I. DEFINITION
Homonymy happens in situations where a
word is written and/or pronounced the same
way as another, but has a different meaning.
Example:
address(v) vs address (n)
pear (n) vs pair (n)
bank (n) vs bank (n)

ABSOLUTE HOMONYMS
- Unrelated in meaning
- Identical in pronunciation and spelling
- Grammatical equivalent.
Example:
mail1 [meIl] (n): posted letters and parcels
mail2 [meIl] (n): armor made of rings or chains

Example:
bass /beɪs/ (n): the lowest tone or part in music, for instruments or voices
bass /bæs/ (n): a sea fish that used for food
9. Date1 /deɪt/ (n): a particular day or year when a particular event
happened or will happen.
Date 2 /deɪt/ (n): a sweet sticky brown fruit that grows on a tree
called a date palm, common in North Africa and West Asia.
=>Absolute homonyms
On a shopping list, next to the fruits and
vegetables, I wrote: "Check dates1." My
husband comes home with a beautiful box of
Moroccan dates2.

avoid being hit orseen
Duck2 /dʌk/(n): a common bird that lives on or near water
and has short legs

expressions that show that you are
surprised, upset, annoyed or worried
