2. • Francisco de Paula Santander was a lawyer who joined the
cause of independence from an early age.
• He fought beside Simón Bolívar in the war for South American independence
• He was vicepresident of Great Colombia between 1821 and 1827 and in
1828
• Santander came to be known as "The Man of the Laws“
• He went into exile to Europe, but during his stay, there, he was named president
of New Granada in 1832, a position he held until 1837.
3. During his government several aspects were highlighted:
• The creation of 700 primary schools were promoted.
• Introduced new teaching methods.
• Reformed curricula taught at colleges and universities.
• Colonial taxes (sales taxes) were abolished.
• Taxes related to the importation of some goods to favor
national craftsmen were increased.
• Borders with Ecuador and Venezuela were established.
• The government of the Catholic Church based in the Vatican
recognized the New Granada as a new state
