Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Parental involvement means the participation of parents in regular, two-way,
meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school
activities including and ensuring — parents play an integral role in assisting their
child’s learning, to be actively involved in their child’s education at school, a full
partner in their child’s education especially decision making and on advisory
committees to assist in the education of their child. When children are given the chance
to learn from their two main contexts of development, namely the home and school,
they perform better in class (Gestwicki 1987). Events at home, in school, and the
continuity between the home and school environments all have an impact on a child’s
learning. Parents, educators, and administrators could assist a good relationship
between them, and children learn more efficiently (Salandanan 2007).
By being involved at home and school, parents can now be held accountable
for contributing to their children’s education. Parental involvement is an essential
factor in children’s academic performance. According to Harris and Goodall (2007),
parental involvement describes the different parental behaviors, parental aspirations
for their child’s academic achievement, communication about the school, participation
in activities, communications with teachers, and the parental rules at home which are
education related.
Parental involvement is related to student outcomes, particularly in lower
dropout and truancy rates. There’s a wide range of parental involvement. It can affect
in; activities, homework, attending workshops or attending school plays and sporting
events of a student. As stated Wendy S. Grolnick et. Al (1994 and 1997)

conceptualized three dimensions of parental involvement based on how parent-child
interactions affect students’ schooling and motivation. Behavioral involvement refers
to parents’ public actions representing their interest in their child’s education, such as
attending an open house or volunteering at the school. Personal involvement includes
parent-child interactions that communicate positive attitudes about school and the
importance of education to the child. Cognitive/Intellectual involvement refers to
behaviors that promote children’s skill development and knowledge, such as reading
books and going to museums. Parental involvement, according to this theory, affects
student achievement because these interactions affect students’ motivation, their sense
of competence, and the belief that they have control over their success in school.
Background of the Study
Parents and teachers are the student's primary educators in life. Up until the
child starts elementary school, parents are the child's primary educators. Even while
parents continue to have a significant impact on their children's learning throughout
the school years and beyond, the school still plays a significant role in the education
of the kids. Both the home and the school play important roles in students' education.
Parental involvement is an essential factor in the development of the
foundation of children’s education. Despite this, many parents do not appear to be
getting involved in their student’s education. This lack of involvement may harm
students' achievement in and out of the classroom and ultimately affect their
continuing educational development and success (Wanke, 2008).
Lareau as cited by Shearer (2006) stated some of the barriers to parents
becoming fully involved in their student’s learning include the following:(1) lack of
child care, (2) inflexible work schedules, (3) lack of income and transportation to

participate in school programs and events, (4) lack of confidence to interact in a culture
and/or language different from their own, (5) parental shame of their educational
failure, (6) lack of written literacy skills, (7) insufficient information on home-school
collaboration, (8) different expectations of the school role, (9) discomfort in higher-
class settings, and (10) fear that they are not educated enough to be of help in the
classroom or to their children. These barriers might affect the parents differently by
the parents’ personal and cultural backgrounds and characteristics.
In that event, the researchers aim to analyze if parental involvement has an
impact on the student's academic achievements and the roles of parents in their child's
educational growth.
Significance of the Study
This research is made to provide crucial information and knowledge regarding
the chosen topic from the respondents, recent studies or theses, and related sites needed
for the expected importance to the individuals as follows:
The results of this study can help students to have healthy relationships with
their parents. Additionally, improve their academic achievement and performance.
This study is beneficial to parents for this will give them an awareness of how
their involvement affects their child's learning journey and a guide for them on what
they should do to improve their relationship with their child and for their help to
progress in studies.
This study may enable the teachers to know and understand the factors that
may be related to the parent's involvement. It may also help the teacher redesign
school, classroom, and homework activities to increase parent involvement.

School Administrators may be benefitted from the result of this study by providing
them with data relevant to improving and reconstructing school activities.
This study will provide insights to future researchers into how parental
involvement is directly related to students’ academic achievement and performance.
Definition of Terms
To better aid readers in understanding this study, the following words that are
often used throughout it are conceptualized and operationalized.
Parental Involvement refers to the amount of participation a parent has when
it comes to the schooling of his/her children.
Academic Achievement means the level of schooling they have completed and
the ability to attain success in their studies.
Academic Performance is the result of the efforts exerted by the students. It
represents outcomes that indicate the extent to which a person has accomplished
specific goals.
Students are individuals registered and recognized as learners in educational
institutions like colleges and universities to acquire knowledge and skills that could
enhance personal development to prepare them for the world of work.
Parents refer to the father or mother, somebody’s mother, father, or legal
guardian (Ermituno, 2009). In this study, the parent refers to the father, mother, or
legal guardian of Grade 12 students at Lingunan Senior High School during the school
year 2014-2015, who are responsible for their care and upbringing.
Relationship refers to how two or more concepts, objects, or people are
connected, or the state of being connected.

Education is a purposeful activity directed at achieving certain aims, such as
transmitting knowledge or fostering skills and character traits. These aims may include
the development of understanding, rationality, kindness, and honesty of Senior High
students.
School refers to an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces
and learning environments for the teaching of students under the direction of teachers.
Learning is a process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of
experience and increases the potential for improved performance and future learning
(Ambrose et al, 2010, p. 3).
