New Market Films would be a good choice to distribute the psychological thriller film because they have successfully distributed similar low-budget films in the past, such as Memento which had a $9 million budget and grossed $25 million. New Market Films aims to distribute diverse films from new directors and lesser known actors, fitting the described film. The film would stand out from psychological thrillers set in cities or prisons by being set in a house and town, with added elements of action.
1. QUESTION 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product
and why?
2. I would expect a distribution company such as New Line Cinema or New Market Films to
distribute my film because of the films that they have taken a part in distributing in the past,
New Line Cinema helped distribute ‘Se7en’ and New Market Films distributed Memento which
are films from the same genre as mine – psychological thriller. I have chosen New Market Films
as one option because a lot of the films that they’ve distributed have had a lot of success
distributing psychological thrillers in the past, ‘Se7en’ being an example of this. However, I feel
that New Market Films would be a more likely suitor for the distribution of my film because a
lot of the films they have distributed in the past have had quite low budgets (under $10,000,000)
and have had a lot of success which would be a good reason to pick them, an example being the
psychological thriller ‘Memento’ which had a budget of $9,000,000 and got a total gross profit
of $25,000,000.

PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLERS

4. New Market Films is a subsidiary of the parent company Exclusive Media Group. New
Market is aiming to ‘acquire, produce and distribute diverse films’ which would suit mine
because mine is diverse and they will be used to distributing films from new directors with
lesser known actors in it. Mine is diverse for it’s genre because of the chosen setting, at
the house instead of some of the bigger psychological thrillers which choose asylums and
prisons as their settings such as ‘The Lazarus Project’ and ‘Shutter Island’ and in cities
such as in ‘The Sixth Sense’. I also feel the story line of the job gone wrong will be
intriguing to those regular psychological thriller watchers as I feel the added element of
action will entice them into watching the film as it will maybe have a faster pace to the
psychological thrillers they are used to watching.
5. THE HOUSE/TOWN SETTING
AGAINST CITIES AND ASYLUMS
This is the city landscape from The Sixth
Sense which is a lot busier than the setting
my characters are going to be in and I feel
that the increased action will need to have
a slower environment to compensate
keeping it more conventional to a
psychological thriller.
This is the asylum from Shutter Island and
although it does fit the peaceful aspect of what I
was aiming for with the town, I feel would be to
relaxed and it’s not the place people who had just
attempted a heist would choose to rendezvous
afterwards and wouldn’t fit the storyline.
