Traces the history since Steve Smale's 1959 proof up to the latest eversion due to Arnaud Chéritat in 2014, and reanalyzes the eversion presented in my 1966 Scietific American article,
15. Arnold Shapiro - 1960
Shapiro’s eversion was only generally known much later. He
died in 1962, but had told his construction to Bernard Morin.
Morin published it with George Francis in 1980.

One of the clay models Morin used to communicate his mental pictures.

These pictures were published much later (1979) by Morin and Jean-Pierre Petit.
26. George Francis:
A Topological Picturebook - 1987
Francis observed that Morin’s
eversion is one of a family of
“tobacco pouch” eversions.
The central stage can have
2, 3, 4, 5, …-fold symmetry.

Editor's Notes
Slide the saddles apart
0 Going to rotate green saddle 180 degrees. Move strips out of the way.

4 135 degrees
y-eversion-5.fla (end of saddle rotations) Now slide strips to a more symmetric configuration.

11 Everywhere there are two yellow sides facing each other. This is a double covering of the central part
of Kuiper’s immersion of the projective plane.
12 This is the only place where there’s any change in the z-direction.
