The Main Task Introduction
What are the course
requirements?
 The main course requirements is to create a four-
page magazine, consisting of a cover page, a
contents page and a double spread feature page. The
magazine topic must be based on a music genre of
my choice, and include a variety of different
conventions used in professionally published
magazines. I am required to use my own photos,
taken myself that relate to my chosen genre, in which
I will edit and put together in Photoshop. At the end of
production of the magazine I must include a creative
evaluation, demonstrating my presentation skills.
What genre have you chosen and
who is your target audience?
 The genre I have chosen is RAP as I am knowledgeable of the
genre and therefore this will help in my understanding of what to
include when producing the magazine for my target audience.
The target audience will be males aged 17-25, as this is the
majority age group that listen to RAP music. Being a part of my
target audience myself, means that I am capable of producing an
ideal magazine, with all of the necessary conventions required,
as well as using my knowledge to create headlines and articles
that will entice my target audience. However I considered
choosing a POP genre, although I decided not to use this genre
as I did not associate myself enough with POP, meaning I would
not be able to make use of my available knowledge on other
music genre.
How will you engage your target
audience?
 In order to engage with my target audience I will have
to include minimal amounts of text when necessary,
particularly on the front cover, as the target audience
age group I have chosen typically losses focus easily.
The language I will use in my magazine will be
informal in most cases in order for the target audience
to be able to relate to the magazine and feel that it is
aimed at and produced for them. I will also include
several advertisements of exclusive items and free
giveaways in order to entice the target audience, as
this catches my age groups attention in modern day
society.
What research and analysis will you
need to carry out?
 In order to make my magazine successful I will need to carry out
different research and analysis on my chosen music genre (Rap)
and the production and distribution of magazines. I will analyse a
number of different cover pages, contents pages and feature
pages from professionally published magazines. This will help
me understand the necessary conventions and style my
magazine must possess. I will also create a mood board in order
to take inspiration for my colour scheme and genre and
understand how to incorporate connotations into my magazine,
as well as a questionnaire that will allow me to gather data that
will aid me in producing a magazine that I know people want.
Flatplans will also be made, which will enable me to understand
what I want the layout of my magazine to look like. Finally I will
complete a case study on professional rap magazines to better
my understanding of distribution and production of magazines.
