habitat. House sparrow, Passer domesticus is a small
bird, locally known as ‘kuruvi’ is closely associated
with human habitation.
Sparrow population has decreased considerably in
many parts of the globe in particular urban suburban
gradient.

5. METHOD OF STUDY
Study Area
 The study was undertaken in Oddanchatram, a town in
dindigul District of Tamil Nadu, India. The survey was carried
out from June 2014 to August 2014. In oddanchatram 8
places were selected for survey. They are categorized into
market area and residential area.
Method - Walkover Survey
 The number of House Sparrow was counted by following
walkover survey method. The house sparrows are active from
8.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. In each study site, the number of birds
was counted by 30 minutes observation. The nesting sites of
house sparrow were also observed.
In the present work five points were chosen in each study site
with the distance of 250 m and recorded the population by
standing in a point by observing the house sparrow within a
radius of 10 m.

6. Data analysis
The observations were made on the abundance of
house sparrow in different weather and locations(
such as, number of old storey buildings, area under
cultivations and number of cell phone towers in the
study sites)
Data were statistically analyzed using simple mean
calculations on the occurrence and abundance of
house sparrows at different study locations and
different weather conditions in the interval of 15
days.

8. DISCUSSION
The study reveals that population growth and
urban civilization is having a great impact on the
survival of the house sparrows.
 Thus it is clear that there is more availability of
food sources are in the rural area than in urban
areas.

9. Conclusion
It is our duty to conserve the House sparrow
from their extinction by get ridding of urban life
style and providing them an appreciable space to
live.
