing personality traits; problem in
establishing cause and effect relations (due traits cause leadership or does leadership cause traits?); and disagreements on the meaning of terms, such
as loyalty and courage and even leadership
However, the primary factors that accounts for the failure to establish a definite link between personality traits and leadership is the same factor that
limits the value of great

23. Leadership and Change Essay
Change is when a person does not follow their everyday routine. They may want to try something different, or be forced to. Change can be for the
good and the bad. Places can deal with change ranging from the weather, to the animals present, or the seasons changing. Also, objects can deal
with change too. Objects like an iceberg can start to melt, or a forest fire can kill many trees in an area. As a human, we are the ones deciding on
change. We are in a position to make big decisions and possibly even become a leader in order for change to happen. If one person starts to change,
others will follow and hopefully, the change benefits all. Change affects us in the work place, participating on a team, and in society....show more

If a leader took initiative to show others the seriousness of global warming, we could save animals lives. The penguins from the book Our Iceberg
is Melting, had a mixture of emotions while dealing with change. Some embraced the change of moving icebergs while others tried to convince
the others moving was a bad idea. The penguins embraced change by having Fred discover their iceberg was in danger. He then told Alice, who is
a penguin with higher authority and they formed a bigger team of penguins. "None of those with whom Alice spoke showed any enthusiasm about
the idea of swimming into a big dark cave" (Our Iceberg pg 20). The team of penguins brought the idea of changing icebergs to the colonies
attention and had their scouts search for a new home. After searching, the scouts found a new iceberg which was safer for the penguins and in the
end, most of the penguins adapted to their new home and made new traditions. The move was a success and some of the penguins who were
originally against the change are happier with the new iceberg. This past year the Stockton Softball team hired a new coach to add our staff. The
hitting coach was new to all the returning players because we had never had a coach specifically for hitting and a new addition to the staff. The whole
team and I had to adapt to change because the new coach had new rules, expectations, and

24. Concept of Leadership
Concept of Leadership
Leadership – what is it? Many definitions have been offered, cultural stereotypes abound, numerous programs focus on leadership development, but the
question remains. In fact, leadership is many different things to different people in different circumstances. When we think ofleadership, we often think
first of famous individuals. We may think of great political leaders: Washington, Churchill, Roosevelt. We may think of the leaders of social
movements: Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Caesar Chavez. We may think of spiritual leaders: Jesus, Mohammed, Mother Theresa. Do we also include
in our definition some of the infamous leaders such as Hitler, Stalin, or David Koresh? Obviously, leadership is not always or...show more content...
In Leadership Is an Art (1989), De Pree asserts that "the first responsibility of a leader is to define reality". Bennis (1990) writes that leaders
"manage the dream" . Vision is defined as "the force which molds meaning for the people of an organization" by Manasse (1986).
According to Manasse, this aspect of leadership is "visionary leadership" and includes four different types of vision: organization, future, personal,
and strategic. Organizational vision involves having a complete picture of a system's components as well as an understanding of their
interrelationships. "Future vision is a comprehensive picture of how an organization will look at some point in the future, including how it will be
positioned in its environment and how it will function internally" (Manasse, 1986). Personal vision includes the leader's personal aspirations for the
organization and acts as the impetus for the leader's actions that will link organizational and future vision. "Strategic vision involves connecting the
reality of the present (organizational vision) to the possibilities of the future (future vision) in a unique way (personal vision) that is appropriate for
the organization and its leader" (Manasse, 1986). A leader's vision needs to be shared by those who will be involved in the realization of the vision.
Shared Vision.
