CHAPTER 1
Introduction
Academic stress has been a problem that’s affecting students for the longest now.
Especially now that schools have transitioned from online classes to face-to-face classes,
students are struggling more in adjusting to the new normal.
Wilks (2008) defined academic stress as the body’s response to academic-related
demands that exceed adaptive capabilities of students. It is estimated that 10–30% of
students experience some degree of academic stress during their academic career. This
may be due to the examinations, deadlines, difficulty in organising work, poor time
management that results in students' academic stress and their social skills.
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), social skills is a set
of learned abilities that enable an individual to interact competently and appropriately in
a given social context. It is any type of communication with others where the social rules
and relations are created. A student's social skills play an important role in them
academically. Some students want to learn more but are scared to communicate or
socialize with others. Social skills are developed in childhood as children learn to interact
with others. Social skill development happens at different points in life, depending upon
several factors.
The impacts of academic stress on the social skills of the senior high school
students is that if they lack in communicating with others it will affect them academically
and may result in the stress that they feel. Senior high school students also need
motivational quotes and deep understanding so they know how they will cope up with
the stressors and improve their social skills. They also need to help themselves to have
enough courage, because in that way, they can lessen the stress that they feel. Another

important factor that affects their academic stress on their social skills is them
being invalidated by their classmates or teachers. Being invalidated by others has a direct
impact on how an individual excels academically. In this research, we will be going to
know the stressors of senior high school students and how it affects their social skills.
Background of the Study
Academic Stressor distracts students to excel when it comes to academics. There
are several types of stressors that we can cope with. These types of stressors is actually
occured before and caused a lot of unusual behaviour that people do not normally do such
as nail biting, heavy breathing, teeth clenching, and hand wringing. When people are
stressed, they may feel cold hands and feet, and sometimes-increased heart rate, which
all are regarded as common physiological effects of stress, which can be connected to
emotion of anxiety (Auerbach & Gramling, 1998)
Gresham and Elliott (1984), defined social skills as a learned behavior that a
student is taught that will enable him/her to interact with persons in ways that elicit
positive responses and assist in avoiding negative responses. Academic skills are being
defined as the basic and complex cognitive skills that are the primary educational
outcome of elementary and secondary schooling.
Diperna (2006) stated that duringthe past two decades, researchers have tried to
determine the factors contributing to students’ failure in the classroom relating to
academic achievement. Some researchers, who have contributed to the research, have
characterized the interplay as what will enable students to have academic success in high
schools.
Diperna and Elliott (1999) assumed that a student’s academic achievement and
success in classroom learning included their attitude and behavior that goes beyond the
foundation of the educational setting.
Diperna and Elliott (2000) attempted to identify and describe some factors that may
contribute to a student’s academic success as “enablers” – interpersonal skills, study

skills, motivation and engagement. However, the one limitation in their research was that
the academic “enablers” were explored in isolation rather in relationship to one another.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine and analyze the impacts of academic stress on the
social skills of the Senior High School Students with the following questions:
What are the stressors that students are experiencing when they are at home and
at school?
How do students cope up with academic stress?
How does academic stress affects the social skills of the Senior High School
Students in terms of the following:
- Communicating and Cooperating
- Effective Communication
- Active Listening
Research Hypothesis
Ho: There is no impact of academic stress in social skills among Senior High School
Students of Lingunan National High School

Scope and Delimitations
The scope of this study is mainly focused on investigating the impact of academic
stress on the social skills of the Senior High School Students of Lingunan National
High School. The data collection was conducted among Grade 11 and 12 Senior High
School students who are currently enrolled in Lingunan National High School school
year 2022-2023. A survey questionnaire was utilized to collect relevant data needed for
the study.
The limitations of this study are the Grade 12 Senior High students in any
existing strand at Lingunan National High School. This study was conducted at the
same school mentioned. This study was completed during the 1st semester of the school
year 2022-2023. Any grade level in the campus is not within the scope of the study. The
data gathering of the study is conducted through interviews using survey
questionnaires. In addition, this study did not cover any issues other than the impact of
academic stress to students’ social skills.

Review of Related Literature (RRL)
Local Literature
According to (Aguirre, 2008), stress is difficult to describe since it might be subjective.
It is determined by how individuals assess or interpret environmental occurrences. In
terms of proportion. (Masters, 2015) define stress as the sensation - people experience
extended, unexpressed emotions that cause various particular changes in the body, such
as elevated heart rate, sweaty hands, and hormone release (Lyness, 2007). As a result, it

is exerted on the body as a demand placed on an organism to adapt, cope, and adjust
(Rathus, 2012).
Foreign Literature
Stress is a wide range of occurrences that make life difficult (Feist 2010) and surpasses
an individual's ability to manage, posing significant obstacles to health and happiness
(Lahey.2009). Most people experience stress, which causes rapid bodily changes such
as emotional feelings, which can be influenced by an individual's ability to deal with it
effectively (Bulo, 2014). However, stress can manifest itself in a variety of ways,
including situations that necessitate behavioral changes (Ciccarelli 2009) and responses
elicited when it overwhelms a person's perceived ability to meet the demands of a
situation (Feist 2012).
Local Studies
Normally, stress appears in all organizations and affects all of its members (Alontaga,
2013). According to one study (Calaguas, 2012), everyone is bombarded with everyday
stresses and it affects every aspect of life because of the pressures associated with it,
especially adolescents who frequently see themselves as being evaluated in their
academic performance. Furthermore, (Salvacion, 2012) demonstrates that the majority
of students show significant stress vulnerability and that coming to school is
compromised, therefore it is acceptable to assume that pupils are also affected
(Calaguas, 2012). As a result, (Mazo,2015) confirmed that physical stresses such as
sickness and loudness, as well as specific life situations such as the death of a loved
one, are among the significant stressors of a person.
Foreign Studies
Britz discovered that stress affects people all throughout the world and permeates
practically every element of civilization. This is a result of the emotional pressure that

manifests in various daily scenarios. Stress affects people of all ages, including those
who are young children, students, and adults (Loginova, 2015).
Every day, a senior high school students faces a variety of difficulties that add to their
stress levels and, if left unattended, will only worsen and affect their academic
performance. social and emotional health. These stressors include the need to flourish
and achieve in the environment, overcoming financial struggles, worry about the future,
societal issues and opportunities, and the fact that students have limited time but must
complete a large number of courses. They discovered a negative correlation between
students' academic achievement and their levels of stress, anxiety, and despair. (Khan
2013) found that the ability to manage stress was equally important.
Stress can be categorized into two categories: mental stress and physical stress. In this
study, stress exclusively refers to mental stress. Stress is a cognitive and behavioral
experience process made up of both mental stress sources and mental stress reactions,
according to psychology. The terms "stress sources" and "stress triggers" are
interchangeable. in addition to social and environmental stressors, biological and
spiritual stressors are all included. (Zhang I., 2011). Research on Senior High School
Students' Coping Techniques.
Synthesis of the Study
The evaluated literature and studies supplied the necessary information for a better
comprehension of this study on the effects of stress on students, where the general
definition of stress was included in both international and local literature, depending on
how the authors describe it. In accordance with this, other relevant research on student
stress was also included. This study can give the required data for a better explanation
of the local impact, which cannot be quickly understood using a foreign base.
In summarizing the evaluations, the researchers determined that some stresses are quick
and severe, while others are persistent and significant, and some can improve their
performance while others result in another stressor. The stress response might manifest
as tenseness, anxiety, or other bodily symptoms. Stress is defined psychologically as a
physical and mental response to a certain scenario. Others viewed stress to be healthy

and good in keeping a person attentive and active, but most findings show that students,
particularly college students, face higher stress, as evidenced by the connected studies
above. Students face a variety of hurdles, including schoolwork, academic duties that
must be completed on time, and even college recognition. Raised stress levels among
individuals may result in worse academic achievement, which can have an impact on
both physical and mental health. As a result, students engage in various coping
mechanisms, such as spending as much time as possible with family and friends.
