What's it about.
When you’re watching an official remake of the
much-acclaimed Hollywood film, Warrior, you
pretty much know what’s in store. But director
Karan Malhotra changes a few things to add
his touch of ingenuity and ends up tampering
with what was actually sensible. The film opens
with an ex-fighter Gary Fernandes (Jackie
Shroff) walking out of prison after completing
his term for a crime he had committed that
changed his life forever. His elder son David
(Akshay Kumar) has disowned Gary because
of that and also cut off ties with his younger
‘adopted’ brother Monty (Sidharth Malhotra).
David is facing his own personal and financial
battles as he and his wife Jenny (Jacqueline)
cope with their daughter suffering from a
kidney ailment. David, a schoolteacher, has
been indulging in street fights to make the
extra cash. But when an international MMA
(mixed martial arts) tournament decides to hold
stage in Mumbai, David decides to take part
in it to earn enough to save his daughter’s life.
At the same time, Monty also wants to win the
tournament to earn respect in his father’s eyes.
What eventually happens in the ring and how it
changes the family’s destiny is what the rest of
the film is about.
What's hot.
Karan Malhotra divides the film in two clear
halves. The pre-interval story focusses on
the dynamics between the brothers and their
flashback, while the second packs a solid
action packed punch. Jackie Shroff steals
the show in several scenes. Mind you, in the
original, Nick Nolte got nominated for an Oscar
for this role, and it won’t come as surprise if
Jackie too is acknowledged next year for his
work in Brothers. Right from his fragile body
language to his emotional outburst, Jackie gets
it right every time. Akshay is a perfect cast
as the elder brother David who will go to any
extent to save his daughter. He not only looks
the part, but also brings in a lot of emotions in
his scenes with Sidharth. The fight scenes look
real, a lot of hard work has gone in making
sure they look authentic. You will be rooting
for Akshay through out the second half, and
the climax fight between him and Sidharth
is a major highlight. Kareena Kapoor Khan’s
Mary song is everything glamorous that you
expect from an item track.

Story
Two individuals are brainwashed by their gurus
into becoming suicide bombers, with their
mission being that of blowing up a gathering of
religious leaders from all over the globe. Their
journey has several twists and turns.
Analysis
The basic premise of Bangistan is interesting in
itself. This quirky comedy tells you the simple
story of two naive men, willing to go to any
length for their respective faiths.
Action kick-starts in North and South
Bangistan, a fictitious but beauteous land
where opposing faiths, the Muslims and the
Hindus, have their headquarters. A voice over
informs you in a tongue-in-cheek fashion that
bombs go off here at the least provocation,
hence the place is aptly named Bangistan.
Hafeez (Riteish) works in a BPO and speaks
chaste English with an American accent
(hilarious). On the South side of this mountain
town is Praveen(Pulkit), who is the Hanuman of
the local Ram-Lila. Both Hafeez and Praveen
are impressionable so their sects choose them
for a special mission. They are told that to
show reverence to Allah and Bhagwan, they
must destroy people from the opposite faiths.
When the opportunity to accomplish their
objective, albeit without raising any suspicion,
presents itself at a religious conference
scheduled in Poland, the men set off of on their
journey. They prepare for D-day at Wilfred's
rooming house in Krakow. Lodged one floor
above the other, the simpletons discover that
they more inclined to be friends than foes.
And that's where their moral dilemma actually
starts. The charming bartender (Jaqueline) at
the lodge is also someone the two of them take
a shine to. Songs are sung and merriment is
had, giving this satire the required light-hearted
touch. The director, who wishes to depict the
futility of war fought in the name of God and
religion, stays on track. Despite the dry choice
of subject, Bangistan makes valiant attempts
to keep the humour alive during its two-hour
running time.
The characters of Riteish and Pulkit, who do
not have a single mean bone in their bodies,
are convincing as the Dumb and Dumber
combo; blundering bumpkins who are a misfit
on a terror journey.

Story
Srimanthudu is the concept of Harsha (Mahesh
Babu) who is the son of a millionaire Ravi
Kanth (Jagapathi Babu). He has his own
plans and dreams about his career but he has
been forced to take over the business by his
father. This is the time he meets Charuseela
(Sruthi Haasan) and comes to know about
Rural Development Programs. In this process
he gets attracted to her ideologies and gets
inspired for them. At the same time he falls in
love with her and he comes to know about the
roots of his family and his village Devarakonda.
He then decides to adopt the village and
develop it. He will surrounded by evils and
the rest of the movie is how he struggles to
save his village from the evils and end up
developing it. Watch the movie to know about
the rest.
Analysis
The first half of the film has been fresh and
entertaining through it. It takes some time to
know about the characters in the movie and
Mahesh’s one liners have been outstanding
throughout. The songs have been shot
beautifully and the content has been handled
with utmost care. The emotional episodes
have been balanced well and the racy pre
interval episodes make the film catch pace.
On the whole the first half of the film has been
dominating and decent.
For a film like Srimanthudu which has been
casted with stars, the second half is crucial
and as expected the second half of the film
has been filled with racy action episodes and
huge dose of emotional drama. The scenes
connect straight with the audience and have lot
of impact. Though there are scenes that have
been boring, the complete second half of the
movie has been outstanding and the climax
has been short and simple. On the whole the
second half is a perfect take in all the aspects.
Final Word
Srimanthudu is sure a movie that should be watched
with the entire family to get connected. Mahesh's
terrific performance and the emotional episodes
make the film a must watch.

Story
Simbu spends his life happily with his friends.
One day Simbu saw Hansika and falls in love
with her. He tries to impress her with the help
of his friends. But, everything changes when
he teams up with other gang to earn money.
All of a sudden, he realizes that he has
teamed up with culprits and he guessed the
danger with them. He faces troubles and he
lost everything because of that gang. How he
overcomes all the difficulties forms the rest of
the story.
Artistes Performances:
Actor Simbu is back with his performance
after three years. Santhanam’s comedy is the
major highlight of this movie. Actress Hansika
looked beautiful and her expressions, dialogue
delivery impressed the audiences.
Actor Aditya who was in a villain role, delivered
a powerful performance. Remaining cast of the
movie is okay in their respective roles.
Plus Points:
• Simbu and Santhanam’s comedy is the major
highlight of this movie
• Dialogues deserves a special mention.
• Sizzling chemistry between Hansika and
.Simbu
Minus Points:
• Second half of the movie could have been
trimmed
• Screenplay laces the pace
Analysis:
Camera work is excellent. Fight sequences are
top notch. Cinematography is nice. Production
values are rich. Director Vijay Chander did a
good job. Thaman’s background score is nice.
Final Word
In one word, Vaalu is Simbu’s Out and out
mass show

has been introduced as
the Son of Legendary actor
Superstar Krishna who has
entertained the audience for
over three decades in more
than 350 films. Mahesh has
completely selected his own
path in signing movies and
he had his own formulas for
commercial cinema. He has
achieved stardom at an early
stage in his career. He was
the fourth of the five children
of Telugu actorKrishna
and Indira succeeding
Ghattamaneni Ramesh
Babu, Padmavathi, Manjula
Swaroop and preceding
Priyadarshini. Mahesh's
childhood was spent mostly
in Chennai. Krishna always
managed low profile for his
kids so that they have a
smooth life in schooling and
college.
Mahesh was hugely
interested in movies from
his early age. He has done
movies as a child artist in
movies like Sankharavam
(1987),Bazaar Rowdy
(1988), Mugguru Kodukulu
(1988), Gudachari 117
(1989) and Koduku Diddina
Kapuram (1989). Mahesh
made his debut as a lead
actor in Rajakumarudu in
1999 which was a huge
commercial hit. He played
a young Kabaddi player in

with the 2005 film Athadu,
another high grosser in
Telugu cinema. Pokiri was
the biggest blockbuster in
the career of Mahesh and
it smashed all the existing
records in the history of
Telugu cinema. The movie

and Seethamma Vaakitlo

decent box-office figures

audience. He has a strong

highest paid Telugu actress

a backward village from
Mahabubnagar in Telangana.

How did you come into
films?
I was doing home school and
little bits of modelling post
school in London, when I first
came to India at 17 to shoot
for a magazine. One of the
first people I met in Mumbai
was Anaita Shroff Adajania.
And I then met Atul Kasbekar
and Reshma Shetty as they
were working together at
that time. I had always been
adventurous and fearless,
but the difference was that
this time, I had come alone
to India. I somehow sensed
a huge amount of warmth
in everybody and felt that
Mumbai is this one big cuddly
city, where everybody is so
nice.
So, I would go to Famous
Studios every day and stand
in the long line, holding the
placard with my name and
number and audition for all
kinds of ads. Very quickly, I
started getting selected for a
lot of my auditions. The only
one I didn't get selected was
where, in one of them, I was
required to play kabaddi,
as I didn't know what was
kabaddi. I started modelling
and after a few years of doing
that, I got my first Hindi small
but apt role in Sarkar. My first
big break was in Maine Pyaar
Kyun Kiya with Salman.
Did Salman Khan have a
role in casting you?
At that time, for almost all the
films that I was a part of, a lot
of the actors had a say in it
and of course, Salman was
very supportive of me.
What are you like?
I still have a lot to discover
about myself, but I know
that I am intelligent. I have
invested a lot of time from a
very young age in actively

pursuing work and wanting to
establish myself in the world.
I worked with so much focus
and passion, that maybe it
not only helped consume a
lot of my head space from
a very young age, but also
made me discover who I am.
But there are times when no
matter how hard you work
and what you do, how much
you want something, there
will be things you cannot
change and you have to
accept that. And the great
thing of getting through that
time of your life is that you
know that things are not as
bad as they may seem at
times and you can go through
a lot and still be happy. And
still survive and still be strong
and still come out.
Which was your lowest
period?
I am very emotional and
incredibly sensitive. I am
actually very sensitive, shy
and emotional, but closed to
people who I don't know. I
just have to know you and
if I like you, then 99% I will
love you till the end of my
life and it would be very
unusual if anything can
change that. I also have high
expectations from people that
I like and thus can get deeply
disappointed if I am hurt by
them. And my emotional
reactions are quite dramatic.
Being emotional, while you
may be career-focused and
ambitious but your most
strong emotions are evoked
by love, so your lowest point
turns out to be connected
with heart breaks, as that's
when you feel the most pain.
Which are the directors
you are emotionally close
to?
Ali Abbas Zafar (Mere
Brother Ki Dulhan), Kabir
Khan (Ek Tha Tiger) and
earlier when I was worked
with Vipul Shah on Singh
Is Kinng and Namastey
London. I am also very fond
of Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar
and Ayan Mukerji. I will feel
missed out if in the future
they will cast others, but so
far such a situation has not
presented itself to me.
What is Ranbir Kapoor like?
In the time that I have known
Ranbir, since Saawariya
released, I have seen a
lot of change in him as a
person. Not only from the
proximity that I have known
from, but also as an outsider,
given how much he has
matured and evolved as a
person. The film industry is
where he belonged and was
immediately accepted, but I
have seen him hugely grow
even as an actor. Ranbir is
like me, in the way that he
is very loyal and emotional
to the people he really cares
about in his inner circle,
which is very small. He can
come out very detached to
people outside of that.
The only difference between
his behaviour and my
behaviour, let's say on a
film set, is that while he is
incredibly charming and
polite with everyone that he
comes in contact with, I don't
think he yet realises what an
important and amazing trait
that is, I will get tired after
saying a good morning to just
three people. He is incredibly
polite at all times and makes
that extra effort to come out
of that circle of introspection
and make that other person
feel good.
I see in him a lot of depth and
he has so much in him that
probably even he has yet to
discover. I think he has the
capacity to help people even
more than he does

Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra's
Brothers has been faring pretty well at the
India box office, even in its second week.
The tale of two warring siblings, directed by
Karan Malhotra, has collected an amount
of Rs 78.7 crore in the country. With two
new films hitting the theatres this week -
Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte's
Manjhi The Mountain Man and Abhishek
Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor's All Is Well
- the business of Brothers has lessened
somewhat, but the film is still strong.
Despite its slow start, the film went on to
break a few records and became the second
highest week-1 earner of 2015 with a brilliant
collection of Rs 72.60 crore. However,
with All Is Well and Manjhi eating into the
collection pie, the second weekend did not
prove as lucky for the “brothers” as the first
week did. The film earned Rs 1.40 crore on
Friday (day 8), Rs 2.00 crore on Saturday
and Rs 2.70 crore on Sunday, bringing
the total collection of the film to Rs 78.70
crore. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted,
“#Brothers [Week 2] Fri 1.40 cr, Sat 2 cr, Sun
2.70 cr. Total: Rs 78.70 cr. India biz.”
Mixed Martial Arts films foraying into the
Indian Industry once again, is a good sign for
films based on sports.
This is the official remake of English films
‘Warriors’. It is the story of two brothers with
have different problems in life and the same
drunk fighter father. While one fights for an
ailing daughter, other fights for the father.
The final showdown of the movie proves to
be the drawing factor.

but it's a decent business, the collections
are around $2.4 million in first weekend,
as business in the Gulf (850k approx) and
Pakistan is pretty good but with US at
$400,000 approx and UK at £175,000 approx,
the film will not be going best.
Trade Analyst Komal Nahta said, “On
the whole, Brothers, a mixed martial arts
film, may carry mixed reports, but it will
ultimately prove to be a paying proposal for
all concerned. It will do good business in
multiplexes and single-screen cinemas, and
in ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ and ‘D’ class centres.”

Is it a conscious decision
to take up only powerful
female characters?
Tabu. Yes, because I
gravitate towards characters
that have something about
them. All characters I play
should have something edgy
about them and should have
a significant impact on the
story.
What challenges did
you face in playing
a cop with negative
shades in Drishyam?
Tabu. To play a cop is always
very exciting for any actor.
My character in Drishyam is
fantastic. I have not played
something like this since a
really long time. It is nice to
play a powerful person and
the violence was necessary
in the film.
Why did it take you so
long to work with Ajay
Devgn again?
Tabu. Ajay and I have
been growing in our own
directions. Our paths did not
cross but that does not mean
that we were not friends. Ajay
is the same as he was during
Vijaypath. As far as Drishyam
is concerned, Ajay Devgn is
the hero. Without him the film
would have been impossible.
He is a huge star and he is
the reason why people are
talking about the film.
How would you actually
describe the film or its
genre?
A: I would call it an unusually
gripping format. It is a very
different story, a thriller
with mystery, drama and
emotions. It is about families
too, and you get involved with
the emotions of Ajay’s family
and my own. At the same
time, it is a smart cop story in
which everyone has a point,
is fighting circumstances
and doing their best for their
families. Finally, it shows
that appearances can be
completely deceptive.
You are branded as a
choosy, offbeat or art
film person who hankers
after awards.
A: (Laughs) That’s not true
at all. If awards come to me,
it is fine. I must do justice to
the character and be able
to perform well. That’s my
criterion when I sign any film.

Sidharth Malhotra is a busy
man to catch. The actor,
on the eve of the release of
his second movie, Hasee
Toh Phasee, is doing
promotional tours around
the country. But it is difficult
to tell from his excited and
eager appearance that he
has been doing back-to-back
interviews all day. There is
a lot to talk about as well —
from his modelling years to
being an assistant director
on My Name is Khan, his
big launch in Bollywood and
being nervous about his new
movie, which sees him in the
solo lead.
That Sidharth Malhotra does
not come from a background
in cinema, with a famous
name attached is the first
question he’s often asked.
But the 29-year-old actor is
not much concerned about
that. “There are many new
producers and directors
today who want to make
good and different kinds
of films. It doesn’t matter if
you have a relative in the
industry or not,” he adds.
What matters, he says, are
the choices you make. “For
me, the most difficult move
was when I chose to quit
modelling, and applied for
a position of an assistant
director,” he says.
Brothers is an official
remake of Warrior. Why
do you think this movie
works in a Bollywood
setting?
"Well it has so much for
a Bollywood audience. It
is a great emotional story
of how this family breaks
apart and what impact and
repercussions that has on
the children. And when they
grow up how they resolve
it. The two brothers are
extremely traumatised due
to the path that they had and
they take up a profession as
Mixed Martial Arts Fighters
and it's about how they
eventually resolve that. It
has the Hindi film emotion in
it, but the packaging is very
Western, so it works for both
audiences."
Did you watch the
original film and how
did you go about
ensuring the portrayal
of your character was
not influenced by the
original film?
"Well I have definitely seen
the original before the film
happened and before it came
to me. Once I heard the script
my character was totally
different from Tom Hardy's
character. My character is the
only one that's not similar to
the original, so there was no
point referring to the original.

The film features lots of fight
sequences. What went into
training in Mixed Martial Arts
for the role?
"When I signed this film
I realised I had to be
convincing in the ring.
There's a skill that is
required. And I decided to
gain some weight to look
more empowering and
convincing in the role. I took
about four months off after Ek
Villain and all I did was train,
eat and sleep. We used to
have to train five, six hours a
day, gym training and then I
was training in different types
of martial arts, be it training
in boxing, Thai boxing, ju
jitsu, there's Chinese martial
arts. Because I was facing
an iconic action hero like
Akshay Kumar, you'd better
be prepared when you
punch and kick in front of
him, because unless you're
convincing there's no point
trying to match up to him. I
remember taking a lot of ice
baths, because that's really
good for muscle recovery.
So for ten fifteen days I took
ice baths every other day.
So there's a lot of physical
transformation and a lot of
pains I've gone through for
this role."
Who were your role
models in film?
"I used to be a big fan of
Mr Amitabh Bachchan. I've
seen a lot of Shah rukh khan
films and I got to work with
him as an assistant director.
Especially since I wasn't from
the industry I used to see
all the popular films. Even
Akshay sir's Main Khiladi Tu
Anari or the Khiladi series
or Hera Pheri and today I'm
working with him. I've had so
many fan boy moments and
today I just feel really happy
to be in this position to be
part of this industry and to
now be working alongside
these stars."

Phantom
Saif Ali Khan shoots for ‘Phantom’ in Kashmir.
'Phantom' will be shot in the Valley for five
days but it was not clear whether Katrina is
joining the shoot.
BThe snow-bound
famous ski resort of
Gulmarg in north Kashmir
was agog with activity today
as Sajid Nadiadwala’s
upcoming action-thriller
‘Phantom’, starring Saif
Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif,
commenced shooting near
the resort.
Saif joined the crew and
the shooting is underway at
Kangdoori in the periphey
of the resort, 55 kms from
here, officials said.
The film will be shot in the
Valley for five days but
it was not clear whether
Katrina is joining the shoot.
While rest of the crew led
by director of the movie
Kabir Khan arrived in the
valley last week, Saif joined
them in Gulmarg today, the
officials said.
Most of the shooting in the
film during the next four
days is scheduled to take
place at the breathtaking
locales of the hill resort – a
star attraction for tourists
especially during winter
when it is covered with
several feet of snow.
The film began shooting
in October 2013 in Beirut,
Lebanon and during the
shoot in Lebanon, the cast
and crew were provided
security due to the political
instability in the country.
Saif, who plays the lead
role, will be seen speaking
lines in Kurdish, which the
actor reportedly learned
specially for his role. The
movie is about post 26/11
attacks in Mumbai and
global terrorism, where
Saif Ali Khan and Katrina
Kaif play the role of secret
agents.

Brother’s director Karan
Malhotra, who had earlier
made AGNEEPATH (starring
Hrithik Roshan), has tried
only too hard to live upto
everyone's expectations,
which is something that
shows in the film. In an
attempt to do so, even
though he captures the
emotions strongly, he starts
struggling with the pace in
the first half of the film, which
is dedicated in establishing
the film's set up and the
emotional drama.
Even though the film is
an 'official remake' of the
Hollywood film WARRIOR
(which had Tom Hardy and
Joel Edgerton), it is really
sad to see that BROTHERS
is nowhere even near to the
original film. Karan Malhotra
seems to have lost his way
in adaptation of the film's
screenplay.
Having said that, Karan
Malhotra needs to be given
the brownie points for
'treating' the viewers with
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)
and also in successfully
portraying the struggles of a
middle class Indian family.
The last fifteen minutes of the
film are a must watch.
What was it like working
with Akshay Kumar?
KM: Akshay was an
indispensible casting for the
film. I have been quite eager
to work with Akshay for the
last two decades. He has not
been using a body double
since 1990s and that makes
him one of the best action
heroes of India, in our time. I
am very lucky and honored to
have worked with him.
What was it like to work
with Sidharth Malhotra?
KM: He gave me more than
he could which is great. The
film required so much hard
work and dedication and
we all gave it our best. It
is a very difficult role and
Sidharth gave it his all and
more, so it wasn’t too difficult
for me to direct him..
Tell us about the boxing
ring sets in the film
Answer: To clarify it isn’t a
boxing ring set. It’s MMA
which stands for mixed
martial arts. It’s a mixed
martial arts film, not a boxing
one. The ring that was
constructed is an authentic
design for MMA fighting.
The sad part here is that,
the drama in the first half
fails to stir the emotions of
the audience. The extremely
slow and snail-paced first
half makes you impatient
considering that you are
in the theatre to watch a
hardcore action film. The
lengthy first half comes
across as a big hindrance.
Karan Malhotra could have
trimmed the first half by a
good 15 minutes to make it
look and feel crisper. The
film, by all means, picks up in
the second half. Despite this
pick up, Karan's story-telling
seems to be losing grip in the
second half as all the focus
is totally on the film's action
sequences.
Karan Malhotra has managed
to capture the action scenes
really well and is probably the
first for a Bollywood film.

Shukla is now working on his
next film All is Well alongside

– Oh My God! (2012), the
filmmaker now returns with

moved on to make a light
hearted family drama instead
with Abhishek Bachchan and
Rishi Kapoor.
Back then, OMG – Oh
My God! had taken a low
opening of just a little over
4 crore. However, it had
managed to do a business of
over 20 times as the lifetime
total went on to cross the 81
crore mark; an amazing feat
indeed. Such was the kind of
hype that the film managed
to create purely on the
basis of word of mouth that
despite Akshay Kumar in just
a special appearance and
Paresh Rawal being the hero
of the show, the film went on
to gain a Superhit tag.
Now that All Is Well stars
Abhishek Bachchan as a solo
lead four years after Game,
Umesh isn’t thinking about it
much.
“It is producers who think
about solo lead and all. When
I script a film, I don’t think
much about such matters.
When I write, I think about
characters,” says Umesh
Shukla.
He goes on to add, “In any
case, Every Friday, things
change. In OMG – Oh My
God!, Paresh Rawal was the
hero and Akshay had just an
eight days role. People got to
know about it in the first show
and even then they were
fine because everything was
fitting in well into the overall
content. Same is the case
with All Is Well too. I know
that the content is strong
here as well.”
As for Abhishek’s
spearheading the show,
Umesh is happy with what he
got from the actor.
“For an actor, to play a
passive character is more
difficult than being active,”
the director says, “Abhishek
has played a brooding
character so very well in films
like Guru and Yuva. Now he
would be seen in a new avtar
in All Is Well.”

The movie tells the story of two brothers, Vijay and Ravi

Plot:
The movie tells the story
of two brothers, Vijay and
Ravi Verma, who follow
different career paths: Vijay
is a smuggler and Ravi the
policeman who is asked
to hunt Vijay down. Vijay
Verma (Amitabh Bachchan)
and Ravi Verma (Shashi
Kapoor) are the sons of
a trade unionist, Anand
Verma(Satyen Kappu), who
was defeated and disgraced
by the management of his
firm using his family as bait.
Unable to bear the public
disgrace father deserts the
family, and the sons are
raised by their mother(Nirupa
Roy)who brings them to
Bombay City, who suffers
the trials and tribulations of
a poor single mother. Vijay
Verma, the elder brother,
underdog is however Nirupa
Roy, she plays her part with
perfection. The type of role
she played doesn´t come
quite often, and she played
it wonderfully. The heroines
of the film are Neetu Singh
(opposite Shashi Kapoor)
and Parveen Babi (opposite
Amitabh Bachchan). Though
they have very short roles,
they are still better than the
"two songs, four scenes"
heroines of today, like Sonali
Bendre and a few others.
The music of the film was not
very popular, but the song
"Tune mujhe maanga mujhe
paaya hai…." is hummable.
It has a list of 9 awards to
add to its kitty with best
direction, screenplay, story,
dialogues, sound, actors,
including the best film.

Rajesh Khanna and Navin
Nischol were the first choice
for Vijay and Ravi's roles but
Salim-Javed insisted that
