Allied forces launched Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944, code named D-Day, invading German-occupied northwestern France across the English Channel. General Dwight Eisenhower commanded the largest seaborne invasion in history with over 5,000 ships and 11,000 aircraft supporting the D-Day landings in Normandy. Although over 4,000 Allied troops were killed or wounded, the invasion was ultimately successful in liberating Western Europe from Nazi control by August 1944.
