The whole process has
a very significant and
unique system of activities

found that not even a
single item required
throughout the whole
process is imported from
outside the district.
The design of the
fabric is mostly in
checks and stripes
using a combination of
vegetables dyed colours,
to get a wide range of
designs. Traditional
motifs signifying the
different clans and

weavers of various clans.
Geometrical patterns,
Floral and Animals motifs
which are prevalent in the
area and which form part
of the culture are often
used.
The handloom artisans
in the district belongs to
the poorer section of the
community. Therefore,
frequent change of the
product, designs, colour
pattern and other new
innovations in the market
has put pressure to the
handloom weaver who
has to bear the cost of
the trail production before
the same product is
introduced in the market.
The main problems faced
by the weavers are:
Incapability to take bulge
order - which means
larger investment which
is impossible for the poor
weaver.
Frequent change of
product version in design
and pattern-means
increase in making cost.
Inability to face new
uncertainties.
Inability to maintain
the quality standards
like Fabric structure,
specificity, designs,
colour ,etc, - due to
the entire production
process being manual
and labour intensive and
usually done in small and
disperse set up.
Most of the weavers
are part-time weavers,
because of lack of
proper work place during
monsoon. The district
receives rain almost six
month in a year i.e. from
April to September.

Bengali Kayastha
BASU
B
Basu (variants: Bosu, Boshu, Bose) is a common
Indian surname found among Bengali Hindus.
The frequently observed variant is the
anglicized form “Bose.”
Basus belong to Kayastha
caste in Bengal. The
Bengali Kayasthas evolved
as a caste from a category
of officials or scribes,
between the 5th/6th century
AD and 11th/12th century
AD, its component elements
being mostly Brahmins
and according to Wink,
putative Kshatriyas. Basus
are considered as Kulin
Kayasthas, along with
Ghoshes and Mitras.
Indian (Bengal) and
Bangladeshi Hindu
(Kayasth) Basu derive
from Bengali bosu (from
Sanskrit vasu, which has
many meanings including
‘wealth’, ‘gem’, ‘radiance’).
It is an epithet of Shiva and
of several other gods.
Kayastha is a caste or
community of Hindus
originating in India.
Kayasthas are considered
to be members of the scribe
caste and have traditionally
acted as keepers of public
records and accounts,
writers and administrators
of the state.
Kayasthas have historically
occupied the highest
government offices, serving
as ministers and advisors
during early medieval
Indian kingdoms and the
Mughal Empire and holding
important administrative
positions during the British
Raj.
Earlier the surnames
like Basu / Chanda /
Deb / Chaki were textile
weavers (Tanti). Mitra were
Carpenter (Chhutor). Ghosh
were Milkmen (Goyala).
By origin Kayasthas are
heterogeneous but trying to
form homogeneity.
According to legend, five
Kayasthas migrated to
Bengal around 1050 AD 1.

fortune in the general elections with the slogan
of bringing Achche Din, symbolising economic
prosperity accompanied with enough number of
jobs for the teeming millions.
Prime Minister has been successful
in ensuring political stability and
providing decisive leadership with bold

However, Krishna entered
the cave and hid, after
quickly covering the body of
Muchukunda with the silken
robe that he was wearing.
When the demon entered
he mistook the sleeping
Muchukunda for Krishna and
tugged at the robe.
Muchukunda woke up,
startled. Looking around he
saw the fierce Kalayavana
standing before him and cast
such a fiery gaze the demon
was burnt to ashes.
Then seeing the whole cave
illuminated , he started
searching for the source of the
light and discovered Krishna
standing at a distance.
Muchukunda shows his
devotion and asked Krishna
to bless him so that he would
always be able to live in
service of God.
Muchukunda who had not
slept for several ages due to
the prolonged fight, asked for
a peaceful sleep. The gods
granted his wish and he
slept for many yugas, till the
Dwapara yuga when Krishna
arrived.
One day, while living in
Mathura, Krishna was
attacked by the demon
Kalayavana. He wanted to
get rid of the demon and ran
to Muchukunda’s cave. The
arrogant demon thinking
that he would be able to kill
Krishna, also followed.
Muchkunda was born to the same Ikshvaku dynasty as king
Rama. He was so powerful that even Indra would seek his
help. Once, unable to bear the onslaught of the demons,
the gods came to him for protection. He became their
commandant and helped them to win the battle, but in the
process he lost his family. Pleased at his service, the gods
allowed him to ask for any boon.

Everybody is in search of having a healthy
living. But the solution for healthy living
is available with everybody, but not able
to see it. The mother nature has given us
plenty of options for leading a healthy
life, but we are here to do everything
against the nature and get different kinds
of diseases.
WATER
Drink 1–3 glasses of warm/
cold water in squatting position
after rising from the bed in the
morning.
Drink at least 8–12 glasses of
water everyday with a frequency
of one glass every 2 hours.
Vital Factors
Breathe deeply and keep erect
posture always.
Cultivate the habit of passing
motions twice a day.
Bathe twice a day with cold/
neutral water.*
Pray/meditate twice a day.*
Once in the morning before
sunrise and once at night.

H-IBvisa reform should be
by Congress: Pramila Jayapal
Pramila Jayapal, Congresswoman has cautioned the Donald
Trump administration against hasty changes in the H1-B visa
regime, saying this should be done via the legislative route
rather than through a presidential executive order.
Jayapal, as part of a US
Congressional delegation
touring India headed by leader
of the Democrats in the House of
Representatives Nancy Pelosi,
believes that there is bipartisan
support for continuing the H1-B
visa program “perhaps with some
changes”.
She is hopeful that the Trump
administration will continue to
prioritize India though there are
concerns about the growing process
between the US and China and US
and Russia but she feels that India
“should be right in there”.
“You can’t just stop processing
when people have been waiting
in line for three years to get those
H1-Bs and then put a barrier there
and then say you are not going to
get these…,” Jayapal told IANS in an
interview.
“There has to be a thoughtful roll-
out to any changes we might want
NRI IMMIGRATION
45. JUNE 2017 | WWW.WISHESH.COM
to make to the H1-B program
and really it should come from
Congressional authority, not
from the President’s executive
orders,” she said.
Her comments come after
President Trump signed
the “Buy American, Hire
American” executive order
last month to bring in major
changes regarding the H1-B
visa program, including
closing loopholes for
immigration fraud and a shift
from the current lottery system
to a mechanism that favors
higher-paid and higher-skilled
workers.
Stating that every country
has to make sure that it is
taking care of its workers,
Jayapal, said that the H1-B
visa program “is incredibly
valuable”. She said that there
has been some abuse of H1-B
visas and that needed to be
addressed.
“But I really do believe that
there is a lot of bipartisan
support for continuing the
H1-B visa program, perhaps
with some changes,” said the
Chennai-born former pro-
immigration advocacy activist.
She said: “He
(Sensenbrenner) raised the
issue of H1-Bs in an internal
meeting and you know, I think
again that there is a lot of
support for an H1-B program
that provides opportunities for
Indians to come to the United
States, provides opportunities
for them to stay and also
benefits India and Indian
companies.”
“We were so proud of
President (Barack) Obama at
many levels but certainly the
fact that he prioritized US-
India relations was a huge
benefit I think to the United
States and to the world and I
think probably those relations
between India and the United
States were never better in
the last few years,” she said.
“We very much want this
administration to continue
to prioritize this relationship.
We hope that they appoint
an excellent ambassador (to
India) very soon.”
Jayapal said that apart
from diplomatic ties, “there
are independent economic
relationships that have been
established regardless of
which administration is in
office”.
Stating that there is an
increased interest in South
Asia, she said: “I don’t think
that the President himself is
going to determine whether
or not there are ties with
South Asia. We are going to
make sure that we continue
to lift up the region and the
importance of the region
and the importance of the
contributions of the South
Asian Americans to the United
States.”
Stating that every
country has to
make sure that it
is taking care of its
workers, Jayapal,
said that the H1-B
visa program
“is incredibly
valuable”. She
said that there has
been some abuse
of H1-B visas and
that needed to be
addressed.

The International Court of Justice has stayed the
hanging of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav
sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on
charges of spying. The order came a day after India
approached by The Hague-based ICJ against the death
sentence handed down to Jadhav by Pakistan’s field
general court martial in April.
India has accused Pakistan
of violating the Vienna
Convention and said Jadhav
was kidnapped from Iran
where he was involved in
business activities after
retiring from the Indian
Navy, but Pakistan claimed
to have arrested him from
Balochistan on March 3,
2016.
India moved the ICJ
because it feared Pakistan
could execute Jadhav
without providing him the
legal remedies available
to him in that country.
DESI NEWS
Bigblow to
Pakistan from ICJ
49. JUNE 2017 | WWW.WISHESH.COM
The Indian challenge is
primarily based on Pakistan
violating Vienna convention
on consular relations.
Among other things, the
agreement allows diplomatic
representatives to visit their
nationals held prisoner by the
host country. India argued
that Pakistan had ignored a
bilateral treaty on consular
access.
Senior advocate Harish Salve
is representing India.
“Pakistan shall take all
measures at its disposal
to ensure that Mr Jadhav
is not executed pending
the final decision in these
proceedings,” the ICJ ruled
in a unanimous and binding
decision.
Ronny Abraham, the Hague-
based court’s president,
asked Pakistan to inform the
tribunal that it will implement
the ruling, and stressed that
ICJ decisions are binding on
all state members.
“As far as Pakistan is
concerned, the court’s
decision today has not
changed the status of
Commander Jadhav’s case
in any manner,” said a
statement from the Pakistani
attorney general. “The court
has clearly underscored that
the provisional measures are
without prejudice to the final
determination of the merits
and jurisdiction of the case.”
India, denied Jadhav is a
spy and had urged the UN
court to declare the verdict
illegal and order Pakistan to
release him. India argued
in a preliminary hearing
at the ICJ that Islamabad
has violated the Vienna
Convention on Consular
Relations by denying Jadhav
access to legal assistance.
Deepak Mittal, the Indian
lawyer, told the tribunal that
Jadhav was “an innocent
Indian national” who had
been held incommunicado
“for more than a year on
concocted charges”.
But Pakistani representatives
accused India of “political
grandstanding” and told
the court Jadhav “has
confessed to having been
sent by India to wage terror
on the innocent civilians and
infrastructure of Pakistan”.

“This is something for which
we have everything in place
but we will go when we find
the market is conducive,”
Bhattacharya said on the
sidelines of the St. Petersburg
Economic forum.
Bhattacharya said that SBI
would likely opt for selling the
shares via a QIP, a method
under which a listed company
can issue equity shares and
some other securities to a
select group of institutional
buyers.
“It’s a good way of raising
funds in the sense that you
are then able to go with
people who have always
supported you as well as
bring more investors into
India. It’s a comfortable
format to work with,” she
added.
Bhattacharya said that the
market would have to be
a “little patient for at least
two quarters before we are
in a position to show good
numbers”. Bhattacharya
said it was yet unclear if the
telecoms losses could prove
a bigger risk for the entire

The State Bank of India will have a planned share sale by the

Indian economy but saw
warning signs.
“If you see a sector
developing a set of conditions
that lead to stress it bears
watching. The telecoms
sector, due to various things
that happened in the recent
past, is showing those typical
signs of stress and obviously
therefore we need to look
out,” she said.
Bhattacharya said SBI’s
exposure to the weakest
telecoms companies was
“very very low” but noted
the bank had expressed its
concerns to the government
recently.
“When we wrote to the
minister we did that for
the entire banking sector
and believe this is not just
Indian banks but there are
companies that have debts
to overseas banks too,” she
added.
Bhattacharya said, “We
need a framework (for
restructuring) but the
framework needs to be
flexible. At this point it is
a rigid structure and it is
not possible to take deep
restructurings through that
structure.”
“We need something that will
enable people who are having
difficulties, who believe they
may have paucity of capital,”
she said. “Some kind of
relaxation is given, allowing
them to make provisioning
over a period of eight quarters
and that is something that
would be very helpful.”

forum at which Russian
and foreign businesspeople

Narendra Modi is attending

Culprit as shield
Indiansappreciate
Major Gogoi
INFOCUS
In an intelligent and much thought decision Major Leetul
Gogoi of the Indian Army tied Kashmiri man Farooq Dar to
the bonnet of a jeep as a ‘human shield’, which has saved
many lives. The decision has prompted the stone pelters to
not stone at the Army personals. Indian Army officer Leetul
Gogoi, has been given an award by the army for his ‘sustained
efforts’ in counter-insurgency operations.
The award for Major Gogoi
is seen as a backing of the
action of the officer belonging
to the 53 Rashtriya Rifles.
Major Gagoi and his
team found themselves
surrounded by a mob of over
1,000 people hurling stones
and petrol bombs. When his
repeated announcements
failed to deter the crowd he
caught hold of an alleged
stone-pelter Farooq Ahmed
Dar, who was standing 30
metres from his vehicle and

tied him to his jeep thus
ensuring safe path to the
security personal and polling
officers.
The entire country has
applauded the action of the
Major. His presence of mind
has saved many lives and
also kept the situation, which
was otherwise explosive,
under control.
Attorney-General Mukul
Rotagi said, “I salute Major
Gogoi, Major Gogoi risked
his life for the nation. His
critics are speaking rubbish
and they have no respect
for valiant soldiers who are
laying down their lives every
day so that we can sleep and
work in peaceful conditions”.
Deputy Chief Minister of
Jammu and Kashmir, Nirmal
Singh said, “Major Leetul
Gogoi’s act of tying a man
to a jeep as a human shield
against stone-pelters should
not been seen as human
rights violation and there
should be no politics over it.
Gogoi had saved many lives
by showing presence of mind
in a particular situation.”
Cabinet minister Jitendra
Singh and Member of
Parliament from Udhampur
said, “It is a huge vindication
for every patriotic Indian
and also redemption for all
of us at a time when it was
being believed that certain
perverted apologists were
dominating the discourse.
Those criticising Major Gogoi
are compromised.”
BJP general secretary Ram
Madhav said, “Everything
is fair in love and war. I
appreciate and applaude the
security forces for saving
the lives of innocent people
and not falling into the trap of
militants, whose only agenda
is to celebrate the death of
every Kashmiri every day.”
Retired Colonel Anil Kaul
said, “He saved lives of
people without even firing a
bullet despite being attacked
by stone-pelters. His act
should be applauded and he
should be given a Shaurya
Chakra.”
Former Chief of Army
Staff NC Vij said, “I must
compliment the army chief
for the award, to make sure
that young officers do not
feel discouraged to do their
duty.”
General GD Bakshi (retired)
said, “They are screaming for
the scalp of that young Major
Gogoi who tied a stone-
pelter on his jeep. I think in
retrospect that the boy did
some out-of-the-box thinking
and saved lives on both
sides. The standard military
solution would have been to
shoot the pelters dead.”

PPhadke is known as the father of
the Indian armed rebellion and he
has provided the inspiration for
fellow freedom fighters. Bankim

various contemporary acts of
patriotism performed by Phadke
during his freedom struggle.
Phadke was born on 4 November

Maharashtra state in a Chitpavan
Brahmin family. As a child he
preferred learning wrestling rather
than high school education and

in Pune was his mentor. Salve,
an expert wrestler, operated

FREEDOM FIGHTER
It was during this period that
Phadke began attending
lectures by Mahadeo
Govind Ranade which
mainly focused on how the
British Raj policies hurt the
Indian economy. Phadke
was deeply hurt by how this
was leading to widespread
suffering in the society. In
1870, he joined a public
agitation in Pune that
was aimed at addressing
people’s grievances.
Phadke founded an
institution, the Aikya
Vardhini Sabha, to educate
the youth. While working
as clerk, he was not able to
see his dying mother due to
the delay in approval of his
leave. This incident enraged
Phadke and happened to be
the turning point in his life.
Three social reformers and
revolutionaries Phadke,
Laxman Narhar Indapurkar
and Waman Prabhakar
Bhave in 1860 formed the
Poona Native Institution,
which later came to be
known as Maharashtra
Education Society. Later
he established the Bhave
School in Pune through
this set the foundation for
the nation’s education. The
society runs Abasaheb
Garware College, MES
Perugate Bhave School,
Vimalabai Garware School
and Rani Laxmibai Girls’
Military School and other
such 51 educational
institutes in six districts
In 1875, after the then
Gaikwad ruler of Baroda
was deposed by the
British, Phadke launched
protest speeches against
the government. Severe
famine coupled with the
evident apathy of the British
administration propelled him
to tour the Deccan region,
urging people to strive for a
free republic. Unable to get
support from the educated
classes, he gathered a band
of people from the Ramoshi
caste. People from the Kolis,
Bhils and Dhangars were
also included later.
He taught himself to
shoot, ride and fence. He
organised around 300 men
into an insurgent group that
aimed at liberating India
from British rule. Phadke
intended to build an army

they decided to break into
government treasuries.
The first raid was done in
a village called Dhamari in
Shirur taluka in Pune district.

The income tax which was
collected for British Raj was
kept in the house of local
business man Mr. Balchand
Fojmal Sankla. They
attacked the house and took
the money for the benefit
of famine stricken villagers.
There they collected about
four hundred rupees but this
led to his being branded as
a dacoit. To save himself
Phadke had to flee from
village to village, sheltered
by his sympathisers and
well-wishers, mostly the
lower class of the society.
Impressed by his zeal and
determination, the villagers
of Nanagaum offered him
protection and cover in the
local forest. The general
plot would be to cut off
all the communications
of British forces and then
raid the treasury. The main
purpose of these raids was
to feed famine-affected
farmer communities. Phadke
performed many such raids
in areas near Shirur and
Khed talukas in Pune.
The leader of Ramoshi,
Daulatrav Naik, who was
the main supporter of
Phadke, headed towards the
Konkan area on the western
coast. On 10-11 May 1879,
they raided Palaspe and
Chikhali, looting around 1.5
lakh rupees. While returning
towards Ghat Matha, Major
Daniel attacked Naik, who
was shot dead. His death
was a setback to Phadke’s
revolt, the loss of support
forced him to move south to
the Shri Shaila Mallikarjun
shrine. Later, Phadke
recruited about 500 Rohilas
to begin a fresh fight.
He once had a direct
engagement with the
British army in the village
of Ghanur, whereafter the
government offered a bounty
for his capture. Phadke in
turn offered a bounty for
the capture of the Governor
of Bombay, announced a
reward for the killing of each
European and issued other
threats to the government.
A British Major, Henry
William Daniell and Abdul
Haque, Police Commissioner
to the Nizam of Hyderabad,
pursued the fleeing Phadke
day and night. The British
move to offer a bounty for his
capture met with success:
someone betrayed
Phadke, and he was
captured from a temple
after a fierce fight at the
district of Kaladgi on 20
July 1879 while he was on
his way to Pandharpur.
He was taken to Pune for
trial. Ganesh Vasudeo
Joshi, known as
Sarvajanik Kaka, defended
his case. Phadke and his
comrades were housed in
the district session court
jail building, near Sangam
bridge. His own diary
provided evidence to have
him sentenced for life.
Phadke was transported to
jail at Aden, but escaped
from the prison by taking
the door off from its hinges
on 13 February 1883. But
his escape was too short
lived. He was recaptured
and put back in prison.
Phadke then went on a
hunger strike to death. On
17 February 1883 Phadke
breathed his last breath
as a result of his protest
hunger strike.
Phadke is known as the father of the Indian armed rebellion
and he has provided the inspiration for fellow freedom fighters.
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s patriotic novel Anand
Math incorporated various contemporary acts of patriotism
performed by Phadke during his freedom struggle.

THE CROCODILE POSE
INDIAN YOGA
Makarasana in Sanskrit means “Crocodile pose”, because
this Pose resembles a Crocodile resting in the ocean. The
crocodile keeps its neck and face above the water. A similar
form is seen in this pose. Makarasana is an Asana for all
spherical stretching of the body. Makarasana straightens
and stretches the muscles of the rear, buttocks, legs and
the back of the arms and legs. The crocodile posture in
yoga is additionally an excellent pose to cut back stress
and improves body posture. The aim of Makarasana is to
unleash strain caused by other Poses.

A sedentary lifestyle is a type of lifestyle with
little or no physical activity. A person living a
sedentary lifestyle is often sitting or lying, while
reading, socializing, watching television, playing
video games, or using a mobile phone/computer for
much of the day.
A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to many
preventable causes of death. Excessive
screen time is linked to negative health
consequences.
Lack of physical activity is one of the
leading causes of preventable death
worldwide. Sitting still may cause
premature death. The risk is higher among
those that sit still for more than 5 hours per
day. It is shown to be a risk factor on its
own independent of hard exercise and BMI.
The more still, the higher risk of chronic
diseases. People that sit still for more than
4 hours per day have a 40 percent higher
risk than those who sit fewer than 4 hours

Relationship
Between Friends are
very Important
Everybody have friends and are very particular
in maintaining the relationship. Some
friendship are life long, while others are short
living. Friends are the most important entity
that is reachable during the good and bad
happenings in our life. But maintaining a
healthy relationship with friends are sometimes
cumbersome.
RELATIONSHIP
Friendship is a relationship
of mutual affection between
people. Friendship
is a stronger form of
interpersonal bond than
an association. Although
there are many forms
of friendship, some of
which may vary from
place to place, certain
characteristics are present
in many types of bond.
Such characteristics
include affection;
sympathy; empathy;
honesty; altruism; mutual
understanding and
compassion; enjoyment
of each other’s company;
trust; and the ability
65. JUNE 2017 | WWW.WISHESH.COM
to be oneself, express
one’s feelings, and make
mistakes without fear of
judgment from the friend.
While there is no
practical limit on what
types of people can form
a friendship, friends
tend to share common
backgrounds occupations,
or interests and have
similar demographics.
Making and keeping
friends can be particularly
tough if you are shy or
unsure of yourself. The
best way to make new
friends is to be involved
in activities at school and
in the community where
there are other people your
age. Another way to make
friends is to be friendly and
helpful to other people.
Talk to people, get to know
them, and find out if you
have something in common
with them.
As you get older, some of
your friendships will start
to change and some may
grow deeper. You might
also begin to know many
more people, although
not all of them will be your
close friends. Chances
are, you will also start to
spend more time with your
friends and maybe talk on
the phone more. Changes
in relationships are natural
but not always easy.

Romance
After knowing about the newly elected
France’s President Emmanuel Macron’s
wife Brigitte Marie-Claude Macron’s
age, it has become a trend to romance
with an elder woman.
LOVE & ROMANCE
with an elder
woman
As the word old also means experienced
and mature, which is what you expect a
partner to be like. Older women rather than
being a liability are independent and never
mess with your head. A man dating younger
women is almost cliche but the society is
yet to give way to the idea of young men
dating older women.
Tips To Attract An Older Woman
The difference between your ages is
inversely proportional to your
chances of dating her. It is better
to be prepared beforehand and
face the least despair.
Try to gain knowledge of her
psyche. Observe her in the group
where she spends time and
understand her likes and dislikes.
Find a way to get close to her.
Try a more discreet manner, like,
become an acquaintance to any
67. JUNE 2017 | WWW.WISHESH.COM
of her siblings, cousins or
other relatives of your age.
Try to attract her attention
with something she likes.
Make her laugh, but don’t
do something clumsy that
you end up becoming just a
laughing stock for her.
If you are trying to get into
the skin of a much older
woman then the best way
is to keep your wild attitude
and spice it up with a
substantial hint of maturity.
Chivalry always works
with women of all ages
and tastes. Gentlemen are
always held in high esteem
by ladies. Display your soft,
but reliable side to win her trust
and respect.
Try not to flatter her because
unlike younger girls, she will
easily see through it. Instead go
for the praise which you really
find she is worth.

Awadh was known as the

important strategically for
the control of the Doab, the

rivers. It was a wealthy
kingdom, able to maintain its
independence against threats
from the Marathas, the British
and the Afghans. The third
Nawab, Shuja-ud-Daula
fell out with the British after
aiding Mir Qasim, the fugitive
Nawab of Bengal. He was
comprehensively defeated
in the Battle of Buxar by
the East India Company,

after which he was forced to
pay heavy penalties and cede
parts of his territory. The British
appointed a resident in 1773,
and over time gained control of
more territory and authority in
the state. They were disinclined
to capture Awadh outright,
because that would bring them
face to face with the Marathas
and the remnants of the Mughal
Empire.
Many independent kingdoms,
such as Awadh, were
established when the Mughal
empire disintegrated. Awadh’s
capital, Lucknow rose to
prominence when Asaf-ud-
The treaty of 1801 formed
an arrangement that was
very beneficial to the
Company. They were
able to use Awadh’s vast
treasuries, repeatedly
digging into them for
loans at reduced rates.
In addition, the revenues
from running Awadh’s
armed forces brought
them useful revenues
while it acted as a buffer
state. The Nawabs were
ceremonial kings, busy
with pomp and show but
with little influence over
matters of state. By the
mid-nineteenth century,
however, the British had
grown impatient with the
arrangement and wanted
direct control of Awadh.
In 1856 the East India
Company first moved its
troops to the border, and
then annexed the state,
which was placed under
a chief commissioner
- Sir Henry Lawrence.
Wajid Ali Shah, the then
Nawab, was imprisoned,
and then exiled by the
Company to Calcutta. In
the subsequent Revolt
of 1857 his 14-year old
son Birjis Qadra son of
Begum Hazrat Mahal was
crowned ruler, and Sir
Henry Lawrence killed in
the hostilities. Following
the rebellion’s defeat,
Begum Hazrat Mahal
and other rebel leaders
obtained asylum in Nepal.
Daula, the fourth Nawab,
shifted his court here
from Faizabad in 1775.
The city was also North
India’s cultural capital,
and its Nawabs, best
remembered for their
refined and extravagant
lifestyles, were patrons of
the arts. Under them music
and dance flourished, and
many monuments were
erected. Of the monuments
standing today, the Bara
Imambargah, the Chhota
Imambargah, and the
Rumi Darwaza are notable
examples. One of the more
lasting contributions by the
Nawabs is the syncretic
composite culture that has
come to be known as the
Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb.
In 1798, the fifth Nawab
Wazir Ali Khan alienated
both his people and the
British, and was forced to
abdicate. The British then
helped Saadat Ali Khan to
the throne. Saadat Ali Khan
was a puppet king, who in
the treaty of 1801 ceded
half of Awadh to the British
East India Company and
also agreed to disband his
troops in favor of a hugely
expensive, British-run
army. This treaty effectively
made the state of Awadh
a vassal to the British East
India Company, though it
notionally continued to be
part of the Mughal Empire
in name until 1819.

Those company troops
who were recruited from
the state, along with some
of the nobility of the state,
were major players in the
events of 1857. The rebels
took control of Awadh, and
it took the British 18 months
to reconquer the region,
months which included the
famous Siege of Lucknow.
Oudh was placed back
under a chief commissioner,
and was governed as a
British province. In 1877
the offices of lieutenant-
governor of the North-
Western Provinces and
chief commissioner of Oudh
were combined in the same
person; and in 1902, when
the new name of United
Provinces of Agra and Oudh
was introduced, the title of
chief commissioner was
dropped, though Oudh still
retained some marks of its
former independence.
The city played an important
role in both the First War
of Independence and the
modern Indian freedom
struggle. Whether it was the
Lucknow Pact of 1916 or the
Khilafat Movement, it brought
the citizens on a united
platform against the British
rule. In the Khilafat Movement
Maulana Abdul Bari of Firangi

participated and cooperated
with Mahatama Gandhi and
Maulana Mohammad Ali.
In 1901, after remaining the
capital of Oudh since 1775,
Lucknow, with a population
of 264,049, was merged in
the newly formed United
Provinces of Agra and Oudh.
However, it became the
provincial capital in 1920
when the seat of government

Upon Indian independence in

in order to mobilize peasant

Lucknow Chikan work
Lucknow is famous for its small
scale industries that are based
on unique styles of embroidery,
namely, Chikan and Lakhnawi
Zardozi, both of which are
significant foreign exchange
earners. Chikan has caught the
fancy of fashion designers in
Bollywood and abroad.
Chikan is a traditional
embroidery style from Lucknow,
India. Literally translated,
the word means embroidery.
Believed to have been
introduced by Noor Jehan,
Mughal Emperor Jahangir’s
wife, it is one of Lucknow’s most
famous textile decoration styles.
Chikan began as a type of
white-on-white (or whitework)
embroidery. Traditionally,
white threads were used
on semi-transparent muslin
cloth. However, with the
advent of newer fabric types,
and changing demands and
fashions, Chikankari is now
also being done on a variety of
fabrics including synthetic ones
and in various colours. Sequin
work is also done on the fabrics
along with Chikankari to give it
an exquisite and glittering look.
The fact that Chikan embroidery
has returned to fashion and

resulted in production of
exquisite pieces and products of
very dubious taste.
Creation of a Chikan work piece
begins with the use of one or
more pattern blocks that are
used to block-print a pattern
on the ground fabric. The
embroiderer then stitches the
pattern, and the finished piece
is carefully washed to remove
all traces of the printed pattern.
The patterns and effects created
depend on the types of stitches
and the thicknesses of the
threads used in the embroidery.
Some of the varieties of stitches
used include backstitch, chain
stitch and hemstitch. The result
is an open work pattern, jali
(lace) or shadow-work. Often
the embroiderer creates mesh-
like sections in the design by
using a needle to separate
threads in the ground fabric,
and then working around the
spaces.

Golden period of Buddha
INDIAN HISTORY
Siddhartha Gautama was a prince who lived in the kingdom of
Sakyas, near the present day border of India and Nepal, more
than 2500 years ago. The young prince was raised in great
luxury, but was not happy. He wanted to understand what
caused human suffering. He did not understand why some
people were rich and others were poor. Why some people were
healthy and others sickly.
75. JUNE 2017 | WWW.WISHESH.COM
Siddhartha left his palace
and lived as an ascetic.
An ascetic is a
person who has
few material
possessions and
has given up all
pleasures and
comforts. He
prayed and fasted.
Siddhartha fasted
so strictly that he
nearly died, but he was
still not satisfied. Finally,
Siddhartha sat down
under a bodhi tree
and determined to
understand why he
had failed to find
a satisfying way
of life. Late that
night Siddhartha
Gautama became
enlightened.
Siddhartha told people
of his enlightenment.
He became well known for
his teaching. Siddhartha’s
students called him “the
Buddha,” which means “the
Enlightened One,” and the
followers of Siddhartha’s
teachings are called
Buddhists.
Buddha taught his
followers to seek balance
in their lives. The path
to happiness is neither
through indulgence nor
denial, but a “middle way.”
Siddhartha taught them
to put aside the ego and
escape the cycle of death
and rebirth to reach Nirvana.
Gautama Buddha laid
emphasis on non-violence
and compassion in his
teachings. The realisation
that life is full of sorrow
leads to a boundless love
for living things. This love is
compassion or Karuna.
Panchasheel: The rules of
conduct that are in keeping
with the eight-fold path are
known as the Panchasheel.
Ahimsa, asteya, control
over the bodily desires,
truthfulness and not taking
intoxicants are the five rules
or the Panchsheel. Gautama
Buddha sermoned in Pali,
the language of the people,
to preach.
Bauddha Sangha:
Gautama Buddha wanted
his doctrine to reach the
masses. He, therefore,
organised his followers
into Bauddha Sanghas.
Those followers who left
their homes and entered
the Bauddha Sangha were
called Bhikkshus (monks).
Strict rules of conduct were
prescribed for the Bhikkshus.
People of all castes were
allowed into the Sangha.
People from all castes of
society entered the Sangha
in large numbers, as caste
was no barrier. Buddha
established women’s
sanghas, too.

its oval shaped GTO, the South Asia
Satellite is now orbiting the Earth with
a perigee (nearest point to Earth) of
169 km and an apogee (farthest point
to Earth) of 36,105 km with an orbital
inclination of 20.65 deg with respect to
the equator.
Few seconds before the launch
countdown reached zero, the four
liquid propellant strap-on motors of
GSLV-F09, each carrying 42 tons of
liquid propellants, were ignited. At count
zero and after confirming the normal
performance of all the four strap-on
motors, the 139 ton solid propellant first
stage core motor was ignited and GSLV
lifted off at 16:57 IST. The major phases
of the flight occurred as scheduled.
About seventeen minutes after lift-off,
South Asia Satellite was successfully
placed in GTO.
Soon after separation from GSLV,
the two solar arrays of the satellite
were automatically deployed in quick
succession and the Master Control
Facility (MCF) at Hassan in Karnataka
assumed control of the satellite.
South Asia Satellite is a communication
satellite built by ISRO to provide a
variety of communication services over
the South Asian region. For this, it is
equipped with Ku-band transponders.
Following the successful launch, the
Honorable Prime Minister of India, Mr.

precedence. The Prime Minister
recalled that two years ago India made
a promise to extend the advanced
space technology for the cause of
growth and prosperity of the people of
South Asia and felt that the successful
launch of South Asia Satellite marks a
fulfilment of that.
In the coming days, the satellite orbit
will be raised from its present GTO
to the final circular Geostationary

Keep the bed in the South-west
portion of room and let your child
sleep with head towards the
South or East, the direction for
peace of mind.
Door of children’s room should
not directly face the bed.
South-west direction is best for
placing furniture, avoid any kind
of furnishing in the middle or

Verse meaning
All living bodies subsist on food
grains, which are produced
from rain. Rains are produced
by performance of yajna
[sacrifice], and yajna is born of
prescribed duties.
Explanation
Food grains or vegetables are
factually eatables. The human
being eats different kinds of
food grains, vegetables, fruits,
etc., and the animals eat the
refuse of the food grains and
vegetables, grass, plants, etc.
Therefore, ultimately, we have
to depend on the production
of the field and not on the
production of big factories.
The field production is due
to sufficient rain from the sky
and such rains are controlled
by demigods like Indra, sun,
moon, etc., and they are all
servants of the Lord. The Lord
can be satisfied by sacrifices;
therefore, one who cannot
perform them will find himself
in scarcity—that is the law of
nature. Yajna, specifically the
sankirtana-yajna prescribed
for this age, must therefore be
performed to save us at least
from scarcity of food supply.
Lord Krishna has pointed
out the virtues of performing
yagna or worship according
to the Vedic injunctions and
the demerits incurred by
ignoring the Vedic prohibitions
and failing to perform yagna.
He points out the folly of
non- performance of yagna
beginning annad bhavanti
meaning food strengthens
living beings. All beings have
evolved from and waxed strong
from foods. Production of food
is dependent on rain and rain is
dependent on yagna which is
dependent upon the activities
performed as prescribed in the
Vedas. This is the chanting
of Vedic mantras and offering
the oblations such as ghee
or clarified butter and seed
grain such as sesame into the
sacred fire. In Manu Samhita
III.76 it has been presented
in another way: the oblations
offered into the fire ascend to
the sun, from the sun comes
clouds and rain, from rainfall
food is grown and from food
beings come into existence.

Dhola–Sadiya Bridge
longest in India
INDIAN EVENTS
The Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola–Sadiya Bridge), is a
beam bridge in India, connecting the northeast states
of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The bridge spans over
the Lohit River, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra
River, from the village of Dhola in the south to Sadiya to
the north. At 9.15 kilometres (5.69 mi) in length, it is the
longest bridge in India.
87. JUNE 2017 | WWW.WISHESH.COM
With rapid movement of
India’s defense assets in
mind following incursions
by the Chinese Army, the
Dhola–Sadiya Bridge has been
designed to handle the weight
of 60-tonne (130,000-pound)
tanks such as the Indian
Army’s Arjun and T-72 main
battle tanks. Since the Sino-
Indian War, China has disputed
India’s claim to Arunachal
Pradesh politically and
militarily, making the bridge an
important tactical asset.
The bridge is among a series
of infrastructure projects that
PM Modi has fast-tracked since
taking charge after a landslide
win in 2014. Launched
a decade ago under the
government of former Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh,
PM Modi’s biggest challenge
is to see these projects to
completion without the years-
long delays that have beset
many key endeavours in
Asia’s third largest economy.
The Ministry of Road
Transport and Highways
completed a feasibility study
of the project in August 2003
after demands from local
constituents. In January 2009
the bridge was approved for
construction with funding
from the Government of India
as part of the Arunachal
Pradesh Package of Roads
and Highways.
Construction began in
November 2011 as a public-
private partnership with
Navayuga Engineering
Company, with an expected
completion in 2015.
However, due to construction
delays and increased cost,
the bridge’s completion date
was pushed into 2017.
The project cost around Rs10
billion (US$155 million) and
construction took over five
years to complete. It is 3.55
kilometres (2.21 mi) longer
than the Bandra Worli Sea
Link in Mumbai, making it the
longest bridge in India.
The bridge was inaugurated
on 26 May 2017 by Indian
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi. The bridge is named
after Bhupen Hazarika, a
famous musician, poet,
filmmaker and lyricist from
Assam.
The bridge will reduce the
distance from Rupai on
NH-37 in Assam to Meka/
Roing on NH-52 in Arunachal
Pradesh by 165km, cutting
down on travel time from the
current six hours to just one
hour.
