MOBILE
TECHNOLOGIES
Presented by : Tsiamo Mokgopa
: University of Johannesburg
1. PRESENTATION OVERVIEW
• This presentation will cover the following aspects :
• Brief explanation of what Mobile Technologies are.
• What is considered as Mobile Technologies.
• The benefits of Mobile Technologies.
• Factors to consider when using Mobile Technologies especially for access to Library materials.
• Instances of how Mobile Technologies can be utilized in an environment of School Libraries and
Information Centre.
2. INTRODUCTION- MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES
• These are technological interventions that are used for cellular communication. However, in
addition to the used for communication, these devices are also used to interact with Global
Positioning System, receive and share information and also access the internet.
• These technologies are referred to as mobile because they are not permanently set in one location
and can be moved whenever and wherever the user desires.
• The use and swift functionality of Mobile Technologies is also determined by the model of the
device and what it can offer to the user.
• Communications Technologies are what enable the Mobile Technologies to function more
effectively and serve their intent more promptly.
3. WHAT IS CONSIDERED AS MOBILE
TECHNOLOGIES
• Cell phones/ Smartphones.
• Tablet devices.
• Laptops.
• Netbook computers.
• Global Positioning System devices (GPS).
4. THE BENEFITS
OF MOBILE
TECHNOLOGIES
They provide ubiquitous access to
the desired information.
Increase productivity.
Provide easy communication tools
and models.
They provide the user with unlimited
access to library materials.
They are portable.
5. IMAGE OF
DIFFERENT
MOBILE
TECHNOLOGIES
• Depicted Mobile Technologies :
• Smartphones.
• Tablet device.
• Laptop device.
6. FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING MOBILE
TECHNOLOGIES ESPECIALLY FOR ACCESS TO LIBRARY
MATERIALS
• Access to the materials may require Internet connection.
• Some Library materials may not be available virtually.
• Storage capacity of the Mobile Technology used.
7. INSTANCES OF HOW MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES
CAN BE UTILIZED IN THE SLIC ENVIRONMENT
• The adoption of Library or Web 3.0 is essential in allowing for Mobile Technologies to be utilized
in a SLIC environment.
• Mobile Technologies can enable the users to have access to the virtual library collection without
being limited to the physical structure of the library to access those materials.
• These technological devices can allow multiple accesses to the library collection.
• They can be used to search for specific materials of the library, hence providing and approach that
is structured and specific.
8. CONCLUSION
• Mobile Technologies play an essential role in the access of information at a faster pace.
• Using Mobile Technologies, information can be accessed anywhere and at any given time.
• Gone are those days of having to be in the same physical space in order to connect and
communicate with someone else. Mobile devices provide various technological interventions
which enable us to connect (Phone calls, SMS utilization, video calls and etc).
• It is through Mobile Technologies that the educational processes are continuing even though we
are faced with a worldwide pandemic.
• The future is heavily influenced by technological interventions, which include Mobile
Technologies- Smart Technologies.
THANK YOU!!!
